This Sunday around the world, Christians begin a pilgrimage that marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time in the year.
It starts with Jesus riding a donkey down the Mount of Olives, and the Gospel of Mark invites us to see him entering the city of Jerusalem at the head of a great procession of Jewish pilgrims that arrive on the first day of Passover. They shout: “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
The Holy Week and Easter story is not the end of a journey—even though it may feel like that as we approach it almost at the end of term and the end of our southern summer season. For us as a school, we have a sense that we’re almost there, with final academic assessments and final term classes for students and Teachers. For me, it is the final week of chaplaincy at St Peters.
We are reminded again and again in Mark’s Gospel that Jesus called us to become people of ‘the way’. Easter is a story that moves us into and beyond Good Friday into a whole new beginning and new depth of living.
Rather than an ending, the Easter story is pivotal moment of transition.
Jesus entered Jerusalem as an act of storytelling – almost street theatre - where he pitted the powers of the day against his message of ‘the way’. In his land that was occupied by a powerful and sometimes violent regime, he enacted a message of God being present with the dispossessed and on the side of the poor, the weak, the vulnerable. It was and is a message that is both exciting and deeply challenging. Rather than an idealised destination, he called his followers to a journey that was transformational.
I was reminded of this when near the end of a walk. It would be one of my last opportunities to enjoy walking in the warmth of a Brisbane summer evening, for this year at least. I had missed my ferry. As I pulled up and stood gazing longingly across the river in the direction of my destination, a little girl ran past me. With her nose pushed hard up against the ferry terminal fence, the three-year old was enthralled by what she could see. As if dancing upon the water that glimmered in the early evening light, another ferry was approaching. Spinning around on her toes, the little girl turned to look me in the eye. Her face lit up and with sheer delight she shouted as if to the whole world “Are you excited?!”
Like the little girl waiting for the ferry, we can approach life with a sense of wonder and excitement, not alone, but in a community who shares a growing understanding of what it means to journey as children of God.

Important Information re The Gap bus service
Following feedback from parents, we have been working with Brisbane Bus Lines to improve The Gap bus route. Please find below the proposed changes for Term 2 including maps for your review. Any feedback on the changes must be provided to Nicola Britton, Community Liaison Officer n.britton@stpeters.qld.edu.au by next Wednesday 20 March please.
The route amendments were devised by mapping the addresses of our families to determine equitable distances to the nearest stop along the route. Stops are positioned to be convenient to multiple families on both sides of major corridors while still maintaining an efficient timetable. This may result in the removal of stops previously more convenient to a few families. Please note, drivers will stop only at marked route stops in Term 2 so please familiarise yourself with your nearest stop.
The most frequently used stops are listed below - We have tried to keep all these stops where possible or provide a close alternative.
AM: Settlement Rd stop 36; Fletcher Pde Stop 21; Boys St; Norm Buchan Park East Stop 13; St Mary’s Rainworth Stop 17; Leworthy St Stop 20; Dean St at Elizabeth Stop 18
PM: Jack Cook Park Stop 18/19; Dean St at Elizabeth Stop 18; Stuartholme Stop 31; Leworthy St Stop 20; Leworthy St Stop 19; Norm Buchan Park Central Stop 13; Norm Buchan Park East Stop 12; Boys St; Lewin St Stop 25; Fletcher Pde Stop 21; Kennedy Tce Stop 13; Enoggera Tce Stop 11; Gap Primary School Stop 36
CHANGES
Added Payne Road from Waterworks Road to Dillon Road roundabout.
The Gap Primary School stop moves to the next stop along (outside the Uniting Church) to allow for the extension down to Payne Road.
Removed the Stewart Road – McLean Parade – Kinnard Street – Ashgrove Ave loop
Retained Arthur Terrace stop
Removed Kennedy Terrace stops but added Latrobe Terrace stops. This is due to the difficult/unsafe turn from Fernberg Road onto Boundary Road - Students who used Kennedy Terrace stops should be in walking distance to either stops along Arthur Terrace or Latrobe Terrace.
Removed Boys Street and replaced with bus stop on Elizabeth Street. This route change was required per Fernberg turn change.
Retained only two Norm Buchan Park stops. In the morning the stop closest to the roundabout prevents lane change for turn at the roundabout impacting safety and time
Added Rainworth School bus stop
Removed the Leworthy Street loop and replaced with the stop along Stuartholme Road which also benefits families who reside south of Stuartholme Road. We appreciate this will impact a number of families, however the loop is difficult to undertake in a heavy vehicle, adding time to the route. We can retain the Leworthy loop, however only Stop 20 will be serviced (AM & PM).

The Hope Tree
Our first Community Focus Day was held on Friday 15 March. One of the highlights of the day was the launch of a new initiative by our ConnXions group, known as 'The Hope Tree.' This exciting project aims to cultivate a culture of kindness, inspiration, faith and belonging within our school community. The concept is simple yet powerful: individuals contribute words of encouragement and support, which are then displayed on the tree for anyone in need to take or to add their own messages of hope.
During the lunch hour on Friday, both students and staff took the opportunity to add the first encouraging messages to the tree. It was truly heartening to witness so many individuals actively participating in this endeavour, marking a promising start to what is sure to become a meaningful and ongoing initiative that fosters connections across our community. A big thank you to the students of ConnXions, under the leadership of Ms Sharon Pankhurst, for bringing this project to life. We look forward to seeing the profound impact it will have on individuals and the collective spirit of our school.

Academic Matters
Assessments and Reporting
Assessments:
The end of any term is a time when many assessments occur and these afford opportunities for growth in students, as they identify areas of strength and other areas where improvement may be needed. Whilst, for some, the completion of assessments brings feelings of apprehension and doubt, I encourage students to approach these assessments with confidence and for parents and students to use them as guides to progress and work effort.
Also, the assessments provide valuable data for Teachers to use as they prepare lessons to meet the needs of each student and provide advice and support. Following this advice allows students to improve both their engagement in learning and academic achievement.
However, it is important to realise, these assessments form only one aspect of a student’s education at St Peters and do not define any student’s potential or value. We ask at St Peters that every child learns every day and that students develop into fine young people of character – academic achievement is one of many characteristics of the whole person.
Reporting:
Parents of students in Years 7-10 will receive an interim report of the progress being made by their sons and daughters shortly after the conclusion of the term. It is important to realise this is an interim report and a more comprehensive report is written at the end of the semester; however, please use this information to support your children’s learning for the remainder of the semester. As noted in last week’s edition of The Rock, there will be a change in the way your child’s engagement in learning is reported this year. (if unsure, please read Mrs Russell’s notification).
Years 11 and 12 students and parents receive continuous reporting of progress. That is, feedback and results on how a student has performed on individual tasks. These results and feedback can be accessed as soon as the task has been assessed and returned. This access is via the Community Portal of Firefly.
All parents are reminded the Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 23 April and Wednesday 1 May. Please do not forget to book a place.
I wish all families a holy and happy Easter, and a relaxing and safe break from school.

Empowering Student Engagement: Insights from Our College Communities of Practice Program
Throughout the term, our dedicated Years 7-12 teaching staff have embarked on a reflective journey centered on student engagement and pedagogical practices through our College Communities of Practice Program (CoP). This program has provided a platform for exploration and collaboration, focusing on several key areas:
1. Partnership Approach to Learning:
Central to our discussions has been the adoption of a partnership approach, wherein students are viewed as active participants in the learning process. This shift in perspective acknowledges the importance of empowering students to take ownership of their education, fostering a sense of responsibility and agency.
2. Challenges with communicating engagement:
We've recognised the limitations of traditional metrics, that is the General Reporting Criteria (Homework, Behaviour, Classwork), in capturing the intricacies of student engagement. As a result, we've sought to implement a more nuanced measure that better reflects the many ways in which students engage with the learning process. This is based on the research of Dr Amy Berry, Honorary Fellow with the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Engagement in learning, for students in Years 7-10, will now be measured against the six pillars below:
Driving,
Investing,
Participating,
Withdrawing,
Avoiding, or
Inhibiting.
3. Teaching and Learning:
A key focus of our program has been on planning for and embedding the concept of engagement into our teaching and learning practices. By incorporating strategies that nurture students' effort, interest, curiosity, and persistence, we aim to create an environment conducive to active participation in learning experiences.
Our teaching staff have delved into pedagogical approaches aimed at enhancing student engagement. They have been encouraged to focus on areas such as supporting student autonomy and agency, energising students’ inner motivational resources, and fostering metacognition to enhance engagement.
In tandem with our pedagogical explorations, our teaching staff are committed to refining the language and practices surrounding engagement in learning. By articulating clear expectations and fostering a culture of collaboration, we strive to create an environment where every student feels valued, empowered, and motivated to achieve academic success and personal growth.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN is over for another year. The students are to be commended on their approach to the testing.
Teaching staff will receive preliminary student and school NAPLAN results in all domains except writing in time for the start of Term 2, around 4 weeks after the test period ends on 25 March 2024.
This is 8 weeks earlier than in 2023, a full school term earlier than 2022 and the earliest in the history of NAPLAN.
It means Teachers will have more time to consider the results alongside their own assessments, and then use them to inform their teaching and learning programs in the current school year.
Schools will receive their full results, including writing, from June 2024, after which parents and carers receive their child’s Individual Student Report at the start of Term 3.

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
The College’s 7-12 Inter-House Cross Country carnivals will be held next week, on Monday 25 March. The Junior High event will be held from 9:00am – 11:00am, with the Senior carnival taking place in the afternoon. All students are expected to participate in this carnival and will wear their House shirts and PE uniforms all day on Monday.
FAREWELL 9A & 9B
We wish students in 9A and 9B all the best for their upcoming Ironbark experience. These students will depart on the first day of Term 2 (Tuesday 16 April). Specific details regarding the drop-off arrangements for that morning will be emailed to all 9AB parents and students before the end of term, with a further reminder sent in the days prior to departure.
LOCKERS
At this time of term, we remind all students of the need to ensure their lockers are left free of food items that will spoil over the holidays. This is especially important for 9A/B who will have almost eight weeks away from their lockers. Students sometimes come back after the holiday break or from Ironbark to find that an impressive science experiment has developed and taken hold within their locker due to food items having been left in there. Another recurring issue is that a couple of week’s holiday break is enough for students to forget their locker combinations. They will be reminded to record their locker combinations somewhere safe (such as on their phones or in their Student Diaries) so they can access their lockers when they return next term.
END OF TERM EXPECTATIONS
It’s wonderful that everyone begins to get excited about the upcoming holiday break, but this excitement can sometimes lead to poor choices being made. Fatigue and anxiety over assessment can also result in incidents of misbehaviour. There have been several concerning situations that have occurred in recent weeks involving Junior High students - in their interactions with each other on campus as well as after hours, online. At recent Junior High and Year-Level assemblies, all students have been reminded of the need to keep behaviour standards high, to make wise decisions and to keep themselves and others safe as the holidays approach.
All staff members hope that our students have the opportunity to enjoy a well-earned rest over the Easter break and return refreshed on Tuesday 16 April.

"Finishing a season isn't just about the wins and losses; it's about the journey, the growth, and the memories created along the way. Reflect on the challenges overcome, the lessons learned, and emerge stronger for the next chapter." – Unknown
BOYS WEEKLY SPORT
Before we bid farewell to this chapter, it's essential to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable performances of individuals and teams, incredible contributions from coaches and coordinators and the tireless dedication of our parents and support groups to provide our school with a platform to showcase their talents and also to contribute to causes that are bigger than Sport. The end of the Sports season at St Peters showcased remarkable achievements across various fronts. Our Swimming team dominated AIC once again recording the eighth straight championship and winning in every single age group bar one, a personal best for the school. The dedication involved was showcased at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre with St Peters breaking 5 AIC records.
The First XI Cricket team clinched a remarkable second place, marking St Peters' best result in 26 years of AIC sport, with a 29 run win over Villanova in testing conditions on Saturday. With five wins and one loss, we congratulate these young men on how they conducted themselves both on and off the field, playing with honour and integrity. This triumph was further celebrated alongside the success of Pink Stumps Day, where the community rallied together to raise over $10,000.00 in support of breast cancer research, with inspiring words from cricket legend Glenn McGrath highlighting the significance of the cause.
Our Australian Rules squads all had commendable seasons, with our teams losing only four games between them, a highlight considering all games were played at neutral or away venues. The spirit that was displayed with our Senior teams attending the Junior games on Saturday morning was a testament to our students character, displaying a willingness to give back and mentor the younger cohorts. While the school spirit was best displayed during the schools focus round against Marist was a sight to behold and certainly set the standard for Future focus rounds!
Meanwhile, Volleyball took centre stage with an electrifying Orange Day event, transforming the mezzanine into a vibrant colosseum of support. This spirited atmosphere spurred the team to a resounding victory against Villanova. Additionally, the Volleyball PSG's efforts, including a BBQ and baked goods sale, raised over $3,000.00 to support the Leukaemia Foundation, demonstrating the community's dedication to making a positive impact beyond the playing field and a cause that is close to the hearts of St Peters community!
This term we have witnessed feats of excellence, commendable sportsmanship and community pride, this can only be foreshadowing for what the rest of the sporting story that is 2024.
Volleyball news
The Volleyball Support Group would like to say a massive thank you to the St Peters and Villanova Volleyball families and the St Peters community for their support for Orange round. There were many beautiful cakes donated and very generous donations made; we are very grateful.
The BBQ and bake sale raised a staggering $3,500.00 for the Leukaemia Foundation, sending a powerful message of hope and direct support to those facing blood cancer today, as well as supporting the Leukaemia Foundation in the amazing work it does.
The fundraising page will be open for a few more weeks for those that would still like to donate and help reach our goal of $2,500.00 Click here to show your support
Football news
On the holidays, St Peters will be hosting an Easter Football Clinic on Saturday 13 April for Boys and Girls in Years 4-9. These clinics are run by Remo Buess, former Brisbane Roar player and St Peters Coach, designed to cater for all ability levels and for players to improve their technique and understanding of the game in a fun environment. To register for the clinic click here.
On the same day St Peters will host the David Brown Cup, where our First XI will take on our Old Scholars in a Football match at 11:00am on Harts Road Oval. This match will be the curtain raiser for the AIC season with this being the last match before the official trial round. Food and drinks will be available for spectators. We look forward to seeing you all there!
Pre-season is well and truly underway with students trialling in Week 9 and 10. Please refer to the app for more information regarding the training schedule.
Chess News
Over the past fortnight, Chess has enjoyed a strong start, with strong numbers and enthusiasm on Tuesday afternoons in Dohler House. Last year the St Peters Chess program won three different divisions and were crowned on aggregate the AIC Chess Champions for 2023. This year, our coordinator Mr Bartlett and coaches are aspiring to claim the shield in back-to-back seasons for the first time since St Peters’ last repeat Chess Championship in 2005/06. This Friday night our Chess team will travel to Iona for our first friendly matches playing in groups of four.
2024 AIC CROSS COUNTRY AND RUNNERS CLUB
Earlier this term, we emailed every boy from Years 7-12 about signing on for Cross Country. We strongly encourage any boy who is looking at participating in a Term 2 Sport (AIC Rugby and AIC Football) or a Term 3 Sport (AIC Basketball and AIC Tennis) to attend at least one Cross Country/Runners Club session each week on Wednesday afternoon. This is a fantastic way to improve their overall fitness and will help them prepare for their up-and-coming team sporting season.
The Easter break will also feature holiday training times on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 6:15am – 7:30am for runners wishing to maintain their fitness.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSA. Let’s work hard in 2024 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
inter-house Cross country

Term 1 Sports Coordinators
Before reaching out to one of our lovely coordinators, please first check to see if the information you require is available on the St Peters App.
Last Saturday saw the AIC Cricket season conclude with St Peters finishing 2nd in 1sts / 2nds and 9A teams with those teams only losing one game all season. To see all our teams competing and being successful was amazing, considering most colleges have twice the numbers in their Cricket programs. This is the first time in many years that our teams have finished this high in AIC.
Last Saturday we won 1sts / 2nds / 3rds / 9A / and 9B in dominating performances against the powerhouse of Villanova. To see the transformation of our cricketers has been outstanding in all age groups. It was a very special year for so many reasons that included games v Interstate and overseas teams, a Year 9 and Open tour to Adelaide, and three teams competing in the Australian Schoolboys Championships in the Christmas Holidays.
We had teams from Years 4-12 play in the MSW and AIC competitions they made it a very memorable two terms of Cricket.

Thanks to our sponsors; we received a lot of praise for connecting with professionals from a range of fields this season. We wouldn't have been able to achieve all that we have without their generous time and support. Rockwell Automation, Hatch, Digital Parent Support Group, FIRST, Quadric, Building Block Robotics, Freebie Rentals, Battery World Indooroopilly, Snelleman Tom and GoBuilda. To our Robotics parents, we really appreciate you aiding your children to spend quality time preparing for Robotics competitions, an event where 'everyone can turn pro.'
