As outlined in our Caring for the St Peters Community, I would like to remind parents, if your child is unwell for whatever reason, they must not come to the College.
If you are unwell
It is vitally important that anyone (students, staff and parents) who is unwell does not come to the College even after a negative RAT or PCR test. If you are unwell for any reason, please stay at home.
If your child is unwell, please ensure you follow your sub-school attendance procedure
If a student presents as unwell during the day, a parent/caregiver will need to collect their child immediately.
Ministry
Dusting off Jesus
It has been such a crazy and, also strange, start to the year; When I pulled out the cross last week for the first time this year, to be the centre point of the stage for worship, the lights revealed a thick layer of dust. Of course, it wouldn’t look good on the screen and perhaps point to a questionable message of our College, so I had to dust it off before we went ‘live’- and the thought hit me: 'dusting off Jesus' was a great image for then situation we have found ourselves to be in; as confusing and different the start of the year has been, we now have to take the dust off to refocus again and rediscover, what it was we were dreaming of last year and hoping to achieve this year: every one of us in our individual lives on our personal journeys or here at St Peters. What did you wish to gain or to achieve, which areas did you want to allow yourself to be challenged and grow in during this year?
Our College Leaders of 2022 will have to dust off the list of ideas they put together last year and revisit, yes, re–acquaint themselves with what may seem a lifetime ago: with what they actually wanted to pursue this year to initiate change, to mark a difference, to leave a legacy as cohort 2022. As College community, in our different roles it is time to reset. And 'dusting off Jesus' is actually a great start to the process as it is joyfully acclaimed in the words of Psalm 100:
On your feet now—applaud God! Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence.
Like a song where every single member of our College is the one note, that together makes the song be heard and enjoyed by all who join and sing along!
Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Taking the ‘dust off Jesus’ is something you are encouraged to do in your personal lives, actually allowed to rediscover God's promise to you every single day that God will be with you every step of your life, be at your side, holding on to you, enabling you to stand tall and be confident in yourself; reminding you that you are deeply loved! And calling you to share this joyful message by sharing Gods love and song with those you meet during your day!
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Like God being faithful – you are invited to embody that message in a way that others get it, what we are on about: sharing life, sharing the joy, celebrate and also being there with and for one another in challenging times.
Go out, joyfully, sing yourselves into God's presence, so that you together become that song that gives thanks to the one who grants it all!

Data collection
Collection Notice for Parents/Guardians
The Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (the department) would like to notify you that a request has been made for your child’s school to provide residential address and other information as required under the Australian Education Regulation 2013.
The school is required to provide the department with the following information about each student at the school:
Names and residential addresses of student’s parent(s) and/or guardian(s)
Whether the student is a primary or secondary student (education level)
Whether the student is boarding or a day student (boarding status).
The school collects the above information by generating a unique and unidentifiable – student reference number (SRN) for each student record. The SRN is also only used by the school for this collection. It is not allowed to be used for any other purpose. The number only indicates to the department that each record provided is for one student.
If required, please update your details on the Community Portal through https://mystpeters.com/
Families with children already at St Peters Lutheran College wishing to enrol a sibling for 2024 are reminded to submit an online application for your child if you haven’t already done so.
Please note that due to very high demand for places in some Year Levels, applications for siblings should be received before the end of Term 1 2022. Please find the online admissions form here.
When you think about what you want most for your child, the responses will probably be along the lines of 'good health', 'happiness', 'balance', 'purpose', 'confidence', 'love', 'self-worth' and 'kindness'.
Wellbeing is the all-encompassing term for this list.
At the end of 2021 the Australian Government launched the National Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which was the first time a national strategy had been formed for this topic. This Strategy was the government recognising a need in response to some distressing statistics such as:
Seven out of 10 of the most common presentations to paediatricians are for mental health,
50% of adult mental health issues emerge before the age of 14, and
66% of parents are unsure of where to go to help support their children with mental health issues.
There are opportunities for pre-emptive intervention in the wellbeing space and St Peters Lutheran College is working to implement Positive Education across the College. Zooming out, Positive Education stems from Positive Psychology, which is the scientific study of human behaviour and thoughts, whilst focusing on strengths instead of weaknesses.
The College wants to proactively assist students in fulfilling their potential, both in and out of the classroom, and ultimately flourishing.
Stay tuned on this article series as we unpack the Positive Education ‘PERMAH’ model that is being utilised at the College. Each article will aim to explain a pillar in the model and provide ideas on how to implement aspects of this pillar at home.

Our aim last year was to raise as much money as possible as COVID has certainly made an impact on Guide Dogs Queensland. You may know that charities have struggled during the past two years and Guide Dogs certainly has had to adjust.
In Semester 2, many students were involved in fundraising for Guide Dogs; Isabella B, Arabella N, Kaija S, Eloise G, Leo H, Grace P, Lexi B, and Yvette M just to name a few. These, and others, were involved with selling merchandise, such as toy pups and dogs, 2022 calendars, pens, coffee mugs and notebooks.
In Term 3 we were very lucky to have Jameson Millers (Guide Dogs puppy raiser and 2015 Old Scholar) and 'Jade' visiting 12J. And in Term 4 we held a merchandise and cupcake stall on the Community Focus Day with Alan (Guide Dogs volunteer) and 'Ayla' (Guide Dog Ambassador) joining us for meet and greets.
On behalf of the Guide Dogs fundraising team, I am very proud to say that we raised $1,153.80 in 2021. Maddie (Guide Dogs puppy raiser) and 'Milo' were very happy to accept the cheque on site on behalf of Guide Dogs Queensland.
Well done to every student involved and thank you everyone for supporting us. Every dollar raised is greatly appreciated and directly impacts the pups on their journey to become Guide Dogs.
Langer Library
Our celebrations for last week’s dual events - Library Lover’s Week and Queensland School Library Week - have concluded. It was lovely to see the students participating and enjoying all the planned activities. The screening of the Merlin episodes, the riddle quiz and the scavenger hunt proved the most popular.
This week, the assignment tasks have started. We have now moved into developing student research skills for these tasks. Promoting our Pathfinders developed for these tasks, we are focusing on our many resources including the use of books, eBooks, databases and internet resources. At the library, we currently have the Year 7s being introduced to the History/Mystery resources, Year 8 classes are involved in both Geography and History tasks, Year 9s in Nanotechnology, Year 10s in Justice Studies and driving laws or in the Science classes looking at Genes, the Year 11s have started Modern History Frontier Wars and the Year 12s are looking into the ethics of sport. A busy time with so many diverse and interesting research topics being investigated.
It was great to see the forthcoming 50th Anniversary of the Langer Library being a focus at the Founders Day celebrations. More on these celebrations is to come – Friday 25 March will be an exciting day for us all.
Academic Matters
From the Academic Hub
Whilst we have not yet been able to celebrate the Scholars’ Assembly, the Academic Hub was buzzing with some of our Old Scholars returning to the College. In a task that proves to be almost as difficult as the assessments themselves, our Scholars carefully selected and placed their names of the Scholars’ Wall. We thank our Scholars, parents, teachers and Mr Kotzur to help us celebrate this wonderful achievement.
The Academic Mentor program kicks off for the year this week. This initiative to provide an extra level of support for the Seniors as they progress through their final year of schooling. Mentors will discuss QCE progress, ATAR eligibility and give a 'guesstimate’ of an ATAR score based on three different estimators. Students discuss their preparedness for the assessments ahead, study plans and looking forward to post-school goals. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this wonderful service.
Special Consideration for missed assessment. If students miss an assessment item due date or exam due to illness or extenuating circumstances, please ensure you fill out a Special Consideration form and submit with supporting documentation to the Academic Hub or via email to r.turnbull@stpeters.qld.edu.au. The forms are available in hard copy from the Academic Hub or on Firefly via both the Junior High and Senior School curriculum pages. In the instance of an assignment, students are to hand in what they have completed on the due date and await further advice, depending on the outcome of the Special Consideration request. Please be reminded that students should not assume that an extension or that an alternative arrangement will be granted.

Primary Years
Primary Years News
Our first Primary Years Parent Support Group Meeting for the year will take place next Tuesday 1 March via video recording. I encourage you to watch this video as it outlines important initiatives and activities in the Primary Years for Term 1. I am excited to be able to continue to share this with you, together with other members of the Primary Leadership Team.
Details regarding the 2022 Parent Representatives were discussed as part of our Primary Parent Information Sessions distributed by video last week. These parent representatives are in integral part of our College Community and are an important contact point for parents in our community who, amongst other things, support home-school relationship by liaising between the teachers and parents of the Form Class (or Year Level) and welcome new families by making themselves known to new parents, helping them transition into the St Peters community. If you are interested in taking on this integral role in the Primary Years, please contact your child’s class teacher or me. Further information regarding Parent Representatives can be found on the Primary Years Parent Information page on Firefly.
I was interested to read the article below from Justin Coulson’s Happy Families website, and while it discusses what is obviously teenage behaviour, I think the underlying understandings and messages are important for all to consider.
It comes from a TED talk by Jim Ferrell.
A family in the 1950’s, after saving for years, buys a new car. Dad is a forestry worker, so they live in the national park, with the home on one side of the road and a canyon on the opposite side. Their teen son is a good kid, responsible and willing to work. He has a date one night and asks dad if he can borrow the new car rather than driving the old 'truck' (ute?) the family owns as their other car. Dad agrees and hands him the keys.
The boy is excited and runs to the car. He’s driven about a minute down the road when he realises there’s no fuel. He returns home, races inside the house, and asks dad for some money so he can fill the tank. Dad is in the bedroom reading the paper. He obliges with some money and the boy dashes back out to the car. Only… the car isn’t there.
The boy dashes down the drive, crosses the road, and looks into the canyon to where smoke is rising from the completely wrecked, brand new car.
How do you tell your dad what just happened?
He walks, forlorn, back into the house, enters the bedroom, and stammers to his dad that the car is gone. His dad continues to read and after a minute he quietly says, "Well, I guess you’ll need to take the truck on your date tonight instead."
The boy quietly leaves the room, picks up the key, and drives down the road until tears force him to pull the car over. He reflects on the lessons he’s learned:
Remember to use the handbrake from now on!
My dad loves me more than he loves the car.
On the worst day of my life my dad didn’t make things worse. He made them better.
This week children are going to metaphorically crash the car into the canyon. They’ll typically do it because they’re excited, or they forgot, or they’re tired, or they’re little and don’t know better, or they’re… you get the picture? And when they crash the car?
Breathe. Move on. And if a conversation is necessary, save it for later when everyone is calm. Then you can talk, together, about lessons learned and better ways to be.
Remember, you can subscribe to the Happy Families website using the link below
The following extracts are taken from an online article from ‘The Classroom’ website entitled ‘What is School Spirit?’ and provides a timely reminder to us all of the importance of fostering School Spirit within St Peters:
“School spirit is in many ways the heart of a school. Pride is a school spirit synonym because it helps foster a sense of belonging among students and staff who are part of the school. It is often a direct reflection of a school’s culture, which can serve as a powerful influence on overall academic performance. A strong sense of school spirit makes staff and students feel more invested in their school, which makes them happier and motivates them to work harder and help each other out. Schools at every level can improve their culture and performance by actively promoting school spirit on their campus.
What Is School Spirit?
When it’s at its strongest, school spirit inspires active participation in school activities and events. While most people associate school spirit with high attendance for pep rallies and athletic events, it also involves joining school clubs and participating in all kinds of extracurricular activities. Uniforms and club shirts serve as a form of spirit wear, meaning that following a dress code helps promote a sense of belonging to the school family. Positive relationships between staff and students foster a strong sense of school spirit.
Significance of School Pride
When people take pride in something, they tend to work harder and feel more invested than they would without that sense of pride. For better or worse, school spirit is contagious. Students and staff who show enthusiasm for being a part of the school are likely to encourage their peers to follow suit, which yields greater participation in school activities and boosts both morale and performance. Since the opposite also holds true, though, students and staff who exhibit disdain or apathy toward their role in the school can have detrimental effects on morale and performance. Schools with a stronger sense of pride and spirit typically outperform their competition in both athletic and academic arenas.
What Does School Spirit Look Like?
School spirit looks like teamwork. It involves events and activities that bring members of the school community together in some way. In addition to its positive impact on morale and performance, school spirit is generally fun. It celebrates successes and creates a sense of togetherness. From colourful posters reflecting schoolwide goals to award ceremonies, special events and team-building activities, school spirit looks like a community of learners and educators working together for the greater good.”
St Peters provides a myriad of opportunities for our students to develop this sense of pride and identity as members of the College community. Attendance at sporting carnivals, musical events, correct wearing of the uniform and House shirts are just some of the many ways our students can feel that they are part of the St Peters community. As COVID restrictions ease we encourage all students to find ways to get involved. This sense of community then translates into a heightened sense of School Spirit and belonging.
OPEN DAY VOLUNTEERS
One of the ways students can show their school spirit is by volunteering at the College’s Open Day on Saturday 12 March. Student Tour Guides and Helpers contribute greatly to the success of the Day. The day runs from 10am – 2pm with some helpers arriving from 9am and staying until approximately 2:30pm to assist with packing up. Students are not required to be in attendance for the entire day - we value their contribution no matter how big or small. A permission slip is available at Junior High Reception for those wishing to be involved and needs to be returned by Monday 7 March.
STUDENT SAFETY AND OUT OF BOUNDS
I’d like to remind Junior High students that there are a number of areas around the school which are out-of-bounds outside of class time. It is impossible to list them all, but a safe rule of thumb is that if a teacher has not directed you to go to a particular area or a duty teacher is not in the near vicinity and can see you – then you probably shouldn’t be there. Out-of-bounds areas for Junior High students are as follows:
All classrooms and buildings – unless under the direct supervision or permission of a staff member.
Performing Arts Building - Students should only be in the PAC if making their way to an activity. They should not be gathering in groups, playing or eating lunch in the foyers or rooms. The Theatrette and Auditorium are strictly out-of-bounds unless supervised. Walkways on the eastern side of the building and loading dock are also out-of-bounds.
Toilets in the PAC are not to be used as change rooms unless specific permission has been given to access the accessible toilet.
Boarding Buildings
Carparks and Roadways
Ovals – unless supervised
P&F building and surrounds
Outdoor space next to Lohe Building
Health Centre surround and road
At St Peters we value the safe community we have and our ability to trust our students to know the difference between right and wrong. Having a safe school is a ‘right’ of everyone in our community, but also comes with the responsibility to operate within the rules and expectations of the College.
New Parent Welcome Function (Friday 18 March)
The New Parent Welcome Function is a perfect opportunity for new parents to St Peters to get to know other new parents as well as to meet various staff of the College and representatives of the P&F and Support Groups. The 2021 families who missed out on the new Parent Welcome mornings during this year are also be invited to attend.
The Function will be held in the Chapel Forecourt from 7pm – 9pm with canapés and drinks provided.
Registrations for catering and COVID purposes are mandatory. Please register at: 2022 NEW PARENTS WELCOME
NB: Registrations for the original event have been cancelled and, therefore, a new registration is required. Registrations close on Friday 4 March.

Senior School News
Wellbeing and Counselling Support
The Senior School Counselling team has undergone a few changes since the end of last year. While Mrs Judy Vidulich is on long service leave until Term 2, we are fortunate to welcome Ms Sharon Pankhurst to the team. Ms Pankhurst is available to meet with students who need support and is located in Senior Reception. Students in Senior School are also able to meet for counselling with Ms Belle James, who is located in Junior High Reception. Appointments with either Counsellor can be arranged directly via email (counselling@stpeters.qld.edu.au), or the relevant Year Level Coordinator can assist a student in making an appointment.
The wellbeing of students remains pivotal to the success of students both in and out of the classroom. During periods of uncertainty, and amid the various challenges of studying during this pandemic, students are encouraged to look after their mental health. For those students and families that are required to quarantine at the moment, please remember to follow recommendations on how to support wellbeing. Ideas from ReachOut.com include:
Avoid lengthy periods on social media
Focus on connecting with an immediate support network
Take time to recover at a natural pace
Find a balance between work, exercise (if you are well enough to engage in these activities) and downtime
Ask for help. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need support.

Bands Extended Weekend Rehearsals
Musicians from Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble and Drumline all attended a weekend of extended rehearsals in lieu of Band Camp. This COVID-Safe event was held across Saturday to Monday and included, rehearsals, sectionals, games and marching practice. Students took this opportunity to work through the vast amount of repertoire planned for the upcoming year of performances.
Music Captains, Oona B and Lachie B, worked with both ensembles to develop team building skills and helped our new students get to know their other band members. A trivia quest and fashion parade also helped make everyone feel part of the team.
Drumline students joined forces with Symphonic Winds for the first Marching Band rehearsal. This was an exciting, yet hot afternoon of marching up and down the Chapel Forecourt. Marching Band are in excellent form already this year with two of their marches already memorised.
It would not be a St Peters Band event without a dress up day. Students whole heartedly took on the challenge to bring 'The Psychedelic 70s' theme to the PAC. For more photos of all the extended weekend rehearsal highlights, please visit the Band’s Facebook page and College Instagram page. https://www.facebook.com/StPetersBands
The weekend would not be possible without the amazing St Peters staff and guests who put in a huge effort to support our emerging, talented musicians. Thank you to Mr Pradella (Woodwind Coordinator), Mr Jacobson (Percussion Coordinator), Mr Aaron Rich (Wind Ensemble Conductor and Woodwind Tutor), Ms Amanda Saffery (Music Administrator), Ms Heather Deacon (Music Assistant) and special guest, Mr Peter Hurwood.
I look forward to sharing our musical gifts and talents at our first performance for the term. 'A Night @ the PAC' on Saturday 26 March in the Dron Auditorium PAC.

Last weekend’s AIC Round 3 fixtures verse St Edmund’s College (and Ambrose Tracey College) truly highlighted how much St Peters Sport has grown over the past few years in terms of skill acquisition, attitude, and resilience. With our First XI Cricketers, Open AFL and First VI Volleyballers overcoming the previous week’s disappointment and loss, they all displayed great grit, determination and skill execution to achieve success in all three sports. To witness the excitement and adulation surrounding these wins truly highlights how hard our boys have worked to overcome adversity and achieve success. WEEKEND WRAP
Last Friday night, 95 of our amazing swimmers attended the swim meet hosted by St Margaret’s/Clayfield College at the Valley pool. Unfortunately the storm arrived, and the meet was abandoned. With less than a week to go before the QGSSSA Swimming Championships, we hope all girls will attend the St Peters invitational meet this Friday afternoon/evening.
Saturday morning history was made with the first bounce of the QGSSSA Inaugural Senior Australian Rules Competition. The morning began with the season launch, with all teams gathered, many Senior Leaders (thank you Mr Kotzur for coming), members of the AFLQ, the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns all in attendance showing great support. Special mention to the QGSSSA Executive Officer, Amy Anderton, for her work behind the scenes putting this competition together. The competition, with 16 teams, 240 girls from QGSSSA schools, will take part in the four-week round-robin competition. It is an honour to be a part of the introduction of this great game and the girls representing St Peters did us proud.
On Saturday our Senior Softball girls ventured to Downey Park for Week 2 of games. The girls played hard, competing with such enthusiasm and spirit and came away with great results, well done to the Open team who won two from two and the Senior A team played hard for a good win also.
Round 10 for our Water Polo girls saw mixed results but our girls certainly competed hard. As we head into the back end of the season with three minor rounds to go, we have teams fighting to earn a place in the finals.
CONGRATULATIONS

A very exciting game for our U12B Team v BGGS coming up with an 8 – 8 draw! The team had a few girls away and they welcomed Labella for her first game of Water Polo! These girls all turned up to defend. Coach Ellie was super impressed with the defensive effort of every player. Special mention to Emma Woods for the ‘Lob shot of the Year!' Sicily M was sensational in defense, she played an awesome quarter in goals as well and was awarded the 'Hitting one straps Award'.

Super Swim Challenge
This month, St Peters swimmers, and our wonderful community, are raising awareness and much needed funds for the Starlight Foundation by participating in the Super Swim Challenge.
Teams, and participants, choose their distance and have 28 days to smash their goals. You can help our swimmers reach their ultimate goal by supporting them through sponsorship or donations here https://superswim.org.au/t/st-peters-swimming Their goal is to raise $10,000 and they have already reached over $2,000!
Well done to Nick N (Year 12), who has spearheaded this initiative, and all of our swimmers! Go Saints!
Mater Chicks in Pink Fun Run
In 2022, St Peters is once again supporting the Mater Chicks in Pink Fun Run to raise money for breast cancer research. As a community we made a huge difference last year, raising over $13,000 which saw us as the Top Fundraising School in the event. The Mater were extremely grateful for the contribution of our community and we would like to make that difference again in 2022.
The Year 12 IBDP CAS students are helping organise our local event. The Fun Run this year takes place on Sunday 6 March. You can participate in the run in a variety of different ways, running the Brisbane City event, coming along to Robertson Park to run as part of the St Peters community (7.30am warm up for a 8am race start) or you can simply find some time that day to do 5km in your local neighbourhood with friends and family.
No matter how you choose to participate in the run, we would love you to help us make a difference by joining the St Peters team and fundraising with us. To join our team please use this link https://fundraise.mater.org.au/join/stpeterslutherancollege or as you register please ‘Join a Team’ and search ‘St Peters Lutheran College’. If you have already signed up for the Brisbane City event but would like to fundraise as part of the St Peters team, please email Susannah Treschman (s.treschman@stpeters.qld.edu.au) and we will get your page brought across to our team.
Thank you in advance for helping us make a difference for a very good cause.
