We’d love for you to join us!
Jesus said; If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
Mark 8:34
Do you consider yourself to be a follower or a leader? Followers are often defined by their behaviour, they are seen as doing what others want them to do. A follower is epitomised by the saying that many of our parents might have said to us; “If so and so jumped off a cliff would you follow?” Following in this context is interpreted in terms of behaviour and is viewed negatively.
Whereas a leader is usually presented as being willing to step up and take control of a project or task. They are seen as proactive, taking the lead, especially with a group of people. Being a leader is often presented as a positive trait to aspire to. It is certainly what we encourage students to view themselves as here at St Peters, leaders who have the potential to influence others.
But what’s curious in this text from Mark’s gospel is that Jesus is asking us not to be leaders, but to be followers. If anyone wants to come after me, Jesus says, deny yourself pick up your cross and follow me. Jesus is calling us to be followers, not leaders. But how is he defining this following?
For Jesus, we follow not by jumping off a cliff with him but by denying ourselves and picking up or taking up our crosses. Notice, this is not the cross Jesus had to carry before he died on it. No, Jesus says we each have a cross to carry and bear. What is the cross that you have to carry at this moment in your life? Is it pain, exhaustion, illness, grief, or any of the other ‘little deaths’ we all have to encounter throughout our earthly journeys?
Martin Luther picked up on this point from Jesus and other passages in the bible to develop what he called a ‘theology of the cross’. That the cross happens to the Christian every day as they live their lives as disciples who willingly bear their sufferings. The follower of Jesus surrenders to the crosses that they bear because through the lens of the cross, they see God present and active in their brokenness. They have a different relationship to suffering as they see God showing his heart for us in Jesus' hanging on the cross. With the blessing of perspective and time, we can see our suffering in a different light.
We share in Jesus' death and resurrection to be cruciform people. People who are shaped and formed by our cross experiences in this life. And by travelling through the cross God’s Holy Spirit uses our suffering to show us that we are not alone or powerless. We have strength through faith and trust in him who died for us.
Blessings and comfort as you bear your crosses.

19 year old Millie loves art, music and dancing, she also experiences regular seizures. As Millie's seizures are not able to be controlled by medication, her epilepsy, that she was born with, has had a profound impact on her life. Millie's loving family have always been there, providing the support she needs.
Millie and her family invite you to join them for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon Sunday 24 March, raising funds for Epilepsy Queensland.
Funds raised will support Queenslanders like Millie living with epilepsy.
It is no coincidence that 26 March is also World Purple Day, International Day of Epilepsy awareness when the world turns purple in support of the 65 million people living with epilepsy.
Make March Purple is an Australia-wide campaign supported by epilepsy organisations across the country and the national peak body – Epilepsy Australia
Every 33 minutes a life is turned upside-down by an epilepsy diagnosis. Help turn things around with a great afternoon out at Bowling for Millie to raise funds and awareness for Queenslanders affected by epilepsy.
It is encouraging to see so many students improve their Grade Point Averages and receive acknowledgement of this improvement at ceremonies and assemblies. Congratulations to these students and all who have received awards over the past few weeks. We look forward to seeing many more students be awarded on their improvements in Semester 2 ceremonies.

Fifty years of research tells us that parent engagement in children’s learning makes a difference. When parents engage with their children’s learning, particularly out of school, attendance increases, behaviour in school improves, homework return rates go up and, overall, children’s achievement tends to improve (J. Goodall (2018)).
Children achieve more in school when their families engage in activities such as reading, asking thoughtful questions, and providing the structure children need to complete assignments (Centre for Family Engagement and Global Family Research Project (2018)).
Parent and family engagement in learning is based on an understanding that while children learn in all kinds of different environments, at the centre of these interrelated systems is the dynamic between parents and children. Child-parent interactions that nurture positive attitudes towards learning, confidence as learners, and the development of subjective learning resources, equip children to succeed.
Given that parent and family engagement is one of the most powerful predictors of children’s development and educational attainment, it makes sense for schools and parents to work in tandem to improve educational achievement and reduce equity gaps. Equal partnerships between educators, students and parents provide the greatest opportunities to scaffold learning, especially among those most at risk of underachievement.
When parents are actively involved, students often experience higher motivation, and enhanced social skills. It's a shared responsibility that nurtures a child's holistic development.
As we ushered in the 2024 Lunar New Year, the Year of the Dragon, our Primary Years students were treated to an unforgettable cultural extravaganza. This year, symbolising strength, courage and good fortune, set the perfect backdrop for our festivities. The event was made possible by the incredible support and sponsorship of our parents and Griffith University, the invaluable contributions of community language schools, and the dedicated involvement of our Year 10 and Year 12 IB students.
The festivities commenced with a breathtaking Lion Dance that captured the imagination of students from Prep to Year 6. This was followed by a dynamic Kungfu performance, showcasing a variety of martial arts forms, including broadsword, rapier, fist position, and cudgel, which left our students in awe and admiration.
The celebration continued as our Prep to Year 3 students delved into an array of cultural immersion activities. From crafting dragon art to mastering Chinese painting, competing in chopsticks and marbles games, exploring stone rubbing, practicing Five Animals Taichi, perfecting Chinese calligraphy, kicking shuttlecocks, and spinning diabolos, each activity was a step into the heart of Chinese tradition.
The laughter, excitement, and joy that filled the air were a clear indication of the fun and learning that took place. This celebration was more than just a festive gathering; it was a meaningful journey into the heart of Chinese culture and tradition. By immersing our students in these rich cultural experiences, we aim to instil in them a deep appreciation for diversity and a strong sense of global citizenship. As they carry the lessons and memories from this event into their futures, we hope they will continue to embrace and celebrate the many cultures that make our world so wonderfully diverse.

All our Parent Representative for 2024 have now been informed and contact details for these generous volunteers can be found in class blogs this Friday.
During this term, all students in Junior High have undertaken the online VIA Character Strength Survey to identify their signature character strengths. Although most Year 8 and 9 students also responded to the VIA survey last year, we encourage them to do the survey annually. Life experiences, responses to challenges and developing maturity can invariably modify students’ personalities over a relatively short period time – and the Character Strength survey enables them to track these changes – and their strengths - from one year to the next.
The Academic Care and Wellbeing Program in Junior High bases a number of classroom activities during the year on exploring and understanding the Character Strengths. We also focus on these strengths in our Junior High and Year Level Assemblies each week. For the next two weeks, coinciding with our formal Year 9 Leadership process and appointments, our focus Character Strength is Leadership, with the key messages encouraging students to step up and be positive role models for others.
As a College, we aim to foster the personal development of students in a nurturing, vibrant and non-discriminatory environment - where God’s love is lived out with hope and confidence in service to others.
With this in mind, the aim for Student Leadership in Junior High is to provide deliberate and planned opportunities where students can discover, explore and develop their leadership skills and potential.
Since the beginning of the year, we have been working through the process of selecting our Junior High Leadership team. Of the 57 Year 9 applicants, 26 were shortlisted for interview. The final selection of Student Leaders was based on ensuring that a broad spectrum of the Junior High student community was represented. This week we formally announce that our Junior High Student Leadership team for 2024 is as follows:
Captains: Emily R and Manu A
Vice-Captains: Deanne F and Michael L
Representatives: Cameron B, Emma C, Alexis C, Lily D, Caitlin L, Joshua L, Ella M, Nathan M, Emily M, Miranda S, Aishani V, James W.
The Leaders’ Installation Ceremony will be held in Week 7 of this term, where the students will be presented with their leadership badges. Parents of our Year 9 Student Leaders have been invited to attend the Installation Ceremony.
Applications are now being called for those Year 9 students who are interested in being considered as a House Leader for 2024. The Application Form and Role Description was emailed to all Year 9s earlier this week. All interested candidates should print the form, fill in the information by hand and submit their completed application to Junior High Reception. The deadline for applications is Friday 1 March. The applications will then be collated and provided to the respective House Patrons who will shortlist the candidates and conduct interviews in Week 7/8.
In recent weeks, all members of our Junior High Academic Care and Wellbeing Team (Head, Deputy Head and Year Level Coordinators) have, unfortunately, had cause to counsel a number of students about the poor choices they have made when using online Chat groups (such as WhatsApp) and other social media sites. A concerning number of reported interactions have been negative, with inappropriate or unkind comments having been made to or about others. This type of behaviour contravenes our College’s Code of Conduct, our expectation that all students will show Care, Dignity and Respect to each other at all times, and breaches their Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement.
The expectations of students regarding their Technology Use in Junior High are clearly outlined in the Student Diary (pp. 25A-31A). These pages also provide information and advice to students regarding various eSafety matters.
I would strongly encourage all parents to have an open and honest conversation with their child/ren in relation to their online behaviour. Do you know what chat groups they are part of? Can they explain what the purpose or nature of these groups actually is? Does any bullying or harassment of other students occur within the groups? Do they know what they should do if it does occur?
If these conversations raise any concerns for you as a parent, please do not hesitate to contact us for support or advice.

Dear Year 10 Parents
Over the next week or so, your student will or will have received an envelope containing an invitation to receive vaccinations sponsored by the Queensland Government and recommended by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council.
Please follow the directions in the package carefully and return the completed forms to the St Peters Senior School Reception. All forms are to be returned with your nominated response. The St Peters Lutheran College will collect the forms and then forward them via courier to the vaccination providers.
OZCARE (Ph 07 34512060) or SIP.Brisbane@ozcare.org.au are the vaccination providers on behalf of the Queensland Government and will collate the forms, administer the vaccines and record their administration on the future vaccination days held here at the College. The proposed vaccination days this year for Year 10 students are Tuesday 20 August and Tuesday 29 October commencing at 8:30am.
Please contact OZCARE if you have any questions regarding any of the provided paperwork or relating to the vaccines on offer. Spare envelopes and paperwork can be obtained via the St Peters Senior School Reception. Please contact the St Peters Senior School reception if your Year 10 student has not received an envelope by Friday 8 March.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.”
With a weekend packed full of fantastic sporting results, I was spoilt with choice to write about this week. I pondered whether to highlight our Pink Stumps Day recognising the importance of contributing to something that goes beyond sport, our diligent Volleyball team who had to relocate fixtures to Marist College at the last minute and showed incredible poise and leadership when I was in the midst of cheering the Australian Rules team on or for supporters who came out in droves to support their friends, the sport or just the school.
Instead, one conversation caught my attention between a coach and a player before they took the field. The coaches message was simple: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.” The importance of mindset was not lost on me or the young man who took stock of these wise words and considered the impact of his thoughts and how they can manifest into positive sporting, but lifelong outcomes. This resonated with my message from last week as I challenged the students to be brave and believe in themselves and that they did. The motto of ‘Plus Ultra’ rung true on each of the sporting fields and will continue into this weekend and life.
Bravo to the young men who dared to dream this weekend and accomplished some incredible results. Our Australian Rules Open team recorded a 67-10 victory, First XI cricket winning by 17 runs, bowling all 10 batsmen out in a 50 run period and our First VI coming back from a difficult start to close out a close game and show extreme composure.
With all AIC First and Open teams still in the hunt for a premiership, and all Australian Rules teams all being undefeated it is an exciting time to be involved in Boys Sport
Furthermore, the weekend was a spectacular showcase of school spirit with Australian Rules, Cricket and Volleyball Open and First teams being supported by hundreds of students. From Coorparoo to Cricket the Saints brought the noise and gave them the extra boost to get the boys over the line with a convincing win over Marist in Australian Rules, coming back from 1-0 down in volleyball and for defeating Marist in Cricket for the first time in AIC Cricket history!
Last weekend St Peters celebrated the success of its fourth Pink Stumps day, raising over $9000.00 in collaboration with Marist College to support the McGrath Foundation and provide fundraising towards the essential work of breast cancer nurses. I would like to thank Mr Gary Munday for his coordination of the Pink Stumps Day, providing a platform for our boys to showcase their talents against a spirited Marist side.
An incredible achievement, complimenting a terrific day. To the Parent Support Group for adorning the P&F Centre, with vibrant pink decorations to compliment the incredible spread of food and drinks, the day served as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and support. Lastly to Ms Sarah Delaney, Director of Life-Wide Learning who shared how breast cancer touches us all and the significant role young men play in shaping our society, emphasising the power of unity and empathy in driving positive change. St Peters looks forward to continuing efforts in making a positive impact in the fight against breast cancer. If you would like to still donate, please click here!
The final AIC Swim trial will take place this Friday afternoon at the 50m pool. This is a compulsory session for all members of the Swim Team. We look forward to seeing all boys there!
We wish the 2024 AIC Boys Swim team all the best for next Tuesday 5 March as they strive for eight in a row. The boys have put in countless hours, and we are excited to see what they can achieve. Best of luck to all boys! GO SAINTS|
