NAPLAN has been in the media of late with the performances of schools across the state reported upon. Based on what was reported, St Peters in 2021 topped the state for NAPLAN in Year 3; were equal fourth in Year 5; eighth in Year 7 and eleventh in Year 9 (noting that 50 of our Year 9s had to sit NAPLAN whilst they were at Ironbark!) These results reflect the positive attitude and application to learning that our students demonstrate, and the skill and commitment of our teachers to enhancing student learning. As a College we are pleased with these results, however it is important to remember that NAPLAN tests -
are one-off and provide only a snapshot of a student’s learning at school;
they test only a very narrow range of student learning and do not test the full range of the rich ways by which our students normally demonstrate what they know and can do; and
are to be used in conjunction with students’ school reports and portfolios to provide a comprehensive assessment of learning performance.
I would like to affirm that the NAPLAN tests do not reflect the wide range of values, skills and attitudes (such as emotional intelligence, character development, teamwork, communication skills, leadership and service) that are essential for students to become happy and successful adults in the 21st Century.
At St Peters as important as what our students learn, is what they do with what they have learnt. We want our students to use the knowledge, skills, capabilities, and values that they have learnt as part of a St Peters Education to make a difference in their community and in the lives of others.

Resurrection Changes Everything
“He is not here. He has risen!” Luke 24:6
I’m looking forward to holidays so we can rest and refresh from possibly the strangest school term anyone can remember. Who’d have thought we wouldn’t start school onsite until Week 3? Who would have thought we’d have closures due to rain, floods and storms? And who’d have thought we’d experience thousands of cases of COVID-19 daily in our community, after enduring lockdowns for a small handful of cases? Experienced teachers and school leaders will say they have never experienced such a difficult term. The relentless changes week to week, day to day, even hour to hour, are exhausting. The holidays will be a welcome circuit breaker.
During the holidays there is an event even more welcome than a few days off work and school. It’s Easter. It’s the day that changes the world. It’s the day we celebrate that everything is not as it seems, and that’s a great thing!
Easter is the day Jesus rose from the dead. He was crucified by Roman soldiers one Friday, falsely accused of blasphemy and insurrection. His followers hurriedly placed his body in a new tomb before sunset and the commencement of the Sabbath day. On the Sunday morning some women went to the tomb to complete the burial rites properly, only to find the stone rolled back and the tomb open. These women encountered angels telling them Jesus was not there and that he had risen from the dead. Then the risen, living Jesus appeared to his disciples variously over the course of the next 40 days. He showed that he had, in fact, been raised from the dead.
Resurrection changes everything.
Resurrection gives us life. It redefines what we know about life and death. The certainty of death after life is qualified by this new life that came to be after death. There is now hope for all who die that they too will rise. As we are joined to Jesus, united with him in faith and baptism, we too will experience resurrection to eternal life.
Resurrection gives us hope. Even times of great suffering, trouble and trauma, can be endured knowing they will not have the final word in our lives. They have been overcome, just as death has been overcome. As we trust in Jesus we know we have the promise of resurrection to eternal life, just as Jesus rose.
Resurrection gives us joy. Even in the sadness of our lives, the knowledge that Jesus is alive despite all that happened to him fills us with joy. We know the suffering and sadness of our present time is temporary, and will give way to better, brighter days and a joyful future which has no end.
When we see signs of suffering and death around us, resurrection changes our perspective. The empty tomb is a sign that Jesus is risen and promises that we too will rise with him.
May you embrace the message of Easter, and know the blessings of resurrection in your life now and forever.

2022 Next Step survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2021. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2022.
Further information on Next Step, including results from previous years, is available online at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep or on toll free telephone 1800 068 587.
2024 Sibling Admissions
Families with children already at St Peters Lutheran College wishing to enrol a sibling for 2024 are reminded to submit an online application for your child if you haven’t already done so.
Please note that due to very high demand for places in some Year Levels, applications for siblings should be received before the end of Term 1 2022. Please find the online admissions form here.
Can you recall the last time you were so engrossed in an activity that you lost track of time? What were you doing? How did it feel to be completely present in the moment?
It is likely that when you were doing this activity you entered a state of flow. This is a gratifying state where you strike the Goldilocks balance between experiencing something that is highly challenging and feeling adequately equipped to tackle the challenge. We all have interests that can result in personal growth and are deeply captivating for us. When we find a task that is simple enough to not be frustrating but tough enough that we are not bored, we can become captivated by the present moment and experience the Engagement pillar in the PERMAH framework.
Experiencing engagement results in personal growth and plays a fundamental role in helping us live meaningful lives. Suggestions for building engagement in your home include:
Taking the free VIA Character Strengths survey (approximately 10 minutes) and considering how you can utilise your Signature Strengths on a daily basis.
Removing distractions that are preventing you from entering a flow state, such as technology.
Making a list of activities that trigger a state of flow for you and your family members. Aim to allocate at least 15 minutes each day to one of these activities.
Some activities might include:
Practicing mediation, yoga or mindfulness,Playing a board game or doing a puzzle,
Reading a book,
Trying something creative, such as painting or sewing,
Working in the garden,
Playing a sport.

Drop Off and Pick Up
Students’ safety remains our priority at St Peters.
I remind you that parents should not be stopping on solid yellow lines, next to the curb, on both Lambert Road and Harts Road, to allow for children to alight the vehicle. We have witnessed our students being dropped off, on yellow lines, on the opposite side of the road and then having to cross a very busy road in the mornings. Similarly, parents are parking in the No Standing zones on Lambert Road (effectively blocking traffic) making it a very dangerous scenario for not only our students, but others in the community.
This is incredibly dangerous, and I ask that you reconsider this decision at drop off each morning and take full notice of the road rules and restrictions in these areas of our college.
Please be patient as you arrive at the College each morning and keep the wellbeing of our young people as your priority.
Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 1
A reminder that the booking system for our Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews opened on Monday of this week and will remain open until 3.00pm Friday 25 March.
Harmony Day
Last week St Peters celebrated Harmony Week with many activities, devotions, reflections and conversations. The Primary Years held a special Prep to Year 6 Assembly today which incorporated Lower Primary music ensembles and we also acknowledged our Term 1 celebration of Heads, Hands and Hearts Ambassadors with their badges.
The Australian Government promotes Harmony Week stating, 'Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate our diversity and work to maintain it.'
At St Peters we pride ourselves on our inclusive and respectful environment. We aim for the values of care, dignity, and respect to permeate everything we do. It is wonderful to observe this in action amongst our Primary Years students. We celebrate these values as we recognise the Heads Hands and Hearts awards. One student per class has been nominated as an acknowledgement of the way they have modelled the College’s values of care, dignity, and respect to all.
Students who received this ambassadorship have demonstrated they have authentically used their God-given talents to shape the world around them in a positive manner. They have grown as caring citizens who can recognise and respond to the needs of others and the needs of our planet. They have developed an ethic of service through being caring, open-minded, respectful and reflective, while developing greater levels of self-confidence, maturity and the insight of a true global citizen.
We congratulate our Term 1 Heads, Hands, Hearts recipients and thank these students for their service to the St Peters Community.

FAREWELL 9A & 9B
I’d like to wish students in 9A and 9B all the best for their coming Ironbark experience. These students will depart on the first day of Term 2 (Wednesday 20 April). An email explaining drop off procedures will be sent during the holidays.
LOCKERS
A reminder for all students to please make sure their lockers are left LOCKED and CLEAN i.e free of anything that will spoil, over the holidays. This is especially important for 9A/B who will have 7 ½ weeks away from their lockers.
END OF TERM EXPECTATIONS
It’s great to be excited about the coming break but this excitement can sometimes lead to poor choices being made.
Fatigue and anxiety over assessment can also cause young people to ‘act out’. All students have been reminded to keep behaviour standards high as the holidays approach.
TERM 2 UNIFORM
A reminder that Term 2 marks the change over to the formal Winter Uniform. Details of requirements can be found in the Student Diary and the Junior High Handbook. Please remember to try things on early to allow for alternation to length of trousers. The compulsory wearing of blazers will commence Week 3 of Term 2.
HAPPY EASTER!
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students on the way they have conducted themselves throughout Term 1, particularly with all the challenges and changes we have experienced during the term. The attitude of Junior High students towards their studies and cocurricular involvement has been very pleasing.
I’d also like to thank our Junior High parents for their support during the term.
I hope that all families have the opportunity to enjoy a well-earned rest over the Easter break and look forward to the students returning refreshed on Wednesday 20 April.

Senior School News
Last Friday was the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, and the theme for 2022 is 'Kindness Culture'. At the Senior School Assembly last week, student leaders highlighted the important message behind being kind to others to promote inclusion, respect and community. Additionally, we discussed cyberbullying with a focus on addressing the trend of students creating anonymous social media accounts. The video resource created for 'Bullying. No Way!' addresses this issue clearly, and can be viewed here.
We encourage parents to discuss the importance of positive online behaviour with students at home. If you have any concerns or questions about this matter, useful resources can be found here.
The Scholars' Assembly will be held next Monday morning in the Dron Auditorium and will once again provide the opportunity to pay tribute to our top achieving academic students from Years 10-12, 2021.
At this formal occasion, we welcome back our highest achieving QCE students along with our IB Merit Award winners (seven in a subject), students who received a distinction award (40+) and CAS awards for outstanding Creative, Active and Service. It is always pleasing to see the students recognised for their hard work but It is also inspiring for younger students in the audience to learn where these students are now, beyond their time at St Peters. Each student will be announced along with their chosen pursuits (usually university course) for 2022. It never ceases to amaze me as to the diverse range of skills and areas of interest that our students have chosen. I look forward to following their progress over the coming years and wish them every blessing on their journey.
We also welcomed a large cohort of new families to our community last Friday night at our New Parent Welcome Night. The overwhelming feedback from parents on this evening was how impressed they were with the spirit and welcoming nature of our community. I would like to extend a further welcome to these families and trust that their partnership with the College in the coming years will be a fruitful one. I look forward to working with you all over the coming years.

Business Studies ECOMAN program
The Business Studies Department of St Peters Lutheran College would like to make you aware of a wonderful opportunity that your Years 10 or 11 student could be involved in. St Peters Lutheran College is hosting ECOMAN, a program run by QPEC (Queensland Private Enterprise Centre) that allows students to experience managing a business firsthand through a computer simulation. Students taking part in this incursion will spend two days immersed in the world of budgets and cash flows, demand and supply, profits and losses. As a member of their team, your student will make countless business decisions in order to come out on top, with the most profitable business. They will need to perform specific responsibilities matching their position description and present key data and information to stakeholders.
This voluntary incursion will occur on the 31 March and 1 April, the upcoming student free days at the end of term, running from 8am to 3pm. It is open to the first 20 students to hand in permission forms and make the payment of $65. Please contact o.larney@stpeters.qld.edu.au if you are interested in attending. The forms and payment information will then be forwarded to you.

A Little Friday Night Music – A Great Night of Music

Congratulations to all of the students in Bella Voce Girls Choir, Forte Voce Boys Choir, the Junior Percussion Ensembles, Junior High Stage Band, Concert Band 2 and Concert Band 1 on their confident, proficient and entertaining performances after only a few weeks of rehearsal.

Gabbie E sings national anthem for speedway grand opening
St Peters Boarder Gabbie E recently travelled to Sydney to sing the Australian National Anthem in front of a 7000-strong crowd, for the opening of Eastern Creek Speedway. Her family has a long and proud connection to motorsport and Gabbie was thrilled to be chosen to perform at this event and to pay tribute to her late Poppa.
"Eastern Creek Speedway posted to Facebook stating that they were looking for someone to sing the National Anthem for the opening night of the new 70-million-dollar motorsports complex in Paramatta. When it was posted, both my uncles and cousin called me as two of them were racing that weekend. They told me to give it a go, so I did! I entered and was chosen as a finalist, then the winner. I am so excited to be performing at this historic opening event, as I am the proud granddaughter of the late Colin Bell (Belly) and the founder of CJR Motorsport, a true gentleman of Australian Speedway, who raced right around this country for the last 50 years and embodied the spirit of competition, determination, ingenuity, and sportsmanship.
Colin Bell (Poppa), my dad, uncles, cousin and brother have all raced, built, and produced race cars and motor X and have been involved in and supported Australian Speedway for the past 50 years from the early days of street stockers, super sedans, and litre sprint cars, through to the mighty midgets at tracks across Australia. Poppa, dad, and my uncles have all raced at the original Parramatta Speedway during the past 40 years and my Poppa alongside his sons and grandsons have built many race car engines that have been raced all over Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. His engines and cars have also been raced here in Australia with the infamous Christopher Bell (USA), Hayden Williams (NZ), and Andrew Felker (USA) who have seen huge success in his cars.
His engines, cars, passion, and legacy for motorsport live on and continue to be steered by my uncle Jason Bell and proudly his son Jack Bell has now taken to the wheel of the race car, carrying on the Bell racing legacy. We lost my Poppa late last year and I see this opportunity as something that I would be honoured to do as I love to sing. However, I am sure that Poppa and Mamma would be so proud to see me sing at the opening of the brand-new Eastern Creek Speedway. He had a love for his family, friends, life, and motorsport and always saw the positive side of life. So, as you can see this opportunity combines many passions of mine and my family's history and lives and I am extremely excited to be there on the night to experience something truly awesome."

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Anon
I can’t believe I am writing the last Rock article for Term 1 as we approach the Easter Holidays. What a term!
As we head into the break, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the commitment the girls are making when they sign up to a sport at St Peters. We pride ourselves on many things but when it comes to sport, we particularly value commitment and communication. Commitment to a team is something we emphasise in Girls Sport, and parents we would appreciate your support in reiterating the importance of honouring a commitment. When girls sign on for a sport it is important, they consider whether they can uphold this commitment for the season. Each sport will have two training sessions and a game/meet each week in season and it is vital that girls do their best to attend these sessions. If they are unable to attend a session, we ask the girls to please communicate this with their Coach and the Coordinator of the sport.
We understand this term has had many challenges and we look forward to starting a fresh in Term 2.
From all of us in Sports House, we wish you a Happy Easter and have a wonderful, safe holiday.

After an unfortunate start to the season, Round 2 saw many Football fields around Brisbane make a fantastic recovery. This allowed St Peters to host Clayfield to kick off our season. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, our Open and Senior A teams had their matches cancelled. We were able to mix these teams together to allow them to have a strong hit out at Toowong and work on their match fitness on the large pitch.
The Intermediate girls had a convincing 8-0 win with an exciting performance from all the girls involved. A special well done to the goalkeeper, Rose Jolly for keeping the opposition scoreless, and to April F on finishing with three goals.
Some of our Junior girls had their first taste of QGSSSA sport and managed to come away with a 3-1 win in a tough match. It was so great to see the competitive nature, along with the smiles from all the girls.
Our Senior B team fought hard but went down 7-2 against St Aidan’s but have shown some great signs of positive improvement and enjoyment for the sport.
Well done to all teams – it is going to be an exciting season!

Round 2 saw our first official games for the season. The 9As and 8As has excellent wins against Clayfield College, as did the Senior Bs against Brisbane Girl’s Grammar School (2), whilst the 8Bs and 7Bs suffered narrow defeats against their Brisbane Girls Grammar School (2) opponents. This week all St Peters teams will be in action against St Aidan’s. The games will be spread over Harts Rd Oval and Mayer Oval so please check the Draw on the St Peters App for game locations. We’d love to see as many families and friends cheering the girls on as they play these formidable opponents.

U18B For the third time this season our Open Water Polo team took on the Polo Bears, this time it was the Semi Final fourth place v first place. Back in Round 1(9 October 2021) we played them and went down 8-4. We played them again in Round 10 (19 February 2022) and lost to them 12-2. The girls played a great game in defense, they really hassled the Polo Bears. Sian F playing in Centre Forward position gained three five metre penalties, unfortunately, we were unable to convert them. Remaya B had an absolute cracker of a game in goals.
The turnaround in our performance from Round 10 to the Semi Final was remarkable. It was great to see the girls talking, backing each other up and playing great Water Polo.
It was an emotional day for our Year 12 girls Abi W, Clarinda H, Sian F, Milly T, Ruby G-D, Ella C & Zoe M but they certainly did St Peters proud by the way they played.
We lost the match 9-3.
U14C Our U14C team had a fantastic season finishing in second place on the ladder after the last round, we played UQ Barras in the Semi Final (second v third).
Unfortunately for us we had four girls out sick for Saturday’s game.
We were able to get special exemption for super sub Laura McK to play up from out U13B team. With limited subs we held Barras to 1-1 draw at half time, the second quarter the score was 2-2 for a while and then 3-2. The third quarter saw us down 3-5. The final score was a 3-7 loss.
Fatigue and having the sun in our eyes in the second half was very tough. Emily T in goals stopped some great attempts and our overall teamwork in both attack and defense was a real credit to St Peters.

On Saturday 12 March (AIC Round 6), St Peters Boys Sport embraced and supported a day of cancer awareness. Our Cricketers, from Years 5 through to Opens, participated in ‘Pink Stumps Day’ in conjunction with the McGrath Foundation, whilst our 1st Volleyball Team wore orange in support of Leukaemia. It was so wonderful to see our sporting community, together with Marist College, get around these great initiatives to support such great causes.
Last Saturday 19 March, saw the completion of our Term 1 sports of AIC Cricket, AIC Australian Rules and AIC Volleyball. It certainly was a disruptive and tough season for everyone but most importantly, all who were involved exhibited resilience, determination, and endless enthusiasm week after week. Despite premiership points being awarded to only ‘First’ teams for Term 1 Boys Sport in 2022, all other age divisions remained equally competitive when competing. We are extremely proud of how all our boys have performed, how hard they have trained, competed well and above all displaying ‘Plus Ultra’ both on and off the sporting field.
Cricket, Australian Rules & Volleyball Aggregate Results
St Peters First XI Cricket – 7th
St Peters First VI Volleyball – 2nd
St Peters First XVIII Australian Rules – 8th
Congratulations to the following St Peters teams who finished off their respective season as undefeated.
11A Volleyball Team (Undefeated)

2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
Earlier this term we emailed each boy from Years 7 to 12 about signing on for Cross Country. We do strongly encourage any boy who is looking at participating in a Term 2 sport (AIC Rugby and AIC Football) or a Term 3 sport (AIC Basketball and AIC Tennis) to get along to at least one Cross Country / Runners Club session each week. This is a fantastic way to improve their overall fitness and will stand them in good preparation for their up-and-coming team sporting season.
Cross Country at St Peters has traditionally been well received and very competitive at both AIC and QGSSA. Let’s work hard in 2022 to maintain this high standard and consolidate on past years participation and performances. Training times for Cross Country can be found on the St Peters App.
Wet Weather and Cancellations
With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.

Recently our Years 2 and 7 students visited Ross Roy, the College's original building, to learn about its history (and take a peek into the Head of College's office).
Ross Roy was built in 1897 as a villa residence and received its present name from second owner William Ross Munro and his eldest son, Roy. It was purchased by the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia in 1944 and became St Peters Lutheran College in 1945, originally housing the entire school.
The students were excited to walk through the building where Mr Kotzur has his office and were amazed at the old stove in the kitchen as well as the cast iron safe which housed the treasures of the original home owners.
Old Scholars Vs Opens Basketball Match
The Old Scholars Basketball team took on the St Peters Opens a couple of weeks on a Friday afternoon. It was a close match with the Old Scholars narrowly beating the opens in a 42-41 victory. It was great to see some of our newest Old Scholars back on campus.
