“Young people need something stable to hang on to — a culture connection, a sense of their own past, a hope for their own future. Most of all, they need what grandparents can give them.” — Jay Kesler
Each October, our St Peters community celebrates Grandparents Day. It is a time when we formally acknowledge the significant contribution that grandparents and other senior role models make to our children's wellbeing, spirituality, and education. We come together to worship as a school, giving thanks to our Heavenly Father for the blessed gift of grandparents. We reflect on the guidance and wisdom that older generations offer us. Although we could not come together in our usual way this year, our students continued to keep their grandparents in their hearts and minds this week. During class devotions, they shared heart-warming accounts of special times spent with these treasured people in their lives. They rejoiced in their happy memories.
Grandparents love unconditionally and act as a child's personal cheer squad. They have an innate ability to continually notice and celebrate the good in all their grandchildren do. They love nothing more than to tell others about how wonderful their grandchildren are. Grandparents tend to be less critical than parents, as their experience has taught them to look past mistakes to find the good. It is often the grandparents that cheer the loudest at sports carnivals and award assemblies. They encourage children to do their best, and they have faith that they will be successful. This type of affirmation fosters a child's sense of worth and builds their self-esteem. When a child does well, it is usually grandma or grandpa that they want to tell first.
Grandparents can be patient and wise teachers. As an adult, I often return to the advice given to me by my grandparents as a child. My grandfather was one of the wisest men I have ever known. One of my most profound memories of him was on the night that Nelson Mandella was released from prison. I was fifteen years old. Although it was very late, and I probably had school the next day, my grandfather urged me to sit with him to watch the event on television. It was just the two of us. He told me that history was in the making and that the world would be changed for the better. As we waited for Nelson to emerge, he talked to me about the importance of treating all of God's people with love and respect. He also urged me to study and not to take my education for granted. I distinctly remember him telling me, "while many things in life can be taken from you unjustly, nobody can strip you of your education". He also reminded me that I needed to use my education and abilities to help others. This conversation played a significant part in shaping who I am as an adult and is no doubt why I chose to become a teacher.
Grandparents also play a pivotal role in the faith and spiritual formation of their grandchildren. They undertake a unique form of discipleship that helps children connect to their spirituality and religion. As a Christian, I believe that the Holy Spirit works in and through grandparents to teach children essential lessons about morality, kindness for others, and faith. As a little girl, one of my greatest joys was attending church with my grandmother. I would snuggle up next to her and swing my legs from the pews. We would sing the hymns, and she would tell me the stories for each Station of the Cross. In sharing her faith with me, she helped me form my own.

Wonderful Works
“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” Psalm 145:5
The back deck looked directly into the rainforest. Our touch of Daintree paradise gave us opportunity to be still and shed the bark of busyness wrapping our lives. During the day the forest lit up according to the changing light. At night it was dark and loud, and we took to sitting and listening.
One evening we noticed a light moving through the trees. A torch? Surely not people, there was no access. The torch moved, silently and more quickly than a human could. The light source took flight, rising to the lower canopy and falling to the forest floor. What was this strange phenomenon? Maybe a drone? But who could fly one through the forest at night? We had seen one earlier on the beach lingering and leering at the sunbathers. We were suddenly aghast that we had been using the outdoor shower, with its outlook into the forest in the direction of this light. Had we been spied on? Right, a confrontation was necessary – we couldn’t have drones flying in the forest where we were showering!
I pursued the light source, then noticed another. And another. Numerous points of light were floating in the trees. I shone my torch on one and moved as close as I was game. The 'drone' turned out to be a beetle. A bug. A firefly, actually! I had never seen a firefly before, but I reasoned if I were naming a creature 'firefly' it would be this one. This wonderful insect with an ability to glow as it sailed through the forest. I proudly announced my discovery to my wife and a quick internet check confirmed what we were seeing. Bioluminescence.
This revelation was simultaneously convicting and liberating. We had assumed something sinister. Yet this mystery heralded wonder! Fireflies were searching for mates and making a radiant offering for visitors to the forest, if only they were curious enough to enjoy it.
Too often we presume ill and we miss the magic. We expect the worst when there is wonder right at hand. Challenges present as torments rather than exhilarations. Detours are distractions rather than discoveries. Strangers are to be feared rather than welcomed as future friends.
“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” There is wonder in all God’s works. In creation, in knowledge, in art, in science, in humanity, in endeavour, in love, in kindness, in everything. Indeed, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. God grant us his Spirit so we let go of fear and foreboding and see the wonder of all God’s works!

Arise Worship Service
Arise is a Christian Community where people gather each Sunday morning at 9am in the St Peter’s Hub, to meet Jesus the Light of the World. "Arise, shine, your light has come!" Isaiah 60:1
All are welcome.

Last week St Peters Springfield held its Community Focus Day for Term 4. The focus was our Village Partnership with the Cambodian village Somnang Presh Srei. Students wore free dress for a gold coin donation which raised over $650 for this partnership. The village at Somnang Presh Srei is seeking to build a 2km canal to bring fresh water to the village for drinking and agriculture. Our total contribution will be $5,000.
This is the fourth Village Partnership St Peters Springfield has undertaken. In 2018 we partnered with Damnak Khsan to support the construction of a stretch of road to give all-season access to the village. 2019 saw a partnership with Busoam to build a village pond. In 2020 the project was a Spillway for the village of Chamnak Prasat. In each partnership, the village assigns a Village Development Committee which investigates the needs in the community and selects the project which will deliver the greatest benefit. This is a vital piece of the development puzzle, ensuring local ownership of projects and avoiding costly transport of goods the village doesn’t want, no matter how good we might feel to send them.
To raise the remainder of the funds for the 2021 Village Partnership St Peters Springfield will hold the “Ks for Cambodia!” appeal. This will involve students walking, running, riding, swimming, rowing … their way to Cambodia! Students will have the opportunity to get moving and to seek sponsorship for the kilometres they travel. Stay tuned for this fun campaign!

Primary School Disco
On Friday (15.10) afternoon, Primary students turned up in their best dancing outfits for the SPLC – Springfield P&F Semester 2 disco. The P&F runs two Primary Years discos per year and we feel very fortunate to have been able to do this in Semester 1 and 2 this year. The children really enjoyed our Secondary Years student DJ’s and the dance competitions that they held. The P&F Levy covers the cost of running the disco and we are grateful to the P&F volunteers and Pastor Matt who set up the room, purchased items and packed up the room. This disco, we also trialled a coffee van for the waiting parents (socially distanced on the oval) which was very well received. A big thank you to our Primary teachers who donated their time and energy to supervise and dance with their class during the disco. If you are interested in helping out at the discos next year, please come along to the P&F AGM on Tuesday November 9th at 6.30pm in the Junior High Precint.

White Cane Awareness Day
In honour of White Cane Awareness Day, our Year 1 students discovered the importance of the white cane and how it helps visually impaired people. The white cane has become widely recognised as both a tool and a symbol for independence for people who have vision impairment.
White Cane Day aims to spread awareness to the general community that people with low or no vision are confident, independent and able. This is a day to build awareness about vision impairment and to be proud of your cane. Over 1200 students with vision impairment attend schools in Queensland. Many of these students learn to use a White Cane as part of their Orientation and Mobility Program.
The Year 1 students tried a variety of actives such as making their own white canes, wearing vision goggles while doing a treasure hunt around the College and doing an obstacle course while blindfolded. The activities let students experience what it would be like to be visually impaired and how to provide support for a person who is visually impaired. It was a fantastic learning experience for our students.

We welcomed Mrs Delaney who together with Mr Kotzur has been so supportive of all the exciting initiatives Claudia and Ashleigh have introduced this year. Mrs Delaney thanked the girls and inspired them to continue to make a difference, it was wonderful to watch them listening to her every word.
I look forward to supporting our future Girls Sport Leaders to continue to build on these traditions.
QGSSSA AFL
Last Friday was an exciting day! For a girl who grew up in country South Australia and had a desire to play AFL for many years, to see our St Peters girls head off for the first for the AFL Skills Development sessions, it really was a special day!
These sessions are run by AFL QLD and they concentrate on the fundamentals of the game, all the coaches were pleasantly surprised at the skill level of the girls. St Peters has been fortunate enough to welcome onboard to assist with coaching Old Scholar and Brisbane Lions player Greta Bodey (2012). Greta also brought along Lions teammate Gabby Collingwood. We are excited to put together our St Peters team of coaches as we prepare for the commencement of games next year.
Well done to all the girls, there was positive feedback after the session from all involved and we look forward to session number two this Friday 😊

It is shaping up to be another incredible season of Water Polo, the girls have well and truly embraced the season with some outstanding games so far. Whether they win or lose our girls are always commended on their sporting resilience, positive demeanour and the way in which they are gracious when they congratulate the opposition team at the end of the match.
A special mention to our wonderful Water Polo parents who are upskilling with a Blue Card and table duty course, so they can support the teams with scoring.
We must make special mention to our parents who have taken on a Manager’s role, this role is very important to assist our Coordinator Tracey, thank you.
The Girls Water Polo season is a long season and girls are committing to two nights per week for training as well as their game on Saturdays. As it is such a gruelling sport, it is important that all girls on the team attend their games, so a full bench of subs is available. Our girls have shown great resilience to date with some teams down players due to other Sport commitments, the enthusiasm of the younger girls to step up and play a second game is admirable. Well done to all teams!
Round 2 Water Polo Wrap
The week leading into it Round 2 saw us dealing with the excitement of the Year 12’s last day, dodging storms and adjusting to last minute game changes. Training seems to be going well although attendance has been down for some teams and we would really appreciate it if where possible you could get to training. Water Polo is a game of structure and strategy. It is extremely hard for coaches to get our teams playing with structure when they have so many girls missing at training.
A very windy Game Day saw the following results:
18B (Open) Won 9 - 6 v AHS White. Great improvement from last week especially with the mushroom set up. Coach Amelia was happy with the defensive set up. It was pleasing to see the team driving and taking shots.
17C Won 11 - 2 v AHS White. At 5.45pm on a Saturday Night we didn’t know what to expect but the 17C team certainly turned up to play. Our defense was relentless giving us a number of fast breaks and scoring opportunities. Chloe M, the award winner was a standout showing great skills and shooting some awesome goals. Coach Lorena was happy with this great team performance! Special thanks to this team for putting in the lane ropes post-game and showing just how great St Peters is!
16C Won 15 - 1 v Brigidine. Great counter attacks saw us well in front all game. Grace E-W came away with the Player of Game award for her 5 goals and her fantastic all-round performance. Alice H was also active in front of the goals putting 6 goals into the back of the net. The shared goalie role by both Rose J and Brienna G and the fact they both go into the field is a great thing for this team. After Round 2 this team has scored a total of 36 goals and let in 2 goals!! (Water Polo Qld may well look at promoting this team to the B division!)
15B Lost 18 – 8 v Mermaids White. A change of venue saw us playing out of Marist College Pool. A timing mishap in the first quarter saw our 7-minute quarter blow out to approx. 14 minutes! Unfortunately for us a slow start saw us 15-4 down at half time. After half time we looked better and we won the second half 4-3. Full time score 18-8. Prize went to Elspeth for her 2nd half goal saves.
15C BYE
14B Lost 2 - 8 v AHS Blue. Defensively we got a lot of ball. In attack we need to hook out to give the goalie someone to throw to and we need strong drives. We can see improvements from last year already and we have no doubt after another couple of training sessions this team will lift again. Congrats to Romi V-B for picking up the team award, her defense was awesome.
14C LOST 7 - 6 v Loreto White. Both teams were evenly matched going goal for goal throughout the whole game. Mr Kotzur was very impressed by the way the girls kept fighting for the ball in defense, this was an enjoyable game to watch. Our teamwork and quick passing are on the improve. Congrats to Eva G for being awarded with the Turn & Burn prize for her great defensive steals.
13B Won 10 - 5 v Loreto White. Coach Sophie described the game as exceptional. We went into the 3rd quarter winning 5 - 3 and came away with a 10 - 5 win. Laura Mc played like a champion and came away with the team award. We saw great hooking and fouling and Lara N was great in goals.
13C BYE
12B LOST 5 - 12 v Mermaid White. We got off to a great start and then the wheels came off, it was one of those days where things didn’t go our way. We got good defensive steals but put ourselves under pressure by passing the ball back to the opposition. This team has a huge amount of talent and we are sure they will learn from this game. Emma W showed a lot of determination and was awarded the award for the player this week
