Congratulations to both our Boys and Girls Swimming Teams on their Championship successes in recent days. Last Friday, in a very tight and keenly contested carnival, our Boys made it five AIC titles in a row; while, yesterday, our Girls completed a record eighth successive QGSSSA Championship. As a community we are very proud of our swimmers, not only for their success, but also for the way that they conducted themselves in and out of the water.
Our swimmers, like so many other students at the College put a huge amount of effort into both their academic studies and their cocurricular activities. Sport and other Cocurricular programs such as Music, together with our Service Learning Programs and Outdoor Education experiences, form an important part of the life-wide learning opportunities offered here at St Peters. Our students are encouraged to engage in these life-wide learning opportunities as part of a rich holistic education that St Peters seeks to provide in order to challenge and nurture the spiritual, academic, physical, emotional and social character of each student.
Engagement in life-wide learning opportunities provides our students with experiences to build self-esteem and confidence; learn about commitment, persistence and teamwork; enjoy a healthy approach to life; enhance skills; be creative, imaginative and develop a sense of the aesthetic; assume leadership roles; respond to challenges; be self-disciplined and develop a sense of service and responsibility towards others.
At St Peters we take the development of the whole child seriously - as the tagline to the Life-wide Learning Strategic Pillar in our new Strategic Intent Plus Ultra 2025 suggests – ‘The whole child, the whole point’.

Easter
This week was the funeral of former St Peters teacher and lately Australian Lutheran World Service support worker Christian Stern in Hervey Bay. I wasn’t able to attend in person but could participate in the live-stream. It was sad, as Christian was still a young man leaving a young family behind, but it was also a powerful witness to the faith that inspired his life and led him to serve in various ways around him – and make an impact on the world.
I was reminded that we live our lives under the shadow of its finiteness, and in the end it doesn’t matter how much we have accumulated or how many experiences we have consumed, but how we have lived, how we have related to others, how we have cared for others…
The funeral service and its songs and readings – which Christian helped prepare during the last months of his life - pointed to Christ and the Easter hope we have through his death and resurrection. A hope that points us beyond the finiteness of our earthly lives to the infinite magnitude of God’s love and the eternal future in His presence that Easter has brought.
As we move through this time of Lent, 40 solemn days of preparation for Easter, we are led on the journey to the cross, to death and then beyond into resurrection. We live our lives in the shadow of death – but through Christ that is not the final word anymore. This hope empowered Christian’s life and gives us a hope that can carry us through the dark times, through sadness, through loss. Peter writes this in his first letter:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. (1 Peter 1:3-4)
May this living hope fill and inspire you, too.

It is wonderful to see all the wonderful work students do at the College to help others.
We recently collected school shoes and stationary to be sent to disadvantaged communities in Papua New Guinea - this is a message from Project Yumi...
"On behalf of the Project Yumi team we would like to say thank you to both the Senior and Junior grades of St Peter's for participating in our Pass it on Project Initiative. On Saturday 6 February, 43 volunteers gathered together to sort, sanitise and pack all the shoes and stationery that was donated. Because of the generosity of all participating students, we have revamped 380 pairs of school shoes and packed 600 student stationery sets to send over to students in rural areas of Papua New Guinea.
"Again thank you to all students who contributed, these donations will certainly make a difference to the lives of many!"

Maggie Dent presents: Communicating with teenage boys
Maggie Dent presents: Communicating with teenage boys Wednesday 24 March, 2021 8:00pm - 9:00pm AEDT
Adolescence has a way of transforming children’s brains that can make communication challenging, especially with teenage boys who often start articulating in monosyllabic grunts. These brain changes also make them more sensitive, volatile and critical of themselves, making the tween/teen years a high-risk window. In this webinar, Maggie Dent shows how using compassionate, empowering communication with teenage boys can better guide them across the bridge to healthy manhood to a place where they feel worthwhile and engaged in respectful relationships.
St Peters Lutheran College has a membership with Parenting Ideas, one of Australia’s most trusted sources of parenting education and support. As part of this membership, all the parents in this school community can attend this webinar at no cost.

HARMONY DAY Friday 19 March
Schools across Australia will ‘stand together’ in the coming weeks as two significant awareness days come to our attention. Friday 19 March is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and is known across Australia and the upper year levels of St Peters as “Bullying. No way!” Day. Harmony Day, another event on the same date, is an important celebration that focuses on Australia’s diversity. We acknowledge the importance of creating a school environment that is safe and supportive, where diversity is valued, and where all members of the school community feel respected and included. Therefore, the key messages taken from each of these awareness days, ‘Everyone Belongs’ and ‘Respect Others’, will be the focus of our wellbeing lessons across the Primary Years. In the Primary Years, we refer to this event as Harmony Day, as it reflects the language, positive and restorative approach taken with young children.
Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. Belonging is what makes us want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. So what does belonging mean to us, to our family, to our friends and to our school community? Children in the Primary Years will have the opportunity to think about these questions during the week. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.
As part of our Harmony Day celebrations, we will conclude the week with an assembly on Friday 19 March to acknowledge the positive work of the students. This assembly will be held in the Dron Auditorium. Currently parents are welcome to assemblies on an invite only basis, and as a result, you may be contacted if your child will receive an award at this assembly. More details of a live stream or pre-recording will be available closer to the date. At this assembly we will highlight activities from throughout the week along with an ensembles concert and our first round of Head, Hearts and Hands Ambassadorship Awards.
To show our unity in support of the message that ‘everyone belongs’ students are encouraged to wear orange t-shirts to school on Friday 19 March to support this initiative. As per our usual routine with coloured shirt days, please ensure that the shirt adheres to sun smart guidelines and has no or minimal print appearing on the shirt. Regular school uniform requirements stand for all items other than the orange shirt (i.e. shorts, shoes and so on). This event is awareness raising, rather than fundraising, therefore no gold coin donations are called for.
We look forward to reflecting on the valuable messages garnered from celebrating Harmony Day with our Primary Years students in the coming weeks.
LOWER PRIMARY LIBRARY UPDATE
New additions to the furniture and a reorganisation of the existing space has given the Lower Primary Library a facelift. The students have loved the changes and are engaging in the library at lunchtimes as well as throughout their lesson times.
POSITIVE PARENTING by Michael Grose
Building deep emotional connections with kids Imagine your child comes to you upset that a sibling or friend has cheated in a game. There are a number of ways to respond, including telling them not to worry (“Let it go!”), advising them how to handle it (“Next time you keep the score.”) or empathising emotionally (“You must feel disappointed.”)
Each is a legitimate response for a parent and teacher to make, but only the latter builds a deep emotional connection. Importantly, the empathetic response builds a child’s or young person’s emotional intelligence as it taps into their ability to recognise current feelings.
How emotional connection works
Kids crave to be understood by others, especially by the people they love or respect. When you accurately feed back how a child or young person is feeling you demonstrate that you really care. Strong relationships are formed on the bedrock of care, kindness and compassion.
How to give emotional feedback that connects
Giving accurate emotional feedback to an upset child or teenager takes practice. It requires that you pay attention, move into the present moment, listen to a child and identify the feeling behind their words. High or loud emotions such as anger, annoyance and panic are often easier to identify than low or muted emotions such as worry, discouragement or loneliness.
An effective way to connect on emotional level is to listen to what a child has to say, and then think back to a time you were in a similar situation. Imagine if a child says they feel horrible because their friends laughed at them when they made mistake in class. Rather than respond immediately, think back to a time when you made a mistake in front of others and identify how you felt. Embarrassed, ashamed, or annoyed? “I bet that you felt embarrassed and annoyed when your friends laughed at you.” Your child may tell you that you’re off the mark, but they’ll more than likely appreciate the empathy you show.
Feed back the positive emotions too
You don’t have to wait until something challenging happens to connect with a child on an emotional level. Accurately mirror positive feelings such as relief (after a stressful situation has passed), enthusiasm (as they begin something they love doing) and chilled (as they put their feet up at the end of the day). We all experience many emotions throughout the day. The ability to accurately recognise and feed back the emotions of children and young people is a wonderful way to build connections of quality and depth.

COMMUNICATION DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
If you haven’t already done so I would ask that you discuss with your child how you can communicate with them during the day if needed. Please discuss various scenarios with your child and have a variety of plans in place with how to deal with them. This will give you peace of mind and improve your child’s confidence in dealing with various situations. Some suggested discussion points include:
Scenario
Possible solution
Changes to plans regarding going home etc.
Junior High students can access their mobile phones whilst at their lockers during morning tea and lunch. Changes to plans can be communicated via text.
You’re stuck in traffic and will be late picking them up. OR Your child’s phone battery is dead and they need to contact you about something important.
Tell your child not to panic if you don’t arrive within 15-20 mins of your organised time. • Junior High Reception is open until 3:45pm. • Langer Library (Yr 7-12) is open until 8:30pm Mon-Thurs and until 4:00pm Friday.• There are always staff at Girls’ & Boys’ Boarding Receptions Phones are accessible at all of the above locations.
Lost ‘Go Card’ or bus money
Junior High Reception can assist.
Forgotten lunch or morning tea
Student can use their ID Card or number to purchase.
Illness during the day
In all cases students report to Junior High Reception. They do not call home requesting to be picked up. If unwell they will be assessed by one of our nurses and either a nurse or College staff member will contact you.
Does your child know emergency numbers from memory? It is surprising how many of us rely on our mobile phones for contact numbers but don’t know how to access important numbers if the battery is dead. Please make sure your child knows a few emergency numbers from memory.
Our desire is to support your child in developing the skills to lead a productive, healthy, independent and happy life. If your child leaves an item at home which they need for the school day such as HPE gear or their device, please don’t bring it to school for them. Consequences for not being organised are an important part of the learning process and as they move towards more independence and accountability we encourage you to support them in accepting those consequences.

‘Five In A Row’
The St Peters Boys AIC Swimming Team can proudly hold their heads high after being crowned Champion College at last Friday’s annual AIC Swimming Championships.
Digging deep right until the very last event the day, the Open 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay, our boys finished the day 16 points ahead of second place Marist College Ashgrove.
This 2021 win makes it five consecutive years in a row for St Peters Boys Swimming, a magnificent feat and a real credit to all involved in the swimming program.
We can sometimes take for granted and can easily gloss over all the behind the scenes hard work, guidance and expertise that takes place each day, each week and each month in the lead up to these such events. It would be remiss if we did not make special mention and acknowledgment of our St Peters Swimming Coaches, Dean Boxall, Maxine Seear, Scott Crawford, Richard Sleight, Stewart Melton and Andrey Piana Dos Santos, who guided our team to victory.
Likewise, a massive thank you to our Swimming Coordinator, Peter Dawson, who worked tirelessly in organising, cross checking, comforting, motivating and communicating with every swimmer before, during and after the day of the swimming championship. His hard work did not go unnoticed.
Equally as important were the roles played by both Shaun Nodwell and Jeremy Lohe. Their amazing knowledge of every swimmer, every time swum, rankings and their constant communication in letting all know where St Peters stood after each race, age group event and what was required next was so paramount in our success.
All of this is the dedication of this well constructed St Peters swimming fraternity.
This years success was not just about the swimming performances on the day, it’s very much about the parents who fed the boys each week - the endless hours of coaching and training, the months of coordinating and organising - and it is also very much about the swimmers who did not get a swim on the day, the reserves.
Five consecutive St Peters AIC Swimming victories is an acknowledgement and celebration of a successful and a growing Swimming Program which has developed by a proud and enthusiastic Swimming community. On behalf of St Peters Boys Sport, I thank each and everyone involved, your College is extremely proud of you!
