Schools around Australia, including St Peters are celebrating National Boarding Schools Week. Our boarders themselves, took ownership of the week and its activities proudly showcasing the many benefits of undertaking your schooling while living on campus.
Boarding occupies a unique and special place at St Peters. In part this is because St Peters began life as a Boarding School. In fact, the original 56 students who commenced way back in 1945 when St Peters opened were all boarders. On a personal level I feel a special connection to boarding because my mother was a boarder here at St Peters, in Ross Roy in the late 50s. In fact, my office used to be her bedroom – a story that I love telling visitors.
Up until the early 1970’s St Peters was predominantly a boarding school. Over the past 50 years various societal changes has seen St Peters, (and virtually every other school that offers boarding) become largely day schools with a relatively small boarding component. In 2022, we have 131 boarders who come from places near and far, ranging from metropolitan Brisbane, to regional Queensland, rural and remote Australia. Despite the challenges of a pandemic we still have young people from overseas including Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, PNG, the Middle East and China. We are also the only Co-Educational Boarding School in Brisbane – meaning that brothers and sisters can be educated together. It is this diversity that gives boarding at St Peters a special character. It is in this diverse setting that our young people learn to live in community, building friendships that will last them a lifetime, whilst at the same time developing independence, resilience, character and values.
Some things about boarding at St Peters have undoubtably changed over the decades; and yet at the same time the essence of it has not. This is apparent as I move amongst the boarders - a sense of belonging and collective purpose is evident within an atmosphere of care, which helps to make St Peters Boarding ‘a home away from home’.
Head of College Leave
I will be on Leave effective from Friday 20 May until the beginning of July. During this period of leave I am looking forward to doing some further study and continuing to learn, as well as making some space for renewal ... and thinking and planning how we can continue to make St Peters even better. Lisa Delaney will be Acting Head of College, ably supported by the Senior Leadership Team during this period. I thank you in advance for your support of them. I look forward to returning to our wonderful community at the start of Term 3.
Ministry
‘Ask what I should give you’ (2 Chronicles 1:7)
That night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, "Ask what I should give you", (2 Chronicles 1:7).
Have you ever wondered what you would wish for if you were asked for three wishes? It’s tantalising, isn’t it? Would you want wealth, beauty, power, smaller feet, curly hair, world peace, an end to lockdowns and a cure for COVID-19? Stories about Aladdin’s lamp and wishes coming true have featured in fairy tales for generations, but Solomon hits the jackpot! God asks him what he wants and actually makes good on the request. And not only does Solomon get what he wished for, but God adds on riches, possessions and honour. Wow! That is an amazing response.
I ask God for a lot of things. There are many people who I pray for on a regular and irregular basis. I don’t keep tabs on how these prayers are answered, but I know God hears those prayers and some responses have been over and above what I could have expected.
If we fast forward to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, I find his reference to King Solomon most interesting. We have Solomon, who has wisdom and knowledge plus riches and possessions. Yet when Jesus tells us not to worry about life, he suggests that we ‘consider the lilies of the field … Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these’. And as I look at the lilies, freesias, bluebells, daisies, sweet peas and all of the other spring flowers blooming in my garden today, I have to agree that nothing made by humans can match them for colour, form, perfume and beauty! Jesus then suggests that we don’t need to worry as God is there looking after us. There is also the promise: "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well", (Matthew 6:25ff).
Solomon is not the only one that God is going to shower with blessings. God will also look after each of us in every way – take time to look around and recognise those blessings he has gifted us.
Loving God, thank you for hearing our prayers and answering them so generously. Please strengthen our faith in you so that when we worry, we recognise that you are looking after us and that you will provide for all of our needs in ways far beyond what we can imagine. Amen.

As part of their professional service, teachers often volunteer to host trainee or pre-service teachers in their classrooms. St Peters teaching staff support student teachers from a wide range of local, interstate, and overseas universities. At first glance, the benefits of this relationship might appear one sided, as our pre-service teachers gain professional insight and experience from some of St Peters outstanding classroom practitioners, as well as becoming a temporary part of our wonderful St Peters learning community.
Benefits of this association are, however, considerably more collaborative. Host teachers, school students and pre-service teachers all reap the advantages of this relationship. When teachers host a preservice teacher, they reflect regularly on their daily practice as they are observed and questioned by the trainee teacher. This serves as a source of continuous professional development which highlights and encourages best quality practice for classrooms. Pre-service teachers also bring to the table, fresh perspectives and a familiarity with latest research.
Pre-service teachers begin their professional experience with many days of observation, note taking and questioning. This is followed by supported planning and teaching where the host teacher is ensuring the classroom program and operation continue at a high level. Towards the end of the experience, pre-service teachers often take the class for a whole session or a whole day under the direction and supervision of their host teacher. While the host teacher is heavily involved in observing and guiding their mentee, this situation also gives the opportunity for the class teacher to observe their own students in a unique way, providing more depth to their understanding of students.
At St Peters, we are fortunate to have staff and systems in place that support our host teachers and pre-service teachers, and we look forward to many more years of productive relationships with universities and pre-service teachers, that benefit our children and staff in unique and immeasurable ways.

A reminder that this week we have guest speakers visiting the Senior School during the Academic Care and Wellbeing lessons on Thursday. As part of the Year 10 program, the students will be participating in a workshop delivered by Unleashing Personal Potential on the topic of developing positive relationships. This is the first session of two workshops and aims to help students strengthen connections with others in the cohort as well as building on the skills for understanding the value of relationships. Under the PERMAH model, capacity for 'relationships' is regarded as an integral factor for happiness, mental and physical health, and improved performance at school. A second workshop will be delivered to the cohort in June, and the material covered in the workshop will be discussed in upcoming pastoral care lessons and Year Level Meetings.
Year 11 students have received their invitation to the semi-formal this week. Payment and RSVP information will be emailed home to parents later this week also. Please contact Mr Meurant with any questions regarding this event. A special thanks to the students and staff who have been involved in the committee tasked with organising various elements of the event.
The Year 12 cohort will hear from Michelle McGuinness from You Choose - Youth Road Safety on Thursday. Students and parents have been emailed information about this talk which aims to raise awareness of personal responsibility and accountability for safe driving decisions. Students will have the opportunity to extend on the lessons learnt in this session by choosing to participate in a defensive driving course on Friday 2 September. Information for this optional course has been provided to the cohort and parents, and expressions of interest are being collated by Ms Jamieson.

Year 8 Kaleidoscope 2022 'Camp Fortitude' | Performances are next week!
Next week is performance week for Year 8 Kaleidoscope! The cast are very excited to bring their show to life and to perform for a live audience.
On Friday 27 May and Saturday 28 May, more than 100 students in the cast and crew will present Camp Fortitude - a week away at a camp before school starts. It’s going to be the best week of their life! Students old and new must work together to complete a series of challenges for a chance to win the Camp Fortitude flag! The competition is on! As they face their fears, learn to work together, stand up to bullies, and make new friends they realise that the world is a whole lot bigger than just themselves. We follow the students as they build resilience and have a good time exploring the camp and persevering through the challenges the week holds. The students try everything to succeed, and rise to the challenge of listening to each other, supporting their groups strengths and weakness and working as a team to achieve their goal.
Tickets for Kaleidoscope performances ($15/$10 concession) are now on sale through Eventbrite and will be available at the door.
Please come to support these enthusiastic and talented group of young performers and enjoy a great night of entertainment. The servery will be open for drinks and snacks from 6.00pm.

This is to service older junior levels as well as the bottom age of representative basketball. Round 7 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
It seems like our Touch teams will never get a game, with yet another drenched week. The incessant rain last week saw the entire QGSSSA Round washed out, so these games won’t be rescheduled. This week the Open, Senior A, 10A, 9A, 8/9B, 8A, 7A and 7B teams are due to play Moreton Bay College at White’s Hill Reserve, Camp Hill, with the Senior B and 8B teams playing St Margaret teams at Windsor Park, Windsor. With more rain forecast, though, please watch the St Peters App for Notifications and Cancellations. Next week is our final week for the season. We are planning rescheduled games for the 8A and 10A teams against St Aidan’s on Monday 23 May at Ambiwerra Sports Fields, Corinda; a rescheduled Round against Brisbane State High on Tuesday 24 May at the University of Queensland and then our final games on Friday 27 May against St Hilda’s at the Gold Coast (due to Kaleidoscope, the 8As will have already played this game and 8Bs have a Bye). Please note, that, due to the rescheduled games, there will be no training for the 8A and 10A teams on Monday, and no training for the Opens and Senior As on Tuesday of next week. We are praying that the girls will have the opportunity to play a few more games before the final whistle is blown for a very soggy, Season 22.
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 8 Draw v Moreton Bay College for this Friday afternoon/evening – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.
Tuesday evening saw the first of the Brisbane School Girls Rowing Association competitions for 2022. The girls travelled to Somerville house to compete in the Indoor Rowing Championships. Congratulations to Jess M who achieved a second place in the Year 10 individual 1000m event.
On Water training resumption
On water training has resumed this week for all rowers as per the weekly schedule. Saturday will also follow the previously published schedule.
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing Program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times, and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group is divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2,3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
Upcoming trials -
Saturday 21 May, the girls will complete their first sculling trial on the Brisbane River. All girls will complete these trials within their normal scheduled Saturday training times – can I please ask families to ensure that girls are present to complete these trials.
If girls are absent and do not complete these trials, it makes it impossible to correctly place girls into appropriate crews. As always if there are unforeseen circumstances, these will be taken into account.
Boys Season Celebration and Girls Season Launch | New Rowing Boat fleet Blessing – Saturday 21 May
Between 4pm-6pm on Saturday 21 May the Rowing community is invited to the 2022 Boys Season Celebration, Girls Season Launch and the New Boats Christening.
Drinks will be available to purchase for a gold coin donation, as well a small number of pizzas for the students to enjoy. Families are asked to please bring a plate of finger food to share for this occasion.
We look forward to celebrating together with the whole community at this event.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is generally a highlight as it a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is between the 18-24 June in Bundaberg.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs are currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.
Thank you girls! Another fantastic week of RG training!
Group A, Group B, Yr8 and Yr7 Groups all worked on learning their routine sequence (to music) with both Hoop and Ball apparatus. The Hoop is a difficult apparatus, so the girls should be proud of all their efforts – well done girls 😊
There were a few absences this week, so we’ll now announce performance groups at next week’s training.
Please be mindful of keeping the same time each week for training. This will help with coaching and team routines.
Date Claimer: QGSSSA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – FRIDAY 5 AUGUST (Week 4, Term 3). The 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics Calendar can be found on the St Peters App

Come along with a friend and have a great night learning a new skill. This workshop applies the simple cold felting process using wool (No knitting involved!). The scarf is designed using colour as the wool is prepared for a hand rolling technique. The scarf is light with a transparent quality depending on and your application of the cobweb technique. This results in a very suitable scarf for a Queensland winter! If you attended the previous workshop and would like to come along again, we will offer a new weaving skill, so you have a different scarf outcome.
