A very warm welcome to the 2023 school year. For those who are new to St Peters I hope that you settle in well and feel part of our community very quickly.
It is wonderful to have students back on campus this week. Schools are very different places when our students are present. Our students bring a life, energy and sense of hope and joy to St Peters. It was terrific to witness the smiles on their faces and the excitement in their voices as a new school year begins.
It is important that our students make a positive start to the year and lay strong foundations for the year ahead in order to set themselves up for success. Establishing good habits around homework and study, demonstrating a positive attitude towards classwork, being organised, managing time effectively, setting goals and challenging oneself are important elements of laying the foundations for success. Part of laying the foundations is the expectation that our students hold high expectations of themselves and pursue their personal best in all that they do. Holding high expectations of ourselves is reflected in getting the seemingly small things right – like uniform, punctuality, good manners, and work ethic. I encourage all our students to get these ‘small things’ right. If they do this, it will help to set them up for success in the ‘big things’.
I wish all in our community a wonderful 2023 and look forward to seeing people around campus as the year unfolds. Plus Ultra!

The importance of the St Peters uniform
Welcome back to the new school year! I am thrilled to have all of you back on campus and am looking forward to another year of learning, participation and growth.
To our new students and families, I extend a special welcome. We are excited you have joined our College community and look forward to getting to know you. I would also like to take a moment to thank our dedicated staff for their hard work and commitment to providing the best education and support to our students.
St Peters Uniform
Since 1945, St Peters Lutheran College has valued its school uniform, serving as a means of common ground for students that unites them into a single entity. Despite various changes over more than seven decades, the purpose of the College uniform has always been to enable students to develop a sense of belonging to St Peters as a unique educational and faith community.
Wearing of the uniform has been important in establishing and building of our culture. A strong culture of uniform quality and consistency supports a school environment that has; a strong sense of community, is committed to the pursuit of excellence and where teaching and learning is central. The uniform serves to establish the College’s expectations of students and students’ expectations of themselves. When dressed to a high standard, students’ choices reflect those high standards.
The College is conservative in its approach to the Student Dress Code to reinforce an emphasis on the values of care, dignity and respect, a focus on student learning and ensuring students learn the importance of excellence in presentation. The uniform is designed to create a sense of individual and collective pride in students and their identification with the College as a unique community.
Wearing the uniform correctly is an expectation for all students enrolled at the College. The school uniform draws attention to our College, and great care should be taken to ensure it is always worn to a high standard, is kept clean, neat, and repaired and replaced, as necessary. We ask all students to reflect on what it means to be a member of the St Peters Lutheran College community, to remember who they represent when they are wearing the College uniform and to ensure that they are always wearing it with pride.
Over the coming weeks I will be focussing on the different components of the College uniform, highlighting the College expectations and the consequences for not meeting these expectations.
General Uniform Requirements
Lower Primary
uniform four days per week. The dress uniform must be worn on Chapel Day, Wednesday and for most excursions other than sporting events.
Upper Primary
Upper Primary students wear their sports uniform every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The formal uniform must be worn on Monday and Wednesday.
Junior High and Senior School
Students are expected to travel to and from school in formal uniform – even if travelling by car. All students are expected to change at breaks (i.e., morning tea, lunch).
All students with practical activity (HPE / Life skills) in P1 and P2 are required to change at school before the start of the structured school day.
If students have sports training before school, they may come to school in full sports uniform but will change to formal uniform before the start of the structured school day. If they have HPE in P1 and P2 then they may remain in their sports uniform unless there is a formal occasion at the start of the school day.
If students have sports training after school (i.e., training finishes after 4.30pm), they may travel home in full sports uniform. Students will change into sports uniform at the end of the school day if they have after school training.
Students who have HPE after lunch and are expected to attend Music rehearsals until after 4.30pm may remain in full sports uniform and travel home in full sports uniform.
Boarding students are considered to be day students when applying the sports uniform expectations.
It is acknowledged that formal occasions, including presentation assemblies, are different and there is a need to maintain a sense of formality that the formal uniform brings to these occasions. Full formal uniform will be worn on such occasions.
Students who have difficulty adhering to this process e.g., obligations before or after school or regular lunchtime music lessons or meetings, should discuss the matter with the Deputy Head of Junior High or the Deputy Head of Senior School who will decide if an exemption might be granted. Support material such as a parental note may be requested.
Looking forward to seeing you around campus and at upcoming College events.

A parent’s prayer for a new year
A new College year can be a trying time for parents and families. As children and teenagers start their first day of Prep, Years 7, 10, 12, or whatever Year Level it is, it is normal to have feelings of worry or trepidation as parents. Psalm 94:19 is a great verse to hear at these times; "when my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer." As you and your family start the 2023 school year may you be comforted with the assurance that you do not walk this journey alone, that the staff and parent community of St Peters is here for you and that importantly God goes before you, and with you, to accompany you.
Prayer: Lord, I give this school year to you. I pray that each of my children will learn exactly what is right for them to learn. Help them to master new skills and increase their love of learning. Prepare them for what you have for them in their futures. Protect them from what is harmful to them and expose them to what will grow them. I pray that they will have good attitudes and a willingness to work hard. Give our family peace during this school year. Thank you for loving them, protecting them, and caring for them. Into your hands, we commit this new year. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Welcome to 2023. As the school year commences, a reminder that the Langer Library supports Years 7 to 12 students and is open from 7.45am - 8.30pm Monday to Thursday and 7.45am - 4.00pm on Fridays. Throughout the year there may be some minor changes to the opening hours - especially in the first and last weeks of terms. Please watch this newsletter for any alerts to changed hours.
After school - Day students and Boarders in Years 7-12 are most welcome to make use of the Langer Library’s extended hours. Years 11 and 12 students: the Theile House Study Centre will be open from 7.45am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 7.45am - 3.15pm on Fridays.
Upper Primary students - Years 5 and 6 - are asked to refer to the Upper Primary Administration for information regarding their afterschool facilities.
We have many exciting activities planned for this term and will commence with two library celebrations in Week 4: Queensland School Library Week and Library Lovers Week. Lots of fun activities are planned! Our Student Book Club is held fortnightly on Thursday Week A during lunchtime and will commence in Week 3 (9 February)
St Peters’ Academic Hub welcomes all families, both old and new, to the start of 2023 academic year. It has been wonderful to see lots of excited faces back on campus this week and to have a ‘normal’ start to the academic year.
Orientation Day took place last Friday for many new students and I had the pleasure of speaking to the new Year 11 students in Senior School. Year 11 can be daunting even when one is not starting at a new school, so I was happily surprised by the enthusiasm and interest this group of young people showed in discussions regarding their academic life at St Peters.
I encourage new parents to familiarise themselves with both Firefly and the Community Portal as they are a critical resource for information, in addition to the weekly newsletter. Of particular interest should be the College Calendar, which notes important upcoming dates such as the Scholar’s Assembly and Junior High Academic Awards ceremonies, as well as parent information evenings.
As we start the new school, some students and parents may have concerns about the subject choices. Please continue to email any subject changes to subjectchanges@stpeters.qld.edu.au with the final deadline for changes being Friday 3 February.
May 2023 be a year of growth for all.

Primary Years news
Welcome Parents and Caregivers to the start of the Primary Years school year!
The overall feeling in the Primary Years on Monday was one of excitement; perhaps a little trepidation and a reconnection with friends and teachers. We welcome especially, our new families to the Primary Years and our youngest students as they commenced their first year of school in Prep. Years 5 and 6 students were thrilled to experience their new playground. Thanks must go to the Primary Years Parent Support Group for their generous donations in the construction of this new play area in Upper Primary.
As we begin the year, I want to remind you of the important role you play in your child's education. Research has shown that parental involvement in a child's education is one of the most important factors in their overall success. We encourage you to stay informed and involved in your child's education by regularly checking Primary Years page on Firefly (you can find this page here), attending parent-teacher evenings, and volunteering at the school.
I also want to remind you of the importance of regular attendance and punctuality. Consistency in attendance and punctuality is essential for academic success, as it allows students to build and maintain positive relationships with their classmates and teachers. It also allows them to begin their day in a calm and settled manner.
We understand that the beginning of the school year can be a worrying time for both parents and children. We want to assure you that we are here to support you and your child throughout the year. We encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any concerns or questions.
This year we welcome seven new teachers to the Primary Years. These new teachers come to us with a breadth of experience both in primary schooling and in the PYP, and I know they will enhance their teams and the St Peters community. Welcome to
Mrs Corina Lancaster in the Prep B classroom working in partnership with Mrs Danielle Richards.
Mrs Natalia Grieves and Miss Hannah Tillin make up 2/3 of our Year 2 teaching team for 2023.
Mr Will Carroll into the Year 4 team.
Mr Alex Eggersdorff and Ms Allenspach join the team in Upper Primary.
Mr Lockie Burmas to the PE Department and his work in Lower Primary.
We warmly welcome these new staff members and trust that they will become an integral part of St Peters into the future.
We are thrilled to have the students back in the classroom and are looking forward to a successful college year.
Lisa Challenor Head of Primary Years
Junior High
JUNIOR HIGH NEWS
Welcome to 2023!
On behalf of the Junior High staff I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the year. This week I have encouraged the students to be positive about the year ahead and focus on what we believe to be the three ‘Keys to Success’ at St Peters.
Treat each other with CARE, DIGNITY & RESPECT. This also includes showing self-respect through your actions, words and use of technology.
GET INVOLVED – St Peters offers an amazing array of opportunities - so ‘Have a Go’! It’s a great way to make new friends and develop new skills.
Have a Plus Ultra Attitude & a Growth Mindset. Work hard and DO YOUR BEST. When you know you’ve done your best you can always be proud of your achievements.
Friday’s 'Orientation Day' has enabled all Year 7 students and new Years 8 & 9 students to adjust to their surroundings prior to the start of the school year. A special welcome to our new families – 152 new Year 7s, 11 new Year 8s, 23 new Year 9s.
I have been particularly impressed with how the students have been able to take the initiative and approach problems with a sense of fun and adventure as they read timetables and find their way around such a large campus. Equally pleasing has been the friendliness exhibited by returning students as they welcome new members to our community.
COMMUNICATION
In a large organisation such as St Peters it can be challenging to work out who to contact if you have a question or concern. Over the coming weeks I hope to showcase the ways you can keep informed. To start the year off well, see if you can check off the following:
Download the St Peters App and subscribe to the alerts. (Returning parents make sure you change it from Upper Primary to the Junior High alerts)
Sit down with your student on their Firefly account and access the following:-
Find Resources – Secondary Indooroopilly – Handbooks (Junior High Handbook)
Find Resources – Secondary Indooroopilly – Year Level Pages
These pages are where most electronic copies of forms are placed.
Do you know the names of your child’s teachers and Year Level Coordinator and how to contact them
TRAFFIC CONCERNS
St Peters is a pedestrian precinct and for the safety of our students and all who live and work on the campus, we minimise the amount of vehicular traffic on the campus roads.
Please be aware that unless a special pass has been applied for and granted, parents are asked not to drop off and pick up their children within College grounds at peak times. These being between 7am - 8:30am and between 2:45 and 3:45 pm. Please DO NOT park at the internal bus stop waiting for your child or use it as a ‘drop and go’ zone during these times.
DATE CLAIMERS
Term 1 has a lot to offer and below are some important events to mark in your diaries.
Parent Information Evenings
Year 7 – Wednesday 15 February – 6pm – 7:30pm PAC Auditorium (Week 4)
Such evenings are designed to give you further insight into the experiences your child will be undertaking this year, as well as information about organisation of their daily school life. Students do not generally attend.
St Peters Yr 7-9 Swimming Carnival
Thursday 2 February – 50 metre pool (Week 2)
Our annual Swimming Carnival is always a fun filled and exciting day. It’s a great way to start the year and for students to show their House Spirit.
This is a compulsory school day and all students are expected to attend and support their house. If for some reason your child is unable to swim they should still attend but please send a note to House Teacher or House Patron (who they will meet this Friday) to explain why they are unable to participate. A great day is generally had by all, with Junior High students usually leading the way with participation and enthusiasm.
A very small canteen runs on the day which students will need their ID Card to access. Students need to bring their morning tea and lunch, water bottle and sunscreen. Students who do not attend due to illness are asked to obtain a Medical Certificate from the doctor.
YEAR 9 LEADERSHIP DAY – FRIDAY 27 JANUARY
Each year, as part of their preparation for taking on formal leadership roles in Junior High, our Year 9 students have traditionally engaged in a range of leadership activities. Unfortunately, COVID restrictions and other factors outside our control impacted on these activities over the past couple of years and the number and breadth of sessions available to the students was necessarily curtailed. However, it is with great excitement that we are again able to present a full day of leadership activities for all our Year 9 students in 2023.
The Leadership Day will take place this Friday 27 January. The key purpose of the day is to build upon the Leadership sessions that were presented during the Year 8 Camp in 2022 where different concepts of leadership were explored and discussed – acknowledging that leadership comes in a wide variety of forms and that all students have the potential and the opportunity to take on leadership roles in both formal and informal ways throughout their lives. The key message will be that leadership is not just about having a badge and that a model of servant leadership is the one that is embraced within the College.
The Year 9 Leadership Day will run from 8.00am - 3.10pm. Sessions will be presented by key speakers from the College, including Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney, as well as some of our past Junior High Captains. Four engaging and interactive group sessions will then be presented by facilitators from yLead, a reputable and very experienced organisation that specialises in youth leadership programs.
The yLead sessions will include exploring the impact that attitude and behaviour has on results, environment and culture. They will also discuss the importance of listening to and respecting the opinions of others even if it is different to their own. Creativity and collaboration are an integral part of leadership. Students will also explore the collaboration of ideas in teams, understanding that there is more than one way to do something.
The final session of the day is one in which the students will be given information about how to apply for the formal leadership positions that are available in Junior High for 2023; these include Student Representative positions (a group of 16 students from which the Captains and Vice-Captains will be selected) and, later in the term, the 18 House Leader positions (two per House).
Students will wear their House uniforms all day on Friday and will also attend their respective House meetings in Period 3 on that day.
I’d like to acknowledge and thank Ms Kelly Fox (Deputy Head of Junior High) for her organisation of this wonderful opportunity for our students.
JUNIOR HIGH ASSEMBLY
In Junior High we always have an assembly on Wednesday Week A and it is my intention to summarise through The Rock the topics covered and achievements celebrated each fortnight. Hopefully, this will assist parents with conversing with their child about what has been communicated at school. Our assembly always begins the Welcome to Country, the Australian National Anthem, and we finish with a prayer.

Senior School
Senior School News
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the 2023 school year. To those families new to St Peters this year, a very warm welcome to our community. We are delighted to see our Senior School Students back on campus and already settling into their school routines. We would like to commend them for their positive approach to the start of the year and we hope that they will continue to strive for excellence in the coming months.
A reminder for parents and students that academic classes commence at 8:05am, and we encourage all students to arrive with adequate time to prepare themselves for the day. We have observed a noticeable improvement in regard to wearing of the uniform, but we ask that parents continue to assist and support us with our expectations, particularly as students travel to and from school.
Last week our Year 12 Prefects attended a leadership retreat held at Ironbark. This was an excellent opportunity to foster and enhance relationships, and to plan for the year ahead with a greater appreciation for the College’s values and traditions. We have no doubt that the Senior cohort of 2023 will leave their legacy and make a positive impact on school culture and spirit in their tenure. Furthermore, the 2023 College Captains were also announced on this retreat. Please join me in congratulating Chloe B and Max McL (College Captains) as well as Joy F and Noah D (College Vice-Captains). We will celebrate these wonderful young leaders at our Captains Installation Service next Tuesday.
We would like to invite all Senior School parents to attend the Parent Information evening which will be held on Wednesday 8 February from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the PAC and a variety of other venues around the College. The evening is designed to provide parents with meaningful information relevant to each specific year group and pathway of study. It is our hope that the night will affirm the important role that parents play in supporting their students through the Senior years of schooling. More information will be provided to parents in the coming days, including a list of staff who will be presenting and the topics to be covered.
Another important date on our College Calendar is our annual Scholars Assembly. This is an opportunity for us to recognise the academic excellence that exists within our Sub-School. The celebration will occur on Friday 3 February at 8:05am. Parents of students receiving awards will receive an invitation with further details.
Starting a new school year can be both exciting and overwhelming, however, I want to reassure you we have the support in place for our students that is required to succeed. Below are three simple tips for students to help ensure they start the year off on a positive note:
Get organised. One key to success is being organised and prepared for each day. Students are encouraged to take some time to set up a schedule or planner to help you keep track of classes, assessments, and other responsibilities (The student diary is a great resource for this). Students should ask for help if they need it, from Teachers, Year Level Coordinators, Counsellors, and peers are all great resources to help students stay on track.
Get involved. One of the best ways to make the most of the St Peters Lutheran College experience is to get involved in cocurricular/extra-curricular activities and clubs. Not only will these activities help students develop new skills and interests, but they are also a great way to make new friends and create a positive and supportive community.
Take care of yourself. School can be challenging, so it's important that students take care of their physical and mental health. Students should ensure they get enough sleep, eat healthy, and take breaks when they need them. If they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, don't be afraid to seek help from their Year Level Coordinator or a Counsellor.
If there is anything we can be doing to assist or support students, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Academic Care and Wellbeing Team as per the details below:
PA Mrs Julie Burton j.burton@stpeters.qld.edu.au Phone: 07 3377 6589
We look forward to working together to provide the best possible student experience in 2023.
Kind regards and best wishes,

Congratulations to The Nutcracker Ballet Choir!
Congratulations to the St Peters Nutcracker Choir who sang for the first week of the Queensland Ballet's season of Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker'. Twenty-one students from Years 7 - 12 volunteered to perform this year. After rehearsals during Term 4, they confidently stepped onto the stage of QPAC's Playhouse Theatre and gave great performances each night.
This is the tenth year that St Peters Choral Program has been invited by Queensland Ballet to sing for 'The Nutcracker'. It was, as always, a wonderful opportunity for the students to sing in professional performances, working with members of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra to support the dancers. Performing the same music each night gave students in the choir at taste of life as a professional musician. They were very aware that whilst for them it was a repeat performance, for the audience each night this was the first, and maybe only, time they would see 'The Nutcracker'. The students responded with great focus, always giving of their best and working to improve each night.
After their final performance, conductor Nigel Gaynor came to congratulate and thank the choir for their performances. He encouraged them to continue singing and sharing their music, making the point that in their performances of 'The Nutcracker' they had enhanced the musical experience of approximately 7,000 audience members.
The St Peters Nutcracker Choir would like to thank Queensland Ballet for their support and the gift of tickets to the second dress rehearsal which allowed the choir to see the whole ballet.

To determine which ensemble is best for each students’ level of musical experience, all students are asked to complete a short audition. These auditions will be held on Wednesday 25 and Friday 27 January.
At St Peters, individual lessons are taught by highly qualified teachers who are experts in their field. We are looking forward to lessons starting again in Week 2 and having the music studios filled with the sounds of enthusiastic singing and playing as students have their first lessons for the year.

St Peters Term 1 AIC Sport
AIC Volleyball, Cricket, Australian Rules, and Swimming are the current IN-SEASON BOYS AIC SPORTS this term and training is currently well underway. It has been a very hectic lead up to our Term 1 sports with preseason training beginning last year.
Also, this term, we will see the commencement of both St Peters Cross Country and St Peters Rowing training for our boys. St Peters Cross Country training is open to all boys from Years 7 to 12, whilst St Peters Rowing will cater for boys in Years 8 to 12. All trainings will continue over the coming weeks of this term and we encourage both students and parents to become familiar with the St Peters App when looking for information pertaining to anything dealing with St Peters Sport.
It is imperative that all boys participating in any Term 1 Sport are now attending training and are available for this weekend’s scheduled trial fixtures against Iona College.
For details of times and venues for this weekend’s trial games against Iona College please check the information on the St Peters App.
For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen sport, so they can improve and refine sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their team-mates.
If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.
Should the sport specific information you are looking for cannot be found on the St Peters App, please contact the below sport specific coordinators.

Welcome back to the 2023 school year and for our new families, welcome to the St Peters Community.
Sport is an important facet of life at the College, and we hope all our girls find a way to be involved as a competitor or supporter throughout the 2023 year. As 2023 unfolds, we look forward to another amazing year of Girls Sport. I hope the perseverance and resilience we have all demonstrated over the past three years will continue to give us the strength and courage throughout this year.
We are blessed at St Peters to be able to offer the girls a wide range of sporting opportunities. We encourage all girls to find a Sport/s this year and to actively participate to the best of their ability. The cocurricular life of the College is a wonderful way to help develop balanced all-rounded young women and build the habits of lifelong regular physical activity.
At St Peters, we pride ourselves on many things but when it comes to Sport, we particularly value commitment and communication. Commitment to a team is something we emphasise in Girls Sport, and parents we would appreciate your support in reiterating the importance of honouring a commitment. When girls sign on for a Sport it is important, they consider whether they can uphold this commitment for the season. Each sport will have two training sessions and a game/meet each week in season and it is vital that girls do their best to attend these sessions. If they are unable to attend a session, we ask the girls to please communicate this with their coach and the coordinator of the Sport.

Thank you to those families who have already registered students for the Centenary Suburbs Charter Bus Service by Brisbane Bus Lines in Terms 1 & 2.
