"The World cannot be understood without numbers, and it cannot be understood with numbers alone. Love numbers for what they tell you about real lives". Dr Hans Rosling, former Swedish Physician & Academic
A key strategy of the Teaching & Learning Strategic Pillar of our Strategic Intent Plus Ultra 2025 is to ‘Institute a Prep to Year 12 approach to data analytics to inform targeted teaching practice and improve student learning’.
As part of the implementation of this strategic initiative, the College will be working with Dr Selina Fisk to help empower teachers and leaders in their use of data to enhance the learning of our students. Dr Fisk was the 2019 Australian Council of Educational Leaders New Voice Scholar. One of the reasons the College sought out Dr Fisk to assist with the implementation of this strategic initiative is that she is an advocate for being data-informed, rather than data-driven. Being data-informed is based on an understanding that data will inform rather than drive decision-making because there are rational, political, and moral elements in decision-making and data is only one important element in the process. Being data-informed leads to powerful feedback and conversations with teachers and students that ultimately results in improvement. It is the power of the conversation that can so positively impact students and their learning. Being data-informed helps teachers to better understand each student’s story, where they are at in their learning and where to take them next.
Centre for Learning & Innovation
The Centre for Learning and Innovation Project remains on track. Here is an updated fly through of this exciting project that is a key strategy in strengthening our learning culture and helping our students become successful lifelong and life-wide learners who through their learning are empowered to lead and serve their community.

In the Bible, God says: As a mother comforts her child, I will comfort you (Isaiah 66:12,13). Mothers have a special place in our hearts – there is no doubt that it’s one of the biggest and most comprehensive jobs anyone can do. Mother’s day is only one day in the year while being a mother is more than a full-time occupation, but it gives us a chance to say a big thanks. Here’s a song from an unknown writer, but I think it could be from any of us:
Thank you Jesus for my mum She’s my hero, she’s my chum And thank you for the times to come Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Cheers me up when I am glum Helps with homework (does my sums) Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Keeps me clean and fills my tum Cleans my sneakers (though they hum) Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Cuddled me when I was young Changed my diaper, cleaned my bum Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
Thank you Jesus for my mum Thinks I'm an angel (but she's wrong) Sees my good points, when there's none Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you mum
What more can I say, except to leave you with a special blessing:
May the blessing of the Divine Be an especially bright benediction Upon mothers everywhere On your blessed day - On Mother's Day!
God bless.

Last week Sarah, a young volunteer from Rosies - Friends on the Street, came to the College speak to the Senior students about how this organisation assists the Homeless.
They have 14 branches throughout Queensland run by volunteers to offer friendship and a sense of belonging to those in need. They are committed, whatever the weather, to provide a cuppa, a bite to eat and other basic support. Young people can volunteer and give time to helping this organisation.
The Social Justice Group feel passionately about supporting Rosies and to help raise funds, they are promoting Give A Hand by running a Handball Competition in the Gym from Tuesday 11 to Friday 14 May.
Senior students can sign up to participate via email donating a gold coin. Meanwhile Junior High students a welcome to come along and support them and buy some lollies and drinks.
They can also help by donating the following items to either Junior or Senior Reception:
Tubes of Shaving Cream
Cordial
Cups of Noodles
Light Sleeping Bags/Blankets.
The final of the Handball Competition will be on Friday 14 May with prizes for the winners!

Langer Library Student Book Club
Launched last Thursday during lunchtime, the Junior High & Senior School Student Book Club is open to all students from Years 7 to 12.
Attracting many enthusiastic students, this initial meet-and-greet session allowed them to discuss how they see the organisation of their Book Club and what they expected from it. It was also a fantastic opportunity to get to know each other and cross year levels. And to sum up, students also worked collaboratively on the creation of a 'Banned Books' display in the upstairs section.
Meeting every Thursday Week B during lunch time (from 1pm), at the Langer Library, our next session will involve the 'Skulduggery Series'.
Everyone is welcome: see you on Thursday Week B !
INDIGENOUS CULTURAL IMMERSION RED CENTRE 2021
St Peters wants to continue to empower through interactions and learning by being part of one of the world’s oldest living cultures by offering students from both the Springfield and Indooroopilly Campus an Immersion opportunity. Learning from, valuing and working with Indigenous Australians is part of St Peters’ history and present. As a service learning opportunity, this Immersion would provide students with both something that is an integral part of what it means to be Australian as well as being an opportunity for students to experience something amazing.
If your child loved Ironbark they will LOVE this journey. Many of the areas we visit cannot be accessed unless you are invited by the traditional owners, it is literally a once in a lifetime journey. It also satisfies portions of the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh award and the CAS requirement of the IB program.
This opportunity is being offered to students who are currently in Years 10 and 11. Group minimum size is 18, but this is also the maximum number of 22. This is to not overwhelm the schools and homelands visited as remote communities are small. Students will be chosen on a first come first served basis, however there can be a waiting list also. The cost is inclusive of flights, camping equipment, all meals and beverages, permits, park entry fees, transfers, coach travel and Indigenous guides. The dates are for September 20-29, this is during the school holidays. Our guides have remote and wilderness first aid qualifications. We will carry remote first aid, and satellite phone.
You can read more about the experience in this brochure.
The total cost is $4,100.
Initial deposit: $1,025 (25%) due by Wednesday 9 June, 2021
Second payment: $1,025 (25%) due by Wednesday 7July, 2021
Balance $2,050 (50%) due by Wednesday 11 August, 2021
Should we not get enough students to participate the deposit will also be refunded. Should the trip be cancelled due to COVID-19, the deposit would be held as a credit until we could reschedule the trip if all companies and carriers can provide it. Deposits will not be refunded if the trip is cancelled due to COVID-19 either by an external organisation or the College.
If you have any questions you are of course welcome to contact myself, Ms Ingrid Rucinski with any queries.
Our second Parent Teacher Interview session will be held tonight for parents of Years 7-12 students. Many thanks to all the families that attend last week, we trust that this is a helpful and enriching evening for both parents and teachers. Thank you to the parents that provided feedback to assist in streamlining the booking process for future. Whilst there is never a one size fits all solution, it is great to work with families to maximise the benefits of the evening.
A huge thank you to our volunteer leaders from Junior High and Senior School, who manned the ‘HelpDesk’ for the evening. Students greeted families and assisted with directions to various classrooms. It is a very busy night for all and having students to help families navigate their way around is a great help. Thank you students!
Student Success
During the recent school holidays, Bond University held a Year 12 Mathematics extension program. Our Year 12 student Thomas F attended the course and achieved a fantastic result of a CREDIT.
Dr Silvia Dimarco, the Coordinator of the Mathematics program, gave some wonderful feedback and praise to Thomas for his efforts. “The academic component of the program involved students learning how to use the R program (most for the first time) and then applying their knowledge of matrices to solve a problem using R. The program was pitched at a high level and students displayed resilience and adaptability – Thomas was a fine ambassador for your school. Congratulations to you and the mathematics teachers at your school for all their great work.”
Congratulations Thomas and to the Mathematics team at St Peters.

Mother’s Day Breakfast
Tomorrow morning it is our pleasure to celebrate Mother’s Day by sharing breakfast with our Junior High students and their mums. It is such a lovely way to start the day and I’d like to especially thank Mrs Alison Arnold and Mrs Sharman Bolton for organising this event. Also, thanks go to our student helpers, our hospitality students and their teachers as well as our musicians – we very much appreciate your support and involvement. I hope all our mothers have a wonderful day on Sunday.
House Shirts
This week students in Junior High have been notified that we have been given permission to trial the wearing of House Shirts with HPE uniform on Fridays Week A. This includes wearing the House Shirt with HPE uniform to and from school. In order for this trial to be successful we need 100% participation from students and all aspects of their HPE uniform to be correct. Students can wear the tracksuit pants and jacket when cold.
Kaleidoscope – A lesson in perseverance
It is at this stage of the rehearsal schedule that fatigue starts to kick in and students struggle with the relentlessness of rehearsals. We value the support of our parents as we progress through this stage. There are times during the later stages in rehearsals where students will spend time sitting around and waiting. This is kept to a minimum but it is a reality of this phase of the rehearsal process as the plotting of cues for lighting, sounds and scene changes occurs. Students are advised to bring work with them so that during these times they can occupy themselves productively. Alternatively, they can use the time rehearsing their lines or going through the dance moves in their heads.
One of the great learnings that comes from being involved in a theatrical production such as this is the development of perseverance during the ‘not so fun’ stages of the rehearsals. Not every step of the process is fun but it helps if they keep their eye on the goal.
I would ask parents to check the rehearsal schedule carefully as we work through these final weeks. At this stage of the process every time a single child is away it makes a difference to the smooth running of the rehearsal.
Thank you to all the staff and parent volunteers who are helping to get the show ready and well done to all the students involved for your energy and enthusiasm for this Year 8 event.
Kaleidoscope Ushers
We are looking for students to volunteer to be ushers on the evening of the production. Permission letters can be collected from Junior High Reception.
As a College our number one priority is to provide a safe environment for our students. However, students also have a part to play in acting responsibly and students are continually reminded of the need to ‘think before they act in order to consider how their actions impact on others’. In particular students have been reminded about respecting each other’s personal space, belongings and physical rights.
This is part of creating an environment where treating others with care, dignity and respect is not only an expectation but the ‘norm’. Young people are heavily influenced by the media and St Peters students are not immune. Unfortunately, teenagers sometimes forget that the language and behaviours we see on the screen or hear in music are manufactured and very often completely the opposite of what is acceptable in the real world and certainly considered unacceptable in a school environment.
We understand that young people’s brains are still developing and this often results in poor decision making, however students are also aware of the boundaries in which we must operate at St Peters. We will continue this conversation with students.
Does your child catch public transport to school?
Students are reminded that when in uniform they are representing the College and that their actions and language reflect on all at the College. This particularly applies to students using public transport to and from school. We support Translink’s expectation that ‘school students give up their seats to adults who are standing’. It is disappointing that over the last few weeks we have had complaints from members of the public regarding our students not doing the right thing on public transport. This has been addressed on Assembly.
REMINDER - Keeping belongings safe and secure
Please remind your child of the need to keep their belongings safe and locked in their locker. Twice in the last week students have reported to Reception asking for the security camera footage to be reviewed as they believed something had gone missing from their ‘unlocked’ locker. In both cases it was a false alarm and the item had never actually made it to their locker – they’d left it in their classroom. Staff are always keen to help but it is somewhat frustrating spending time following these matters up when the locker should be kept locked at all times.

Last Saturday we started off our Term 2 AIC Sports with Round 1 versus Padua College. I can confidently say how very proud of our young men of St Peters Lutheran College. Congratulations each and every boy who represented our College on Friday evening at Chess and/or on Saturday participating in Rugby or Football. It was so great to see such positive enthusiasm and such great support being shown both on and off the playing field.
Congratulations to both our Years 7 to 12 Chess and Football teams who ‘won the day’ against Padua. It would be remiss of me to not to also acknowledge the courage, tenacity and enthusiasm of all our Rugby teams. The ‘never say die’ attitude was so ever present, particularly in the First XV game whereby our boys fought to the very last minute in what was a tightly contested game. This attitude, for me, optimises our College’s motto of Plus Ultra.
With Round 2 approaching us this weekend, we need to ensure that we are well prepared and ready to play with the same enthusiasm and attitude that was present last Saturday.
I would like to encourage all the St Peters community to get around our boys sporting teams and come along and support on Saturday 8 May. Let’s make St Peters sport even greater and positively celebrate what a fantastic job all our boys and their coaches are doing in 2021.

We request everyone to please check the St Peters App for game times and details. Please also check the App for any cancellations.

2021 AIC Cross Country & Runners Club
The 2021 AIC Championships will be held on Wednesday 2 June at Curlew Park, Sandgate. As our training now starts to fully focus on these championships with just over three weeks left to prepare. We really encourage all boys who wish to be included in the 2021 St Peters Cross Country Team for the AIC Championships to ensure they are committed to attending training and any lead up races or events which we will be conducting.
We still welcome all boys from Years 7 to 12 to get involved in our Cross Country program or the social Runners Club.
Training times and our Cross Country Calendar can be found on the St Peters App. Boys can also find more details about Cross Country from the weekly sport email sent to them by Mr Donatini.
Special Congratulations – Australian National Beach Volleyball Championships
Over the past week two St Peters students competed for Queensland at the Australian National Beach Volleyball Championships. Kye VB (Year 10) competed for Queensland in the Under 16 Team whilst Jai D (Year 10) competed in the Under 17 Team.
At the conclusion of the Australian Championships Kye podium placed and was awarded Bronze (3rd) whilst Jai placed 7th overall. This is a fantastic result for both boys and we as a College would like to recognised and congratulate then on a sensational performance at a National level – Well done!

2021 AUTUMN FIXTURES – FOCUS ROUNDS
This is a great initiative by our GIRLS SPORT CAPTAINS – ASHLEIGH S & CLAUDIA L, let’s support them and come along to watch the girls.
ROUND 6 - FRIDAY MAY 7 – FOOTBALL v ST MARGARET’S ROUND 7 - THURSDAY MAY 13 – BASKETBALL v MBC ROUND 8 - FRIDAY MAY 21 – TOUCH v ST HILDA’S
THIS Friday come along and support the FOOTBALL Girls at Taringa Rovers, students are asked to please remember to wear their formal or playing uniform.
GIVE AWAYS - Lollies and chips for all students coming to support 😊
Last Friday we took on the QG Basketball Powerhouse of BSHS; a tough night for the Saints with our OPEN girls going down but showing great fight to the end – Coach Mike was proud of the girl’s effort.
We came away with four victories - 7B, 9B, 10B & Senior B. The war cry sung by the girls was amazing to watch with the 7B girls singing ‘Oh when the Saints’ for the first time. Well done girls!
The Saints hit the court for a home game this Friday against St Margaret’s.
By the Numbers:
4 - The amount of points the 7B girls won by (24-20) 47 – 10B’s winning margin (51- 4) 10 - The number of girls who played in the 7A game (losing 40-10) 100 – BSHS celebrated their 100 years Centenary – The Open girls, coaches and families enjoy the celebration after their game.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
The girls had their biggest test to date last week as they took on Brisbane State High School. All games displayed a very high level of skill from both teams and were captivating to watch. The Junior/Intermediate B team showed huge improvement from the last time the teams faced off but unfortunately didn’t quite get the win, going down 2-3. The Junior A team faced off against a BSHS team with a huge number of representative players and went down 10-0. The girls did very well in putting up a good fight and playing their own game regardless of the score line. The Intermediates put in a huge effort to make a competitive game after two quick goals from BSHS early on. The girls were unlucky to not put a number of goals away themselves and went down 3-0 in the end. The Senior team played strong and showed that they are starting to gel as a team more and more every week, coming away with a 3-0 loss against a very strong BSHS team. The Open girls have had a string of bad luck with injury and illness and went into this match missing some very key players. The girls fought right to the end and were extremely competitive until the final whistle, finishing down 4-0. It was a challenging round but one I am sure all teams will take a lot of experience away from.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
Perhaps the dark clouds that descended over our two campuses at lunchtime; the persistent showers that ensued for the icy air that greeted us as we disembarked the buses were hints of the afternoon that awaited us, but St Peters Touch girls are a tough bunch and we’d come to Whites Hill to play. Unfortunately, our Round 5 opponents, Brisbane State High School, and the weather in the second round, really did rain on our parade with all but two teams tasting defeat. State High boasts outstanding Touch talent so wins for our 9As and 9/10B composite teams were an outstanding achievement. Well done ladies. This week we battle St Margaret’s at home (UQ) and look forward to a raucous Saints crowd to cheer us on to many more victories.
Round 6 Games v St Margaret’s: Friday 7 May – Please CLICK HERE for the draw.
Well done to all the girls that participated in the compulsory meet at Rivermount on Tuesday afternoon. With over 80 girls attending it was a huge turnout for our last QG meet of the season, Mrs Schreiber is now working hard to finalise the team that will be named in the next few days.
The big day of competition for the 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country season is Saturday 15 May. For those girls new to Cross Country, buses will leave the St Peters Bus Stop at 6.30am to take the girls to Rivermount College, Yatala. It is important the girls travel together to the event as part of the team. Parents can take girls home after their race or buses will return to school at the completion of the competition (approx. 1.00pm). The QGSSSA Cross Country Championships are always a fun filled morning where every member of the team supports each other in running 3km. Please support our runners by being part of 2021 QGSSSA Cross Country, we look forward to seeing you run.
The 2021 Cross Country season calendar is on the St Peters App.
QGSSSA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - SATURDAY 15 MAY @ RIVERMOUNT
Run Club is on every week! Join our Running Community on Friday mornings - meet at 6.30am at the St Peters Bus Stop.
It has been fantastic to see the girls on the water each morning and afternoon and from all reports from the coaches, the girls that have been at training sessions have been improving significantly.
We are still looking for two girls in the Years 8, 9 & 10 age groups, to ensure that each girl has a crew to race in at the regattas next term. It is not too late to sign up! Please reach out to Mr Hicks in Sports House or email p.hicks@stpeters.qld.edu.au if you would like to give Rowing a go.
DATE CLAIMER: ROWING CAMP – An important event on the Girls Rowing calendar is the Rowing Camp, this will be held on the first week of the school holidays at the end of Term 2, Saturday 19 June - Friday 25 June. Please mark these dates in your diaries.
Thanks again to all the girls who came to Rhythmic Gymnastics training on Wednesday.
We had another fun filled, jam packed afternoon working on many rotations.
As a reminder, may I please ask that all girls email me (n.maynard@stpeters.qld.edu.au) if you are going to be absent from training. It is imperative that we are aware of absences.
In the meantime, keep practising and we look forward to seeing you next week!
Mrs Maynard 😊
