State Government announces Location of New State Primary School
Many in our community would have seen the recent State Government announcement that the proposed location of the new State Primary School in the inner west is on land currently occupied by Indooroopilly State High School. This new proposed State Primary School is for 600 students and will occupy land on the western side of the ISHS campus near Ward and Canarvon streets. It is the intent that the school would be operational from the beginning of 2023.
From St Peters perspective the proposed location raises a number of challenging issues, particularly around traffic safety and congestion. There is already significant traffic congestion in the area at drop off/pick up times due to the location of the four existing schools in the area. Adding up to an additional 600 car movements every morning and afternoon is only likely to exacerbate the congestion and heighten safety concerns.
The proposal to co-locate the new State Primary School with ISHS seems to be one of convenience and cost savings, rather than a well thought out medium to long term solution to the needs and growth of the inner west of Brisbane. It is interesting that no other alternate sites were suggested for the school, as is generally the case with such developments.
The Education Department began what appears to be a very rushed public consultation period at the start of January that will run to the end of February. Members of the public can have their say about the proposed development by engaging in an online survey:
I was sitting in the pews the other day, listening to stories about the first days of Jesus’ ministry, and the people he met and interacted with. It got me thinking about the new school year, about the people we are going to meet, about the encounters we have, and about friendships we make.
During the holidays, I was lucky enough to head back up the coast for a short while, to spend time with great friends. I also had the opportunity to go back to my old congregation. There I caught up with a number of old and dear friends – and it was like we were never apart. I also had the opportunity to chat with members there that I’d never gotten to know really well, and to meet with new people who have joined since I left. This time with them had me thinking about how we encounter people… how we make connections…
During our lives we are constantly encountering people. Many of those turn out to be of little significance and are soon forgotten. But other encounters can turn out to be of great significance – they enrich our lives and can even utterly change them. A bond is formed almost immediately and we can be free to be true to ourselves. Imperceptibly we notice a difference in our lives because of the friendship that has grown.
In the Bible reading for the day I got a glimpse of the importance of people’s first meeting with Jesus. The lives of those who were to be disciples were completely changed. We too find similar changes happening in our lives as we encounter Jesus and discover how he changes our way of thinking.
I believe that what makes St Peters truly unique is the relationships we form, the connections we make with each other. This is the heart of the Lutheran ethos that forms St Peters - We are called to be the Gospel of Christ amongst the people of St Peters so that all may experience authentic life in a restorative community. To experience an authentic life means that each person is allowed and encouraged to discover who they are and who God calls them to be in community.
So as the apostles were called to serve, each one of us too are called to serve. The initiative lies with Jesus who meets us again and again in each other: in the students, in the parents, in the staff, and more specifically in the Word and devotion and worship. The call is Christ’s; he can speak to the depths of our hearts, calling us to relationship with himself and to be a co-worker with him in the world. May you have a blessed year, full of fellowship and friendship.

Primary Years
WELCOME TO 2021
A warm welcome to our 2021 school year. The students and staff have had a smooth entry into their classes which sets everyone up for a settled and productive year ahead. Last week we acknowledged the new students to the College at our assemblies and know that our returning families will support them to be part of our broader community extending the St Peters circle of care to them.
Last Friday evening, there were many new families who came along to the New Parent Welcome Evening. It was great to catch up with some of you there, particularly our Prep parents as you embark on your child’s journey of education with us at St Peters.
PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS
BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL TO ATTEND THROUGH THE EVENTBRITE LINKS OUTLINED BELOW:
The format for each evening is outlined below.
Upper Primary Parent Information Evening this Thursday 4 February, 6.00-7.45pm.
7.15–8.00pm Year 1 to Year 4 Session 2 in class presentations (please note this is a repeat of Session 1)
Ensuring the safety of all adults for this evening is being taken seriously. As such, we will be asking you to book into a session so that we ensure appropriate social distancing. To allow the maximum spread to as many members of each class as possible, only one parent per family will be able attend. If you feel more comfortable, please feel free to wear a mask on this evening.
We will also provide a PowerPoint of the main points discussed on your Year Level Firefly page which can be used as a future point of reference. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss the exciting year ahead.
STAFFING UPDATE
This year we welcome two new teachers to the Primary Years. Ms Anita Voskamp joins us in Year 3 and Mr Josh Bjelke-Petersen has become a member of the Year 5 team. Both teachers come to us with wide experience which will enhance their teams and the educational community. I trust that they will become an integral part of St Peters into the future.
We also welcome back Mrs Sunny Kim this year, and once again is teaching in Year 4, and Mrs Jackie Yorke who returns as our Lower Primary Counsellor. Both women return from parental leave. Mrs Andrea McCarthy who replaced Mrs Yorke will continue to work in a counselling position within the Primary Years, (with a major focus in the Upper Primary).
Pip Morton
At the commencement of the 2021 school year, Pip commenced her role as PA to the Director of Teaching and Learning Innovation after having worked as the Lower Primary Administration Officer since 2018. Pip enhanced this role through her organisation and innovative approach for constant improvement, along with her warmth and understanding with children and adults alike. Pip also updated and improved the approach to first aid in the Lower Primary. Whilst she is already sorely missed here; older students, families and staff of the Junior High and Senior School will be able to experience her keen approach. I trust that you will wish her all the very best as she takes on the added responsibility of her new role.
Elaine Ripamonti
Elaine has been successful in securing a new position within the College as the PA to the Chief Operating Officer, commencing Monday 22 February. Elaine’s experience at St Peters began at the commencement of 2007, having commenced in the Enrolments Department before taking on the combined role of Administrative Officer /PA to the Head of Junior School in 2008. Her process driven approach will ensure her successor will have much to transition smoothly to; but will indeed leave big shoes to fill. Personally, I will miss the dedication and professionalism that Elaine brings to her role, but also her interest in all aspects of College life. These skills will hold her in great stead as she embarks on a new adventure and will continue to be of great value to the College in her role as PA to the COO. The process of ensuring a replacement will be taking place immediately and will keep the community informed as appropriate.
I am sure that you will join with me in acknowledging Elaine’s contribution to the Primary Years and congratulate her on her new role.
Robyn McGlade
Robyn, the Junior School/Lower Primary Teacher Librarian since 2005, announced her intention to retire over the Christmas holidays. She has been a pivotal member of the St Peters’ community over this time and so it is with some sadness that we farewell her. Robyn has worked tirelessly in the Library, setting up students for a love of reading as well as skills in information literacy and technology, and has seen many families go all the way through the College and has continued to enjoy contact with students after they have left Year 12. Robyn’s legacy will be remembered for a long time to come. Her last day will be Friday 5 February, although is enjoying long service leave until that time. We are actively seeking a replacement for Robyn to commence as soon as possible but have been privileged to secure Mrs Jo McNeilly, a popular relief staff member, to assume the role of Teacher Librarian until a permanent replacement has been found.

Junior High
Junior High News
After a busy but successful first week to the school year, Junior High staff and students have begun to settle in to the routine of the term.
YEAR 7 CAMP
The Year 7 students seem to be excited about next week’s ‘Fun and Friendship’ Camp at Luther Heights - Coolum. Such camps provide numerous opportunities for teachers to get to know students outside the constraints of the classroom. At the start of their secondary journey together, Year 7 camp provides a wonderful bonding experience for students as they share their accommodation, meals and bathroom facilities with dozens of their classmates.
There will be very important information emailed out by Mrs Byrne regarding drop off on Monday and pick up on Wednesday.
YEARS 8 & 9 PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
The Years 8 and 9 Parent Information session was held on Monday and was attended by more than 250 parents. It was so wonderful to have our parents back on campus. The initial ‘meet-and-greet’ session provided an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s Form Teacher in an informal social setting. This was followed by the formal proceedings in the Dron Auditorium where parents were introduced to the key staff who work in Junior High and details about our Academic Care and Wellbeing Program and how this is supported through the Student Diary.
For those parents who were unable to attend the formal session, a copy of the PPT presentations from the evening are available on Firefly through the Junior High Parent Information page.
YEAR 9 LEADERSHIP DAY
Our Year 9 students are about to enter the ‘Leadership’ phase of their experience in Junior High – with applications for Leadership positions now available. Next Wednesday students will spend part of their day participating in Leadership Awareness Activities with guest speaker presentations and activities organised by Mr Trethan and Ms Fox.
We encourage all students to consider their capacity to be leaders and the positive contribution they can make to the College in these roles.
HOUSE SHIRTS
The ongoing development of the House System at St Peters received a boost last year with the arrival of our new range of coloured House shirts becoming available for sale through Shop45. All students are expected to purchase a House Shirt in their respective House colour. The shirts will not only be worn for the three main Sports carnivals during the year, but are also expected to be worn when students are participating in the various activities which form part of our House program each term.
DATE CLAIMER – Year 7 Parents
Thursday 18 February | Year 7 Parent information Evening (5.30pm – 7.30pm)
This evening is designed to give our parents further insight into how they can support their Year 7 child as they experience their first year of High School. Parents will have the opportunity to meet with the Form Teachers in the informal ‘meet-and-greet’ session commencing at 5.30pm, while the formal Information Session begins in the Dron Auditorium at 6.00pm. Students do not generally attend but may go to the Langer Library if required.

Senior School
Senior School news
Last Thursday, in a special service held at the College, our newly installed College Captains were honoured and celebrated amongst the Senior School community. I would like to offer my personal congratulations to our Captains - Josiah and Maddie, and our Vice-Captains - Rachel and Jake. I know this team will be wonderful ambassadors for our College and will lead our Prefects and Seniors, the Graduating Class of 2021 with distinction.
After nearly two weeks back at school, it has been very pleasing to see the manner in which students have found their rhythm and established routines to ensure they are using their time with teachers effectively. Organisation has been a focus in these early weeks and students have been encouraged to continue to develop habits that enable them to make the most of their opportunities both in the classroom and with their cocurricular pursuits.
Students are encouraged to continue to use their time well both during the day and also of an evening, particularly at this early stage of the term. This will certainly assist in the coming weeks as the assessment load (and stresses) increase.
This Friday morning our annual Scholars Assembly will be held in the Dron Auditorium (8:05am start) where we recognise the academic excellence that exists within our sub-school. Parents of students receiving awards would have already received an invitation with relevant details.
Next Tuesday 9 February, from 5:30 – 7:30pm, the Senior School Parent Information evening will be held in the PAC and a variety of other venues around the College. We hope that the planned program will allow parents to obtain meaningful information relevant to each specific year group and pathway of study. More information will be provided to parents in the coming days, including a list of staff who will be presenting and the topics to be covered. Due to COVID Safe planning, it is imperative that parents register for this event via the links provided in the invitation.
In the meantime, if there is anything we can be doing to assist or support students, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Academic Care and Wellbeing Team as per the details below:
This week Mrs Gold from the Exceptional Learners Department has been speaking to Years 10-12 students about participating in the Senior School Ethics Olympiad.
In May, St Peters students will be taking part in the competitive, collaborative annual event, discussing real-life ethical issues online with students from around the nation. The Ethics Olympiad offers the chance to think about and build responses to some of the world’s most pressing ethical scenarios. It is judged by professional ethicists from around the world and all Years 10-12 students are encouraged to sign up.
More information about the Ethics Olympiad can be found on Firefly (http://bit.ly/StPeters-Ethics-Olympiad-2021) or by contacting Mrs Anni Gold. Best of luck, students—we’re looking forward to seeing you in action later this year!

All St Peters students are welcome to be part of the music ensemble program - it is not too late! Come and join the music making and fun. Please see PAC Reception for more information or contact music@stpeters.qld.edu.au . You can access the Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule here.

I do hope all our students have had a great first week back at school and are back into the daily routine of both academic studies and cocurricular activities.
Last weekend we saw our Junior and Senior School Boys participate in Round 1 of AIC Cricket, Volleyball and Open AFL. Playing St Edmunds College in trial games the week before served our teams well for last weekends fixtures. It was great to see the cohesion of the St Peters teams come together for games against Padua College. For our teams and their coaches, they can now reflect on what great work they have achieved over the past few weeks prior to the commencement of the AIC season. Last weekend has offered an opportunity to focus on what skills need to be consolidated and what areas need to be addresses for positive improvement moving into this weekend’s Round 2 fixtures.
This coming weekend will see St Peters compete against Villanova College in Round 1 of Cricket, Volleyball and Open AFL. We will also be hosting St Laurence’s College and St Edmund’s College in one of our annual AIC Lead-Up Swimming Meets at our 50m Pool.
Traditionally, games against Villanova College have been heavily contested and this weekend will be no different. It is vitally important that all our students strive to exhibit positive traits of enthusiasm and passion together with a resounding level of good sportsmanship whilst both on and off the field of play.
2021 AIC Ecumenical Service
At the start of each school sporting year, all member schools of the Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) come together to celebrate the commencement of the AIC sporting year. The annual Ecumenical Service is a gathering of Heads of Colleges, Deans of Students, Deans of Identity, Student Sporting Leaders and Heads of Sport to celebrate the important sporting values upheld by each college of AIC. This year’s 2021 Ecumenical Service was held at Iona College, Lindum on Thursday 6 February.
Congratulations First VI Volleyballers and First XI Cricketers
Leading into Round 1 of AIC we announced both our St Peters First XI Cricket Team and our First VI Volleyball Team. At both gatherings we were able to acknowledge and congratulate the selected members of each respective team. Mr Tim Kotzur, Head of College, spoke to the players about being proud custodians of the Cricket ‘Baggie’ Cap and First Volleyball Jersey. To wear them with pride and live up to our College’s motto Plus Ultra. Ultimately, to leave St Peters Sport in a better place!

We encourage girls to come into Sports House if they have any questions regarding the Sports on offer this term.
At St Peters, we pride ourselves on many things but when it comes to Sport we particularly value commitment and communication. Commitment to a team is something we emphasise in Girls Sport and parents we would appreciate your support in reiterating the importance of honouring a commitment. When girls sign on for a Sport it is important, they consider whether they can uphold this commitment for the season. Each sport will have two training sessions and a game/meet each week in season and it is vital that girls do their best to attend these sessions. If they are unable to attend a session, we ask the girls to please communicate this with their coach and the coordinator of the Sport.
Last Saturday saw the Water Polo teams take to the water for the first game of the second half of the season. After an eight-week break from competition, there were some tough games as we came up against teams who had recently participated in the QLD State Championships.
