“My cup overflows” Psalm 23:5
Are you a glass half-full or a glass half-empty person? The glass half-full focuses on what we have, which is surely better than focusing on what we don't have, right?
Positivity is good, but can only go so far. When faced with real trouble and strife that produces real suffering, a positive attitude can become a sign of denial. Don't worry, be happy doesn't cut the mustard. Trying to discern a purpose to our days of disaster can be ridiculous and even obscene.
The Season of Lent reminds us of how God deals with our dark days. It begins with Ash Wednesday, which reminds us that sometimes our lives will be reduced to ashes. Ultimately, we will die.
Sometimes our sin wreaks devastating consequences on others and ourselves. Lying, deception and meanness hurt others and destroy relationships. Even if no one notices and we think there are no significant consequences for our sins, that in itself is a consequence, because our moral compass has just shifted a bit further away from its true north.
But sometimes we are left powerless in the face of evil and suffering. Last week we passed the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine war. The earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye remind us sometimes the brokenness of the world is beyond our ability to resist it. In the face of these tragic events, we can only lament and cry out to God for mercy. Lament is a legitimate response to suffering, and far better than pretending life is all good.
The cross of Jesus is the immovable testimony to the depth of God's love for his suffering Creation. Amid the wreckage and rubble of our lives God comes to us to dwell with us. Jesus shares our humanity, shares in our suffering, dies for our sin, and renews the brokenness of our world.
Ashes remind us not to trust our own ability to fix our lives and the world, but to trust Jesus and his dying and rising as God's solution to our problems. When we lament and despair of our own resources to deal with our suffering, we are ready to be filled up by God’s love. Only God can bring life out of death. Only Jesus can save us. In Jesus God pours out his love and our cup overflows.
The Bishop of the LCA, and St Peters Old Scholar, Rev Paul Smith, said recently he is neither a glass half-empty nor a glass half-full person. He is a glass overflowing person. Our God is so full of love, kindness, compassion, generosity, patience, and goodness, that our cup overflows. From forgiveness of sins to the abundance of life now, and the promise of life in God's presence forever, we have been blessed beyond measure.
In the Season of Lent, may the love of God in Jesus remind you that out of the ashes of our lives God brings the overflowing abundance of life, which is more than we could ever dare hope for.
Blessings

As part of the Queensland School Library Week’s celebrations (Week 4), our Years 7 to 12 students had the opportunity to enter a 'Six-Word Story Competition' organised by the Langer Library: a story, memoir, poem or joke, told in only six words.
The conditional prompts, based on the acronym R-E-A-D, stipulated that their answer should include: a character’s name starting with the letter R, a setting containing the letter E, at least one adverb or an adjective, and the letter D anywhere within the story’s words. A short deadline was proclaimed and more than 40 entries were recorded.
The Student Book Club’s members: Ava R, Cat L, Daisy L, Eloise M, Floria S, Freya M, Giselle C, Holly H, Isabella N, Max H, Maxine S and Sophie B met last Thursday at lunchtime to act as a Jury and to determine the winner(s) of the competition.
After a scientifically organised chaotic process, invigorated with chocolates and sour worms, the selection went on by making sure that all the entry criteria were respected for each submission and priority was given to the values of positivity, fun and surprise in a final evaluation step.
We are delighted to announce that the entry: 'Roger loved dancing extravagantly in Ethiopia' (by authoring duo: Alice B and Tilly P) has been chosen in an ultimate consensus. Congratulations to all participants to this year’s introductory competition. We are looking forward to raising the bar for next year’s edition with more elaborated prompts, shorter deadlines and returning, more experienced writers.
Shout out to our Jury’s members for spontaneously accepting the challenge, and for their dedication and enthusiasm!
The Students Book Club is open to all year level students and meeting every Thursday A at lunchtime in the Langer Library. All welcome!
Other festivities marking Queensland School Library Week (#QSLW) and Library Lovers’ Day included lunchtime activities such as: 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' (movie & popcorns/ice blocks), 'Match the quote to the author' (competed in groups of 3-4 students), 'Who am I' Quiz, diverse charade games, as well as a quiet space for a 'Speed Date with a Book'.
Our QSLW lunchtimes sessions were extremely popular during both weeks, showcasing the important and positive work of school libraries. What a vibrant success!

This week, St Peters Senior Engineering classes were visited by three engineering representatives from the University of Qld (UQ) Women in Engineering (WE) program. University-led and industry supported, UQWE inspires young women to consider a rewarding career in engineering. Through hands-on activities and workshops, interactive presentations, digital resources, and fun events, WE educate female high school students, teachers and parents about engineering and provide support and industry connections for current students at UQ.
The students spoke about the many diverse opportunities that a career in engineering can lead students. They can shape the digital future with software engineering, solve big data challenges with computing and data science, or apply their skills in developing affordable and sustainable solutions through humanitarian engineering. They spoke about how engineering embraces the challenges of a changing world in a way that benefits careers, industry, and communities all over the world.

Last Friday, the Year 11 Study of Religion students attended the SoR Sacred Texts incursion, with guest speaker Dr Adam Bowles. Dr Bowles is the convenor of Studies in Religion at the University of Queensland and an expert in Sanskrit texts. The students had crafted questions regarding the development and contemporary use of Hindu and Buddhist sacred texts, and were taken on a deep dive into the world of these fascinating documents. It was a great opportunity to learn about their history from their development 3,500 years ago through to their use (or misuse) in contemporary media today (we’re looking at you, Buffy the Vampire Slayer!).
Earlier this week, 16 students from the Primary Years travelled to Forest Lake for the Brisbane West Chess Tournament. A day of some wins, some losses but lots of learning saw the St Peters students successful in several divisions. Congratulations to Iris W, Thoma B, Yuto Y and Leo L who finished the day in second place for Division A and Bowie M, Giles H, Aaron G and Leon Y as they were placed third in Division B. Special congratulations to Leon Y who was also placed third individually in Division B. Several our Chess players were also successful in winning Merit ribbons for their performance on the day.
Special thanks to Mr Brock Smith who worked with these students in ensuring the day was such a success. I am sure that all involved are looking forward to the next tournament in Term 2.
This week the Primary Years farewells long-standing Kiss and Go Supervisor, Mr Mike Bishop. Most families in who have experienced drop off and pick up in Lower Primary will be aware of the fine work that Mike does with our students and their families, particularly in keeping our Kiss and Go safe and efficient.
We wish Mike all the very best as he moves into retirement and thank him for his tireless service to St Peters and our community. I am confident we will continue to see Mike around the campus as he supports his three daughters, two who are current students at the College.

Head of Primary Years
As a College we aim to foster the personal development of students in a nurturing, vibrant and non-discriminatory environment - where God’s love is lived out with hope and confidence in service to others.
With this in mind the aim for Student Leadership in Junior High is to provide deliberate and planned opportunities where students can discover, explore and develop their leadership skills and potential.
Since the beginning of the year, we have been working through the process of selecting our Junior High Leadership team. Of the 56 applicants, 25 of them were shortlisted for interview. The final selection of Student Leaders was based on ensuring that a broad spectrum of the Junior High student community was represented. This week we formally announced our Junior High Student Leadership team for 2023 as follows:
Captains: Veniz P & Jonny S
Vice-Captains: Summer P & Ollie D
Representatives: Leila A, Keer F, Grace F, Mia M, Emily R, Ava R, Kate W, Alex D, Toby F, Oliver H, Oliver H, Samuel M
The Leaders’ Installation Ceremony will then be held in Week 7 of this term, where the students will be presented with their leadership badges.
Applications are now being called for those Year 9 students who are interested in being considered as a House Leader for 2023. The Application Form and Role Description was emailed to all Year 9s last Friday. All interested candidates should print the form, fill in the information by hand and submit their completed application to Junior High Reception. The deadline for applications is tomorrow 10:00am, Friday 3 March. The applications will then be collated and provided to the respective House Patrons who will shortlist the candidates and conduct interviews in Week 7.
If your child has been injured in a way that will impact their ability to safely move around campus e.g. crutches, moon boot, please contact the Year Level Coordinator as soon as possible so that support options can be discussed and organised.
Patricia Aishford
Head of Junior High
Students are mastering their techniques and learning about colour and glaze. We look forward to the completed forms!
If you would like to join this workshop next term on Mondays, registration is now open on the access Arts page.

Congratulations to all involved in the Pink Stumps Day last Saturday. It was fantastic to see the College painted in pink in support of breast cancer and the Glenn McGrath Foundation. Well done to the Cricket Support Group, Cricket Coordinator Mr Gary Munday, Coaches, Parents and players on your fantastic support of this event.
This Saturday 4 March will be our ORANGE day for Volleyball against Iona. This is a special day for our Volleyball community where we show support and raise awareness about blood cancer. The St Peters Volleyball teams are painting their home court in ORANGE for their games against Iona College.
All proceeds from the BBQ and bake sale will go to the Leukaemia Foundation to send a powerful message of hope and direct support to those facing blood cancer today. ORANGE is the colour of awareness for Leukaemia.
Students are able to show their support by wearing a ‘Touch of ORANGE’. Sports House will be providing any student who wishes to attend and support this wonderful day orange ribbon to wear and face paint to put on. Students must still be in formal uniform (no mix and match).Y

The final AIC Swim trial will take place this Friday afternoon at the 50m Pool. This is a compulsory session for all members of the Swim Team. The team will be finalised at the conclusion of the meet so boys pushing for places on the team need to be in attendance. The meet will run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. We look forward to seeing all boys there!
We wish the 2023 AIC Boys Swim team all the best for next Tuesday 7 March as they strive for seven in a row. The boys have had a good season and are excited to see what they can achieve. Best of luck to all boys! GO SAINTS!
An email has been sent to all Years 7 to 12 students inviting them to sign up to attend the AIC Championships as spectators on Tuesday 7 March. It is very important that ALL students who are considering attending this event as a spectator understands that it is an academic school day which they will be missing, and that parental permission and agreement is important.
All students who intend on attending this event must also ensure that all due assessment is completed and submitted. This is NOT a compulsory attendance event and students must be mindful that their academics do take priority. A sign on form has been sent out and will close on Friday 3 March at 3:30pm.
I would also like to highlight this week the importance of the St Peters Cross Country program. Not only are we wanting boys to compete competitively for St Peters in Cross Country but we are wanting all Years 7-12 boys who will be playing in Term 2 Sports (Rugby & Football) to strongly consider attending at least one (1) Cross Country session or Run Club so to enhance their overall fitness level as they start to prepare for Term 2 Sports.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSSA. Let’s work hard in 2023 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.
A reminder that all our boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and games.
