Welcome to Term 2. A very warm welcome is extended to those new families that have joined our community this term. We hope that you settle in and feel part of our community very quickly.
Did You Make Your Bed This Morning?
I’m a big believer in doing the ‘small things’ in life well. If we get the seemingly little things, the everyday things that we often overlook or take for granted right, then the bigger things or the more challenging things aren’t quite so difficult. It is in doing the little things well that the foundations for success in life are laid.
This leads me to pose what may seem to be an unusual question - did your child make their bed this morning?
The US Navy Seals certainly did. The US Navy Seals often considered the most highly trained elite military force in the world emphasise starting each day off by making your bed. The thinking is if you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. As a result, at the end of the day you will have accomplished many things. For the Navy Seals the practice of making your bed every morning reinforces that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. Given the responsibilities of a Navy Seal making your bed every morning matters.
For our students getting the little things right are just as important for setting them up for success. Wearing your uniform correctly, being punctual for class, completing homework and using good manners might seem inconsequential but they are establishing habits and patterns of behaviour that help our students deal with more challenging situations and are laying the foundations for success.
I wonder did your child make their bed this morning?

Anzac Day
Anzac Day is a day of remembrance, a day to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country. It's a day to remember the bravery of those who fought for our freedoms, and to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We remember the stories of those who fought in the trenches of Gallipoli and on the Western Front. We remember the battles of Tobruk, Kokoda, Long Tan, and many others. We remember the bravery and the sacrifice of those who served in all theatres of war, those who served at sea, and those who served on the home front.
We remember the families who lost loved ones, the communities that were torn apart, and the sacrifices that were made to protect our freedoms. And we remember the lessons of the Anzac’s – their courage, their mateship, and their resilience in the face of adversity.
On Monday 24 April, we will commemorate Anzac Day, through our College Anzac Day Service. The service is a significant event in our College calendar and will be the first occasion for our College together as a whole. Parents and guardians are invited to attend our Anzac Day assembly.
After our assembly, the Junior High and Senior School Captains will be representing St Peters at the Anzac Student Commemorative Service in Brisbane City where they will be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph.
On Tuesday, our Marching Band will be performing in the Anzac Day Parade being held in Brisbane City.

Lessons To Be Learned From 'Doubting Thomas'
Many people have heard of a ‘Doubting Thomas’. Thomas didn’t believe the other disciples when they said that they had seen Jesus, that he was no longer dead, but alive again. After Jesus’ death, Thomas had cut himself off from the other apostles, and walked alone, which was a big mistake. But we must remember that he was stressed and in deep grief. At times like this, we all have a tendency to want to isolate ourselves. But while it is understandable, it is not necessarily helpful.
However, it seems Thomas hadn’t cut himself off completely. When he met with the others, he noticed a difference in them. Their fear was largely gone, to be replaced by joy. And peace. It was clear that something had breathed new life into them. They claimed they had seen Jesus.
But Thomas was unable to take their word for it. He had to be sure. We can sympathise with Thomas he was merely echoing the human cry for certainty. However, here on this earth there is no such thing as certainty about spiritual things. If there was, faith wouldn’t be necessary.
However, Thomas did one important thing – he joined with the other apostles. Now he had the support of the community. It was within this community that he encountered the risen Jesus, and so found faith again.
To be a believer (or just a spiritual person) in today’s world can be a lonely business. We need support. Here is where the community comes in. It is within the community that we can work through our doubts, ask the difficult questions of our faith, and to sustain and nurture one another. And our school community not only supports each one of us in our spiritual journey, but also in our daily life journey as we juggle the different aspects of our work and daily lives. When our lives get stressful, they can also be isolating. And like Thomas discovered, going alone can be hard.
As we return to a new term of school life, we realise what this community means: we are present to support one another, to listen to and learn from one another. And just as Thomas discovered all those years ago, we too find that Jesus is truly here among us in our community, travelling along with us.

Academic Matters
Staffing Movement
At the conclusion of Term 1, the College had a number of staff take leave or embark on new career opportunities which has resulted in several unavoidable class teacher changes, across the College.
Senior level classes largely involve internal movement, while others have the opportunity to experience teachers new to St Peters. While all teachers at St Peters are highly qualified and experienced, as is standard practice at the College, we have processes in place to ensure a smooth transition for both staff and students. Consequently, we are confident that all students will receive the same level of instruction, care and support that they have come to expect.
In the coming days, teachers new to these classes will introduce themselves to parents via email. Please use this opportunity to reach out if you have any queries or information you feel may be relevant to your student’s learning and wellbeing.
In addition, the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews are based on the Term 1 timetable. Should you wish to speak to the teacher who taught your child in Term 1, and they are still employed by the College, this opportunity is available to you via the normal booking system.
We appreciate your understanding and support.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
A reminder that Years 7-12 Parent Teacher Interviews will occur in coming weeks. These interviews will occur on Thursday 27 April and then again on the Wednesday 3 May, from 3:30pm to 7:00pm. If your student/s are available, we are encouraging parents to bring them to the interviews this year. We are hoping that this will encourage a three-way conversation between teacher, parent and student and lead to increased student agency in their learning outcomes.
For tips and further information on Parent Teacher Interviews and how to book, please visit our Firefly page HERE. There will be Information booths set up around Dohler building to help you find your way quickly and efficiently to your interviews on the night.

Welcome Back To Primary Students
I am delighted to welcome you back to Term 2 of our college year. I trust that your Easter break was one filled with family and friends, and that rest and recuperation was a priority after a busy start to the year.
Staff in the Primary Years are excited about the Teaching Learning Program for this term and look forward to welcoming our students back with enthusiasm and love.
This term we welcome several new staff into the Primary Years. These educators come to us with a breadth of experience, and I know they will enhance both the Primary Years and the St Peters community. Welcome to Miss Catherine Robertson to Primary Years Music and Mr Lockie Burmas to Primary Years PE. Catherine comes to St Peters from The Lakes College, while Lockie worked with the Perceptual Motor Program in Lower Primary throughout Term 1. Mrs Sarah Hart and Mrs Rachael Crossley join our Exceptional Learners Department working with students in Lower Primary, while Mrs Jane Wilson will join the team in Upper Primary as the new Upper Primary Administrative Assistant.
We warmly welcome these new staff members and I know that you will join me in welcoming them into the St Peters Community.
Exciting Changes Primary Years Reporting in Years 1-6
As discussed during our Parent Information Evenings earlier this term, we are changing the way we report on student learning for children in Years 1-6. You would have received a flyer about these changes at your Parent Teacher interviews, however, if not, you can pick one up at either Lower Primary or Upper Primary Administration.
Why the change?
Currently, the End of Semester Report Cards, generated twice a year, provide feedback on the ACARA key learning areas; however, the timing of the feedback and the level of detail we can provide do not align with what research suggests is best practice. Teachers currently provide feedback to students throughout the term, but the visibility of this process for parents can be limited. Teachers then spend a significant amount of time generating comments for parents at the end of semester, however, these comments have a limited impact on student learning outcomes, as they are not able to be acted on in a timely way.
Educational research has consistently shown that teacher feedback has significant impact on student learning and achievement. By providing timely, specific, and actionable feedback, teachers can help students improve their performance. Secondly, this feedback when shared with parents allows a window into where your child is at and how you can support them in their learning. We want parents to know how to support their child with the next steps in their learning. To do this, we need to make some changes.
What will change?
While the End of Semester Reports will look very similar, there will be some important changes.
The front page will now include a reflection from the student alongside the Pastoral Comment provided by the child’s class teacher.
Levels of Achievement for each subject will now be more refined to indicate where your child sits within a band of achievement.
An effort grade will be displayed for each subject area.
There will be no teacher comment for each specific academic subject.
Instead of subject comments, parents will now be able to see ongoing feedback that is being offered to students as they are developing their skills and understanding.
Teacher feedback will be visible on identified posts/inclusions in your child’s digital portfolio or learning journal and parents will be notified of a new entry via blogs. Tags will be used to assist you to find the appropriate page/entry.
Paper based learning journals in Year 1 and Year 2 will now go home several times throughout the semester, so that parents can see the feedback.
Feedback will comprise of recognition of areas of success and importantly, identify next steps or areas of growth. These will be based on the subject learning goals teachers have identified.
Feedback will take different forms across subjects and year levels.
The portfolio will now become a more valuable source of information for parents about their child as a learner and their academic journey.
For more information navigating key St Peters online systems including Firefly, view the video (jump to the section called ‘Using Firefly in the Primary Years’) on this page.
In the meantime, teachers will start notifying parents through blogs when feedback has been provided to students on tasks or when learning journals are ready to go home for review and celebration. Please take the time to read the feedback with your child and to use the opportunity to engage in their learning.

Senior School Update
As we begin Term 2, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the progress made in Term 1 and set the focus for the term ahead. I also wanted to remind parents of our school's winter uniform policy, with blazers being required from Tuesday, 2 May.
First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude for your continued support and partnership in your student's education. Together, we have successfully completed the first term of the academic year, and I am proud of the effort and dedication our students have shown.
As you may be aware, the progress reports for Term 1 were recently released, and I urge you to review them thoroughly with your student. These reports provide valuable feedback on academic performance, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement. I encourage you to celebrate your child's achievements and have open conversations with them about their goals for the term ahead. Where possible, I encourage you to focus not only on the progress grade, but also on the attitudinal data provided. This information provides important insight into engagement in the classroom as well as effective use of time both in the school and home environment.
Reflecting on the progress reports, a number of students have shown remarkable improvement in their academics. I am also aware that our Senior School students have also excelled in extracurricular activities, such as Sports, Music, Arts and Community Service. I commend each student for their efforts and encourage them to build on their successes as we move into Term 2.
At the same time, I acknowledge that some students may have faced difficulties in Term 1, and their progress may not have met their or your expectations. Please know that our teachers and support staff are committed to providing the necessary assistance to help these students overcome any challenges and achieve their full potential. I urge you to work closely with our teachers to create a supportive learning environment at home and encourage your child to seek help when needed. Should you require any further advice on this, please don’t hesitate to contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator.
With the start of Term 2, it is important to set goals for the term ahead. I encourage you to discuss these goals with your student and help them create a plan to achieve them. Setting realistic and achievable goals can motivate students to stay focused, organised, and committed to their studies. Our teachers are also ready to provide guidance and support in setting and attaining these goals, so please do not hesitate to reach out to them.
In addition to academic goals, it is equally important to encourage students to maintain a healthy balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and personal time. Engage in open conversations with them about their social and emotional well-being and reassure them that it is okay to seek help and support when needed.
Lastly, I want to remind you of our school's winter uniform policy. With the arrival of some cooler mornings, students are now required to wear their winter school uniforms, including blazers, from Tuesday, 2 May. Please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed according to our uniform guidelines to maintain a professional and respectful appearance at school.
I am confident that with your support and our collaborative efforts, our students will continue to excel academically and personally in the term ahead. I encourage you to reflect on the progress made in Term 1, set goals for Term 2, and maintain open communication with our teachers and staff. Together, we can ensure a successful and fulfilling academic year for our students.
Thank you for your continued partnership, and I look forward to another term of growth and progress.

Soundscape 2023: A night at the PAC
An Extravaganza for the Senses
This innovative art project has become an annual program within the curriculum designed to offer students an experience in the interdisciplinary process of contemporary art making in response to music.
There were students who performed in both the Music and Art components of the event, experiencing sensory connections that evolve through the ambience of the Performing Arts Centre, music, sound and light. The audience have the rare privilege of observing an authentic development process as the artists build a collaborative image and resolve it.
Images exploring body drawing on the floor and mixed media painting on canvas were developed during a two hour period. This process is an exercise in working collaboratively, building layers and responding to marks and colours resulting in conceptual abstract works.
The canvases auctioned on the night as a fundraiser for the forthcoming music tours raised $1700.00.
Congratulations to IB Art students
Tabitha, Naomi, Adam, Ella, Grace, Georgia, Michaela, Mijili and QAA students Han and Alicia.
Student artworks created in class in the form of animations and short films projected during some of the music performances in concert one. Students experienced listening to sound and creating responses that enhanced the experience for the audience visually, adding new interpretations.
The original artworks will be on display at the Spectrum exhibition in May.
Congratulations to the Art and Music staff for realising this culturally rich collaboration. Thanks to Grantley Sutch for his impeccable planning.

A full update of these competitions together with some amazing individual achievements will be in next week’s Rock article.
As we now head into Term 2, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to and learn a little more about our 2023 Girls Sport Captains.
The girls were asked to answer a couple of questions!
Their favourite St Peters Sport memory
What it means to be one of our 2023 St Peters Girls Sport Captains
Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows – funny or embarrassing!
Girls Sport Captain – Remaya B
My most memorable Sporting moment occurred at the end of last year. In November of 2022, the St Peters Open Volleyball team played in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. We played in Grade 11 Division 1 and ended up winning the tournament. Our team constantly used teamwork to communicate around the court, we played every point with joy and persevered even if we were losing. It was so great to play and win a Gold medal with all my friends.
A Sports Captain's role means so much more than just a badge. It is a person who will encourage every St Peters player to give their best no matter what. A Sports Captain is a someone younger students can look up to. It is also a person who will represent the school positively in multiple events. I believe they also encourage everyone to constantly support their peers and stay healthy by being active. In this role, I really hope I can follow in the footsteps of past Sports Captains and become a role model and friend to everyone.
Something funny about me is when I was young, around 5 years old, I was putting clothes over my swimmers as I just finished a swimming lesson. As I started to put on the shorts my foot became stuck. This caused me to become unbalanced and slip on the wet floor of the changing room. I then fell chin first onto the top of a toilet seat and split my chin open. I still have the scar to this day!
Girls Sport Spirit Captain Annabel W
My favourite St Peters Sport memory is being a part of the Girls Football program. Every season is always full of fun and laughs. Being in teams with people from my grade as well as other grades. Making new friendships and winning is just a by-product.
Being one of the 2023 St Peters Girls Sport Captains is a great opportunity. My aim for the year is to create more spirit and awareness for girls’ sports, especially focus rounds. Moreover, I want to be someone all the girls (no matter their grade) can talk to as a friend and/or mentor.
Something funny/embarrassing about me was that last year I was walking down some stairs next to the gym looking at something on my phone. I thought I had reached the bottom of the stairs, so I took a step thinking I was going to land on the ground. Instead, I half landed on the bottom step and fell on my foot sideways. I heard it pop but I thought it was ok, because I had only fallen down one step. So surely, nothing bad had happened. But when I started walking, I couldn’t move my foot, so I took my shoe off and my foot was already swollen and bruised!! Turns out I fractured my foot in two places. So moral of the story do not walk down a set of stairs while on your phone or you will fracture your foot. Or maybe I just have weak bones…
Girls Sport Spirit Captain Karina H
My favourite sport memory at St Peters would have to be running in the QGSSSA Cross Country competition in Year 9. It was my first year of doing Cross Country, and I was really nervous to compete because I was one of the slower runners. Mid way through the race I really wanted to quit, I was already so tired, and I didn’t think I could make it to the end. However, it was my favourite memory because I remember the overwhelming amount of support and encouragement that I got from all the coaches, my friends and even runners from different schools. Everyone was cheering me on, and I finished the race (very slowly though 😊). Since that day, I have loved running and loved being a part of the St Peters Cross Country community.
Being a Girl’s Sport Captain, this year is a privilege and a great opportunity to give back to the St Peters sporting community. When I came to the school, participating in sports was such a good way for me to meet friends and stay active. So, being a Girl’s Sport Captain means a lot to me because I want to help encourage more girls to get involved in sport and to make the most of the extensive sporting opportunities that St Peters has to offer.
The most embarrassing thing that happened to me was when my dad entered me into a Gymnastics Masterclass in the holidays, but he entered me in the 7-8 age group instead of the level 7-8. I was 14 at the time and I showed up really excited about the master class, but I was also a bit nervous because I didn’t know anyone. After he dropped me off, I noticed that I was about double the height of every other girl there and everyone looked like they were in Prep. I asked my dad to pick me up, but he told me to join in because he already paid for it. So, I spent four hours doing a gymnastics master class with 7 year old’s and all the coaches thought I was extremely tall for my age because I didn’t want to tell anyone that I was 14! I learnt a very valuable lesson that day and now I always ask my Mum to sign me up for things!

While the lights were to be installed over the Easter school holidays, unfortunately there was a delay due to extra building requirements that were not anticipated at the start of the project. We anticipate the lights will be installed in the coming months and will provide updates as information becomes available. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please contact the Tennis Support Group at: l.marshall@stpeters.qld.edu.au
