Holy Father, God of Love, You are the Creator of all things.
We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the sufferings of Our peoples, and we ask your forgiveness. We thank you for the survival of Indigenous cultures
Our hope is in you because you gave your Son Jesus to reconcile the world to you. We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another, as you love us and forgive and accept us in the sacrifice of your Son.
Give us the courage to accept the realities of our history so that we may build a better future for our Nation. Teach us to respect all cultures. Teach us to care for our land and waters. Help us to share justly the resources of this land. Help us to bring about spiritual and social change to improve the quality of life for all groups in our communities, especially the disadvantaged. Help young people to find true dignity and self-esteem by your Spirit. May your power and love be the foundations on which we build our families, our communities and our Nation, through Jesus Christ our Lord

This week we celebrate National Reconciliation Week (NRW). The theme this year is Be Brave. Make Change. a challenge to us all to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all. This is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Almost thirty years ago in the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Australia held its first Reconciliation Week activity - a week of Prayer for Reconciliation. This was an event celebrated by Australia’s major faith communities of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Today Reconciliation Week is celebrated in schools, businesses, and community groups across the country.
National Reconciliation Week is bookended by two key events in Australia’s history, which provide strong symbols for reconciliation: 27 May 1967 – the referendum that saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the census. 3 June 1992 – the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, which recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a special relationship with the land. This paved the way for land rights or Native Title. As we commemorate these significant milestones, we recognise the importance of celebrating achievements in the journey towards reconciliation.
The week reminds us that big changes take persistence and courage and many forms of action.

Reconciliation Week
(Christ) is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. Ephesians 2:14 NRSV
Have you seen a cockatoo lately? A sulphur-crested white cocky, or what about the rarer black cockatoo?
For numerous indigenous peoples throughout Australia, the black and white cockatoos are totem animals for differing social groups and clans.
This is true for the Guugu Yimithirr people of far north Queensland. George Rosendale, a former elder and Lutheran pastor from the Hopevale community, tells the story of the black and white cockatoo and how they reconciled their differences. He writes;
The cockatoos were brothers who lived long ago. When they became men, the black cockatoo realised he was different. He did not like it. He became very angry with his father because he made him black. He decided to change the way things were. One day he was found by his brother, the white cockatoo, sitting under a tree, very upset and angry. ‘What is the matter with you, my brother?’ he asked.
‘I’m very angry with my father,’ he answered. ‘He made you white and he made me black. I don’t like it. I’m going to change my colour.’
He went to his uncle, who lived over the range. He asked him for honey and clay. His uncle gave him what he wanted. He took the clay and made it into powder; then he put the honey all over himself and sprinkled the powered clay over the honey. He looked at himself and said: ‘Now I am like my brother.’
His grandfather, the storm bird, was very angry with the foolish brother. He called the North wind to bring rain. The monsoons came, and it rained and rained and rained, and washed all the clay and honey away.
Later, his brother found him again sitting under the tree, angry, sad and sorry for himself. He said, ‘My brother, you did a foolish thing to hurt our father. We are his sons. He made both of us and he loves us. Come on, be happy! Our father loves you just as much as he loves me. We both belong to him. Be happy and rejoice.’
To this day, the black cockatoos are happy. They even sing while flying and eating.
This sounds very much like another well-known biblical story, the parable of the lost or prodigal son. In this gospel story of Jesus, two differing sons need reconciliation. Reconciliation because their family relationships are broken and fractured. There is anger, there is hurt to the Father and to each other. Forgiveness and restoration are needed.
Reconciliation is needed in our lives too. As humans we are good at creating barriers between differing peoples. However, barriers ultimately lead to tension, hostility, and worse. We only need to think of cities and nations that have physically built walls to exclude differing peoples. Differences between people exist, but belonging to a Lutheran school community, we know that the barriers we create between people can be washed away with God. Like the cockatoo who wanted to change its colour, we are washed clean by God, who loves us equally.
Through Jesus, we are made one, no black or white, no male no female, no Jew no Gentile. We are all equally loved and reconciled to one another and to God. We are given peace and common ground that is beyond the differences and the divisions we develop.
Several years ago, Aboriginal Christian leaders in Australia acknowledged that: “Through Christ, we have the strength to be reconciled to each other and to the land. This means we are involved with Christ in the process of breaking down the barriers that divide Australian Aboriginal peoples from each other and from other Australians in this land.”
In our schools, in our family relationships, in our communities, in our country, Christ is calling us, inviting us to be part of the healing he offers, reconciliation between black and white. How can we walk, as well as talk, reconciliation in deliberate ways?
Lord Jesus, you are the one who calls and invites us into reconciliation. The reconciliation you accomplished on the cross. Heal the divisions and hostilities in our land between people of different race, colour and religion. Forgive us for the barriers and separations we create and give us new ways to put our words of reconciliation into real-life tangible action. In your name, we pray. Amen.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS QUEENSLAND GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT SURVEY
St Peters has been approached to be the pilot school for the Independent Schools Queensland Student Global Engagement Survey (the GE Survey). Developed by ISQ, the survey aims to help schools obtain some benchmark data on student circumstances, experiences, views, and attitudes towards global issues and living and interacting with others in an interconnected world. It assists schools better understand how their curricular offerings, programs and activities contribute to the development of global 21st Century skills.
The survey also gleans students’ knowledge of global and local issues such as conflict, climate change, global pandemic, sustainability, and of the impacts of technological disruption on economic development.
The GE Survey is comprised of 31 questions from the following three focus areas:
Student background information and experience of cultural diversity
Student attitudes and values
Student connection with the world
It is anticipated that the survey will be rolled out in Weeks 8 & 9 of Term 2. The survey is anonymous and will be conducted online. No personal details will be collected from students.
If you would prefer your student not complete the online survey, please email Lisa Chadwick on l.chadwick@stpeters.qld.edu.au before 9am Tuesday 7 June.
Academic Matters
From the Academic Hub
In the midst of a very busy few weeks with assessments, students have done exceptionally well to balance their work and managing their time. Thank you to families that have communicated early with staff in regard to absences and extension requests. We hope that by the end of term, students will have consolidated their learning, completed assessments and are able to move into the holiday period to rest and recover after yet again, another very busy and unpredictable term.
I had the opportunity to attend a variety of classes over the last couple of weeks to witness some of the amazing projects our students have been working on.
Year 7 Ethicool Project
During the week, our Year 7 Digital Solutions students designed a solution to a real-world ethical problem. Groups considered many aspects of their design before presenting to a panel of industry experts. The session was informative, innovative and wonderful to see the Junior High students thinking about the big picture of sustainability, social ethics and solutions. Thanks to Mr Hurwood and the panel of experts.
Year 10 Entrepreneurial Studies
Year 10 Entrepreneurial Studies students spent their lunch time showcasing and ‘pitching’ their innovative and original products and their Market Validation Lunch. The level of thought and detail, practicality and marketing from each of the teams was fantastic. Congratulations to the Year 10 Entrepreneurial staff and students.
Year 12 Art Incursion
The Year 12 Visual Art students attended a full day Art incursion to work on their senior projects. Working with a range of materials and pieces, students were guided with the expertise of Tiel Seivl-Keevers and Mrs Sue Dobrenov. The end of the day result was a visual delight!

Year 6 Canberra Tour
Last week 112 excited Year 6 students met with 15 equally excited St Peters staff to embark on an educational tour of the national capital. After landing in Canberra, we certainly hit the ground running, with all three buses heading in various directions from the airport. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The students and staff did not stop for the next three days enjoying the sights of Canberra including Parliament House (old and new), The Australian War Memorial, a bike ride around Lake Burleigh-Griffin, Government House and Questacon to name a few.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Here are reflections from some of our Year 6 students:
A highlight for me was visiting Government House. We were privileged to meet His Excellency General, the Honourable, David Hurley, AC DSC. He was kind enough to answer all our questions about what his job entails, his wife even sang songs with us! We got to understand more about what his responsibilities are and discovered he is a very busy man. (Dulane 6A)
One of my favourite activities was the War Memorial. I truly enjoyed learning about our past and how people risked their lives for the peaceful life we have today. I especially loved looking at the artefacts, one of them being an old Australian rowing boat from Gallipoli, with traces of gunshots from enemy shooters. (Meera, 6A)
On the last day of the tour, my group went to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). We went to an area called Sportex where there were lots of fun activities like soccer and cycling simulators and a basketball hoop - my favourite was the soccer simulator. After playing there, we went to the gift shop where there was lots of AIS merchandise like toys, balls and water bottles. I bought a water bottle and a mini rugby ball. (Jack G, 6C)
Questacon was really fun; I enjoyed the caged lightning strikes a lot. The best part though, was the plasma ball that, when you touched it, it channelled electricity into your hand. When someone touched you, it gave them a tiny electric shock! (Jemima F, 6C)
Everywhere we visited the children were praised for their manners and thoughtful responses. The tour was a fantastic success. Well done to all our students and a big thank you to the staff who accompanied the Tour.

The Arts
Kaleidoscope 2022 – Camp Fortitude
In a change of scene from previous Kaleidoscope’s, Camp Fortitude told the story of a week away at a camp before school starts. The talented Arts Professionals team, enthusiastic St Peters staff, excited cast of nearly 100 students plus 12 very organised backstage crew worked together collaboratively to create outstanding performances. At Camp Fortitude, students completed a series of challenges and in doing so faced their fears, learn to work together as team, stand up to bullies, make new friends, and build resilience whilst having a great time together. From the upbeat opening song, Best Day of My Life, to the scary dream sequence, Thriller, to the poignant solo in Speechless, and the culminating message of Try Everything, they were great nights of music, dance, and drama.
Many lovely comments were made by those where at the performances including –
She absolutely loved being part of such a special performance. It was amazing!
I just wanted to congratulate you and the teachers and all the students for an amazing effort in the production. We were most impressed with the students and all the behind the scenes work towards the show!!
It was our great privilege to be in the audience on Friday and Saturday nights. From the moment the show was introduced to when the last note was played by the band, we were thoroughly entertained. We were impressed with the energy and professionalism of the people on the stage, the backstage team and the instrumentalists.

AUTUMN FIXTURES
Autumn Fixture for Season 2022 has come to an end and what a challenging season it has been for our Basketball, Football & Touch girls. With the volume of rain received over the seasons, many training sessions were cancelled and due to venue closure, many Football & Touch games were also unable to proceed. We thank all the girls involved, thank you for representing our College and persevering each week as there were many disappointments along the way. These sports would not be possible without our coordinators who have done a great job, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Annie George and Belinda Byrne, our Touch Coordinators, Tim Arnold, our Football Coordinator, and I have had a great team supporting me with Basketball. They have done an amazing job supporting the girls and keeping them up to date with so many cancellations and changes along the way, I am very grateful for all the work you have done. Thanks also to our amazing coaches for giving the girls the opportunity to continue to improve and develop in the Sports they love.
QUEENSLAND INTERMEDIATE VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP
Last weekend nine of our Year 10 Volleyball girls represented St Peters at the Queensland Intermediate Schools Cup in Toowoomba. The team played in the honours division for the first time and finished seventh out of nine teams.
This was their first competition for the year, and it was great preparation for the QGSSSA season. It was pleasing to see the team culture and with their great attitude they all had loads of fun and improved greatly throughout the tournament.
VICKI WILSON PRELIMINARY TOURNAMENT
Well done to our Senior and Junior Teams who have qualified for the Vicki Wilson Final Series which will be played in Term 3. Both teams headed to WDNA in the wind and with depleted teams due to injury and illness and toughed it out to win through to the Final Series. Our Junior team who lost one game in the minor rounds, finished second in their pool and went on to defeat St Peter Claver 12-2 in the playoff game. Our Senior team went through undefeated, finishing top of their pool and won the playoff game against IGGS 7-5. In tough conditions, our girls did amazingly well and represented St Peters with pride.
A big thank you to our coaches Trace and Patti, and Larika for your support, thanks also to the parents for helping with scoring on the day.
DATE CLAIMER: VICKI WILSON FINAL SERIES – Saturday 6 August - Monday 8 August
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Training for all Winter fixture sports is underway.
It is important to watch for emails from your sport coordinator with details of trials and training.
Training schedules will be placed on the St Peters App as soon as they are finalised.
Last Friday afternoon we headed down the highway to take on St Hilda’s for the final round of the 2022 season. After sitting in traffic for 90 minutes, the afternoon began with a special Reconciliation Round ceremony where our girls donated a gold coin to the St Hilda’s charity of choice Gunawirra, in return the girls were presented hair ribbons in the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander colours.
With the courts busting with colour, our depleted teams due to illness & injury did amazingly well. Our Open team, Senior A & 9A teams coming away with great wins, our 10A team with five players went down but fought hard to the end. Our two Year 7 teams may not have come home with wins but the improvement from the start of the season was so pleasing to see.
Well done girls, we look forward to a more normal 2023 season and we must thank our amazing team of QGSSSA Basketball coaches, they are a great team, we thank them for their work this season. Thank you also to all our parents for your support throughout then 2022 season.
Round 9 Wrap - All games cancelled due to unplayable fields
True to form our final round of QGSSSA Touch Football on 27 May was cancelled due to rain-soaked fields. It’s truly been a disappointing Season but, Touch Football women won’t let a little bit of weather keep us down, Season 2023 here we come! The 7A, 8A and Opens did finish the season with rescheduled games against Brisbane State High School on Monday, and were valiant in defeat. We finish the season with only a few teams having played five games out of nine, but most playing only four. Despite this, and limit training opportunities in Term 2, most teams finished in the middle of the ladder. Our 7Bs, though finish 2022 undefeated and joint Premiership winners with Brisbane State High School. Congratulations girls, we’re so thrilled for you.
Well done to all the QGSSSA Football teams on a fantastic season. It has been tricky navigating flooding rain, COVID-19, influenza, along with any injuries that occur during season. The girls have been fantastic in staying committed to the season despite all the interruptions. Round 9 was no exception to this, being called an abandoned round due to field damage right across Brisbane from last week’s rain. As it was the final round of the season, we managed to get some in-house games going on the UQ synthetic fields. It was great to see the girls working together in teams comprising of players across all ages. Luckily, the sun came out towards the end of the week, allowing us to hold the 2022 Old Scholars Cup match on Sunday. The game saw the Open girls get their revenge on the Old Scholars from last year, winning the match 3-2. Thank you to parents, players, and coaches for all your support throughout then 2022 season. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Football Dinner.
