The second term has kicked off at a frantic pace in the Senior School with students settling quickly into classroom work and cocurricular seasons.
ANZAC Ceremony
Wednesday morning saw the annual whole of College ANZAC Ceremony held in the Chapel forecourt. Mr Kotzur paid reverence to the sacrifices of the many soldiers that have come before us and reminded us that we are indeed lucky to live in this wonderful country that so many have fought to protect.
As always, I was thoroughly impressed with the respect and attention shown by all students through this ceremony. It reminds me of the importance of such ceremonies which not only galvanise and perpetuate our values as a College but also contribute to our National identity. Lest we forget.
Senior School Studies Workshops
Students will have now received Term 1 Academic progress reports. As they reflect on both the academic results and attitudinal grades, we encourage everyone to reflect on both your successes, as well as potential areas of improvement. The terminology we continue to use in our discussions with students reflects the pursuit of ongoing academic growth/improvement and striving for ‘personal bests’. We aspire for all students to be working to their fullest potential as our “Plus Ultra” motto suggests.
Starting early this term, we are offering additional workshops to support student engagement and learning (emails sent to all parents this week explaining further). These Senior School Study Skills Workshops are designed to assist students who may require additional skills in areas such as organisation, time management, goal setting, effective study techniques, preparing for oral presentations, learning and memory, using technology and enhancing wellbeing during peak assessment times.
These workshops are in addition to the programs already delivered during Academic Care and Wellbeing time, as well as subject specific study skills taught in academic classes.
DATES: Commencing Term 2 Week 2 (Tuesday 30 April 2019)
TIME: 7.30am - 7.55am
LOCATION: PAC Theatrette
COURSE INFORMATION: 6 x Sessions (Email of topics sent home on Tuesday this week). “Crunchtime Craziness” will be delivered to each cohort at a Year Level meeting in Week 5.
All Senior School students are eligible to register to the workshops, however selected students may be individually invited to the program by Teachers or Year Level Coordinators based on their previous academic results, attitudinal grades and GPA trends.
Holiday Tours
Three sports tours occurred over the holiday break including a Football tour of Europe, Boys Rowing tour to Bundaberg and Rugby camp at Ironbark and in the boarding house. Congratulations to all players and staff who participated in these events. It was great to see the many photos and hear the great stories of student growth that came from these occasions. Good luck to all teams as seasons kick off in the coming weeks.
Congratulations also to St Peters Swimming Club who won their 5th National Championship in a row (by a record margin). Special mention to swimmers Jenna F, Michaela R and Mollie O who made the Australian Junior swim teams.
RYDA
Year 11 Lifeskills students will next week take part in the RYDA Safe Driving Course. This course is one of three separate units (one each year from 10-12) that students in the Senior School can interact with in preparation for our students to take to the roads as informed young adults.
At RYDA, students attend six interactive sessions at school over their Lifeskills and AC & W class lessons. In small peer groups, they are challenged to change the way they think about road safety by participating in a stopping distance demonstration, devising personalised driving strategies, gaining an understanding of their individual risk profile, leading an investigation into a real life crash and getting tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. The RYDA course gives students critical information and strategies that do not come from driving lessons, books or the school classroom.
Winter Uniform Changes
A reminder that the winter uniform will be worn from Week 3 of this term. This gives families another week off to dust off the school blazer, young men should check that their trousers still fit and also refresh how to tie a windsor knot.
