Welcome to the 2021 School Year
A very warm welcome to the 2021 school year to each and every one of you, whether you are a long time College family, or new to our community. For those that are new to St Peters I hope that you settle in well, and feel part of our community very quickly.
It is wonderful to have students back on campus this week. Schools are very different places when our students are present. Our students bring a life, energy and sense of hope and optimism to St Peters, and so it was terrific to witness the smiles on their faces and the excitement in their voices as a new school year begins.
We are still living with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and it would appear that we will be doing so in the foreseeable future, even with the roll out of a vaccine. It means that life, both at College and in the wider community will continue to be different for some time. Australia and Queensland in particular have in many respects escaped to date the worst of the pandemic. This has only been possible because people have done the right thing by their neighbours and community by adhering to government and health department requirements. All of us need to continue to do the right thing and play our part in keeping our community safe. I would ask for your total support and cooperation in adhering to the COVID Safe Guidelines (titled ‘Caring for our Community’) sent to all families last week. These will be updated from time to time as requirements change.
Also, as part of implementing our Masterplan, construction of our new Centre for Learning and Innovation commenced with the demolition of Luther House over the Christmas/New Year break. Like all major capital projects, the construction of the Centre for Learning & Innovation, will undoubtedly cause some inconvenience to both traffic and pedestrian flow, however the ‘short term pain’ will be worth it as the final product is a state of the art learning precinct that will result in impactful learning for all our students. The Centre for Learning and Innovation is a key part in realising our Strategic Intent of the Strategic Pillar of Teaching and Learning – ‘Enable excellence in learning, in every learning experience, for every learner, for life’.
It is important that our students make a positive start to the year and lay strong foundations for the year ahead in order to set themselves up for success. Establishing good habits around homework and study, demonstrating a positive attitude towards classwork, being organised, managing time effectively, setting goals and challenging oneself are important elements of laying the foundations for success. Part of laying the foundations is the expectation that our students hold high expectations of themselves and pursue their personal best in all that they do. Holding high expectations of ourselves is reflected in the ‘big things’, but perhaps more so in the ‘little things’ – like uniform, punctuality, good manners, attention to detail. I encourage all our students to get the ‘little things’ right, and this will help to set them up for success in the ‘big things’.
I wish all in our community a wonderful 2021, and look forward to seeing people around campus as the year unfolds.
