We are excited to share an update on our journey toward becoming an authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) school. This year marked a pivotal step as we hosted our IB Consultation Visit, a significant milestone in our candidacy phase that brings us closer to full authorisation.

The Consultation Visit was an invaluable opportunity for us to receive feedback and guidance from the IB’s experienced educator. Mrs Carolyn Withers is our IB Consultant and works alongside Ms Susan Allenspach. During the visit Carolyn worked closely with our leadership, Primary Years Staff, and College community to assess our progress, offering insights and recommendations that will strengthen our PYP implementation. The visit affirmed our commitment to inquiry-based learning, international-mindedness, and the values that the IB framework champions.

During the visit, our consultant explored various aspects of our Programme, from curriculum planning and assessment practices to teacher collaboration and community involvement. Our consultant was impressed by our strides in integrating the IB philosophy into our daily practices and expressed enthusiasm for the strong foundation we have built. Our Primary Years’ dedication to professional growth and willingness to embrace the principles of the IB framework were highlighted.

One of the most powerful outcomes of this visit has been the collective commitment from our community to foster a learning environment where students are encouraged to think critically, communicate effectively, and grow as empathetic global citizens. The IB PYP’s focus on developing the whole child aligns beautifully with our College’s vision of nurturing lifelong learners who are ready to contribute thoughtfully to the world.

The feedback we received has provided us with a clear roadmap for the next steps. Our focus will be on continuing to enhance our practices, deepening our understanding of inquiry-based learning, and strengthening our resources to ensure a sustainable and impactful PYP for our students.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our students, teachers, families, and the wider College community for their support and enthusiasm throughout this journey. Your commitment to the values of the IB PYP strengthens our resolve to create a nurturing, globally-minded learning environment. We are excited for our students to come together for our Entrepreneurship Market Day on Tuesday 19 November. Students from Years 5–12 will be showcasing their creativity and Business skills with a fantastic range of handmade foods and crafts for sale.

This is a great opportunity for students from across the College to support our young entrepreneurs and pick up some unique, one-of-a-kind items.

On the day, students can purchase from a variety of stalls offering delicious treats and unique items, including loaded nachos, brownies, burgers, cookies, iced tea, waffles, baked goods, slime, cupcakes, cinnamon scrolls, samosas, chutney, frozen yoghurt and much more.

I met Jesus online earlier this year. Not the real Jesus, but an Artificial Intelligence version of Jesus called 'Ask Jesus'. This AI Jesus answers questions about anything. He pauses, states the question, then proposes an answer. “Jesus, can you help me pass my exam?” “Thank you for your question, Squirrelbabe91. I give you my peace to be with you. Study well before the exam and you will likely perform well.”

Sometimes AI Jesus’ answers sound reasonable. Sometimes he sounds non-committal. AI Jesus does quote from the bible, but he does seem to fall back on favourite texts to make general points about respecting others rather than giving answers that are too directive.

I have two issues with AI Jesus. One is about the quality of his advice—I think he could do better. The other issue is why anyone would take advice from a bot.

The problem with all AI is that it is a compilation of what’s on the internet. The quality of this is variable at best. What is on the internet is what we put there. So, AI is a reflection of us. We need an excellent application of the Scriptures, in this case, for AI Jesus to be of any help. Generally, we need excellent results from our AI investigations, which in many fields will be difficult or near impossible to achieve. And we simply won’t follow a machine for matters of faith, discernment, morality and ethical standards.

The St Peters mission is 'Excellence in Christian Co-education'. This week we gathered to acknowledge the achievements of our students at our Secondary Awards Ceremony. We celebrate excellence. The world needs excellence in every field of endeavour. The Apostle Paul describes what excellence looks like: true excellence is love, and the most excellent way is the way of love.

Then Paul says, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” And he goes on to talk of the futility of a life without love. We can have extraordinary abilities, but these are of no worth if we do not have love. As we celebrate excellence, we see the most excellent way is the way of love.

I learned something recently about the word 'excellent'. The word 'excellent' appears in print in English for the first time in John Wycliffe’s translation of the Bible in 1384.

1 Corinthians 12:31 says, "But sue ye the betere goostli yiftis. And yit Y schewe to you a more exellent weye."

The New International Version renders this as, “Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.”

The foremost use of the term 'excellent' actually speaks about love. Love will transform our world. Imagine if AI learned from this kind of excellence!

As we celebrate excellence this week, we remember we can all be excellent to each other as we love one another, as our Lord Jesus has loved us.

Wellbeing this week is an article from School TV. It also comes as a timely reminder that as we prepare for our graduation and our awards night this week that achievement is only one part of being a successful human.

We seek reassurance from our REVAMP positive psychology, where the A represents achievement – or accomplishment.

Acknowledging achievement is important—it is vital to our whole person development to set goals and aim for greatness. It is also a core value of St Peters Lutheran College to achieve 'Plus Ultra' — ever higher in all we do.

But too much of any one element of success is unhelpful. When we focus on achievement for the sake of achievement, we miss the mark. Achievement should be celebrated, it is why there are awards nights, recognition of hard work is important. But looking after yourself is the most important—so accomplishment should never come at the sake of your wellbeing or your relationships with others.

We are proud of you – all – regardless of your achievements and remain cognisant of your work as growing into good humans first and foremost.

External Exam Recognition

As the results are received over the coming weeks, students who have sat external AMEB, ACM and ASCA practical exams from Grade 1 to Grade 8 will be acknowledged at the relevant final Assemblies. Congratulations to all students who have devoted time, energy and talent to the pursuit of excellence in the external governing bodies syllabi. Thanks to all the Private Tuition Tutors for guiding the students to achieve the best results.

Secondary Years Presentation Evening

Cantabile Strings and Con Brio (including current Year 6 students) performed at the Secondary Presentation Evening held at The Dron Auditorium at the Indooroopilly Campus last Wednesday night. Thanks to Ms Crellin, Ms Emma Anstey-Codd, Mrs Pomerenke and Mrs Campbell for their work with the Ensembles.

Vocal Recital

Ms Emma Anstey-Codd’s vocal studio recital will be held next Monday 18 November in the Learning Commons from 3:00pm – 4:00pm. Students are reminded to wear their formal uniform, not their sport uniform.

Cocurricular Final Rehearsals for Term 4

Ceasing Private Tuition Lessons

Private Tuition 2025

Students planning to continue Private Tuition lessons in 2025 are not required to complete a new enrolment form. Can parents please ensure Private Tuition Tutors are aware that your child will be continuing so they can factor this into their planning for 2025. Please note that 30-minute private tuition fees will increase to $42.50 in 2025.

SHEP

Six Primary Years students will be involved in the State Honours Ensemble Program offered at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University over the 23 and 24 November. The student will participate in either a Magenta Vocal Ensemble directed by leading Brisbane vocal conductor Jenny Moon or Pearl String Orchestra conducted by Brisbane violinist, teacher and conductor Mark Sullivan. We wish the students as they will be joined by over 100 students from across the state in the intensive workshops and final concert.

GBC Mixed Touch Football Gala Day

On Saturday, 9 November, St Peters Springfield had three teams compete at the GBC Mixed Touch Football Gala Day. This day was a little taster of what the GBC affiliation might be like for St Peters Springfield. St Peters Springfield entered Year 6/7, Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 teams with over 30 students involved. Students and staff had a great day in fellowship with one another. This was the first time in St Peters Springfield’s history that Secondary students had the opportunity to compete in teams solely comprised of St Peters Springfield students. Many of the students who participated had never played competitive Touch Football before, but nonetheless, this did not stop them from having a Plus Ultra mindset. A very big thank you to Ms Chettle and Mr Brown who took on coaching responsibilities.

Last Saturday marked an outstanding end to the season for the Year 8A team, who finished the season undefeated with a win against St Margaret’s to win the 2024 QGSSSA Pennant. Congratulations to the team and their dedicated coach, Dean, on this incredible achievement.

It was equally rewarding to see the Year 7A team finish their season on a high note with a well-deserved win. As Mr Kotzur shared with the team on Saturday, their significant improvement throughout the season has been impressive. A big thank you to their coach, Mr Cant, for his guidance and support.

A reminder that all Year 7A and 8A guernseys should now be returned. For those still playing this Saturday, guernseys must be returned after the final game. Please remember to bring a spare top to change into.

Well done to all players and coaches on a fantastic season!

WATER POLO - BRISBANE METROPOLITAN JUNIOR COMPETITION

We sincerely thank the P&F community for this grant which enabled us to purchase 90 custom St Peters branded Water Polo balls. The girls were absolutely thrilled and filled with excitement to be able to train and play with brand-new, high-quality balls from KAP7. This grant has made a significant impact, boosting team morale and providing the players with the best equipment for their development and enjoyment of the sport. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and for making this possible.

It’s been fantastic watching the girls improve week after week! With only three games left in the 2024 season, we're looking forward to finishing strong. The captains' Water Polo Weekly newsletter has been a hit with both students and parents and the captains, along with the rest of the Opens Team, have done an incredible job creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere with the Water Polo community.

Term 4 Preseason Training

QGSSSA Senior AFL: Training will occur on Mondays and Tuesdays in Weeks 8 and 9. Monday sessions are 3:30pm – 5:00pm, and Tuesday sessions are 6:15am – 7:30am at Mayer Oval.

Swimming:​ Sessions have commenced on Wednesday afternoons (3:20pm – 4:00pm) at the 50m pool for any girls playing Water Polo or wishing to do preseason QGSSSA swim training.

Walking around and visiting our sporting venues over the past week, it’s been fantastic to witness and see the enthusiasm and energy of the St Peters boys participating in pre-season training and games. Preparations are taking place in readiness for the 2025 St Peters sporting year with boys engaging in Cricket, Volleyball, Australian Rules, Swimming, Rugby development, Football development and various Athletic Development programs with the College gym.

All of this could not occur without the hard work of our coordinators and coaches who put these programs together so that our students are well prepared for the 2025 AIC sporting year.

I want to acknowledge each of the Year 12s who represented the College in Sport in 2024 for their dedication and perseverance and for being mentors for our younger students. St Peters has been enriched due to your involvement, and I hope you have made lifelong memories and formed bonds with your peers that will continue into the future.

Last Saturday saw some great results and performances from teams from Year 4–11. St Peters currently has five teams sitting in the top four of the strongest club competition in QLD.

The St Peters Saints had four Year 9s playing on Mayer Oval and dismissed Wests for 119 on Day 1 with Jack N (Year 9) making his debut with 2/18 off 8 overs.

Great wins by the Heat and Hurricanes, and four games going down to the final overs in some very exciting contests.
