In this edition of SchoolTV - Social Media & Digital Reputation
Social media has become such an integral part of a teenager’s life. However, many miss out on some critical social skills with most communicating whilst looking at a screen instead of another person! Statistics show that 60% of 10 - 11 year olds are using at least one social media site, with the majority using age-restricted platforms. What kids do, post and say online is permanent and most are not mature enough to manage their own digital footprint. Friendships, relationships and even future job prospects are all put at risk.
Parents need to be aware of what picture their children are painting of themselves online. Unfortunately, many parents do not see the inherent dangers of these sites, as they form opinions based on their own experience. But predators are usually not interested in grooming adults. Over the years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of primary schoolers owning mobile phones, highlighting the importance to teach kids about the dangers of social media and the implications it can have.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn how to talk to their children about the inherent dangers of social media and how to educate their kids to be responsible users in our online world.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the School Counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Maths Enrichment News
Recently around 300 students from across Queensland took place in a mathematical enrichment and selection program for Maths Olympiad Problem Solving. Topics included Pascal's Triangle and the Fibonacci Sequence.
A number of St Peters students took part with many obtaining exceptional results. Floria S (Year 9) achieved the highest score across the state and was the only student to solve every question! There were other great achievements including Year 7 students Aaron X, Alicia G and Tom B. All of these students will now participate in a more difficult mathematics program to see if one day they can compete at an international level.
We also recognise Mulan M (Year 10) who is currently participating in the highest-level Olympiad program, battling some tough questions with a smile.

Year 5 in the Centre for Learning and Innovation
Over the last six weeks, Year 5 have been engaged in their ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry. This year, with the help of our Primary Years Technology specialist Alanah Miles, the unit was reimagined to give students a greater opportunity to ideate, plan, design and create. With the Centre for Learning and Innovation recently opening, it was the perfect place to do it.
In the unit, students were asked to consider whether it would be best to keep or redevelop a site that was currently being used as a sheep station in rural Australia. This required an inquiry into needs and wants, based on the criteria of community, environment and economy.
After choosing one of the alternate options for the use of the land, students used ‘How might we…’ questions to ideate, plan, design and finally create using the Minecraft platform. This was a highly collaborative and exciting opportunity and the CLI provided the perfect working environment. Allowing the students to gather as a large group, break into smaller teams and use its flexible furniture and writable surfaces to collaborate, the students brought the space to life. The next stage of the unit will see the students pitching their final proposals for the land in a Community Convention where they will be evaluated using the given criteria.
While it is not quite complete, the unit has provided great learning opportunities and excitement for both students and teachers.

Chess Success
Last Tuesday 16 May, five enthusiastic Primary Years Chess players travelled to Fernvale State School to compete in the Term 2 Brisbane West Primary Chess Tournament. The students had a great day and represented St Peters beautifully and with pride.
William S, Iris W, Leon Y, and Daniel S took out first place in the A division. William S also finished in second place individually in A division. Aaron G also played well scoring a merit ribbon for winning six out of his eight games.
Congratulations to all students who attended and special thanks to Mr Brock Smith for attending this tournament with our Primary Years students. We are all looking forward to the Term 3 competition.

How to be a supportive parent during exams
As we approach the later stages of Semester 1, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the crucial role parents can play in supporting students with their studies, particularly as they prepare for upcoming exams and assessments.
Preparing for exams and assessments can be a challenging time for some students and their families. As parents, your support and encouragement can make a significant difference in helping your student navigate this period successfully. Here are some suggestions on how you can play an essential role in their journey:
Establish a supportive environment
Creating a conducive environment at home is paramount. Provide a quiet study area, free from distractions, where your student can focus and concentrate. Ensure they have access to necessary study materials.
Encourage effective time management
Time management skills are vital during exam preparation. Help your student create a study schedule that allocates specific time slots for each subject. Encourage breaks in between study sessions to promote productivity and prevent burnout. This is something that our Year Level Coordinators and Academic Mentors can also assist with.
Foster open communication
Maintain open lines of communication with your student regarding their studies. Ask them about their progress, challenges they may be facing and how you can assist. Offer guidance and reassurance, emphasising that it's normal to feel overwhelmed at times and that you're there to support them.
Support healthy habits
Encourage your student to adopt healthy habits during this period. Ensure they are getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals and engaging in physical activity. A well-rested and nourished mind and body are better equipped to handle the demands of the school day and exams.
Provide emotional support
The pressure of exams can take an emotional toll on students. Be empathetic and understanding, acknowledging their feelings of stress and anxiety. Offer encouragement and remind them of their capabilities.
Engage in active revision
Support your student's revision process by actively engaging with their studies. Quiz them on important concepts, discuss topics together and review their study notes. By taking an interest in their learning, you not only reinforce their understanding but also show your support and encouragement.
Seek additional resources
Encourage your student to explore additional resources beyond their textbooks. Online educational platforms, tutorial videos and practice exams can provide valuable supplementary material.
Celebrate progress and achievements
Throughout the term and exam period, celebrate your student's progress and achievements, no matter how small. Acknowledge their hard work, effort and dedication. Positive reinforcement boosts their confidence and motivates them to continue striving for success.
Manage expectations
It is important to manage both your expectations and your student's expectations during this time. Each student has their unique strengths and abilities and it is essential to appreciate their individual progress rather than solely focusing on grades. Encourage a growth mindset, emphasising that exams are a learning opportunity.
Take care of yourself
Lastly, remember to take care of yourself as well. Supporting your student through the exam period can be demanding and it's crucial to maintain your own wellbeing. Find time for self-care, engage in activities that rejuvenate you and seek support from friends and family if needed.
We wish all our students the best of luck as they prepare for their upcoming assessment.

Spectrum Year 12 Meet the Artist and Filmmaker
The Spectrum Year 12 Meet the Artist and Filmmaker event was well attended by the College community, parents and friends. Category 4, Ting J:
Age group – High School (ages 13 – 17 years)
Cash prize for the winner $1,000
Below is her painting titled ‘Self Reflection’.
Self-reflection
God has given everyone a purpose as one of his creations. The arts are one of the greatest gifts God has given humanity, whether we create, or embrace it. As an artist myself, I was called according to God’s purpose to express beauty through my artworks and share this gift. This artwork enhances the idea of art being my inner God-given purpose. The concept demonstrates a self-portrait painted through the reflection of a mirror, suggesting the idea of looking deeper into yourself, understanding and sharing your purpose.

Queensland Youth Music Awards
This week, St Peters hosted the Queensland Youth Music Awards (QYMA). This competition draws ensembles from all over Queensland to compete in a supportive and collaborative environment. St Peters plays host to a vast majority of the sections including the Primary Concert Band, Secondary Concert Band (Intermediate) and Secondary Concert Band (Advanced) sections.
Concert Band 2 performed on Monday night in the Primary Bands section and received a Bronze Award for their efforts. Adjudicator Mr Edward Kennedy congratulated them on a great performance and commented on the ensemble presentation and discipline on stage. For many members of this ensemble, this was their first public performance. Not to be outdone Concert Band 1 and Wind Ensemble both performed in the Secondary Bands (Intermediate) section on Wednesday evening, both receiving Silver Awards.
The highlight to round out the week was a phenomenal performance from Symphonic Winds in the Secondary Bands (Advanced) section on Friday night. Symphonic Winds earned a Gold Award and first place against the cream of Brisbane’s Music Schools.
Congratulations to all performers and thank you to Mr Pradella, Mr Bowers, Haydn N, Lily J, Sadie H and Stelle C for their tireless efforts backstage.
The St Peters Band program now shifts focus to our next event, 'An Afternoon at the Movies' on Sunday 4 June, 3:00pm in the PAC Dron Auditorium. If you would like to join us for an entertaining afternoon of movie music combined with film highlights and costumes, to purchase tickets CLICK HERE.

Year 8 Kaleidoscope 2023 “The Great Debate” is this week!
This week is performance week for Year 8 Kaleidoscope! The cast is very excited to bring their show to life and perform it for a live audience.
On Friday 26 May and Saturday 27 May, more than 100 cast and crew members will present The Great Debate which follows the well-argued question of "are teenagers given too little responsibility?"
Within the show, students argue for the affirmative and negative sides and present their points of view through scenes and re-enactments of what teenagers may experience in their everyday lives. We see the ups and downs that come with being a teenager and how different everybody and their life experiences are. We learn how determined some students are to study and achieve the best results to secure their future; while other students just want to experience being a child for as long as they can. The pressure, the responsibility and the expectations teenagers experience lead the audience through the debate and we learn that no matter what, we are all in this together.
Tickets for Kaleidoscope performances ($15.00/$10.00 concession) are now on sale through Eventbrite and will be available at the door.

Senior Stage Band and Senior Jazz Combo – Swingin’ at the Brisbane Youth Jazz Festival
Last Thursday evening 18 May the St Peters Senior Stage Band and Senior Jazz Combo attended the Brisbane Youth Jazz Festival. The annual event run by the Brisbane Jazz Club was presented at BEMAC (Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre) whilst the Jazz Club undergoes some well-needed renovations.
The festival is a wonderful opportunity for students to perform in a non-competitive environment and receive valuable feedback from this year’s mentor: Martha Baartz. Martha Baartz is a widely respected and talented saxophonist, composer and educator who has performed nationally and internationally with some of the biggest names in jazz.
The Senior Stage Band gave a meticulous and musical performance to the appreciative crowd and earned a special mention and commendation from Martha Baartz for their mature ensemble balance, quality presentation and dynamic musical skill. Martha has also offered to come to St Peters at a future date to work with the band and offer her professional advice.
Senior Jazz Combo then took to the stage and captivated the audience with their energy and enthusiasm. This ensemble, whilst under the tutelage of our very own jazz legend Mr Pradella, has been set free to direct themselves. This is a mature and professional direction for a Jazz Combo, one that was recognised and commended by Martha Baartz.
The Brisbane Youth Jazz Festival was a great evening of music that also allowed our students to hear other schools, community and semi-professional student ensembles perform in a fabulous venue.

Round 9 – Reconciliation Round
This Friday is Round 9, the final round of the 2023 Autumn Fixture season and what a season it has been for our Basketball, Touch and Football girls. Next week I will provide a full summary of the seasons for each sport.
Round 9 coincides with National Reconciliation Week where for the first time, our Open Basketball, Football & Touch teams will wear the St Peters Girls Sport Reconciliation uniform. The artwork on the uniforms has been designed by Tully Button, an Old Scholar (2021) and current Girls Rowing Coach.
Senior students Sophie B, Gabby S & Chuva M are pictured wearing these uniforms and below is Tully’s description of the meaning of the artwork.
“The circle motifs used in the design show the individual QGSSSA schools. The lines between represent them coming together and connecting through their shared love of sport. Inside the circle motifs are clusters of dots which show the individual team members being supported and showcased by their schools.”
We are honoured to be a part of National Reconciliation Week and our girls will represent St Peters and wear these uniforms with pride.
We will do our part to share histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

It continues to be fantastic to see all the girls on the water both in the mornings and afternoons, as well as in the gym. As we approach the middle of the term, can I please remind families that consistency of attendance both on the water and in the gym is crucial in preparation for the upcoming rowing camp and the regattas next term. More information is coming later this week by email so stay tuned. The more time the girls can spend on the water as crews and individuals in single sculls, the better and more prepared they are going to become for the regattas, and the more fun they have in the long run!
BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships
Last Tuesday, our Girls' shed competed at the 2023 BSRA Indoor Rowing Championships hosted by Somerville House. It was a loud and raucous night that challenges the best of us. I am proud that all our teams gave their best and we had several girls achieve PBs. I would like to congratulate our Year 9 Relay Team of Stephanie P, Summer P, Mia M, Yoyo W and Lily R who placed 2nd in their event.
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group are divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2, 3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
Selection trial:
Round 1 – completed in Week 3
Round 2 – completed in Week 6
Round 3 – completed in Week 9 and the first day at Rowing Camp
If girls are absent and do not complete these trials, it makes it impossible to correctly place girls into appropriate crews. As always, if there are unforeseen circumstances, these will be taken into account and alternate opportunities provided to the maximum extent possible.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is a highlight as it is a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly, as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is 17 June - 23 June in Bundaberg. More information and sign on forms will be out next week.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.

The schedule can also be found on the St Peters App.
