Ironbark, St Peters iconic Outdoor Education and Working Farm Program celebrates 50 years this year. When Ironbark was established in 1974 it had four goals, chief amongst them “promoting initiative and self-reliance in students, by presenting a challenge beyond that presented in the usual academic areas of school, and to increase the opportunity for students to develop a sense of cooperation, interdependence and community spirit”.
The notion of embracing challenge is pivotal to the Ironbark experience and more broadly to a St Peters education. Challenge is a good thing. Challenge tests us. Challenge teaches us more about ourselves and others. Challenge takes us to our limits. Challenge helps us to grow. Challenge helps us to reach our potential. Challenge helps to become better students, better teachers, better parents, better people. Challenge helps to shape our character.
The College’s Motto Plus Ultra, More Beyond in many respects is a mindset that helps us to embrace challenge, develop resilience, transcend perceived limitations, and reach for extraordinary heights in our endeavours. Plus Ultra is an optimistic mindset that goes beyond traditional academic boundaries, encouraging students to not only excel in their studies but also to explore diverse interests, to seek knowledge, leadership and growth opportunities. It is an abundance mindset that encourages students to go beyond what seems possible – to discover what’s possible, a mindset of exploration and discovery - who they are and their gifts and talents. Ironbark is a lived experience and unique example of this Plus Ultra Mindset.
Throughout their time at St Peters, and indeed in their life beyond the school gates our young people have the opportunity to embrace challenge confidently and become the best versions of themselves because of the Plus Ultra Mindset that they are encouraged to develop as part of programs like Ironbark.

Removal of the Leopard Tree
We would like to inform you of the removal of an old Leopard tree located in the Chapel Forecourt.
The health of the large Leopard Tree located in the Campus Heart at the intersection between the upper and lower Science Building level is declining. An arborist has inspected the tree and advised that the tree has been in distress for some time as noted by the existing die-back of the branch-tips. This may be caused by compaction of the roots and/or drought stress. During the removal of the adjacent retaining wall, large amounts of tree roots were discovered to be entangled within the existing wall that was being removed. Due to the high risk of the proposed works damaging the remaining root system the relocation of the tree was investigated, unfortunately the arborist advised that due to its current health the tree would not survive the relocation. Therefore, the decision has been made to remove the tree.
A replacement tree will be sourced, and the community will be advised in due course of the selection that has been made.

New year, new mistakes, new life
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
We've made it four weeks in and, I have to admit, I've had some moments upon reflection which could have been handled differently in my Year 5 class. A lesson which didn't quite land, a lunchtime interaction lacking my full attention or answering a student’s question with information, when what they needed was affirmation. Yes, I have had moments when I feel I have stuffed-it-up.
We all have these moments, all make mistakes in some way, and until the day we die we are going to continue to find ways to get it wrong. I think this might be why people like new weeks, new days and new years. For the first eight hours of my 2024, I managed to keep it together... And then I woke up... This new term I could have tried to convince someone I could teach no wrong, but that evaporated the first lesson delivered. Yes, our lot in life will be one of constantly making mistakes and getting back up.
So what are we going to do about it? Wait till next year to try and sort out our problems? Goodness, we'd never get anything done with all that waiting. Christians, since the beginning, knew we would sin and fail, and that apology and forgiveness would be necessary. Martin Luther spoke about how this meant every day we 'live our baptism’. We die to our old broken self and rise to the new life given from God. All of our failures, sins and wrongdoings are 'drowned' (pretty intense language from him) and a clean, new, unblemished person rises to face the day. Now, of course, we don't stay clean and new and unblemished, which is why Luther says this is a daily task, rinse and repeat.
I love the verse Lamentations 3:22-23 because it reminds us that God's love is steadfast and ceaseless, irrespective of the number of times we find ourselves repenting for our failures. You are going to stuff-up, you are going to yell at your children, take our your frustration on your partner or make a mess of a relationship. It’s just a fact of life. But, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” It’s a brand-new day to live in God’s forgiveness and restoration.

Community Focus Expo
On Friday, 9 February, the PAC foyer became a hub of excitement, as bunting and balloons adorned the space, and festive stalls lined the upper and lower areas. The occasion? The much-anticipated Community Focus Expo, where the many College student interest groups came together to showcase their offerings.
Throughout the lunch hour, hundreds of students filled the venue, eager to explore the diverse array of clubs and groups. From Access Arts to ConnXions to the Environmental Committee, the Expo showcased over 20 dynamic groups that enrich our campus community. Students had the chance to engage with current members, gain insights into the activities and sign up to participate.
A heartfelt thanks goes out to the group leaders and students whose dedication made this event a resounding success. This event not only highlights the vibrant tapestry of student life but also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie within our school. We look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of these student-led initiatives.

Community Focus Expo – Multicultural Club
Last Friday, our schools PAC was filled with excitement as students explored the wide array of service activities available during the Service Expo. Among the vibrant offerings stood our Multicultural Club, radiating warmth and cultural richness as we welcomed fellow students to join our club. During the expo, Multicultural Captains and Seniors, made their presence known with a delightful display of lollies and an abundance of information about our club. With bright smiles these club members eagerly shared how the Multicultural Club embodies fun, education, and cultural celebration.
"Our club is not just about meetings and events, or just another lunchtime activity; it's an opportunity to celebrate our cultures and embrace who we are!"
The infectious enthusiasm of the club members proved to be irresistible, drawing in a multitude of students eager to join in the festivities. As the sign-up sheets filled up, it became evident that 2024 for the Multicultural Club would be full of new faces, cultures, and fun.
With a newfound surge of energy and passion, the Multicultural Club looks forward to welcoming its newest members and embarking on a journey of cultural exploration and understanding. Together, they aim to continue fostering an inclusive and vibrant school environment where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated.
As we reflect on the success of the Service Expo, let us remember the invaluable role that clubs like the Multicultural Club play in shaping our school's culture. Their dedication to inclusivity and celebration serves as a beacon of unity and inspiration for us all. And a special thanks to all of our Multi Captains and Seniors who participated in the expo, we couldn’t have done it without you!!!

2024 Parent Representatives
Details regarding the 2024 Parent Representatives were discussed as part of our Primary Parent Information Sessions this week and several classes are still seeking Parent Representatives.
These Parent Representatives are an integral part of our school community and an important contact point for Primary Years parents. Parent Representatives, amongst other things, support home-school relationships by liaising between the teachers and parents of the form class (or year level), welcome new families by making themselves known to new parents, helping them transition into the St Peters community.
If you are interested in taking on this important role in the Primary Years, please contact your child’s class teacher or me. Further information regarding Parent Representatives can be found on the Primary Years Parent Information page on Firefly here.
We continue to look for Parent Representatives for 3A, 3B and 3C, 4B and C, 5A, 6A, 6B and 6D. If your child is in any of these classes, and you are interested in assisting as a Parent Representative, please email your class teacher.
Students in the Primary Years have adapted exceptionally well to their new classes, forming positive relationships with their teachers and peers. The positive atmosphere has not only fostered academic growth but has also contributed to the development of social skills and a sense of community within the Primary Years.
I have witnessed countless moments of kindness and friendship. At St Peters we place great importance on fostering a sense of inclusivity and support, and it's heartening to see students reaching out to one another, forming connections that extend beyond the classroom.
I want to express my gratitude to families who have played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the start of this school year. Your partnership and involvement are invaluable, and we are excited about the continued growth and achievements that lie ahead for our students.

Elevate Education - Time Management Year 8
This week, presenters from Elevate Education facilitated ‘Time Management’ sessions with all Year 8 students. These sessions were run in individual Form classes and built upon the ‘Study Skills Kick Start’ modules that were provided for this cohort in 2023. The focus was on the key elements of time management, prioritising and overcoming procrastination. Elevate Education also provide follow-up modules which the Form Class teachers will be able to introduce and utilise in their classes in the coming weeks. Year 7 students will engage in the formal ‘Study Skills’ program next term.
Parents should also keep a watch for the free parent webinars that are offered by Elevate Education throughout the year. These one-hour online sessions are usually held in the early evening and cover a range of topics such as Using Technology Wisely, Time Management, and Motivation. We will let you know when these sessions are offered; parents who register are able to access the recorded sessions afterwards, if you are unable to actually participate in the live webinar.
St Peters Symposium [Parent Session] – Building Resilience in Your Child
You may have already seen promotional material for the upcoming St Peters Parents’ Symposium on ‘Resilience’ which is to be held at the College on Thursday 29 February, commencing at 6:45pm and concluding at approximately 8:30pm. The session will feature Dr Justin Coulson, co-host of Channel Nine’s Parental Guidance and one of Australia’s most trusted authorities on parenting, relationships and wellbeing. The Symposium will focus on developing strength, calm and kindness in our children. During the session, Dr Coulson will share proven strategies to empower children and support them in navigating life’s challenges. As Junior High parents, you may find this session both informative and helpful in supporting your teenager as they face an increasingly complex and changing world.
An impressive quilt featuring cyanotype prints made by Ms Mercier’s Year 8 art class 2023 is now installed in Junior high reception. This impressive work features student drawings of their houses which were then printed using the cyanotype photographic process. The students then embellished the image learning stitching and embroidery techniques. In visual art we love to see a creative project come to an impressive conclusion that can be shared with our community.
We hope you enjoy this artwork.
A special thank you to Ms Karen Greenwood (Visual Art assistant) for assembling the blocks and completing the quilt.

Music Support Group Meet and Greet Social Evening for New (and “Old”) Parents – Friday 16 March 7:00pm
The Music Support Group is a group of parents who are an integral and important part of the Music Department. These wonderful parents support the Music Department, music students and music activities throughout the year. Membership of the MSG is a valuable way for you to support your students musical endeavours whilst meeting other parents of students involved in the Music Program. We warmly encourage all parents involved in the Music Department to join this support group as we welcome all; whether or not you are able to attend meetings; offer to occasionally pour a cup of coffee at a concert or just want to be kept informed.
The Music Support Group’s first event for 2024 is the annual Meet and Greet Social Evening. It is a social, relaxed informal gathering with great music for 'new' and 'old' music families and is also a great opportunity to meet the music staff and other families involved in the music program. This year it will be held on Friday 16 February in the PAC Amphitheatre commencing at 7:00pm.
The MSG will be providing soft drinks, tea and coffee and we ask that everyone “brings a plate” to share; savory or sweet finger food would be perfect. Attached are further details about the evening and the Music Support Group.
If you are a continuing parent, it would be lovely to have you there to welcome those who are joining us this year. If you are a new parent to the program, we look forward to meeting you 😊. Please register your attendance at https://forms.office.com/r/wwjLxfWzsa
If you are not able to join us, please consider emailing MusicSupportGroup@stpeters.qld.edu.au so that you can be on their mailing list and be kept up-to-date with MSG activities.

fraser’s focus
Over the weekend, St Peters teams showcased their prowess across various disciplines. Our Australian Rules teams dominated, remaining undefeated after the first two rounds, with our First XVIII grinding out a nail biting 3-point victory against a spirited St Laurence’s side. On the cricket pitches, despite wet weather challenges, our teams clinched victories with some impressive batting displays, despite the dreaded Duckworth-Lewis system we managed to record some well-earned victories. In Volleyball, although facing tough competition, our players displayed resilience, with several matches going down to the third set, with countless matches being decided by millimetres. Looking ahead, they aim to bounce back stronger. Meanwhile, our swimmers excelled at the meet, combining with QGSSSA for another home meet, achieving personal bests and maintaining early season success. St Peters athletes continue to demonstrate dedication and skill across the sporting spectrum, setting a high standard for the competition.
We look forward to hosting our first Senior fixtures this weekend against St Patrick’s College for Cricket and Volleyball respectively. Looking forward to seeing all the Saints go marching in to support the boys, be it at Mayer oval or sitting in the mezzanine for volleyball! Let’s bring the noise and showcase our St Peters spirit!
