Tomorrow as a College we will be welcoming back the top academic achievers from last year’s Year 12 graduating class for our Annual Scholars Assembly. The Class of 2023’s academic achievements continued the tradition of outstanding academic scholarship that St Peters has developed over its 79 year history.
The Class of 2023 lived up to the College’s Motto of Plus Ultra – Ever Higher. 1 in 2 students achieved an ATAR or ATAR equivalent of 90 or more – placing them in the top 10% in the State; with 1 in 4 students achieving an ATAR of 95 or higher – placing them in the top 5% of the State. 18 students achieved a perfect score on their English papers. 14 students scored 100 out of 100 over their two years of assessment for a subject; with another 14 students scoring 99 out of 100 for a given subject. Alexis Barnett achieved the highest ATAR possible with a 99.95. To put this in context there was just over 50,000 Year 12s in Queensland last year, and only 34 students are awarded an ATAR of 99.95. A truly Plus Ultra achievement.
These results are a credit to our newest Old Scholars, our newest ‘Saints for Life’, and their work and study ethic, their perseverance, their willingness to engage in class, and the way that they used feedback from teachers to help them to get better. It is also a credit to the teachers at our College- their expertise, skill and the quality of relationships that they formed with their students. I wish to publicly acknowledge the efforts of our teaching staff for their diligence, dedication, expertise, professionalism and care.
As our motto ‘Plus Ultra’, Ever Higher suggests we are committed to the ‘Quest for Personal Bests’ in every aspect of College life, but most particularly in student learning. Two of the most important qualities that are fundamental to our students achieving their Academic Personal Best are – attitude and effort. The attitude that students bring towards learning, class and study and the effort they exert in relation to these will go a long way in determining as to whether our young people achieve their personal best. Importantly each student is in control of these. Each of our young people are encouraged to demonstrate a Plus Ultra mindset in terms of attitude and effort in their academic studies.
At St Peters, boundless opportunities exist every day for our students to aspire to and achieve excellence. I encourage each St Peters young person to grab hold of the opportunities presented to them throughout 2024, as they strive to achieve their personal best, their personal Plus Ultra.

Health and Safety on Campus
We currently have students and staff who are affected by COVID-19. As has always been our focus, the health and wellbeing of our students and staff remains our top priority. Please remind your child/ren of the following health hygiene tips:
Wash your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
Use alcohol-base hand sanitiser. Students are encouraged to bring their own sanitiser if possible.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue. Place the used tissues straight into the bin.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Queensland Health strongly recommends that you stay at home until:
you no longer have acute respiratory symptoms
you've gone for at least 24 hours without a fever, without using fever-reducing painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, and
at least five days has passed since either the onset of acute respiratory infection symptoms or the positive COVID-19 test (whichever was first).
We would be grateful if you could please reinforce and remind your child/ren that our health hygiene measures remain our best defence against the transmission of infections.
Important Reminder: Drop off & Pick up within St Peters Lutheran College Grounds
For the safety of all students, staff and parents onsite, I would like to remind parents/guardians to follow the below guidelines when driving and parking around the College.
Guidelines:
When driving in and around the school, it is important to follow these key safety tips:
1. Set down and pick up of students on College grounds is not permitted. Parents and visitors are asked to set down and pick up students outside the College grounds. These restrictions apply from 7:00am to 8:15am and again between 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
The below locations are not set down/ pick up zones at any time:
Ross Roy visitors parking
Business Centre visitors parking
Schneider Staff Carpark
Chapel Carpark
Area beside Boys Boarding
25m Pool Carpark
Primary Years Staff Carpark (near Stolz Oval)
At any roundabout.
2. The general speed limit on campus is strictly 25kph. While driving past the Prep School the speed limit is 20kph.
3. Inside the grounds, at all times, drivers are to follow the road rules, signs and directions as they would on any public road. ‘No standing’ and ‘parking’ signs have been placed to treat specific risks. NEVER DOUBLE PARK OR PARK IN ‘NO STOPPING’ ZONES or on yellow lines.
4. Several areas on the roads throughout the College have been designated as high traffic pedestrian zones. These areas are indicated by a large painted red area within a yellow border. When approaching any of these zones, please be very cautious and aware that pedestrians may wish to cross and that they have right of way.
5. Prep Centre and Rainforest Boom Gates are closed during the following periods:
7:45am - 8:15am
2:45pm - 3:30pm
6. Prep Carpark – ensure to park in the designated parking bays only. Double parking is not permitted.
7. Students and Learner Drivers are not permitted to drive through the College grounds at any time. Student drivers should not be parking on the school campus.
8. Please remember mobile phones are not to be used whilst driving.
Drop off & Pick up outside St Peters Lutheran College Grounds
As you are aware, child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and schools alike. Parking spaces during pick up and set down times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices.
While it is certainly not Brisbane City Council's intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving during pick up and drop off times. Over the next school Term, Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed (ie parking on yellow lines).
Every Sunday at 9:00am St Peters Chapel We’d love for you to join us!
One in the Body of Christ
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12
The diversity of St Peters is beautiful to behold. Just as a body has many different parts, St Peters has many different people who are united in a common time, place and purpose.
We have around 3,000 students across two schools. Each student is unique, blessed with their own makeup of gifts, talents, character strengths and personalities.
Each student brings their own blessing to the St Peters community. When we see our Year 12 students embark on their final year of Secondary School, we are mindful of how far they have come and are filled with hope for what lies ahead. This is a blessing the Year 12s bring to our community. When we look at our Prep students, we cannot but be filled with joy at these big-little-people. They look so big in comparison to their pre-school selves, and parents are overwhelmed with how quickly their little one is growing up. But they look so little in uniforms they are yet to grow into and when compared with every other year level at school. Their gift to the community is to remind us of the journey of growth to maturity and to teach us to be kind and gracious to others, especially to little ones.
Each student comes from a family who loves and supports their child, and who has hopes and dreams for their child. Parents and friends of our students are part of our community too. They remind us that the best outcomes occur when the school and home partnership is healthy and strong.
The staff are the lifeblood of the College, providing impetus and energy for teaching and learning. Staff remind us what it means to serve in vocations for the joy of shaping the development of young people. They inspire us to live life with purpose and principle.
Our Old Scholars are a vital part of the St Peters community. They remind us of where we have come from. They hand on the history and traditions of the College. They bless us with confidence for the future because we see how God has been at work in the past.
There are many more parts to our St Peters community, but the point is together we have something very special. This unity is created and upheld through Christ, the one who has called us to share in life as part of his body. It is in Jesus that we know the life and love of God. It is through Jesus we know the fullness of life and love in community.
God bless you as you enjoy being part of the community that is St Peters!

Update: bus routes to/from (Indooroopilly campus)
Important Notice
As you may know, this year Southern Cross Transit implemented new services to several schools in the local area including St Peters. We are keenly aware of the delays and overcrowding on some of these services. Some of this is due to the general congestion Indooroopilly and surrounding suburbs experience during the first few weeks of Term 1 and we are already seeing this beginning to ease as more students opt to utilise other transport options and as the commencement of extracurricular activities staggering arrival and departure times. We thank you for your feedback which has been helpful in finessing the routes.
We want to assure parents/carers and students that we are working with Southern Cross Transit and communicating with them daily regarding the quick improvement of these services particularly with regard to late arrivals and overcrowding. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this transition period.
Any major changes to the route will be communicated to the St Peters Community but in the meantime, please refer to the Southern Cross Transit website for more information.
St Peters (Indooroopilly) has been working with our bus operators to improve the services offered to the campus. We are pleased to announce the addition of several new services including Centenary suburbs in 2024.
Please note – these services are available to students in Years 5–12.
Southern Cross Transit buses service the following schools in the local area: Ambrose Treacy College, Brigidine College, St Peters Lutheran College and Indooroopilly State High School. The Brisbane Bus Lines Gap Service is a charter arranged by St Peters.
Please remind your students that they must hail the bus to ride.
We ask parents to please not approach the drivers of bus services as they are unable to answer your queries and these conversations cause unnecessary delays to the service. Any questions should be directed to the Southern Cross Transit Customer Service Line 07 3813 8900 or Brisbane Bus Lines 07 3354 3633.
SOUTHERN CROSS TRANSIT
Timetables & Routes
Following feedback from the College and parents, Southern Cross Transit has updated the route and timetable to ensure maximum coverage and an earlier arrival at St Peters. These changes will come into effect from this Monday 29 January.
To view the route on the map you will need to maximise the map and click the checkbox of the relevant bus service. Times are indicative only and subject to traffic congestion on the day. During the first two weeks of school, the roads historically experience much heavier congestion impacting bus journeys. Many of the students being dropped off and picked up in cars in the first few weeks opt for other transport options from Week 3 which significantly improves the running of bus services.
Southern Cross Transit also runs a standby service should any student miss the bus due to changes in the timetable. To access this service, please ring their emergency line 0418 165 547 to inform the Duty Manager that they require collection.
We would ask for your patience during this transition period as Southern Cross Transit finesses these new routes. Any major changes will be communicated to parents.
How to use the service
All registrations and fares are managed through SMARTCARD via Southern Cross Transit. You can register your students for Travel Passes here. Cash payments are no longer accepted.
Parents and students can track the progress of their bus via the TransportMe app.
BRISBANE BUS LINES
The Gap
The Gap bus service will continue to be offered separately by Brisbane Bus Lines. Route and timetables are available via the Location & Transport page of our website. Fares for this service are $5.30 per journey and students use their student ID to tap on and off the service. St Peters will issue an invoice each Term for all journeys taken.
For more information on Indooroopilly campus buses, please contact Nicola Britton, Community Liaison Officer | 3377 6155 | community@stpeters.qld.edu.au
YOUR CHILD'S SAFETY DEPENDS ON ALL OF US
DROP OFF AND PICK UP - PARKING & ROAD SAFETY
We understand the back-to-school traffic and parking challenges that many of our families face. Our foremost priority is YOUR CHILD'S SAFETY.
YELLOW LINES – NO STOPPING OR PARKING AT ANY TIME
These areas are marked with a solid yellow line. There is NO stopping or parking in these areas at any time except in the case of an emergency. Yellow lines are marked to allow for vehicles to safely pass, turn in and out of the college, and aid with road visibility. Parking in the area with marked with a yellow line is illegal and creates a extreme safety risk for students and obstructs traffic movement.
DOUBLE PARKING
Stopping on the road beside cars in the pick up zone is highly dangerous for your child and the safety of all our children as they enter the road to get into the car. This should not be done at any time. It also blocks any traffic, including school buses from flowing through, creating bottle necks and build ups.
PRACTICE PATIENCE – ARRIVE LATER
If you are able to please consider arriving later. Waiting 10, 15, 20 minutes to pick up can make a huge difference to the transit pick up area and to the traffic flow and to student safety.
CROSSING THE ROAD
Remind your children about mindfully and safely crossing all roads around the College. This also includes the roads on the way down Harts Road to the train station including Graham Street, Dennis Street, Kew Street and Webster Road.
BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL AND QUEENSLAND POLICE - Council and Police continue to undertake frequent monitoring throughout the school year. Penalties and fines can be issued by both Council and the Police. Although traffic and parking outside the College grounds is under the jurisdiction of the Brisbane City Council and QLD Police for traffic and parking infringements, the College works closely with our local Councillor and local police to continue to explore options for road safety and keeping our students and families safe and ensuring the safety of all our students.

Parent Information Evening Years 1-4: Tuesday 6 February 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Parent Information Evening Years 5 and 6: Thursday 8 February 6:30pm - 7:30pm
These information sessions will take place in the classrooms; however, there will be an opportunity for discussion with the Primary Leadership Team and relevant Specialist Teachers between 6:00pm and 6:30pm at the Grey Umbrellas both in Upper Primary and Lower Primary on these evenings.
We will also provide a PowerPoint of the main points discussed on your Year Level Firefly page which can be used as a future point of reference. We look forward to meeting with you, to discuss the exciting year ahead.
PRIMARY YEARS LEADERS - 2024
Next week at our Upper Primary Assembly, we will induct our 2024 Primary Years Leaders. Starting in the early years, our students are encouraged to explore their leadership potential. Classroom responsibilities, peer collaborations, and participation in school events all contribute to the gradual development of leadership qualities. As students’ progress through the Primary Years, they take on more significant roles, allowing them to step into leadership positions with confidence.
While some students may hold formal leadership positions, we emphasise that leadership is not exclusive to those with titles. Every child has unique strengths and talents, and we celebrate and encourage each student's ability to lead in their own way. Whether it's helping a classmate, taking initiative on a project, or demonstrating kindness and inclusivity, these actions embody the true spirit of leadership at St Peters.
Over the course of the next few weeks, you will hear from our 2024 Primary Years Leaders and what leadership means to them together with their hopes for the Primary Years into 2024.

Junior High
JUNIOR HIGH NEWS - Week 2
After a busy but successful first two weeks of the school year, Junior High staff and students have begun to settle into the routine of the Term.
The annual Junior High Inter-House Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday this week. It was a colourful spectacle with Junior High students showing great enthusiasm and actively participating in events throughout the day.
UNIFORM REMINDER – HPE UNIFORM
Unless a student has sports training before school, they should not be leaving home and arriving at school in their HPE uniform.
Unless a student has sports training after school, they should not be leaving school and arriving home in their HPE uniform.
Junior High Students are expected to change into their HPE uniform in the break prior to their lesson and change back into their formal uniform at the next break.
The HPE uniform is to be worn to all HPE classes and sports practices unless otherwise advised by the teacher in charge. Bike pants are not to be worn throughout the school day – they are for training or games only. Correct St Peters PE shorts must be worn.
Coloured House shirts are worn to House events, including House meetings and activities. They are not to be worn to HPE lessons.
White SPLC Sports socks are to be worn to HPE and when representing St Peters at sport, on and off campus. Sports socks are not to be worn with formal uniform and vice versa.
There is to be no mixing and matching of uniform and non-uniform clothing or mixing formal uniform with sports clothing.
UPCOMING EVENTS IN JUNIOR HIGH
Friday 2 February - Year 9 Leadership Applications due
Following on from the successful Leadership Day held last week (facilitated by yLead), all Year 9 students were encouraged to consider applying for formal positions of leadership in Junior High for 2024. The applicants will then be shortlisted and interviews held in the coming weeks. For those Year 9 students interested in House Leadership positions, these will be selected later in the Term.
Tuesday 6 February Junior High Parent Information Evening (6:00pm – 7:15pm)
This evening is designed to give our parents further insight into how they can support their Junior High child as they experience their first few years of High School. The purpose of these evenings is also to provide parents with the opportunity to understand the range of support networks we have available at the College as students progress through Junior High.
The formal information session begins in the Dron Auditorium at 6:00pm. Students do not generally attend but may go to the Langer Library if required. The first part of the evening will be a general Junior High session for all parents, with several guest presenters delivering a range of important information. After this, parents will meet with the respective Year Level Coordinators who will be presenting and discussing information specifically related to their particular Year levels.
At this Ceremony we will celebrate the success of our students in in their academic pursuits in 2023 and also recognise the Year 9 students who demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment while at Ironbark. Students who were in 9LM in 2023 and at Ironbark when the Cocurricular Awards presentation ceremony was held at the end of Term 4, will also receive their certificates and awards. Parents of those students who will be receiving either an Academic or an Ironbark award will be notified by email and invited to attend the presentation ceremony. It's worth noting the significance of swimming, especially in Queensland, where access to water activities is not only enjoyable but also crucial for safety and well-being.
Sport for life
This week our Sport for Life sessions kick off for students in Years 4-6, scheduled every Friday afternoon. It's an exciting chance for pupils to immerse themselves in a selection of sports they've personally chosen. Exploring a variety of sports and games over the course of the year will be vital in promoting physical literacy, building social skills, and fostering a sense of adventure. Encouraging students to try out new activities plays a significant role in their holistic development and overall wellbeing.

A Wellbeing Plan for the School Year Ahead
The jitters, excitement and unease of the unknown from the first week of school has now passed, hopefully replaced by a returned sense of calm and routine in many of our St Peters’ households. School based and extra-curricular schedules and plans will be becoming well established and we were wondering over here in the wellbeing space, if our families also have a wellbeing and mental health plan firmed up for the school year ahead?
Firstly, how do you plan to take care of yourself and fulfil the metaphor of putting on your own oxygen mask first? There is an endless and unique constellation of options, some of you might be thinking connection with others, firm boundaries to protect your time, self-care, expressed gratitude, outsourcing or whatever makes you feel good and function well through the often hectic nature of a school Term.
A second plan is of course for your child or teen. Have you intentionally and critically thought about what fills their cup to keep them in the best possible head space for the year ahead? On every child or teen’s list will be connection with their parents (if they want to admit it or not!) and peers, a balance of screen and green time, a balance of extra-curricular and down time, and the myriad of other things that makes them so wonderfully unique.
Finally, having a known support network to reach out to in time of need is a solid safety net and first line of defence in a trying time. Each person’s path to support will be walked a little differently, but having a personal connection and a College based connection that you can confidently reach out to is a great first step. In addition, having a trusted GP and using reputable sources of online information to put you on the right path will round out an initial wellbeing plan for the year ahead.
Throughout the year, we will bring you a variety of mental health, wellbeing and positive education snippets and articles that will, we hope, continue to enhance our understanding of, and therefore capacity to act upon our own and collective wellbeing.
