ChatGPT (or Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has been the talking point amongst educators over the past couple of months. Since it was made available in late November, ChatGPT has triggered a wave of headlines and stories. There is both excitement and anxiety amongst educators around the potential use of ChatGPT. There are those who believe that generative AI will lead to a rise in academic dishonesty; while others see it as a watershed moment in education and schooling. The advanced chatbot, which can generate sophisticated text responses based on simple requests, will likely change how we work and learn.
State Education Departments across New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and Western Australia have banned ChatGPT. South Australia, in contrast, is going the other way and embracing this form of AI, with SA Education Minister Blair Boyer saying, "I don't think we can bury our head in the sand here and just think that ChatGPT or artificial intelligence is an overnight sensation that is going to disappear."
Understandably, there are concerns around the ethical use of ChatGPT in educational settings. St Peters is engaging with the technology to ensure that its use does not compromise academic integrity or negatively impact student learning. The College has a clear Academic Integrity Policy that clearly outlines the expectations around assessment.
There is also potentially enormous benefits to the use of AI in schools and other workplaces. Our staff are involved in thoughtful discussion and continuing to learn about the appropriate and ethical use of ChatGPT and other forms of AI. Last week the staff were fortunate to learn more by hearing from a Higher Education Industry Executive at Microsoft ANZ which further provoked our thinking.
A colleague Principal, Dr Paul Browning at St Paul’s School, wrote recently in the Financial Times, AI will keep evolving, and fast. We can either become its slave, a victim of our incessant advancement, redundant and destined for the dustbin, or we can embrace AI and use it to improve life.

Academic Matters
Special Consideration and Academic Honesty
As assessment periods move ever closer, questions regarding Special Consideration and Academic Honesty are raised with more frequency.
Special Consideration, also known as Special Provisions, are short-term adjustments to assessment such as extensions on assignments or rearranging examination times/days due to illness or bereavement. Parents are encouraged to forward the application form for Special Consideration to the Head of 7-12 Curriculum – Students as soon as it is known that assessment has been impacted. This enables the application to be passed on to the relevant Curriculum Leaders and teachers in a timely manner. We encourage students to keep their teachers informed that an application has been made while the form is processed. The Application form requires details of the specific assessment instruments/subjects requiring special provisions as well as evidence of the illness or bereavement usually through a medical certificate.
Academic Honesty, also known as Academic Integrity, is fundamental for all aspects of academic work and is the responsibility of all members of the College community. Our Academic Honesty Policy outlines expectations regarding acknowledgement of sources, authentication practices as well as appropriate conduct during examinations. Students in the Senior School complete an online course on Academic Integrity created by the QCAA to ensure they are fully informed of the implications of any breaches.
Policies and Forms for Special Consideration and Academic Honesty can be obtained by going to the relevant icons on the Firefly dashboard. You are encouraged to make yourself aware of the details within the policies and the whereabouts of the forms.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP IN THE PRIMARY YEARS
A key feature of St Peters Lutheran College Primary Years success is the active ‘student agency’ so evident in the life of the school. One of the key areas the Primary Years focus on are the skills, values and attitudes needed for effective student leadership. The Primary Years Leadership Program aims to maximise the leadership potential of all students by focusing on leadership habits and skills learnt and practiced over time.
In the coming weeks, Mr Kotzur, Mrs Delaney, Ms Challenor, and College Captains, will discuss their journey to leadership and what is expected of student leaders in the Primary Years. Students can then apply for a badged leadership position.
Students will be given the opportunity to deliver a speech to the Upper Primary students or participate in interviews with Ms Challenor, Mrs Sabri and Mr Glass and other staff members. Once their speeches and interviews are completed, the leaders of the Primary Years 2022 will be announced.
Through participation in the leadership program, students are exposed to ideas such as:
Being a servant leader
Public speaking
The attributes of a good leader
Organisational and collaborative skills
Encouragement and problem solving.
At times, Student Leaders will be asked to do the following:
Present information at Primary Years assemblies
Attend a weekly lunchtime meeting
Act as Tour Guides for visitors to the College on important occasions such as Open Days/Evenings and school celebrations
Represent St Peters Lutheran College, Primary Years at special ceremonies
Be available to other students and listening to ideas and/or concerns
Plan for the improvement of school facilities and community activities
Write articles for The Rock and The Review.
Year 6 Leadership nomination forms have been made available to students online. We are hoping to see many students submit a Student Leadership Application by 5pm Wednesday 1 March and look forward to a fulfilling year ahead with all our leaders.
HOME LEARNING GUIDELINES IN THE PRIMARY YEARS
Home Learning in the Primary Years is a valuable extension to the teaching and learning program and a wonderful way to engage parents as partners in the learning process. We value the opportunity for students to engage in playtime and downtime at the end of the college day and recognise the benefits towards personal wellbeing.
It is interesting to note that all contemporary research surrounding Home Learning (or Homework in some contexts) does not always correlate with positive academic success for students in the primary years of schooling.
To further support our philosophical beliefs about Home Learning in the Primary Years at St Peters, and to maintain consistency across year levels, we have crafted Home Learning Guidelines and you can read more about these here.

YEAR 9 LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES
On Monday, a group of 25 of our aspiring Year 9 Leaders, accompanied Ms Fox and Mr Lawn to the Halogen National Young Leaders Day, held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The students were excited to be involved in inspiring sessions involving four keynote speakers:
Anthony ‘Harries’ Carroll, one of the most recognisable lifeguards in the world thanks to the Bondi Rescue TV series;
Hilary Rogers, bestselling writer and publisher, and the author of the Girltopia and the Dragon Girl series;
Bryson Klein, multiple Australian Ninja Warrior grand finalist and part of the USA versus the World team where he won first place; and
Gretel Bueta, current Netball superstar with the Australian Diamonds and the Queensland Firebirds and who has won many individual and team awards including Commonwealth Games Gold.
There were also a number of fun and interactive activities during the day, including dance sessions and videos showing inspiration leadership initiatives by young Australians.
During and after the sessions, our students reflected on what they had learnt about leadership from the presenters. Some of the ideas they recorded and some of the important ones they can put into action included:
Don’t let fear make you fail – the more you fear something the more important it is to do it;
Compromise is very important;
Use the strengths that you have and put them into action;
Try and see things in other people to motivate, encourage and mentor them;
Always put your best effort into anything you are trying to accomplish;
Dream big; do what you love and what you believe in;
Help others to strive and do their best in every situation outside of their comfort zone;
Failure is essential for success – push past it and persevere. ‘Channel fear into performance’;
Life isn’t linear – it’s more like a dot-to-dot drawing - and until all the dots are joined, you aren’t really sure what the picture will look like until you get to the end.

OPEN DAY VOLUNTEERS
One of the ways students can show their school spirit is by volunteering at the College’s Open Day on Saturday March 11. Student Tour Guides and Helpers contribute greatly to the success of the Day. The day runs from 10am – 2pm with some helpers arriving from 9:30 am and staying until approximately 2:30pm to assist with packing up. Students are not required to be in attendance for the entire day - we value their contribution no matter how big or small. A permission slip is available at Junior High Reception for those wishing to be involved and needs to be returned to Junior High Reception by Monday 6 March.
AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS – RULE REMINDER
When school has finished, day students are to leave the school by 3.30pm unless involved in an official, adult-supervised activity.
After 3.30pm, day students who are still at school must go to one of the following:
the Langer Library; 3377 6273
an organised cocurricular activity
Students should not wait in the vicinity of the boarding houses, classroom passageways, locker areas, ovals or other unsupervised areas after 3.30pm. The College cannot accept responsibility for the care of day students during these ‘out of hours’ periods if they are not attending one of the above activities.
Students waiting at the College after 5.00pm due to sports practice or other activities are encouraged to use the College internal bus stop waiting area. If a student needs assistance after hours, they should report to the Langer Library or Boarding Houses.
Students must also leave school in full school or training uniform. No students should be getting changed into free dress at the end of the day to leave school.
TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL
Students are reminded that when in uniform they are representing the College and should always treat others with courtesy and respect. This particularly applies to students using public transport to and from school. The College supports TransLink’s expectation that ‘school students give up their seats to adults who are standing’.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
It is also our preference that students walking to or from school via Harts Road cross at the safety crossing as it is much safer than trying to cross at the roundabout. Recent reports from motorists about students exhibiting a lack of caution when crossing the road are concerning. We want our students to be safe and ask that they be aware of their surroundings and take more care when walking to and from school. This includes the use of mobile phones while walking.
YEARS 7 & 8 CAMP DATES
Organisation for the Years 7 & 8 camps is under way and information will be coming out to parents in the coming weeks. Camping programs are a compulsory part our of Pastoral Care offerings at the College as they develop student connectedness, resilience and self-confidence.

Engineering visit
Christian English, a St Peters parent, gave up some of his valuable time to talk to the Year 11 Engineering students.
Christian is a structural engineer who works for Sedgman in Brisbane. He was able to show some of his projects in incredible detail including mining and processing and the cross-river rail project. Minerals processing is at the heart of what Christian does. He explained how Sedgman actively use data and knowledge gained across four decades, hundreds of processing and materials handling projects, and numerous countries. Christian also spoke of the incredible opportunities for women in engineering and data analysis.
Christian spoke about their engineering-led approach driving their ability to take on diverse challenges with complex 3D images created with high resolution drones used to create detailed drawings. Sedgman pairs their historical insight with fresh thinking and leadership in areas such as new technology adoption. They are also known for their ability to successfully transfer technologies and innovative techniques across commodities.
The students enjoyed and appreciated the presentation very much and the College thanks Christian.
Senior Hospitality
During our Senior Hospitality course, students complete their Certificate II in Hospitality, highlighting the importance of creating connections within the Hospitality Industry to learn about the many career opportunities that are available.
This week our Year 12 class visited the Hilton Brisbane where we were taken on a hotel tour, visiting many guest-facing and hotel heart areas. The students learnt about the many environmental initiatives that the hotel has committed to, including recycling programs and even producing their own honey.
Thank you to Adriane and Emilie who facilitated this experience for us.

Band Camp 2023
Band Camp 2023 was a marathon long weekend of music, dance, marching, games, and fun.
Students arrived at QCCC on Friday afternoon to unpack the 12-tonne truck full of percussion gear and set up the rehearsal spaces. Our army of 130+ musicians made short work of the set up with all rehearsals starting on schedule. Musicians from Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds came together for a series of rehearsals to prepare their repertoire for the coming year. Symphonic Winds was joined by Drumline to begin Marching Band Rehearsals. Drum Major Thomas R took the band through their paces, and they are already in good shape for Anzac Day.
Apart from the great music and ensemble bonding, food also plays a huge part in an annual Band Camp. Students dined together on delicious food and snacked on cookies and thanks to Ms Saffery a wide variety of sweet treats. After a huge day of music making, students came together to bond and create new friendships through activities including Swimming, Beach Volleyball, a games and trivia night and a movie night. Thank you to all Year 12 students for all their hard work preparing Sunday’s devotion and the games and trivia night. They all worked very hard to create a fun and happy environment that was inclusive and encouraging to all.
It would not be a St Peters Band Camp without a dress up day. Students whole heartedly took on the challenge to bring the 'Pirates' theme to the bush backdrop at Brookfield QCCC. For more photos of all Band Camp highlights, please visit the Band’s Facebook page and College Instagram page. https://www.facebook.com/StPetersBands
A big thank you to Head of College, Mr Tim Kotzur, and Deputy Head, Mrs Lisa Delaney, for coming along and joining in on the rehearsals. We were so proud to share our musical gifts with you and show you how far we had improved in such a short time.
A St Peters Band Camp could not be possible without the amazing St Peters staff who put in a huge effort to support our emerging, talented musicians. Thank you to Mr Mark Pradella (Woodwind Coordinator), Mr Kerry Jacobson (Percussion Coordinator), Mr Aaron Rich (Wind Ensemble Conductor and Woodwind Tutor), Ms Amanda Saffery (Music Administrator), Ms Alison Milner (Music/English Staff and Woodwind/Band Mentor) and Mr Peter Hurwood (Curriculum Assistant – Digital and Band Mentor).
I look forward to sharing our musical gifts and talents at our first performance for the term - 'A Night at the PAC' on Saturday 25 March in the Dron Auditorium PAC.

Sporting Behaviour
As we enter a busy time in Girls Sport at St Peters with the QGSSSA Swimming Championships and the start of the Autumn fixtures just around the corner, it is a timely reminder to reflect as a community on our conduct.
Sporting behaviour is the term used to reflect sportsmanship, as it pertains to ethical behaviour, fair play, and respect for the sport, the participants, and the spectators. As participants, we need to appreciate the good sportsmanship and skills of opponents, always display good temper and grace, and give congratulations, thanks and support as appropriate. As Parents and Spectators, we are reminded that children learn best by example. Never use profane language or harass coaches or officials and teach your children that honest effort is as important as victory.
Please recognise the value and importance of coordinators and coaches and support their decisions.
REMINDER
On behalf of the coaches & coordinators of our sports, can we please remind parents to be mindful of picking your daughter up from trainings or games on time.

While over 118,000 families have been supported since 2005, more nurses are needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia. We are proud to have nurses right across Australia including many regional and rural centres, where breast cancer treatment and support may be harder to reach. The McGrath Foundation currently have 193 McGrath Breast Care Nurses, who help individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological and emotional support, for free.
With your help, no one misses out on care.
AIC Swimming Championships – Tuesday 7 March
On Tuesday 7 March, our St Peters Swimmers will line up to defend their AIC Aggregate Winners title in the pool at the State Aquatic Centre, Chandler. For the past six years our boys have won this prestigious event and in 2023 they are even more keen and up for the challenge as they swim for seven consecutive wins. We are extremely proud of how hard our swimmers have worked, and we are now looking forward to watching them compete.
Introducing our 2022 AIC Swimming Captains
Hunter M (Year 12)
Sam T (Year 12)
Michael T (Year 11)
We congratulate our Captains and wish them every success on Tuesday. We are very confident that they will lead the St Peters 2023 Swim Team with great spirit, enthusiasm, and pride as they strive for Plus Ultra in the true St Peters way.
2023 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7 to 12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 Sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one (1) Cross Country session or Runners Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 Sports.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSSA. Let’s work hard in 2023 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
Wet Weather and Cancellations
With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.

The 2022 Grants Program has provided two shipping containers for storage of players cricket bags during the week.
In the past our Cricket players have had to leave their Cricket bags around the school and often in the open or take them home after each training day. The two shipping containers will provide enough space for 196 cricket bags and allow boys to leave their Crickets bags at school in safe and secure storage throughout the week. I know the staff at St Peters will welcome this initiative.
Thank you to the P&F Community Grants for being the catalyst for great projects undertaken by the PSGs.

SPOSA News
Founders Day 2023
Happy Birthday St Peters! Monday marked the 78th anniversary of the beginning of our wonderful school. A big thank you to our Old Scholar, Rebecca Sparrow (1989), who gave an engaging speech during assembly. It was wonderful to see our Old Scholars from the 50s to the 00s and those who travelled from Toowoomba enjoy the day connecting with their inner child while painting or doing puzzles with our little Prep students and then finish off reminiscing over morning tea at the P&F centre.
SPOSA Committee Meeting
Our next committee meeting will be on Monday 13 March at 6pm in the P&F Centre. We would love to welcome any of our Old Scholars who are current parents. Come and hear how you can contribute to the Old Scholars association.
Tutors
The Old Scholars Association has a list of past students who are willing to tutor students from Primary Years to Year 12 in various subjects. If you need a tutor for your child, please look on Firefly under SPOSA Alumni and Archives or contact SPOSA on (07) 3377 6592 and we will put you in contact with these past students.
Old Scholar and Duke of Edinburgh Volunteers
The SPOSA office is always looking for volunteers to assist with organising the archives. If you are a current parent who is an Old Scholar or a current Duke of Edinburgh student looking for volunteering opportunities, we would love to see you. The office is open from 8am until 4pm five days a week, drop in before school pickup and see if you recognise any of the memorabilia from your year. Maybe you recognise someone in one of the many photos to be filed.
