Construction work continues on our Centre for Learning and Innovation. An important milestone was reached a couple of weeks ago when the roof was put on. This development means that work is no longer at the mercy of the weather; although we still face challenges around the impact of COVID on the workforce and supply chains. At this point things still remain on track for an October completion.
The Centre for Learning and Innovation is designed to be a genuine Prep to Year 12 facility located in the heart of the College that serves as an unmistakable statement to our community that improving student learning is our core business. It will be a space that reflects the best about how students learn and a space that encourages growth in teaching and learning practices; both best practice and next practice. The learning spaces within the Centre for Learning and Innovation are designed to be agile and flexible. Flexibility in function to allow spaces to change and adapt to different uses, dependent on the group/s that are using the space, or the time of the semester, or the learning demands of the subject discipline. Agility enables ‘spatial synergy’ where spaces have multiple use concurrently and consecutively, zoned for sound, behaviours or activities appropriate to the space (e.g. quiet zones, mobile busy focused noise zones) with the ability to move seamlessly between the different modes of teaching and learning;
The furniture within in the space is important to achieving this. The College is selecting furniture that is flexible so that it can be configured and re-configured to suit different approaches to learning and teaching. Below are some examples of architectural generated drawings of what some of the spaces and furniture within the building might look like.

Unwell students
Over the past week, we have seen a considerable increase in the number of students presenting with sore throats and head cold symptoms.
A reminder, our Caring for the St Peters Community document outlines the following:
Unwell
It is vitally important that anyone (students, staff and parents) who is unwell, does not come to school even after testing negative on a RAT or PCR Test.
If your child is unwell, please ensure you follow your sub-school attendance procedure.
If a student presents as unwell during the day, a parent/caregiver will need to collect their child immediately.
Health Hygiene
Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
Put used tissues straight into the bin.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
Use alcohol-base hand sanitiser. We encourage students to bring their own sanitiser if they can.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Any student presenting as unwell, arrangements will be made for them to be sent home as soon as possible.

Trust
During the week in Chapel, students and staff heard the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water from Matthew’s gospel. It’s a classic story of faith and trust. Jesus appears like a ghost, amidst the stormy water. The disciples are anxious. Jesus reassures them. Peter walks towards Jesus but sees the wind and waves and begins to sink. “Save me!”, Peter cries, and Jesus reaches out and grabs him by the hand and takes him back to the boat. The storm subsides.
This incident in Jesus’ life can be interpreted through the lens of trust. In the storms of life, we can trust the God who is with us in Jesus. At first, Peter trusted that it was Jesus walking on the water. Peter trusted that he could also walk on the water after Jesus’ invitation to do so. Trust involves risk and doubt at times but also confidence and strength. All good descriptors of Peter and all good descriptions of what we can experience in our relationship with Jesus throughout life. In the community here at St Peters we are given opportunities to trust in Jesus’ word and promises. Trust is a simple way of describing faith. Having a quiet confidence in the God who comes to save us.
The disciples who were in the boat witnessing this event declared Jesus to be the Son of God. That he truly had power over mother nature. It takes quite a bit of trust to believe in someone who can walk on water. Our modern ears might find it hard to trust such a supernatural occurrence occurred. It’s a risk to do so but not unreasonable to believe that this man who claimed to be God is beyond the laws of nature and the creator of them. In the end, this story of Jesus shows that faith is trusting what we hear rather than what we see. Faith is trusting the promises of God. The God who comes to us in Jesus to save us through the storms we experience.
An Old Testament verse that speaks of this view of faith is from Isaiah 30:15, In quietness and in trust shall be your strength.
May God bless you and strengthen you with such trust this term.

NAPLAN
Our students are now almost through the week of NAPLAN testing and have coped extremely well. They have persevered each day with the different areas of focus and seem to have taken the actual testing process in their stride. It is a credit to the teachers and parents for framing this set of testing as just one of the areas that is completed at school rather than over emphasising its importance in the life of the school.

Inter-Lutheran Cross Country
Congratulations to the students and PE staff who battled the inclement weather on Monday to compete with other Lutheran Schools in the Inter-Lutheran Cross Country. Despite the difficult conditions, there was an overwhelming climate of personal best and teamwork from our Primary Years athletes.
GRATITUDE
Last Thursday I spoke to the students in Upper Primary about expressing gratitude. This came after a particularly entertaining lunchtime where we spent time enjoying the musical talents of the U.S. Navy Fleet Band in the PAC. I was overwhelmed with gratitude to be working in such a place where I could do this during my lunch break.
Gratitude causes synchronised activation in multiple brain regions and lights up parts of the brain's reward pathways and the hypothalamus. In short, gratitude can boost neurotransmitter serotonin and activate the brain stem to produce dopamine. Dopamine is our brain's pleasure chemical. Expressing gratitude makes us feel happy!
An active practice of gratitude can increase neuron density and lead to greater emotional intelligence. In neuroscience research, Hebb’s Law says that, neurons that fire together wire together.
Through the power of gratitude, you can wire your brain to be optimistic and compassionate, making you feel good. The more you look, the more you can find to be grateful for. Perhaps expressing gratitude could become a regular part of your dinnertime conversation each evening?

Year 9 Chinese Temple Excursion
On Friday 6 May, our Year 9 Chinese students were fortunate to attend the Chung Tian Temple to celebrate Budda’s birthday festival.
Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a wide range of unique experiences to help deepen their cultural understanding. This included cultural activities such as Meditation Practice, The Art of Tea, Diabolo Instruction, Lion Dance Instruction, Chinese Calligraphy, and Chinese Painting. One of the highlights for the students was being able to appreciate traditional Chinese architecture in the temple buildings and the beautiful Zen gardens. In addition, the students thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful variety of authentic foods on offer at the lunchtime food market.
This was a great experience that students of Chinese have longed for. They were very engaged with these activities and learned a lot through the excursion. It was inspiring to see them showcasing their language skills and their love for language learning.
Years 7-9 Japanese Obento Incursion
At St Peters, we strongly believe in bringing culture and language together.
On Friday 5 May, students of Japanese in Years 7 to 9, were offered the opportunity to explore the cultural significance of obento (Japanese boxed lunch), and experience authentic food to celebrate Japanese Children's Day. In Japan, an obento is more than just a meal, it is a way to show love and care for others and is a convenient and portable way for students and workers to maintain a healthy and balanced diet.
All the students very much enjoyed the delightful Japanese obento cultural event and took advantage of this opportunity to connect with each other.

US Navy 7th Fleet Visit
Last Thursday, the US Navy 7th Fleet band based in Japan came to visit St Peters. This talented group of musicians were in town for the Coral Sea Commemorative services and took time out of their busy schedule to work with our students.
The group arrived and jumped straight into a workshop with Senior Stage Band. The musicians were very impressed wit the high level of musicality from the band and helped sharpen up their repertoire for their upcoming performance at the Brisbane Youth Jazz Festival this Friday 13 May at BEMAC.
After a short lunch break the 7th Fleet's 'New Orleans' style Brass Band then performed for a packed crowd in the PAC Auditorium. This was the first in our Lunchtime Concert Series that was open to all students, staff, and parents. The appreciative audience were treated to a variety of tunes from Bourbon Street to New York, finishing of with a rousing rendition of, When the Saints.
After a standing ovation, the 7th Fleet musicians settled in for an afternoon of workshops with Symphonic Winds and Winds Ensemble. Symphonic Winds had the pleasure of working with 7th Fleets Band Master – Lieutenant Matt Anderson 'The Boss' - whilst Wind Ensemble worked with Chief Petty Officer – Anthony Smouse 'The Chief'. Both bands workshopped their repertoire for the upcoming Queensland Youth Music Awards and were delighted to be able to sit next to the amazing 7th Fleet musicians.
The 7th Fleet band are an amazing group of generous musicians who gave up their time to share their skill and talent with our lucky St Peters musicians. We completed the day by sharing an Australian treat, the 'Tim Tam Slam', a well-deserved coffee and sugar hit to send them on their way.
We are looking forward to meeting up again next year when the band visit to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Coral Sea Battle and the forming of the 7th Fleet.

What a fantastic and enjoyable year for St Peters Cricket!
The 2021-2022 St Peters Cricket season was our most successful yet with player numbers growing from 174 to over 250 boys across 22 teams. Support for Cricket has never been as strong, and we expect to field more teams with over 300 players next season.
There are many expenses connected with running the Cricket program, and we solely rely on our own fundraising efforts through the support of the school community, local businesses and school grants. The growth in player numbers will require a significant investment in new equipment and training apparel - crucial to our program being successful.
Funding is also important for us to be able to engage highly respected specialist Coaches that will be involved in all age on a regular basis though the year.
The St Peters Cricket Program is seeking key sponsors for the 2022-2023 season, and we are reaching out to the community to be a part of this exciting growth before seeking external sponsors and all the money raised goes back to helping our boys and the Program.
By partnering with St Peters Cricket, you will be supporting an outstanding Cricket program that caters for all boys from Juniors to Seniors leading into Representative Cricket.
We have a detailed prospectus available which outlines the program for both corporate and community sponsorship options and costs. If you would like to be a part of the exciting growth in St Peters cricket, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
Please do not hesitate to contact the St Peters Cricket Parents Support Group at cricketpsg@stpeters.qld.edu.au to request a prospectus, and we thank you in advance for your consideration.
Kind regards,
The Cricket Support Group

Last weekend was a successful round of AIC Sport for St Peters. Commencing with the success of our St Peters Chess boys who competed against Villanova on Friday afternoon and finished with some exceptional games of Rugby and Football on Saturday, at Villanova College Playing Fields, Tingalpa.

All pre-season training sessions will commence next week. Please watch for further details from each Sport Coordinator, training schedules will be on the St Peters App as soon as they are finalised.
Last Friday was one of those days in Sport where I walked away feeling very proud! We may not have won many games, but I was so proud of our girls. Led by our amazing team of coaches, we made the late change of venue for many teams to BSHS which presented the opportunity to play on an indoor court. Our teams showed grit and determination against much bigger and stronger opposition and the 10B and 9B had great wins, well done to these teams. The Open teams score did not reflect the game, our girls were with then until the las quarter, down by 1 at half time. Well done to all girls 😊
Good luck Girls for Round 7.
Round 6 Results & Player of the Round
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 7 Draw v St Margaret’s for this Thursday afternoon – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Round 6 saw St Peters come up against BSHS, with multiple teams fighting for the top spot on the table. This round was also our school focus round, and it was excellent to see supporters make their way down to Toowong FC to cheer on the girls! The round did not disappoint with some very close results and a high degree of skill on display.
The Junior girls put up a big fight against a very strong opponent, finishing with a 3-1 loss. The game was neck and neck up until the last few minutes before BSHS managed to get a couple away. So much heart was shown by the girls to give it everything they had until the last second.
The Intermediates brought their A-game and came away with a 5-0 win. This cements their spot at the top of their table at this stage of the competition. With three rounds to go, the girls will be working hard to ensure they maintain this excellent form.
The Senior A team put on one of the most nail-biting performances I have had the pleasure of watching. The teams were goal for goal the entire game, which ended in a 5-5 draw. This leaves the Seniors tied for the top spot on the table.
The Opens showed so much grit and determination to make a statement against BSHS this year. Unfortunately, they were too strong this year and managed to beat the girls 3-1. It really was anyone’s game, with so much talent on display and huge efforts put in by all.
Well done girls across the program for some incredible performances in such a tough round!
Unfortunately, the rainy weather has wreaked havoc with our Touch fixtures. Last week our games against Brisbane State High School were cancelled because UQ closed their fields. These games have now been rescheduled to Tuesday 24 May. Further information about these games will be communicated toward the end of next week. The games against St Margaret’s, scheduled for Thursday 12 May, have been abandoned due to the weather, however the Open’s match will be rescheduled. More details about this rescheduled game will be released once dates have been confirmed. It’s been such a tough season, but the touch girls and their families have done an outstanding job managing such uncertainty (and soggy boots and uniforms).
ROUND 7 FIXTURES v ST MARGARET’S - CANCELLED
DATE CLAIMER: Rescheduled Round 3 games v St Aidan’s Date: Monday 16 May 2022 Venue: Ambiwerra Sports Fields, Erinvale St, Corinda Teams: Senior A, 10A, 8/9B & 8A (one round of games only)

Community Run Club - Join our Running Community on Friday mornings - meet at 6.30am at the St Peters Bus Stop.
It continues to be fantastic to see all the girls on the water both in the mornings and of an afternoon, as well as in the gym. As we approach the middle of the term, can I please remind families that consistency of attendance both on the water and in the gym is critical in preparation for the upcoming Rowing Camp and the regattas next term. The more time the girls can spend on the water as crews and individuals in single sculls, the better and more prepared they are going to become for the regattas, and the more fun they have in the long run!
BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships
Next Tuesday evening, 17 May, we see the first Rowing Competition for the 2022 year – the BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships at Somerville house.
All girls are required to attend this competition as supporters for the College, though not all will be participating.
The College will be providing a bus to and from Somerville house for all girls, girls are required to be on this bus together, details below.
Departing the St Peters Bus Stop - 3.45pm
Returning to the St Peters Bus Stop - 8.30pm
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing Program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times, and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA Regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group is divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2,3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
Upcoming trials -
On Wednesday (11/05) afternoon the girls complete the first trial for the season on the ergometers in the gym.
Saturday 21 May, the girls will complete their first sculling trial on the Brisbane River. All girls will complete these trials within their normal scheduled Saturday training times – can I please ask families to ensure that girls are present to complete these trials.
If girls are absent and do not complete these trials, it makes it impossible to correctly place girls into appropriate crews. As always if there are unforeseen circumstances, these will be taken into account.
Boys Season Celebration and Girls Season Launch | New Rowing Boat fleet Blessing – Saturday 21 May
Between 4pm-6pm on Saturday 21 May the Rowing community is invited to the 2022 Boys Season Celebration, Girls Season Launch and the New Boats Christening. I look forward to celebrating together with the whole community at this event.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is generally a highlight as it a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is between the 18-24 June in Bundaberg.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs are currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.
Thank you girls! Another fantastic week of RG training!
This week, both training sessions concentrated on movement sequences. Years 8 and 9 girls revisited their routines from last year, while Year 11 girls showcased their ball routine.
Each week, the girls will train with two apparatus – Hoop and Ball.
Performance groups have now been finalised and these will be announced at next week’s training.
Please be mindful of keeping the same time each week for training. This will help with coaching and team routines.
Date Claimer: QGSSSA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – FRIDAY 5 AUGUST (Week 4, Term 3). The 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics Calendar can be found on the St Peters App
As always, keep up the great work, keep practising and keep smiling.
I’ll see you at training 😊🤸♀️🤸♂️

All parents and friends of St Peters are welcome to come to the P&F Centre to buy second hand uniforms, donate old uniforms or just stop by for a coffee and chat.
Did you know that EVERY CENT that is spent on second hand school uniforms is invested in providing blankets, toiletries, and other essentials for the homeless!?
Come along with a friend and have a great night learning a new skill, no knitting needles required! This workshop applies the simple cold felting process using wool. The scarf is designed using colour as the wool is prepared for a hand rolling technique. The scarf is light with a transparent quality depending on and your application of the cobweb technique. This results in a very suitable scarf for a Queensland winter! If you attended the previous workshop and would like to come along again, we will offer a new weaving skill, so you have a different scarf outcome.

The photo is scheduled for next Thursday 19 May, 1.40pm at Café 45. For those children in Lower Primary, a SPOSA Officer will escort your child to and from the location when required. All other students will make their own way there. Students must be dressed in their full formal uniform.
Please encourage your child to attend. If you have any questions contact the SPOSA office spos@stpeters.qld.edu.au or 3377 6592.
