Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and teal. That’s the makeup of the new parliament. Actually, scratch yellow – fancy that after all that advertising! Filling in the Senate ballot paper last Saturday reminded me of how diverse we are as a nation and how we simply cannot assume everyone else thinks the same as we do.
Regardless of our loyalties, I think we are all breathing a sigh of relief that Election Day has come and gone. I hope you enjoyed exercising your democratic freedom and responsibility. I enjoy elections very much, but I must say I’m glad for an end to the ubiquitous political advertising on TV, internet, billboards, footpaths, bus shelters, newspapers and even on our phones. One family member received eight SMS messages within a few minutes from a political party. Safe to say that party didn't get their vote.
For all of our reasons to grumble about our country, when we look around the world, we must be grateful we live where we do. We are not under attack from an aggressive neighbour. We are not living under the tyranny of a dictator. We are free to vote as we please. And we are free to vote for change, if that's what we want. Collectively, that’s what we did. Could we do things better? Of course! Should we expect better our politicians? Certainly! But let's not forget to thank God for the good things we do have as citizens of Australia, including democracy.
God’s word calls us to submit to our earthly rulers because they do God's work of looking after us. We are to pay our taxes and obey the law (Romans 13:1-7). We are to pray for our leaders, so we can live in peace and prosperity (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Ultimately, God’s word calls us to a life of praise of God our whole life long. We are called to trust not in 'princes' who cannot save, but to trust in God.
Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. Psalm 146:1-3
We have a new Prime Minister, Mr Albanese. We wish him well and pray for his success as our leader. In so doing we offer him our support as citizens of Australia. But we also remain citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20) because of all God has done for us in Jesus. We recognise God as the ultimate authority who loves us perfectly, even when we don’t vote for him. For that, we praise God forever and ever!
Blessings

Meaning within the PERMAH framework
Meaning is a sense of positive purpose, which gives us direction and allows us to think beyond ourselves. At St Peters, examples of this come through servant leadership and being others focused. Meaning is sometimes tied to membership with a team, club or group and having a sense of meaning gives people direction and can guide their decision making. Meaning has also been positively correlated with happiness, higher life satisfaction, self-esteem, conscientiousness, optimism, positive emotions, autonomy and positive emotions.
Although we cannot explicitly teach someone to have meaning in their lives, developing opportunities to explore meaning can be beneficial for ourselves and our children. Social media and advertising often encourage us to chase after hollow pursuits, using strategies along the lines of, if you just buy this product, then you’ll be happy. When we have a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives, we add a layer of protection from these superficial pursuits. For our children, there is an opportunity to tap into their natural curiosity and help them to form an idea of who they are and what is important to them.
Suggestions for enhancing meaning in your home include:
Family discussions about what gives you a greater sense of purpose and your role in the bigger picture.
Engaging in community service or volunteering for a cause that matters to you.
Reflecting on your Signature Strengths (top 5 Character Strengths) and how these equip you to serve others in a unique way.
Trying new activities to see what brings you purpose or ignites you.

Year 1 Unit of Inquiry – Sustainability
On World Bee Day (20 May, 2022), Year 1 students enjoyed an incursion by bee expert, Murray Arkadieff, who is also a Year 1 dad. Murray spoke to the students about native and honey bees. The students were able to spot the live queen bee in the active display hive, as well as taste honey straight from the honeycomb. Murray had relocated a native beehive from the Prep’s garden to the new Years 1/2 garden in the Lower Primary playground. The hive was doing so well, that Murray opened the box and could split the hive to create a second hive, now next to the totems near Belfield Hall.
The Year 1 students had been reading a story called ‘A Good Place’ by Lucy Cousins and were working hard to be good stewards of our planet and St Peters community by caring for the environment. They are now responsible for a new garden bed, Vegepod and worm farm. Watch this space… Well done Year 1s on creating another ‘Good Place’ within our community.
Pollution Police
Students at St Peters are continuing to become more aware of how their actions can impact others as well as their environment. Tuckshop is the major cause of our pollution in the Lower Primary, with countless wrappers, lids and bags accompanying each food delivery. In recent assemblies, staff have shown photos of the amount of litter that can be found around our campus from day to day and have called upon students to take responsibility for their wastage. Students are also being called to have courageous conversations with their peers should they see actions contributing to the mess. The Pollution Police are a volunteer group that sacrifice their lunch play to help clean up our campus. Well done to all these students for their selfless acts. If each member of our community takes responsibility for their own wastage, the Pollution Police should have little to do.

The Arts
Guitar Ensemble Performance
Last Tuesday Dr Tim Gaze presented his Guitar Ensemble to lunchtime students in the PAC Forecourt. This talented group of musicians consists of acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, and drums. The group played three songs; Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Peter Gunn, and Get Lucky.
The student audience was very welcoming, and it was great to finally see this ensemble perform.

Spectrum ‘Meet the Artist’ and ‘Meet the Film Maker’ night on Saturday 21 May featured the works of Year 12 students and was a great success. The audience enjoyed film screenings and the art exhibition.
The Artist statements and introductions to the student films were engaging. The audience enjoyed the creative responses evident in the concepts on display.
The Spectrum Exhibition also showcases artworks from Years 7-11 during the Kaleidoscope season until Friday 3 June.

Last Friday afternoon was our second last round of fixtures for the 2022 season, and we travelled to Moreton Bay College in the rain. With venues indoors, Basketball has been fortunate to play each week. It is no easy task taking on MBC at home, but our girls put up a fight and showed great camaraderie when supporting the other teams. Our 8A & 8B team came away with the only wins on the night but there were many competitive games.
With the QLD School Sport Basketball State Championships held over the last weekend in Toowoomba, our Opens team game was rescheduled to Monday night. We started the day with nine players and with sickness and a plane flight delay we headed to MBC with five players. Our girls, Gabbi N, Toby S, Charlotte B, Sophie B & Kayla G were AMAZING, they went down by 12 but they went down fighting! Coach Mike was super proud, and the girls displayed Plus Ultra and gave their all.
Please Note: Details of our Basketball Break-Up will be provided very soon.
By the Numbers.
5 – The number of girls the Open Team played their game with. 20 - Our 8A girls won by 20 points. 2 - Another close, 2-point loss for our 9B girls, second week in a row! 28 - The number of points our 8B girls scored

Round 8 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
Unfortunately, the rain interrupted the Round 8 fixtures again this week, preventing the QGSSSA round from going forward.
The girls have shown great dedication and resilience by continuing to train wherever possible to stay match fit for the remainder of the season.
This Sunday, 29 May, we will be hosting the annual QGSSSA Old Scholars Cup. This match gives the Open girls the opportunity to take on the best of the best Old Scholars from previous St Peters teams. It would be great to see as much support as possible for this very exciting match. Kick off at 11:00am on Sunday, at Harts Rd Oval.

DATE CLAIMER: 2022 FOOTBALL Dinner – SUNDAY 12 JUNE
Round 8 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
Round 8 was another washed out Round. We have been madly scrambling to find fields to hold our rescheduled games but, unfortunately, we have had no luck. As such, most of the games we have tried to reschedule have resulted in sharing the points with our opponents. However, the 10A team played against St Aidan’s on Tuesday afternoon at Harts Rd Oval and we’re planning to host Brisbane State High School on Monday 30 May with games for the Opens, 9As, 8As and 7As, again on Harts Rd Oval. Due to a scarcity of playable fields, we are unable to play all teams against Brisbane State High School. This week is our final fixture for the season and QGSSSA is celebrating Reconciliation Week. We are so eager to finally be able to play against St Hilda’s at the Gold Coast but, again, we need to ensure that fields are deemed safe so please watch the St Peters App in the event of cancellation. Girls have been asked to bring a gold coin to donate to St Hilda’s Reconciliation Week charity Gunawirra: https://gunawirra.org.au/our-story/.
Details of our Touch Football Break-Up will be provided in due course.
Please CLICK HERE for details of the Round 9 Draw v St Hilda’s for this Friday afternoon/evening – The draw can also be found on the St Peters App.

Community Run Club - Join our Running Community on Friday mornings - meet at 6.30am at the St Peters Bus Stop.
On water training continues this week for all rowers as per the weekly schedule. It is great to see the girls on the water both in the mornings and afternoons, as well as in the gym. As we head towards the end of term, can I please remind families that consistency of attendance both on the water and in the gym is critical in preparation for the upcoming rowing camp and the regattas next term. The more time the girls can spend on the water as crews and individuals in single sculls, the better and more prepared they are going to be for the regattas, and the more fun they have in the long run!
Ergometer and Sculling Trials
Trials, within the context of the Rowing Program, are undertaken based on three factors: ergometer times, sculling times, and attendance/attitude to training. These trials are completed at the BSRA regattas, which are held on a Saturday in Term 3, each age group is divided into divisions (i.e. Year 8, Division 1, 2,3 etc). The goal of these trials is to place each girl into appropriate crews that will be competitive within these divisions at regattas.
NEW DATE - POSTPONED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
Boys Season Celebration and Girls Season Launch | New Rowing Boat Fleet Blessing – Saturday 4 June
Between 4pm - 6pm on Saturday 4 June the Rowing Community is invited to the 2022 Boys Season Celebration, Girls Season Launch and the New Boats Christening.

We look forward to celebrating together with the whole community at this event.
Girls Rowing Camp
The Rowing Camp is an integral event for the girls in a number of ways. Firstly, as a shed and community building event, the time spent away at these camps is generally a highlight as it a fantastic team bonding time where girls are able to spend time and develop lifelong friendships, not only within their year level but from all year levels. Secondly as an important fitness and technical foundation for the crews which leads into the BSRA regattas which start a few weeks after.
Camp this year is between the 18-24 June in Bundaberg.
All transport, accommodation and food will be organised for the girls with forms and costs are currently being finalised. Could I please ask families to put these dates in the diary for the girls to attend.
Thank you girls! Another fantastic week of RG training!
