Teaching and Learning is the central Strategic Pillar of the College’s Strategic Intent ‘Plus Ultra 2025’. The Intent of this Pillar is to ‘enable excellence in learning, every day, in every learning experience, for every learner, for life’. This year in order to action this key Intent the College is undertaking four Strategic Initiatives:
Develop and embed the St Peters Teaching and Learning Framework that was developed in 2021 within the Secondary School;
Increase student agency in their learning through implementing practices that explicitly make learning visible for students; and foster the development of key learning dispositions (critical, creative and self-regulated thinking) and metacognition in students;
Institute a Prep to Year 12 approach to data analytics to inform targeted teaching practice and improve student learning; and,
Foster Communities of Practice to enable teachers to better collaborate, share and learn from each other.
These four Strategic Initiatives were chosen because they are high impact. A Teaching and Learning Framework results in teachers and students using high impact strategies more frequently in their classes. Using data helps teachers to know their students better, what their learning strengths are, where the gaps are in their learning and where to take their students next in their learning. Communities of Practice is about embedding Teacher Professional Learning in their daily work so that they are continuing to grow and refine their practices to become better teachers. While Student Agency is about providing students with approaches to empower them in their learning and enable them to be better and more successful learners.
Ultimately through our Strategic Actions in this Pillar we are aiming to fulfil the aspirational St Peters ‘Why’ - ‘that every child learns every day’.

Mums – Doing God’s Work
“Be careful in the mush pool!” Mum called out as we headed out the door to see a band at a Melbourne hotel. I think Mum meant mosh-pit, but it was close enough, we got the message.
Mum was always concerned for our wellbeing. At times she was a bit over-protective, a bit of a worrier, but we always knew this was one way she showed her love for us. As her children moved into adulthood and away from her and Dad, she would continue to check in on us. She seemed particularly concerned that in Queensland we would be swept up in a cyclone, inundated by floods, fried by the sun or consumed by a crocodile!
Mum died last year. One of the things I have missed since has been her check-ins. During the floods this year, when it was raining for days on end, there was no phone call to ask if we were okay and checking that we hadn’t been washed away. There was no concern about the 'mush pool'. Grief has many triggers.
Mums have a lifetime task of loving and caring for their children. It starts even before birth, even before conception, when the idea of a child first comes to mind. It continues for the rest of life.
When God sent Jesus to the world he chose Mary to be his mother. Mary, even in her youth and inexperience, was chosen to become the mother of our Saviour. God clearly thought Mary capable, even if Mary would surely have had moments of uncertainty, if not doubt. Mary would do God’s work of raising Jesus, who would become the Saviour of the world.
For Mary, seeing the wonder that was Jesus’ life would have been the most amazing experience. But seeing his death would have been agonising. The prophet, Simeon, had said to Mary, upon meeting the baby Jesus, “A sword will pierce your own soul too.” Is this not an accurate description of watching the suffering and death of your child?
Every day mums share in the joys and sorrows of their children. Every day mums need the grace of God to sustain them as they support their children. Every day God gives mums the capacity to continue to love and care for their children, in whatever form that takes. God delights in helping and supporting Mums as they raise their children, because as they do, they do God’s work.
We thank God for our mums!

Relationships within the PERMAH framework
In Term 1 this article series discussed how Positive emotions and Engagement are critical factors for our wellbeing. The third pillar in the PERMAH Framework is Relationships. As social beings, we are made to live in community with one another and have a desire to connect with other people. These interactions allow us to feel supported and loved.
Well-established relationships can contribute to feeling more optimistic about the future, help people recover from mental illnesses, increase workplace productivity, give people a greater sense of purpose, reduce stress levels and enhance communication skills. Beyond having relationships with others, also under this pillar is having a good relationship with ourselves. What is your self-talk like? Are you encouraging yourself or putting yourself down? According to research, the ideal negative to positive ratio is 1:5, so for every negative comment made we should give 5 positive ones. Do we treat others this way? Do we treat ourselves this way? What difference would it make if we worked towards this healthier mix.
Suggestions for enhancing relationships in your home include:
Taking an interest in other people – making a concerted effort to find out more about a family member, friend, colleague or acquaintance.
Sharing good news with family or friends and celebrating their successes when they share good news with you.
Allocating chunks in your weekly schedule for quality time and using this time to maintain connections with loved ones.
Encouraging your child to reach out to a family member that they have not spoken to in a while.
Inviting someone over for a meal.
Developing a 'Shout out' board at home where family members can write down positive things that others have done for them.

Our teachers have been working with students to familiarise them with the types of questions and technical knowledge required for the online NAPLAN assessments.
Parents/carers can help their child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program and reminding them on the day to simply do their best.
As all tests will be conducted online, it is important to be aware of the following:

Primary Years News
Mother’s Day Breakfast
The Primary Years had the pleasure of celebrating Mother’s Day by sharing breakfast and Chapel with our students and their mums yesterday. It is such a lovely way to start the day and I would like to especially thank Mrs Hall-Smith, Mrs Staples and Mrs George for their expert organisation of this event. Thanks to Chaplain Kirstin and the students of 2B who led us for our Chapel Service following the yummy breakfast. Also, my gratitude goes to our student helpers - we very much appreciate your support and involvement. I hope all our Mums have a wonderful day on Sunday.
Parents and Pedagogical Partners
We are delighted to welcome parents back into the Primary Years, recently hosting Learning Walks in both Prep and Year 1.
These mornings are a wonderful opportunity for our parents to see learning in action and to assist them in their understanding to support their child. I am very grateful for the openness of our Prep and Year 1 teams as they provide such an opportunity to our community.
Activities such as these Learning Walks provide parents with a lens to capture and understand our primary pedagogy, which is founded on active, hands-on inquiry. Staff in the Primary Years are currently engaging with several initiatives linked to the College’s Strategic Intent Plus Ultra 2025, one of which encourages the continued development of our parent community as pedagogical partners, it reads: To engage parents in their child’s learning and wellbeing through an active process of consultation, collaboration and education.
Stay tuned for various opportunities to engage with the Primary Years in developing an already strong partnership with our parent community.
Parent Volunteer Induction Sessions
Parent Volunteer Induction Sessions are designed to provide parents with vital information regarding College policies and procedures for when they are working with students in the classroom and around the College. At these sessions we cover topics including student protection, duty of care, confidentiality, and classroom etiquette. It is mandatory that all volunteers take part in the 2022 induction program prior to assisting at the College.
We will be hosting two more sessions this term, and these will be held in Belfield Hall on Friday 6 May At 8.40am and 2.30pm.
Senior School
Senior School News
The Academic Care and Wellbeing program is well underway for the term with each cohort in the Senior School focusing on an important aspect of wellbeing to support flourishing at school. The outline below provides an overview for each year level this term.
Year 10
The Year 10 program for Term 2 focuses on the theme of 'What is my purpose?'. This concept is underpinned by using information from the Natural Abilities testing, career tasks and discussing academic pathways for students as they prepare for subject selections next term.
Additionally, the cohort will be involved in a presentation and workshop led by a guest speaker from Unleashing Personal Potential who will guide students in activities to help form strong connections as part of supporting positive relationships.
Year 11
The Year 11 Academic Care and Wellbeing focus for this term is on developing and understanding theoretical and practical components of leadership. This term’s unit prepares students for the upcoming leadership selection process as the students begin to think about the areas of College life they would like to lead as they approach the final year of school. The program extends students’ thinking on servant leadership using their gifts and talents.
Year 12
The program allows time for students together with their Form Class teachers to have 'important conversations' on all manner of topics as they prepare for life after Year 12. In particular, the cohort will hear from a guest speaker, Melissa McGuinness this term under the program of 'You Choose - Youth Road Safety'. The aim of the talk is to help students think about road safety and advocate for personal accountability of young drivers. Additionally, students will continue with memory making activities this term, including compiling contributions to the Senior Magazine.

Our Year 7 girls fought hard, the 7A team going down by three in a close one and the 7B team Maroon team giving their all.
