Over the past two terms we have had a range of exciting events happening in our Primary School. This caters for the wide range of interests of our students across a range of year levels.
Year 5/6 Debating
Over the past few years due to COVID restrictions, we have held intra-school debating for our Year 5 and Year 6 students instead of the local inter-school competition. We are looking to start the local competition again in 2023. The intra-school debates are held in Terms 3 and 4. This year we had 8 teams from our Year 5 and 6 cohorts. So far we have completed two debates with one more to go. Our first two topics required strong arguments and thoughtful rebuttals.
We were fortunate to have experienced adjudicators Hugo (Year 11 debater) and Madam Morgan ( Secondary Debating Leader) to adjudicate the three debates. The feedback they provide is so valuable for the students continued improvement. Madam Morgan is very excited about our Primary students moving into Secondary debating with the skills already shown at this Primary level.
A huge thank you to our debating coaches – Mrs Stolz, Ms Peterson, Miss Levitt, Mrs Hofstee, Mrs Whytcross, Mrs West-McInnes and Mr Knight for the time they have given to coach and mentor their team.
Primary Has Talent
One of our requests from Student Council was to have a Primary Has Talent event to follow on from the Secondary one. Each year this has been a popular event with students showing their talents in the areas of singing, instrumental, dance, speech, drama, and magic.
We are close to the end of our auditions with the finals to be in Week 7. A big thank you to Mr Knight, guest judges and our Year 6 leaders for their commitment to viewing the auditions across many lunch breaks.
Stay tuned!
Premiers Reading Challenge
Each year from May to August our Primary Students take part in the Premiers Reading Challenge which aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. We also use this reading activity as a House Challenge.
Our Premier congratulated the 167,000 participants from more than 940 schools and 340 centres who read a total of 2.39 million books in a recent update.
We announced our winners at Lower and Upper Primary Assemblies over the past two weeks.
Lower Primary – Eva P, Aaroosha J , Quinn T
Upper Primary – Danica M, Taj M, Sarayu K, Eeshani C, Arukshan S, Sahrish K
The winner of the House challenge was Mitchell house with 3073 books. Cunningham and Leichhardt read 1612 and 1487 respectively.
P&F Disco
Our Concourse was a hive of activity on Friday afternoon as the Primary students moved and grooved to the DJ music with their glow in the dark wristbands. Our P&F organised three discos for our students – Prep, Year 1-3 and Year 4-6. The Concourse has proved popular for these events with our early years students being able to see their parents, provides a cooler extended space and facilities close by.
A highlight is the ice block each student receives as the disco finishes.
A big thank you to our P&F helpers – Hansi, Lee, Pastor Matt as well as our staff members who helped supervise students over the night.
We are thankful for these extra events that provides opportunities for our students to enjoy a different part of school life.

It's A Gift
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8
We installed Student Leaders this week. Students applied for leadership responsibilities and were chosen by peers and staff alike. It’s a curious task for students to undertake. Leadership is not something everyone does naturally. Not even being accomplished in a particular field will necessarily make a person an effective leader. We can learn and develop leadership skills if we try.
At school I remember studying Maths, English, History, some other subjects, but not Leadership. We learned about leadership by experience, mainly through sport. Some students learned to lead through Scouts, Cadets and Youth Groups, but usually the most well-regarded students were made Captains.
Leadership is still not part of the curriculum. While Harvard Business School may be well into the future for our students who wish to pursue leadership development, we need to start developing leaders from the outset. For any group or community to flourish it will need leaders to guide it. Thus, leadership is encouraged and supported throughout the St Peters journey.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome in the 1st Century AD, identifying gifts present in their community. These gifts helped build up their community. Rome was a place that didn’t welcome or react kindly to Christians. Quite the opposite, there were times of periodic persecution of Christians there. For the wellbeing of the community, they needed all their gifts to be activated, including the gift of leadership.
Paul mentions prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership and showing mercy. In other letters he mentions other gifts. Leadership is one of these gifts. Those who have this gift of leadership should lead and lead diligently.
Our Student Leaders have been identified as having gifts of leadership in various ways. Each Student Leader is different and will bring their own approach and emphasis to their role. As a community we celebrate their willingness to lead and commit to supporting them in their leading.
We thank God for our student leaders and pray God blesses them for their work in the coming year.

Arise Christian Community Church
Arise is a Lutheran community that meets at St Peters, Springfield. It’s a place where you can come to know God’s love through Jesus, and find light and hope for your life, and connect with other families from St Peters and the wider community.
In our service you will hear God’s word, sing, pray and share in Holy Communion if you want to. There’s a message for the kids too.
Just a quick reminder that we have Ben Pettingill coming out tomorrow (Wednesday) for a Keynote with our Secondary Students.
This will be followed by three sessions across Year 7, 8 and 9. These workshops will hone in on the resilience message and we are all very excited about this opportunity.
Next week on Wednesday – the 26th of October – will be a live online event with Ben, so parents can tune in with their students from home.
We thank the P and F for their support for our school’s wellbeing program and hope that the students all learn some important resilience messages tomorrow.

Class of 2012 – The First St Peters Springfield Reunion
Springfield's First 10 Year Reunion
Our very first 10 Year Reunion for St Peters Springfield for the Class of 2012 occurred over the past weekend! These Old Scholars are our very first Old Scholars. They are the first Year 8 class of St Peters Springfield from our College’s Founding year, 2008, and were the Seniors for 5 years straight! Our Old Scholars have taken some amazing pathways in life and still their hearts have remained as beautiful as they were in their St Peters days.
It was wonderful to show our Old Scholars around the St Peters Springfield campus. Past and current St Peters Springfield staff enjoyed mingling and reminiscing with these past students. It was also a privilege to have the new Patron of SPOSA, Margaret Curnow, attend. St Peters Springfield is very honoured to have taught these fine young people!
Primary Years
Year 1’s step into the past
Our Year 1 students went back into the past to learn about what life was like in their grandparents’ time, and the generations of the past. They listened to a presenter talk about the difference in toys, reading, games, technology, and even how students were disciplined in school!
This links to the Year 1 inquiry unit 'What are the connections between our childhood and those of our elders'. Our students had lots of questions and wonderings about the changes. Mrs West-McInnes was excited to see some items from her childhood!
The students enjoyed playing with the old toys and games, like a Jack in the box and the elastics jumping game. Some were surprised how fun old games could be and many of them begged to play them all again. Students also loved typing their names on the typewriter and hearing the clickity-clack of the keys. This experience has definitely provided the Year 1 students with a special look into the past!

Year 5 Unit of Inquiry – Six Thinking Hats Strategy
Last Friday, 5T welcomed Mrs West-Mcinnes and Mrs Hofstee into our classroom for a role-playing activity about the Eureka Stockade. This term, Year 5 have been learning in our Inquiry unit, ‘How does exploration and discovery change our future’. As part of this unit, students learnt about the Eureka Stockade during the week. One of the strategies used was Edward de Bono’s 6 Thinking Hats. Students learnt how to look at a topic from different perspectives.
White Hat – Looking at the facts
Red Hat – Looking at the emotions and feelings about the topic
Black Hat – Being a critic and looking at the negative aspects
Yellow Hat – Being an optimist and looking at the positive aspects
Green Hat – Being creative and looking at new ideas and possibilities
Blue Hat – Organising the ideas and providing productive decision-making
Students in groups researched information about the Eureka Stockade from one of these perspectives. They created a slideshow and presented this to Mrs West-Mcinnes and Mrs Hofstee. They set up the classroom as a hat shop and had to sell their idea using one of the 6 thinking hats. It was wonderful to have Mrs West-Mcinnes and Mrs Hofstee part of the lesson as a fun way to engage the students in the topic. The students tried hard to sell their hat to them! They did such an amazing job that both Mrs West-Mcinnes and Mrs Hofstee bought all the hats from the shop!

We are pleased to announce the 2023 College Captains – Zoe Clift and Adam Varghese.
I know that both Zoe and Adam are excited to begin their journey as College Captains leading the newly created Portfolio Leadership Teams and build upon the work of previous College Captains before them.
Every Monday this term a group of diligent Duke of Edinburgh participants have been and will be giving up their time to assist in a range of activities to help staff and the College community by completing a range of chores. These tasks have included tidying up classrooms, putting posters up, rearranging furniture, pumping up balls for the HPE department, watering gardens and picking up rubbish.
Many thanks to the following Year 10 participants for their assistance so far: Cameron B, Nithesh F, Ethan Y and Ella M.
There are four parts to achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award (which is the award these participants are pursuing). These include completing a physical activity, a skill and volunteering over a period of 13 to 26 weeks (depending on whether the section is elected as their ‘major’ or not). The other component entails the completion of an adventurous journey.
If you are interested in learning more about the Duke of Edinburgh Award here at SPLC Springfield, please talk to Mme Rae Morgan, Ms Claire Santangelo or Ms Claire Ellacott.

On Friday, 14th October 2022, our Year 6 and Junior High Dance students participated in dance workshops facilitated by Martha from the Queensland Ballet, as a part of the Springfield Arts Magic event.
Junior Dance Troupe members participated in a workshop titled “Ballet History & Technique”. The history and evolution of ballet will be incorporated into the teaching of this ballet technique workshop, adapted for various age level or dance experience. Students built on their technique and ballet vocabulary throughout the class while also learning adapted repertoire from different eras.
As a part of the Year 6 Dance Unit this semester, students participated in a workshop is titled ‘Nutcracker Repertoire’. During this workshop students focussed on how space (dimension, level, size and floor pathways), time (tempo), dynamics (movement qualities) and choreographic devices (repetition and motif) reflect the cultural influences of adapted repertoire from The Nutcracker.
Thank you to the Springfield Learning Coalition and Queensland Ballet for making this wonderful afternoon a possibility.

TERM 4 SPORTS
If the girls choose more than one sport, communication is the key, please advise the respective sport coordinator at the start of the season.
Congratulations to the girls from Years 7 - 9 who competed in the QGSSSA Junior Badminton competition last Saturday, it was a great day across all four venues. Thanks to our Badminton Coordinator Laura Buckby and our team of coaches for all their work in preparing the girls.
Last Saturday was Week 2 of the mini grading games, with that done and dusted, we are now eagerly awaiting the 2022/2023 Round 1 draw. The grading games have been a great way for our new players to start to learn the game and for our teams to bond together. It has been pleasing to see the improvement in our teams.
Our U13 Div 3 team with no subs and a number of the girls backing up from the U12 Div 2 game showed huge improvement, they were tired but really showed some great teamwork.
U18 Div 3 won 4-1 against AHS then again 6-0 to St Margaret’s. They are a lovely and positive bunch of girls with so much potential and just pure kindness. I was blown away by their attitude towards the game and the in depth debrief they had after the games to talk about their own strengths and what they want to work on as a team.
Our Open team came away with two close wins. It is such a pleasure to watch Coach Nacole and the girls interact during the matches.
A huge shout out to Mrs Champion and Mr Kotzur for coming into training late and giving our Open team a pump-up speech prior to this week’s Round 1 fixture.
Congratulations to our U15 Div 2 coach, Tenealle Fasala, who has been selected to represent Australia in a 15 strong team for the FINA World League Super Finals in Spain from 2-6 November 2022. We would like to wish Tenealle all the best of luck and I will try to keep you updated on results whilst she is away.
