A very warm welcome back to Term 2. I trust that the term break was an opportunity for many people to relax, refresh and reconnect with family and friends. A very special welcome is extended to those new families that have joined St Peters this term. We hope that you settle in and feel part of our community very quickly.
Students (hopefully in collaboration with their parents) should have reflected on their Term 1 Interim Report Card and established their learning goals for the Term ahead. Having a clear direction and targets together with steps in place to achieve them are critical to our young people achieving their academic Personal Bests. It is important that all students get straight back into the routine of school and study in order to build solid foundations and momentum right from the start. What our students do now, will stand them in good stead for all that is to come as the term progresses.
Ironbark Turns 50
Over the middle weekend of the Term break, Old Scholars from the first group of students to attend the pilot program for Ironbark in April to June of 1974 returned to celebrate 50 years. It was a unique program of outdoor education and farm life, living and learning together for nine weeks. At the time, Ironbark was an innovation that was unlike anything that had ever been undertaken in the Australian Educational landscape.
I was fortunate to spend a few hours with that pilot group of Old Scholars, now all aged in their mid-60s for that 50th Anniversary Weekend. I was curious to understand why they attended? What was the impact of Ironbark on them at the time? What has been the impact of Ironbark on their life? In listening to the reflections of that Pilot Group from 1974, Ironbark played a pivotal role in shaping their identity, the formation of their character and was a time of immense personal growth. Their responses could have been and are the responses of each of the successive cohorts who have attended Ironbark over the ensuing 50 years. I constantly meet Old Scholars who tell me that Ironbark shaped them as a person.
There is little doubt that over the past 50 years, Ironbark has become one of the iconic aspects of St Peters Education. It is a true differentiator in the St Peters offering and the embodiment of Plus Ultra, More Beyond. It is central to the St Peters way and the development of our Plus Ultra Mindset.
Owen Ronalds, Class of 1976 who attended that first Pilot Group in 1974 captures the significance of Ironbark well when he wrote of his Ironbark experience – ‘I have learned a lot, and changed a lot here. I know that it will affect the rest of my life, and my relationship to other people. I hope and pray that I can return here. This phase has been one of the best, most happy times of my life’.
Long may this continue.

Faith and Doubt
In Senior School Chapels at Indooroopilly this term, we are exploring misconceptions about Christians. One misconception out there is that a person of religious or Christian faith cannot doubt. This misconception believes that doubt and faith do not mix.
There is a classic Easter story in the gospels of the New Testament that dispels this misunderstanding. It’s the story of 'Doubting Thomas'. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples did not see Jesus after he rose from the dead. Thomas who is called the doubter because he said to his fellow disciples I want proof. I want to see evidence that Jesus is alive and risen from the dead. I want to stick my hands into Jesus' pierced side and see his nail-wounded hands for myself. Thomas doubts Jesus is alive. He wants to see for himself that it is Jesus that the other disciples have seen, not a ghost, apparition, or something else.
When Jesus confronts Thomas, he says to him see my wounds, stick your hand into my side. Thomas has the answer he is looking for and believes it is Christ his Lord.
What proof or evidence are you looking for, or do you need, to believe in Jesus as the one who has conquered death and is your living, Lord?
Thomas doubted. But his initial doubt was not a bad thing as it led him to question and look for the truth. When we likewise doubt it can also be a positive thing if the doubt leads us to search for the truth, the wonder and the mystery of life. God can use our doubt to lead to faith and use it for his good purposes. Doubt is part of our journey to faith, and in faith. Of course, for some people serious unanswered doubt can lead to unbelief. But when I reflect on my faith journey when I have been honest to God and brought my doubts to God as Thomas did, my faith has been strengthened and made more certain. In the struggle of doubt, God can work faith in us.
There is a great quote from a Christian theologian called Frederick Buechner who said;
“Whether your faith is that there is a God or that there is not a God, if you don’t have any doubts you are either kidding yourself or asleep. Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.”
As you continue your journey through life and this term at St Peters, may you be encouraged by your doubts. May God lead you through your doubts to trust and confidence in his risen Son. And may you be blessed with belief even though you have not seen Jesus. Jesus the wounded human yet God’s son, risen and alive.
Let’s pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for letting Thomas doubt, and for showing yourself after your resurrection. Strengthen our faith in you as the living Son of God. Amen.

CHANGES TO THE GAP BUS TERM 2
Thank you to those families who provided feedback on the proposed changes to The Gap bus route.
I am delighted to confirm the Leworthy loop will be retained as well as the addition of Payne Road. I encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the changes below as well as the specific stops the bus will make. Stops were devised based on tap on/off data of all students.
Please Note: some stops previously serviced have been removed and drivers will only stop at those marked pink pinson the map.
These changes will be in effect from Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
Added Payne Rd from Waterworks Rd to Dillon Rd roundabout.
The Gap Primary School stop moves to the next stop along (outside the Uniting Church) to allow for the extension down to Payne Rd.
Removed the Stewart Rd – McLean Pde – Kinnard St – Ashgrove Ave loop
Retained Arthur Tce stop
Removed Kennedy Tce stops but added Latrobe Tce stops. This is due to the difficult/unsafe turn from Fernberg Rd onto Boundary Rd - Students who used Kennedy Tce stops should be in walking distance to either stops along Arthur Tce or Latrobe Tce.
Removed Boys St and replaced with bus stop on Elizabeth St. This route change was required per Fernberg turn change.
Retained only two Norm Buchan Park stops. In the morning the stop closest to the roundabout prevents lane change for turn at the roundabout impacting safety and time.
Added Rainworth School bus stop
Leworthy St loop retained however only Stop 20 will be serviced (AM & PM).
Please keep in mind when reviewing the maps, the route is undertaken by a 12.5 metre long vehicle, and our route may approach turns from a different direction to Council services.
For more information, please refer to the Location & Transport page of our website.

Schoolwise Blog: Top 10 Tips for Middle Readers (and beyond)
It is no secret that reading offers a wealth of benefits, from reducing stress to boosting cognitive function and expanding vocabulary. Encouraging children to embrace reading and establish good reading habits beyond their early years sets the stage for academic success and a lifelong love for books.
In this latest Schoolwise article, Primary Years Teacher Librarian, Christina Wheeler, shares valuable insights and strategies for guiding children through the transition to longer and more complex novels during the middle reader years and beyond.
Welcome to Term 2. I hope everyone had an enjoyable break and is ready for term to begin.
Weeks 2 and 3 will see the first of the Years 7 to 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews held for the year – Tuesday, 23 April and Wednesday, 1 May - from 3:30pm – 7:00pm in the Dohler and Schneider building classrooms. These interviews provide valuable opportunities for parents and students to speak about ways to improve the learning outcomes of the students and how students can develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of the concepts studied across the curriculum. The development of student engagement in learning is a priority of the College and discussion of this will lead to better outcomes, so please read the Term 1 Interim Report carefully and seek clarification from teachers should you need. Also, many teachers have requested an interview with parents, so please make an appointment to speak with your son or daughter’s teacher if an appointment has been requested.
Prefects and student leaders will be available to assist and provide information and directions if needed, and further information on Parent-Teacher Interviews and how to book, has been forwarded via email.

I am delighted to welcome you back to Term 2 in the Primary Years at St Peters. I trust that your Easter break was one filled with family and friends, and that rest and recuperation was a priority after a busy start to the year.
Staff in the Primary Years are excited about the Teaching and Learning Program for this term and look forward to welcoming our students back with enthusiasm and love.
HARMONY DAY
Cultural diversity is an inherent aspect of modern society and in our community at St Peters. It enriches our communities by bringing together a wide array of cultures, traditions, and histories, contributing to our unique identity and strength. Embracing and celebrating this diversity is essential for fostering inclusion and a sense of belonging among children. By valuing every child's cultural background, we enable them to excel in all facets of life. Nurturing an environment of curiosity, open-mindedness, and respect for all cultures, will set a strong example for all young people. Through collective efforts, we can pave the way for a more accepting and vibrant future.
Late in Term 1, students wore an orange T-shirt or accessory to celebrate Harmony Day. We collected a gold coin in donation for Australian Lutheran World Service, an organisation who work to support those who are hurt, as they build a better life for themselves and their families.
We were delighted to showcase Harmony Day in the Primary Years at our Head, Hands and Heart Assembly at the conclusion of Term 1. You can watch our celebrations on the Primary Years Parent Information page on Firefly - HARMONY DAY VIDEO 2024.

Junior High
Junior High News
As we begin an exciting new term it is important that we all take time to reflect on our experiences during Term 1. The start of the year often presents challenges for students, particularly for those who have started at a new school. Our Junior High students are to be commended for the resilience they demonstrated throughout Term 1 and we wish them all the best as they embark on their second term of 2024. The term will invariably present different experiences, consolidate or adjust friendships, provide new academic learnings and for some, facing personal challenges in navigating these changes.
INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
Due to heavy rain that fell in the last week of term, our Inter-House Cross Country Carnival regrettably had to be postponed. The rescheduled events for the Primary Years, Junior High and Senior School took place on Wednesday this week, with Junior High students enthusiastically embracing their afternoon event. Photos and House results will be available through the College’s social media platforms in the coming days, as well as announcements from our Sports department at upcoming assemblies.
TERM 1 REPORTS
During the Easter break, parents would have received their child’s Mid-Semester Reports via Firefly and the Community Portal. We encourage parents to spend time with their children reflecting on results. As a sub-school we have encouraged students to work to their full potential and achieve results that reflect their ability. If students have been able to do this then they should be very proud of their efforts and achievements. If not, why not?
Did they establish effective study habits and routines? Are there clear boundaries in place regarding the use of technology at night? Are they getting enough sleep? Did they spend enough time on homework and assignments? Did they seek guidance from teachers in a timely manner? Did they actively engage in class work and discussions? By understanding what may be blocking them from reaching goals, students are more likely to overcome them and experience success in the future.
A meaningful indication of a student’s work ethic and application in class comes from the teacher’s observations and evaluation of their participation and level of engagement in class. This new criterion that was included in the Term 1 progress reports, indicates the teachers’ perception about how each individual was engaged in their learning. It should be the aim of every student to receive a high engagement rating as outlined in the reports.
During Academic Care and Wellbeing sessions in class, students will also be reflecting on their experiences and results in Term 1 in order to evaluate their personal efforts, their achievements and to identify or refine their goals for Term 2.
The Term 2 ASSESSMENT CALENDAR will be available on Firefly and students and parents are encouraged to refer to it regularly to assist with preparation and organisation.
PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
As you are aware, the first session of the parent teacher interviews will occur next week, with the second session offering in Week 3. These interviews are a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s teachers and discuss progress, areas requiring attention and strategies for ongoing improvement. While these evenings are an important and effective way of parents meeting numerous teachers in a short time, we would also like to remind parents of other modes of communication which are available throughout the year.
If you have been unable to book in a scheduled appointment with all of your child’s teachers but have ongoing concerns with their progress in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant teacher to open the lines of communication. Email is often the best form of communication as teachers are busy attending classes throughout the day. Emailing a teacher will enable them to respond more easily within a reasonable time. A teacher may follow up with a phone call or suggest some suitable times to meet if that is more convenient.
We recommend that the Form Class teacher be copied in on any correspondence regarding your child. Form Class teachers endeavour to work with their form class to create a unique level of support - which means if you have any concerns relating to your child’s attitude, social skills, resilience, organisation or other pastoral care related issues, the student’s Form Class teacher is generally the best person to contact. The Year Level Coordinators are also available to support and assist students and parents.
IRONBARK DEPARTURE
On Tuesday morning this week, we farewelled the 9A and 9B students, our first group for the year to set off on their five-week Ironbark adventure. Mr Higgins (Year 9 Coordinator) and other members of staff look forward to visiting our students at various points during their Ironbark journey and wish the 9AB students all the best for the coming weeks.
YEAR 7 & 8 CAMP DATES
Organisation for the Year 7 & 8 camps is already underway, and information will be coming out to parents in the coming weeks. Our outdoor education programs are a compulsory part of the Pastoral Care offerings at the College as they develop student connectedness, resilience and self-confidence.

For our Opens team it's a great experience to play against more physical, experienced players. Our opens team definitely learnt from the Old Scholars and will put this into practice for the remainder of the QGSSSA season.
With help from SPOSA, the Old Scholars got to enjoy some refreshments after the game, which was an opportunity to connect with the current students.

Football News
Over the holidays, our Football Program ran a Easter Football Clinic, a coaching workshop and featured the Old Scholars Football match on Saturday 13 April. The Football clinic kicked off a day for the Football fiesta with over 50 students attending and was overseen by Mr Remo Buess, ex-Brisbane Roar player and a team of SPOSA coaches focusing on Football fundamentals with game-based activities. Some of the younger students featured as mascots for the Old Scholars team accompanying them onto the Harts Road Oval field as they walked out before the game. It was fantastic to see so many young students staying after the clinic and watching the match, a great show of culture and a credit to the work of Mr Mulligan, Mr Buess and the Football Support Group.
The David Brown Cup was hotly contested in a high-scoring match with both teams trading goals early for a 1-1 draw, but ultimately triumphed over youth with the Old Scholars running out 6-3 winners. Congratulations on an entertaining match!
Finally the day was wrapped up with a coaching workshop overseen by Adam Pengelly, Socceroos Analyst and U23 Matildas assistant coach. Coaches were taken through key principles of play and how to make adjustments in matches as well as structure a half-time team talk with efficiency. We look forward to working with Adam again this term to support our coaching teams.
Rugby News
In the world of Rugby Union, the past week has been nothing short of exhilarating. Senior Rugby camp emerged as a resounding success, with boys immersing themselves in three nights at Boys Boarding and two nights of camaraderie at Ironbark. The camp wasn't just about fun; it was a crucible for team bonding, with a series of challenging activities fostering an unbreakable team spirit. With set goals for the season, these boys are already showing tremendous dedication and focus in their pursuit of excellence. Boys were challenged with outdoor education and team building activities such as general farm job maintenance and an egg drop challenge where boys were split into two teams and tasked with designing a suitable capsule for egg and dropping from an incredible height and ensuring the egg remained intact. To demonstrate teamwork and leaning on one another, boys needed to build a stretcher out of everyday materials for a 5km hike with rotating students lying on the stretcher.
Meanwhile, the Ballymore Cup showcased our talent on a competitive stage. Our U15 team displayed commendable prowess, engaging in spirited matches throughout the weekend. However, it was the U18 squad that truly stole the show, securing the top spot in their division with an undefeated streak over the three-day event.
As we celebrate these achievements, let's continue to support and cheer for our Rugby Union teams as they strive for greatness on and off the field. Our Rugby Union Teams will play the majority of their games at Mayer Oval on Saturday, so come on down for our Trial Round!
Rowing News
Boys Rowing Camp was an amazing week of hard work, huge meals and LOTS of fun and games. The four day camp was held at Pine Rivers Rowing Club on Lake Kurwongbah and the boys were accommodated across the road at the YMCA North Pine Lodge. There were four boys’ dorms comprised of multi-year level groups, each captained by our seniors Flynn G, Luca K, Ted A and Sam M.
Day 1 started with ergo trials and getting the boats rigged and ready to train. Day 2 began with sculls trials over a 2km course for the Senior Shed and 1km course for the Junior Shed before training started in earnest once crews were announced at morning tea. All our Year 10’s also had the opportunity to row in the 8+ during camp and for most this was the first time they had rowed in a sweep boat.
Day 3 involved three long sessions for the Senior Shed whilst the Junior Shed had the opportunity for some R&R at the YMCA pool, after two long sessions early in the day. We concluded the day with our ‘Talent Night’ which can only be described as hilarious. Day 4 started with a mini regatta where crews started on handicaps and raced each other. We were joined on the final day by several old scholars who returned to join the senior boys for a session in the 8+.
New friendships, new blisters and a great sense of camaraderie were what we brought home.
The SQSRC regatta season commences shortly with 4 regattas on the following dates at the Queensland State Rowing Centre, Wyaralong:
Regatta 1 – Saturday 4 May
Regatta 2 – Saturday 18 May
Regatta 3 – Saturday 25 May
Trophy Regatta – Saturday 8 June
More information about regattas including the regatta draw (when available from Rowing QLD) will be posted on the Sports App Rowing in due course.

If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.

Rocket League eSports Team Undefeated at QUT
Massive congratulations to our St Peters eSports Rocket League team for their outstanding victory at QUT on the weekend. They played in a round robin event against seven other schools and were undefeated, dropping only one game all day. Team members Aarav Bannore, George Hill, Hamish Herring and their new coach, Matias Fiores, were supported by St Peters parents during the gruelling day of competition. Following an online safety competition, the match play got under way and our team remained focused all day.
QUT promoted the essence of Australian sport through values of fairness, respect, responsibility and safety. Our team displayed all these values in congratulating other teams, playing fairly and thanking QUT competition organisers. Match play was a random 3v3 Soccer pitch, with 5 minute matches and unlimited overtime for ties; making for some long matches.
Matches were played at the Gardens Point campus’ eSports arena and QUT’s The Cube. This gave our team the opportunity to explore several university facilities during the day.
