Wednesday 17 February was the first day of the church season of Lent. The season runs for forty days (Sundays are not counted) and concludes on Holy Saturday. The purpose of the season is for Christians to prepare their hearts and minds for the remembrance of Jesus’ death and resurrection over the Easter weekend. Traditionally, this has involved personal reflection on one’s own sin, the realities of earthly mortality, and on the undeserved gift of eternal salvation received through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Many Christians have also adopted the practice of 'giving up' something for Lent, in honour of Jesus’ 'giving up' his life for our sake on the cross. While we each can give up habits and material things for the season of Lent, it is even better to focus on transformation of character. Take some time to look through the list below. What do you need to 'give up' and 'take up' to more fully live and act in the way of Jesus?
Give up complaining. . . . . . focus on gratitude. Give up pessimism. . . . . . . become an optimist. Give up harsh judgments. . . . think kindly thoughts. Give up worry. . . . . . . . . trust divine providence. Give up discouragement . . . . be full of hope. Give up bitterness . . . . . . turn to forgiveness. Give up hatred . . . . . . . . return good for evil. Give up negativism . . . . . . be positive. Give up anger. . . . . . . . . be more patient. Give up pettiness. . . . . . . become mature. Give up gloom. . . . . . . . . enjoy the beauty that is all around you. Give up jealousy . . . . . . . pray for trust. Give up gossiping. . . . . . . control your tongue. Give up sin. . . . . . . . . . turn to virtue. Give up giving up. . . . . . . hang in there!
A Personal Lenten Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for journeying towards the cross for my sake. Shape me during this season of Lent so that I may better reflect your loving, serving heart in my thoughts, words and actions. Amen.
Blessings, Pastor Greg St Peter's Lutheran Church, Indooroopilly

Using 'How to Solve it Together' in the Early Years.
The restorative practice model is used in the early years to teach an approach to assist students in solving issues, using a gradual release of responsibility. Building positive relationships is ongoing throughout the Prep year. Learning how to interact socially and emotionally with their peers and solving problems is vital for the holistic development of the child. For young children to manage disappointments and challenges, consistent and explicit modelling of strategies is required.
Restorative conversations are excellent at repairing harm and provide opportunities for ‘stakeholders’ to verbalise the problem, address their feelings and plan for positive outcomes, with adult assistance.
By the end of their Prep year, the ‘Solve it Together’ strategy is hoped to become a tool of choice for children facing challenges, either as an individual or in a group. The teaching of problem-solving skills is integral for the children to become independent in using taught strategies to assist them in working through disputes.
You will be able to find further information about restorative practices from a leader in the field by the name of Margaret Thorsborne

JUNIOR HIGH LEADERSHIP TEAM
As a College we aim to foster the personal development of students in a nurturing, vibrant and non-discriminatory environment - where God’s love is lived out with hope and confidence in service to others.
With this in mind the aim for Student Leadership in Junior High is to provide deliberate and planned opportunities where students can discover, explore and develop their leadership skills and potential.
Since the beginning of the term we have been working through the process of selecting our Junior High Leadership team, with applications being formally submitted late in Week 3. Of the 72 applicants, 25 of them were shortlisted for interview. The final selection of Student Leaders was based on ensuring that a broad spectrum of the Junior High student community was represented. This week we formally announced our Junior High Student Representatives for 2021 as follows:
Fin B, Lara B, Sebastian B, Mathilde C, Harrison C, Charlotte C, Jack W, Lauren G, Joshua C, Charlize D, Xavier C, Alice H, James H, Jacob M, Isabelle H, Josh C.
From this representative group, the 2021 Captains and Vice-Captains will be selected and voted for by our Years 7-9 students. The Leaders’ Installation Ceremony will then be held in Week 7 of this term, where the students will be presented with their leadership badges.
CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT
This week has been one in which we celebrated the achievements of our Junior High students in their 2020 academic pursuits. Last Tuesday morning, the efforts of over 230 students were acknowledged when they received either Gold or Silver Academic Awards. Their celebrations were shared with their teachers and families – both in person and through the live-streaming of the event.
In addition to the Gold and Silver Awards received by our students, special acknowledgement must be made of those who topped their respective year-levels through their hard work, dedication and ability. These students were recognised by being named as either the Dux or Proxime Accessit of their Year Level. Congratulations to the following students on their achievement:
Year 7 Dux Amelia R Proxime Accessit Mulan M
Year 8 Dux Alice H Proxime Accessit Oliver R
Year 9 Dux Alexis B, Aastha G, Chloe M
IRONBARK AWARDS
In addition to the Academic Awards, Year 9 students from the 2020 cohort were acknowledged by Mr Matthew Sullivan, Director of Ironbark, for their individual contributions, commitment and enthusiasm while they were at Ironbark. This amazing program has been an integral part of life at St Peters for more than four decades and continues to evolve and to expand and enrich the life-experiences of our Year 9 students.
INFORMATION EVENINGS
Thank you to all the parents who have attended our Junior High Year Level Information Evenings over the past three weeks. The purpose of these evenings has been to provide you with the opportunity to understand the range of support networks we have available at the College as your child progresses through Junior High. Information presented on each evening is available through the Junior High Parent Information page on Firefly. We do recommend that those parents who were unable to attend on the night, access the online information and connect with their child’s Form Class teacher or Year Level Coordinator if there are any queries or concerns.

Band Camp 2021
Band Camp 21 was a marathon long weekend of music, dance, marching, games and fun. Students arrived at QCCC Brookfield on Saturday morning to unpack the nine-tonne truck full of percussion gear and set up the rehearsal spaces. Our army of 120+ musicians made short work of the set up with rehearsals starting an hour earlier than anticipated. Musicians from Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds came together for a series of rehearsals to prepare their repertoire for the coming year. Symphonic Winds was joined by Drumline to begin Marching Band Rehearsals. We were so fortunate to have past St Peters Head of Bands, Mr Grant Mason to spend time as guest conductor with the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and 2021 Drum Major Gabriel V. Drumline were also privileged to participate in a work shop with Drumline specialist, Mr Matt Cocking.
Apart from the great music, ensemble bonding and food also play a huge part in an annual Band Camp. Students dined together on delicious food and snacked on cookies and thanks to Ms Saffery a wide variety of sweet treats. After a huge day of music making, students came together to bond and create new friendships through activities including swimming, beach volleyball, a games and trivia night and a movie night. Thank you to all Year 12 students for all their hard work preparing Sunday’s devotion and the games and trivia night. They all worked very hard to create a fun and happy environment that was inclusive and encouraging to all.
It would not be a St Peters Band Camp without a Dress Up Day. Students whole heartedly took on the challenge to bring 'The Beach' theme to the bush backdrop at Brookfield QCCC. For more photos of all Band Camp highlights, please visit the Band’s Facebook page and College Instagram page. https://www.facebook.com/StPetersBands
A big thank you to Head of College Mr Tim Kotzur and Deputy Head of College Mrs Lisa Delaney for coming along and joining in on the rehearsals. We were so proud to share our musical gifts with you and show you how far we had improved in such a short time.
A St Peters Band Camp could not be possible without the amazing St Peters staff and guests who put in a huge effort to support our emerging, talented musicians. Thank you to Mr Pradella (Woodwind Coordinator), Mr Jacobson (Percussion Coordinator), Mr Aaron Rich (Wind Ensemble Conductor and Woodwind Tutor), Mrs Christine Taylor (Co-Director of Co-Curricular Music) Ms Amanda Saffery (Music Administrator), Ms Alison Milner (Music/English Staff and Woodwind/Band Mentor), Ms Karen Greenwood (Music Assistant) and special guests Ms Krist-elle Hill, Mr Grant Mason and Mr Matt Cocking. I would also like to thank all other St Peters Staff who attended to support rehearsals, study sessions, pool supervision and camp activities, Ms Claire Saffery, Ms Renee Szymanski, Mr Mike Cujes and Mr Peter Hurwood.
I look forward to sharing our musical gifts and talents at our first performance for the term. 'A Night @ the PAC' on Saturday 27 March in the Dron Auditorium PAC.

Boys Sport
Luke Donatini Boys Sport Coordinator 3377 6234 l.donatini@stpeters.qld.edu.au
What a fantastic and successful day of St Peters Boys Sport we just experienced. It was wonderful to get out and about last Friday and Saturday to spectate and encourage our students whilst representing St Peters at various AIC sports. It’s always great to witness the positive energy, enthusiasm and effort exhibited by our boys when representing their College. What was also noticeable was the following traits which were ever present both on and off the playing field - Respect, Resilience, Tenacity, Passionate and being Humble.
For me, these elements I find important in all our students both on and off the sporting field. As mentioned on previous occasions, the concept of ‘Our Crest, Our College’ is paramount in the building of our St Peters sporting culture and spirit. Engraining an attitude of pride, confidence and commitment to what the St Peters Crest represents, so we are all striving for ‘Plus Ultra’.
Last Saturday was made even more special with the hosting of ‘St Peters Pink Stumps Day’ in support of the McGrath Foundation. It was brilliant to witness our College community come together to embrace and overwhelmingly support this worthy cause. I would like to thank Mr Gary Munday (St Peters Cricket Coordinator) for initiating our inaugural ‘St Peters Pink Stumps Day’ and putting it all together in his first four weeks in the role of St Peters Cricket Coordinator. It is definitely something we will be looking forward to hosting for many years to follow. Should you wish to support this great cause and make a donation, please click on the below link: https://www.pinkstumpsday.com.au/fundraisers/stpeterslutherancollege/
This Week in Sport
With regards to our AIC ‘in term’ sports, we now move towards Round 5 this weekend. St Peters will compete against St Patrick’s College in Opens AFL (Friday afternoon), and then in Cricket and Volleyball on Saturday. Our senior teams, Year 7 to 9, will be competing home at St Peters and our senior teams, Year 10 to 12, away at St Patrick’s College venues.
Please ensure you check the St Peters App. for both venue details and time of games.
AIC Swimming Championships – Friday 26 February
This Friday our St Peters Swimmers will line up to defend their AIC Agregate Winners title in the pool at the State Aquatic Centre, Chandler. For the past four years our boys have won this prestigious event and in 2021 they are even more keen and up for the challenge as they strive for five consecutive wins. We are extremely proud of how hard our swimmers have worked, and we are now looking forward to watching them compete on Friday.
The AIC Swimming Championships will be Live Streamed on Friday from 8.30am to approximately 1.00pm. Please see below for the Live Stream Link: AIC Swimming Championships 2021
2021 AIC Swimming Championships – No Student Spectators
The AIC Management Committee released a statement surrounding spectators at the up and coming AIC Championships on Friday 26 February. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to apply and attend as spectators; however, it will be a ticketed event and only entry given to those who have applied for a ticket (allocated seating). There will no student spectators at this year’s AIC Swimming Championships. For further information on how to apply for spectator tickets, please check the St Peters App where you can also read the full AIC Statement regarding this event.
2020 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7 to 12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 Sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one (1) Cross Country session or Runners Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 Sports.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSSA. Let’s work hard in 2021 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App. Boys can also find more details about Cross Country from the weekly sport email sent to them.
