As of Tuesday 3 May, it will be compulsory for students in Years 7 to 12 to wear their blazer and formal hat to and from school. Wearing of the PE uniform to and from school is not permitted (however, students with before and after school sport training are permitted to wear the appropriate Sport uniform).
Students in Upper Primary are to wear their blazer and formal hat to and from school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
No movie theatre would be complete without some great love story, perhaps the latest rom-com by Richard Curtis (ever thought of a Love Actually sequel?). Many of us, whether we openly admit it, love the feel-good, hopeful assurance that love is a thing in our lives…that “love actually is all around”, if I can quote Hugh Grant from that movie (yes, Chaplain Kirstin has probably watched the movie too many times).
I’ve been thinking about stories, how they impact us and how various stories weave together into a coherent whole. I began to realise that in many ways life is very like the structure of Love Actually, with many stories weaving in and around and together. These stories finally come together and culminate in the greatest story ever told, perhaps the greatest love story ever told – not exactly a rom-com, a story in a book that’s perhaps a bit too long to make into a two hour movie.
The Bible can be called God’s story, the story of God’s relationship with all people. The story begins with God’s creation of the universe and people, and how God lives in relationship with his people. The Old Testament goes on to reveal the story of God’s relationship with his chosen people, the Israelites. God’s relationship with people is revealed as God calls the Israelites into relationship and provides them with rules for living with God and each other. The stories also reveal the nature of people as they desire for relationship with God, break this relationship and fall away from God and then in times of need return to their relationship with God. Throughout these stories God’s faithfulness, love for and forgiveness of his people remains.
The New Testament contains the story of God present in the world with people, in Jesus. In Jesus, God reveals the plan for completely restoring the broken relationship between God and people, a plan that came to fruition with the Easter resurrection. The New Testament contains the stories about Jesus and letters for Jesus’ followers who live out their relationship with God in lives of love and service.
The Bible links together the way in which God revealed himself to his people in the Old Testament, at the time of Christ, and still reveals himself today. It is the story which enabled our school to be built, and the story that continues to weave through our stories here. This is the story that impacts on the way we live here at school and impacts our spiritual lives too.

As part of the IB Diploma, students take ‘Theory of Knowledge' (TOK), which explores questions about knowledge and the process of knowing. TOK emphasises comparisons and connections between the different subject areas and encourages students to be more aware of their own perspectives and the perspectives of others.
In Year 12, TOK students have to write a 1,600 word essay in response to a prescribed titles. The 2022 prescribed titles were released at the end of Term 1. Students this year are writing their essays on one of the following titles:
Last Friday 22 April, our TOK teachers held a workshop to help the Year 12 students unpack their chosen prescribed title. Students worked collaboratively in groups to develop claims and counter claims for their title, considering different areas of knowledge and real-life examples. They did this with the guidance of a range of teachers from different subject areas to help extend their thinking and perspective. Students then completed a ‘gallery walk’ where individually students could read and reflect on the different claims and counter claims and offer additional suggestions, they could also collect ideas for their own essays.
Thanks must go to our TOK teachers, Mr David Meredith, Mr Kerry Hasell and Mr Hugh Atherton for all their efforts guiding our students through the workshop and running the sessions. Additional thanks go to Mrs Vanessa Cassard, Mrs Suzannah Hall, Mr Michael Burke, Mrs Olivia Larney and Mrs Julie Seidel for their giving up their time to share their subject area expertise and to help the groups develop their arguments.
It was wonderful to see families and teachers connecting at Years 7-12 Parent Teacher Interviews last night. This is the first of two evenings for our Years 7 -12 parents, the second evening being held next Thursday 5 May. Thank you to our Junior High Leaders who assisted and provided support to our families on the night. For tips and further information on Parent Teacher Interview, please visit our Firefly page here.
It is hard to believe but our Year 12 students are already looking at university placements. Some universities require an academic transcript in addition to school reports. Students who require an academic transcript for early university applications are welcome to request these through the Academic Hub. Please allow a two-week turnaround for these documents to be completed (where possible).

Congratulations to all students who participated in last Friday’s Cross Country events on Mayer Oval. It was fantastic to see the students so determined to finish the race and collect points for their House. As our staff repeatedly teach the students, it is fantastic to see our amazingly talented runners take out the top places on the day, but it is just as admirable to see the students who know they are not the greatest runners, showing great grit and determination.
Congratulations to all participants, the staff for their support, the Year 6 Leaders for instilling their enthusiasm and parents who supported the event. Special thanks must go to Mr Peter Dawson and Mr Orhan Memedovski for their excellent organisation and continued commitment to students in the Primary Years.

In Week 4, students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will participate in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). These tests will be held from 10 - 13 May, 2022.
The NAPLAN tests assess a variety of skills essential for students: reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end of term test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These are skills that should be continuously developed throughout the year and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN.
NAPLAN tests are conducted online, with the exception of the Year 3 writing test, which will be completed as a paper-based test. It is important that students are prepared and ready for this so that their technology does not cause any stress.
At home you can support by doing the following:
If your child is sick on any of the days of NAPLAN, please do not send them to school. They are unlikely to not perform at their best if they are unwell. Catch-up assessments will be completed, so please ensure that they are well enough to attend school before they return.
If you have any further questions or concerns about NAPLAN please speak to your child’s teacher or send an email to s.mitchell@stpeters.qld.edu.au. You can also read more about it here.

Bonus anxiety webinar with Dr Justin Coulson: Helping your child with anxiety
Last year, as a speaker, Helping your child with anxiety was Dr Justin Coulson's most in-demand topic, not only at schools but also in workplaces. Sadly, the trend continues this year and there is no surprise as anxiety has become one of the leading causes of ill-health in our children. It’s also affecting more parents than ever before. So, this term, Justin is giving your school and parent community a bonus webinar around anxiety and how to help your child.
Attend this webinar for parents at no charge
Anxiety has become one of the leading causes of ill-health in our children. And it’s also affecting more parents than ever before. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated what was already an accelerating problem.
Can we stop anxiety? Where is it coming from? Are our kids bubble-wrapped snowflakes that just need to 'toughen up' and get over it? Or is there an approach to our children’s anxiety that can build them, encourage them, and give them hope?
This webinar will provide the answers every parent needs to help their children – and even to help themselves.
Over the course of an hour, Dr Justin Coulson will help you to:
Once you’ve participated in this webinar, you’ll have strategies that you can put into practice on the spot to help curb anxiety, build confidence, and restore resilience in your child. And if you struggle with anxiety yourself, you’ll be changed.
This webinar will be held on Wednesday 4 May 2022 at 8:00pm - 9:00pm AEST.
Redeem your webinar now - it's easy
This offer is valid until 4 August 2022. If you’re unable to make the broadcast time, just register anyway and you will get access to the recording.
A special thank you to the staff and students who were involved in organising and participating in the Anzac service held at school last Friday, and to those that represented the College on Anzac Day. This service is an important time for our students and wider College community as we pause to remember and reflect on the great sacrifices that were made for our freedom today.
A reminder that the winter uniform is required for Terms 2 and 3. From next week, this includes wearing the blazer to and from school each day, along with the formal hat and formal uniform. When an unforeseen uniform issue arises students are encouraged to speak with their Year Level Coordinator as early as possible to ensure that we can help them to resolve the issue. Students will be reminded of this at Year Level Meetings and the Senior School Assembly, and we thank you for your continued support in assisting students to meet the uniform expectations.
The upcoming Parent/Teacher interviews are an excellent opportunity to connect with your child’s classroom teachers, and we look forward to meeting many parents at these evenings. We value partnering with parents to support students through their senior schooling years. If you have concerns for your child’s progress in a particular class the best contact is the class teacher in the first instance. When concerns are across a variety of subjects or are more complex, it is appropriate to contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator for further assistance.
On Monday 25 April, St Peters Symphonic Winds and Drumline were honoured and privileged to be involved once again in the ANZAC Day Parade through Brisbane City. The students represented their school with great professionalism, dedication and commitment, marching behind banner holders, Meg B and Cherise M and lead by student Drum Major Thomas R. This performance was the culmination of months of rehearsal, memorisation and marching practice through the school grounds.
The band then followed up with a repeat performance at the Brookfield Showgrounds to commemorate the 2022 Shell Green 20/20 Cricket Match. Whilst the game was washed out due to inclement weather, the St Peters Marching Band still took to the field with Jacob D and Charlie H as banner holders to entertain the crowd during the exhibition match. Jazz Combo also entertained the crowds from the bleachers and Drumline closed the event with a spirited drum battle.
Thank you to Ms Chou, Mr Jacobson and Mr Pradella in assisting the students to memorise their music and march with precision and dignity and Ms Saffery for making sure the students presented in immaculate uniform. Thanks also to Mr Gilfedder for his incredible photographic skills attached to this article and our Social Media pages.
A sincere thank you to our incredibly supportive families and all the members of Symphonic Winds and Drumline for their tireless efforts in preparing for such an important occasion. This year St Peters presented our largest and most professional group of some 80 musicians. It was a great honour to once again be invited to march in the parade and a privilege to have Mr Tim Kotzur march alongside with us.
Please check out our social media accounts for fabulous photos and videos from our staff and parent photographers.

Round 4 Wrap
Last Friday our Round 4 results were mixed, some great wins, some teams were hurt badly by COVID protocols and injures but when the girls hit the courts, they did themselves proud. Our Open team, for FOCUS Round had amazing support in the stands and were impressive against a much-improved BGGS team. Senior A, their first game of the season and Coach Stephen just got them across the line in a close one. Senior B1 were missing many players, they got the W, Coach Matt says they have work to do! 10A in a shortened game due to BGGS arriving late with bus issues got over the line by 2, great work girls and Coach Orhan. 10B battled hard against a strong BGGS team, 9A, disappointing as they had only 5 players with Ironbark, sickness and injury, they would have won this game by 20 with their full team. 9B were disappointing with many girls missing unexplained, we hope this does not happen again, the four girls (& thanks Madi for filling in) that did play were amazing and they went down by one! 8A got up by four in a close one, we are excited for this team, 8B did great, these girls are awesome, their attendance at training is fantastic! 7A, we are also excited for this team, they had a good win and our 7B White girls try hard, most have never played before. We must mention Georgia B & Emily McK for their amazing spirit in the 7B team.
Good luck Girls for Round 5 v Somerville House.

Round 4 Wrap
Round 4 saw St Peters take on BGGS in some action-packed matches last Friday evening. The Junior A squad put up a big fight against a very tough opponent, going down 0-2. A special shoutout goes to Lily D who has shown tremendous leadership by maintaining a positive mindset and giving a huge effort right until the final whistle. St Peters Intermediate team had a 2-0 victory and looked very sharp maintaining possession for a large portion of the game. The Senior A team came away with a convincing 5-0 victory and looked very dominant throughout. A great effort by Charlotte and Caitlin who both put away two goals each. The Senior B team had a 2-1 win and have shown huge improvement across the board. The Open girls were missing a number of players due to injury and unforeseen circumstances and unfortunately went down 2-4. A huge well done to April F for stepping into the squad and demonstrating that she can have a big impact with the Open’s girls. Well done to all teams!
Good luck Girls for Round 5 v Somerville House.

Round 4 Wrap
Not to be outdone, Round 4 provided myriad challenges to navigate. On behalf of the Touch Football program, we would like to thank Mrs Champion for spending copious hours finding us playing fields and Mr Martin and Mr Lohe for marking the fields with cones so that we could play. A Public Holiday, Pupil Free Day, COVID-19, other illnesses, injury, rescheduled representative training, tuition, special events and delayed returns to school combined to deplete our teams and coaching stocks, and yet, thanks to the outstanding commitment and character of our girls and coaches we managed to field teams for every game. A special thank you to Aidan McGuire and Eddie Downing-Brown for coaching several teams throughout the week and on Friday. As the final hooter sounded on Friday evening, only our Senior Bs needed to forfeit their game because they used players that had already played in other teams, yet another example of what outstanding young women we have in our Touch program. Thank you to those players, many of whom were boarders, as well as Imogen J and Paige F who played a one-off game to ensure we could field our Senior B team.
Congratulations to our Senior As, 9As, 8As and 7Bs on terrific wins. Special mention must also be made of our 10As who managed a 2-all draw, despite having only seven players (six players are on the field at one time) for the entire game; an inspiring effort.
As we will now be playing all our games offsite, can Mrs Byrne and I ask that Parents/Caregivers complete the Google Form (the link is provided in our weekly email) so that we have accurate rolls, allowing us to efficiently load buses and leave the campus on time? The Form is required to be completed by ALL students, even boarders, and students that can’t play that week. We apologise that the email was late last week; we will seek to distribute it much earlier this week. Again, can students email either Miss George or Mrs Byrne if they will be absent from training and/or games? Thank you to all girls that have been diligent in this regard.

We currently have several reunions being planned for later in the year. Keep an eye on our social media sites or contact the SPOSA Office if you are a past student celebrating a milestone year.
Boarders of Finger House reunited in April to celebrate their continued sisterhood and lasting friendships. The ladies present said that, '30 years apart felt like 30 minutes'. Such are the timeless memories and friendships formed by girls living together. "When people suggest that my time at boarding school must have been dreadful, I laugh. It was like a five year slumber party!"
The reunion was celebrated with lunch at Rico's Restaurant at the Eagle Street Pier in April. Many of those present are excited at plans for their whole year to gather and celebrate their 30th Reunion in September, 2022.
