Parent Engagement: The Most Important Thing You Will Do Today
Recently, I have had the absolute pleasure of attending numerous Primary Years Creative Expression mornings, Art Showcases and Celebrations of Learning where parents and families have also had the opportunity to attend, share in the learning experiences and engage with their young people. Out of this, if you have attended any of our recent Assemblies, the Community would have heard my message, “Engaging with our children and their learning is the most important thing we will do today.”
At St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, we recognise that education is a collaborative journey, uniting the efforts of students, the College, and families. In 2025 and beyond, we hope to grow these relationships, from involvement and participation to engagement and then improved outcomes. Research consistently highlights the profound impact that parent engagement has on student success, extending far beyond Academics into personal growth and community development.
- Engaged parents foster higher academic achievement, with studies showing correlations to improved grades, better test scores, and increased attendance. These outcomes are complemented by enhanced social and emotional development, including greater self-confidence and resilience in students. When families actively participate in their children’s education, they also nurture essential life skills like problem-solving and teamwork.
- Parent involvement doesn’t just benefit students—it strengthens our broader College community. Teachers report higher morale and a deeper sense of purpose when families support classroom goals. Moreover, inclusive parent-school partnerships help build a positive College culture, creating an environment where our people flourish.
At St Peters, we employ various strategies to cultivate meaningful connections with families. Through initiatives like parent-teacher conferences, College events, Celebrations of Learning and digital communication tools, we aim to create opportunities for collaboration and shared responsibility in each child’s learning journey. One cornerstone of this effort is linking parental involvement to classroom instruction. Providing resources and guidance on curriculum goals helps parents become active partners in their children’s learning at home. This approach fosters a unified educational experience, with families and educators working together to reinforce skills and concepts.
As our College continues to grow, the importance of parent engagement also increases. Together, we can ensure that every child learns every day, preparing them not only for Academic success but for a life of purpose, service, and fulfillment. By cultivating strong, collaborative relationships, we lay the foundation for improved outcomes for the whole community and building our children to be life-long learners.
