Last Wednesday evening, parents had the opportunity to attend our Senior School Parent Information Evening. For those unable to make it, a link has been emailed with the slides that were covered by various members of staff on the night.
I had the opportunity to share a presentation with the Year 11 parents (albeit very briefly due to time constraints) about the lessons learnt from the highly anticipated Netflix documentary series, 'The Last Dance'. The 10-part documentary explores the life and career of one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, and the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls team, who went on to win their sixth championship title. I will be sharing a more detailed presentation with students in the coming weeks during Year Level Meetings, as I have found that students can relate to the messaging through storytelling.
While the series is primarily centered around the world of basketball (which resonates with many of our students), it touches upon several important themes that can be applied to our everyday lives and the lives of our students. As parents and role models, it's important for us to reinforce these valuable lessons, and what better way to do so than through the example set by one of the greatest athletes in history.
1. The Importance of a Playbook (Planning)
One of the key elements of the Chicago Bulls' success was their use of a playbook, which provided a clear plan for each game and helped the team execute on the court. The same concept applies to all areas of life. Having a plan and knowing what steps to take to achieve our goals can help us stay focused and on track.
Encouraging our students to develop a sense of planning and organisation can help them set and achieve their goals. Whether it's in academics, sports, music or any other area of their lives, having a plan and a strategy can increase their chances of success.
2. Hard Work Pays Off
One of the most evident takeaways from 'The Last Dance' is the importance of hard work. Michael Jordan was known for his unrelenting work ethic and his relentless pursuit of excellence. He would often arrive at the gym hours before his teammates to practice his shots and work on his game. He also had a never-say-die attitude, which helped him overcome adversity and achieve his goals.
This message of hard work is not just relevant to athletes, but to all of us. Whether it's in academics, sports, music, or any other field, success requires effort and dedication. Encouraging our students to put in the time and effort required to excel in their chosen field can have a profound impact on their lives.
3. Failure is an Opportunity to Grow
Another key lesson from 'The Last Dance' is that failure is a necessary part of the journey to success. Michael Jordan faced numerous setbacks throughout his career, including being cut from his high school basketball team and losing several important games. However, he didn't let these failures define him. Instead, he used them as opportunities to learn and grow, and he eventually went on to become one of the greatest players in history.
This lesson is just as relevant for our students. Failing is a natural part of life and it can be a valuable opportunity for growth and learning. Encouraging our children to embrace failure and see it as a stepping stone to success can help build their resilience and determination.
4. Leadership is Key
One of the standout aspects of Michael Jordan's career was his leadership. He was known for his fierce competitiveness and his ability to inspire his teammates to play at their best. He was a natural leader who commanded respect and his presence had a profound impact on the court.
Leadership skills are essential in all aspects of life, and they are especially important for our students as they prepare to enter the workforce and become productive members of society. Encouraging our children to develop their leadership skills and teaching them the importance of teamwork and collaboration can help them succeed in their personal and professional lives.
5. You Can't Win on Your Own
Michael Jordan was undoubtedly one of the greatest individual basketball players of all time, but he would not have achieved his remarkable success without the support of his team. From his coaches to his teammates, Jordan relied on others to help him reach his full potential.
In life, we all need support and encouragement from others in order to succeed. Whether it's family, friends, teachers, or coaches, the people in our lives play a critical role in helping us reach our goals. Encouraging our students to build strong relationships and surround themselves with supportive people can make all the difference in their journey towards success.
It's also important to recognise and appreciate the contributions of those who support us along the way. Whether it's a kind word of encouragement, a helpful hand, or simply being there when we need someone, these gestures can make a big impact on our lives.
6. Believe in Yourself
Another important lesson from 'The Last Dance' is the power of self-belief. Michael Jordan was known for his unshakable confidence, even in the face of adversity. He believed in himself and his abilities, and this self-assurance was a big part of his success.
Self-belief is an essential component of success in all areas of life, and it's something that we should encourage our students to cultivate. Encouraging our children to have faith in their abilities and to pursue their dreams can help them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
7. Getting Rest and Balance
Despite his unrelenting work ethic, Michael Jordan made sure to take breaks and get enough rest, both physically and mentally. He understood that rest was essential to his overall wellbeing and success.
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget the importance of taking time to recharge and restore balance. Encouraging our students to prioritise self-care and rest can help them stay focused and achieve their goals in a healthy and sustainable way.
8. Living in the Present Moment
Finally, 'The Last Dance' highlights the importance of living in the present moment. Michael Jordan was known for his ability to focus on the task at hand and not get bogged down by distractions. He was fully present in each game, and this allowed him to perform at his best.
In our daily lives, it's easy to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past. Encouraging our children to live in the present moment and focus on the tasks at hand can help them make the most of their time and opportunities.
Thank you for taking the time to reflect on these ‘teachable moments’ from The Last Dance. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out and make contact with me.
Sincerely,
