No movie theatre would be complete without some great love story. Perhaps the latest rom-com by Richard Curtis (are you as excited as I am by the possibility of a Love Actually sequel?). Many of us, whether we openly admit it, love the feel-good, hopeful assurance that love is a thing in our loves…that 'love actually is all around', if I can quote Hugh Grant from that movie (yes, Chaplain Kirstin has probably watched the movie too many times).
I’ve been thinking about stories, how they impact us and how various stories weave together into a coherent whole. I began to realise that in many ways life is very like the structure of Love Actually, with many stories weaving in and around and together. These stories finally come together and culminate in the greatest story ever told, perhaps the greatest love story ever told – not exactly a rom-com, a story in a book that’s perhaps a bit too long to make into a two hour movie.
The Bible can be called God’s story - the story of God’s relationship with all people. The story begins with God’s creation of the universe and people, and how God lives in relationship with his people. The Old Testament goes on to reveal the story of God’s relationship with his chosen people, the Israelites. God’s relationship with people is revealed as God calls the Israelites into relationship and provides them with rules for living with God and each other. The stories also reveal the nature of people as they desire for relationship with God, break this relationship and fall away from God and then in times of need return to their relationship with God. Throughout these stories God’s faithfulness, love for and forgiveness of his people remains.
The New Testament contains the story of God present in the world with people, in Jesus. In Jesus, God reveals the plan for completely restoring the broken relationship between God and people. The New Testament contains the stories about Jesus and letters for Jesus’ followers who live out their relationship with God in lives of love and service.
The Bible links together the way in which God revealed himself to his people in the Old Testament, at the time of Christ, and still reveals himself today. It is the story which enabled our school to be built, and the story that continue to weaves through our stories here. This is the story that impacts on the way we live here at school and impacts our spiritual lives too.

MMG Questionnaire
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As part of our continuous improvement process, I wish to provide opportunities for parents (Prep to Year 12), staff (Academic and Corporate) and students (Years 5 to 12) to provide us with feedback relating to their views of St Peters Lutheran College across a wide range of areas.
The research is being conducted by MMG Education, a specialist education consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG’s client schools include many schools across Australia.
Parents were invited to complete a questionnaire which closes tomorrow, Friday 18 June.
MMG Education emailed you an invitation to participate in the review and provide you with your confidential, secure access to your questionnaire.
To ensure confidentiality and to encourage frank and full expression of views:
All responses will be de-identified;
The data will be reported back in aggregated form only; and
All data collected by MMG Education will remain under its control and archived according to research protocols. The College will not be able to access it.
At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education will provide the College with a report. This report will then help to guide the ongoing development and improvement of St Peters.
If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College (l.delaney@stpeters.qld.edu.au).
I look forward very much to the valuable contribution you will be making to this important project by completing your questionnaire.
Yours sincerely
Tim Kotzur Head of College

Service Learning – Rugby
A part of the core of a St Peters education is Service Learning. By engaging in activities with diverse community members, our students develop awareness, make a difference and experience fulfilment in themselves, that has such a positive ripple effect.
Last week, a group of St Peters Rugby students, gave their time and attended the training session of the local UQ Modified Rugby Bullsharks team. The Modified Rugby Program is a world first touch-only form of Rugby for young people with autism or other learning and perceptual disabilities. Our St Peters young men, were leaders, mentors and mates for the young MRP players. The St Peters Rugby players were kind, fun, inclusive, respectful, proactive, enthusiastic and they ensured the MRP players had a great time.
On Saturday, St Peters community hosted a mini exhibition game prior to the St Peters 1st XV vs St Pats. Thank you to the generous St Peters Rugby 2nd team, who formed a tunnel to give the MRP players the full game day experience, to Clayton, Dominic, Jirra, Barney, William, Liam and Eashan who were exceptional as ambassadors for St Peters. A special thank you to Greg and Pip Morton, Trent Hacking and Shaun Nodwell for making this a successful experience for all.
Celebration Month – Identity Week
What does it mean to be a St Peters student? Every day, over 2,200 students arrive at St Peters wearing their uniform with pride. What is so amazing about St Peters is that the College fosters an environment with many different opportunities which allows individuals to excel. Wonderful sporting teams and resources can allow students to achieve their highest athletic ability, as made evident by the achievements of many Old Scholars who have gone on to become Olympians. Our St Peters identity is what makes us special and unique. That is why for this week, we’re celebrating our identity.
Our identity is all about the person we are today. It is shaped by our achievements, our talents, our goals and even by our failures. Our identity is personal; it is a reflection of who we are and sometimes it can be hard to find meaningful ways to express it. As St Peters students, we carry ourselves with a sense of pride in our identity and express it through our uniform. Some of our students use their phenomenal talent to express themselves, like our fashion students! Fashion is one of the most expressive art-forms and it requires the designer to reflect on who they are in order to produce a piece. The amazing work of our Fashion students unfortunately often goes unnoticed, that’s why we decided to host a Fashion Parade today at lunchtime.
The parade included pieces made by Years 7 to 12 students both past and present. Most notably, we showcased funky pants and skirts, hat and bag combos, hoodies and 'Wearable Art' dresses. Each Wearable Art piece had a symbolic meaning attached to it, such as Caitlyn A’s purple fairy dress which was designed to empower the wearer with magic! The students who came to enjoy the event absolutely loved it, with many even inspired to pick up Fashion Studies in their future years at the College. Thank you to everyone who made the Fashion Parade possible, and thank you to everyone who came along and supported it! We look forward to celebrating fashion again next year.
Yesterday, we also had a phenomenal performance from our Drumline in the Chapel Forecourt. Our drummers effectively 'drummed' up attention for Celebration Month, getting everyone keen for the many amazing events ahead. If you’d like to see our drummers perform again, they will be playing before the Boys 1st XI Football game this weekend as part of the Football Focus Round. Come along to Harts Road Oval this Saturday at midday to support our musicians as well as our talented Football players.
Thank you all for supporting Identity Week. Look forward to the next week of Celebration Month where we will be celebrating our Pride in Community!

UQ Engineering Challenge
On Thursday 13 May, 32 Year 10 students participated in the annual UQ Engineering Challenge. The day comprises of a series of eight different challenges which require skills in either practical building or critical thinking. In groups of four, students were assigned their challenge and given either one full-day activity of two half-day activities to complete. Through the challenge students experienced aspects of science and engineering which they would not usually see in their school environment. Each school was judged on their abilities and outcomes for each activity and assigned a score which was then tallied at the end of the day.
Overall St Peters placed second which was an outstanding achievement. Students were highly engaged and really enjoyed the day. It was wonderful opportunity to observe students embracing challenges, working collaboratively and persisting to find solutions.

IB Diploma Program
Did You Know?
In the IB Diploma students have to complete a CAS portfolio, which involves engaging in the three strands – Creativity, Activity and Service. Students at St Peters are already doing lots in each of these areas but CAS lessons in Years 11 and 12 also give students the time to explore other opportunities, for example helping students in a Primary Years classroom (Service), spending the lesson doing something Active (we had a Year 11 IB vs Year 12 IB game of IB Bench Ball in Term 1) or Creative (we often have students knitting, looming beanies for the homeless, sketching or bringing baked goods to class to share) to help ensure their holistic education. CAS is designed to strengthen and extend students’ personal and interpersonal learning.
In Term 2, we hosted an ‘IB Gets Creative’ lesson where all IB students in Years 11 and 12 chose a creative activity to participate in – we had one group learning photography with Mr Cox, another group painting with Mrs Dobrenov, a group looming beanies with the guidance of Year 11 students Harvey and Bruno, a group learning percussion with Year 11 students Justin and Vanina, one group learning origami with Mrs Midgley, a group making a green wall with Ms Liveris and finally a group learning to stitch with Mrs Larney. Each activity got the students doing something new and the students really enjoyed this class time to do something different with their peers.
We look forward to seeing what the IB students get up to for CAS in Term 3.

STAFFING UPDATE
It has been remiss of me not sharing the exciting news that Mrs Kym Izatt is pregnant with her second child and will be commencing her parental leave at the end of this term. I know that you will join with me in thanking Mrs Izatt for her unwavering professionalism and dedication to the wellbeing of our students and families and wish her all the very best as she extends her family by one later in the year.
It is also reassuring to know that Mrs Izatt’s replacement should be named within a week. Watch out for this exciting news!
YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP 2021
Students from Year 6 have recently undertaken an education tour of our nation’s capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The social and emotional skills which are also learned as a result of being away from home, support the building of independence and responsibility, as well as negotiation and compromise.
The trip was a success and a huge thank you to the staff who attended this tour. Taking 121 students interstate for four days is not a small job and every staff member who attends does so selflessly, enthusiastically supporting this experience for the children. A special thank you to Mrs Jenelle King who coordinated the trip and was there in a support role for staff and students.
Some highlights from the cohort were bike riding, Questacon, having Scott Morrison wave to them at Parliament House and Mrs Hurley singing a song with them in the drawing room. One day we woke up to minus six degrees and it slowly warmed up to seven degrees throughout the day which was certainly a big change from our regular Brisbane weather.
The Year 6 cohort were a delight to take away and will no doubt have many stories and memories to share with family, friends and their teachers.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $90.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
UNDER 8s WEEK 2021
‘Play, playfulness and engaged learners' was the theme for our Under Eight’s celebration. We were extremely grateful that the Prep-Year 2 children, parents and staff could come together for a lovely morning of fun.
On Wednesday, the College’s Saints and Singers choir, led by Mrs Christine Taylor, performed at the Lower Primary Chapel service, providing us with great songs, inspiring our younger children.
Thursday’s fun-filled morning began with a Drumline showcasing our talented high school musicians, led by Mr Kerry Jacobson. The children enjoyed a wonderful time exploring and engaging in the awesome activities the Lower Primary Years staff provided, and freely moved around with parent volunteers, who appreciated the opportunity to connect with each other at a school event.
It was a truly wonderful sight to see such happy children, and equally happy parents and staff, participating in a beautiful community morning.
Many thanks to everyone for making this event put a sparkle in the eyes of our gorgeous little ones and their grown-ups!

Junior High News
What a busy few weeks it has been and suddenly we find ourselves with just over two weeks until the end of the term.
EARLY DEPARTURE / DELAYED RETURN
The College understands that occasionally students are absent during term time due to family commitments. The College procedure for Leave: Early Holiday and Late Arrival is clearly explained in the Junior High Handbook (available on Firefly) on p13. In particular, I would like parents to be aware that any assessment missed while on leave may not be able to be made up and parents need to consider this before making travel arrangements. While assignments can be submitted before students leave, the rescheduling of exams is not generally possible and leave to take holidays does not qualify for Special Consideration. If the exam is the only time a particular criteria or concept is formally assessed, missing it will likely affect the student’s overall results. It is therefore highly recommended that you consult your child’s assessment calendar and contact their teachers prior to applying for leave. All leave applications should be emailed to s.leave@stpeters.qld.edu.au Please identify the Year level and Name in the subject line.
Students should have made up their own personal Assessment Record Planner using the information on Firefly. Go to: Firefly → Resources → Secondary Indooroopilly → Junior High Curriculum → Select Year 7, 8 or 9 Curriculum → Assessment Calendar → Assessment Record Planner. Junior High Curriculum
We are quickly approaching the end of term and it is important that students take responsibility for being on top of their assessment.
YEAR 8 NEWS - KALEIDOSCOPE
Congratulations to all those involved in the Year 8 Kaleidoscope production ‘Frenemies!’. The students involved in the performances certainly put on a great show, however, for staff involved, the highlight has been watching the students grow and learn throughout the process.
The rehearsal schedule required commitment, planning and perseverance – but I’m sure you’ll agree that all the hard work was totally worth it. We are so proud of the way in which students have applied themselves during this time. It is clear that many of them have grown in self-confidence as a result.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the wonderful creative team and staff members who worked tirelessly with the students. Congratulations and thank you to Mrs Christine Taylor and the wonderful team of teachers involved for their limitless energy and dedication to our students.
Ironbark Badges
This week at our Junior High Assembly students from 9A and 9B received their commemorative ‘Ironbark Badge’. Assisting with the presentation were members of the Year 9A and 9B Form Class from 2020. The Ironbark Badge is designed to be a tangible link to the Ironbark program at Crows Nest. It recognises the completion of the program which is a significant Rite of Passage in the St Peters educational journey.
It is hoped that the badge is an ever-present reminder of the journey students have undertaken and, as a result, the students will more regularly reflect on the personal growth that occurred and the character strengths developed during the program.
We look forward to seeing students wear their Ironbark badge proudly with their formal uniform.

Year 10s Making Connections
As a part of our Academic Care and Wellbeing Program, last week the Year 10 students participated in the first of a two part workshop focussing on 'Relationships'. Our guest presenter, Peter from UPP (Unleashing Personal Potential), was both engaging and informative as students were challenged to consider both the importance of connection with others and how they can enhance their own relationships. The key message being – Together we are better.
Among other activities and content, It was most pleasing to see the students challenged to connect with others in the Year Level that are not within their normal friendship groups. This connection will be an important contributor in supporting a united and happy student group as they progress though the Senior School.
This workshop also aligns with key topics being discussed in The Rite Journey and will be further developed in HPE lessons next term as part of a significant commitment to student development in this area. I urge parents and caregivers of Year 10 students to discuss this with their students.

The Arts
Spectrum
Spectrum was well attended on Sunday afternoon with students presenting their art exhibition and film screenings.
Year 8 pianist, Mulan M, performed an impressive repertoire to welcome the guests into the foyer.
The content and themes of the works and presentations was most impressive. Congratulations to the students. We look forward to a creative Term 3!
Many thanks to the Hospitality students for providing refreshments.
St Peters Masterclass Series
Piano Masterclass with Angela Turner - Friday 28 May
Students were fortunate to attend the Piano Masterclass with Angela Turner last Friday afternoon. Angela is a lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and she has a multi-faceted career as an educator, performer, and recording artist. In the masterclass Angela Turner worked with some of the College’s advanced piano students – Grace S., Aden G. Victor H. and Panelo H. . The students involved performed their works admirably and were then given expert tips to help them further improve their piano playing, all in front of an audience who also learnt from the experience.
David Mibus St Peters Accompanist and Piano Teacher
Masterclasses for Friday 4 June 3.30 – 5.30pm
This Friday, the College will be hosting two masterclasses –
Violin Masterclass with Michele Walsh (Head of Strings at the Queensland Conservatorium) The Violin masterclass will be held in the PAC Auditorium
Voice Masterclass with Mr Jason Barry-Smith (Australian operac baritone & vocal coach) The Voice masterclass will be held in the Chapel.
A Masterclass is an open lesson in which an expert musician works with several selected students in front of an audience. Each performer will receive feedback and tips on how to improve technique, stylistic interpretation and performance skills etc. The intention is that the masterclass will provide a learning experience for the performers and you as audience members. Those in the audience benefit and learn from watching the performances and hearing the suggestions given to the performers by the expert teacher.

Year 8 Kaleidoscope, Frenemies
Congratulations to the cast of nearly 132 Year 8 students plus eight very organised backstage crew on their outstanding performances of Frenemies last weekend. From the warning message of School Song, to the poignancy of I’ll Be There for You, to the intense emotion of Loathing, to the engaging boys’ dance routine to Get’cha Head in the Game, and the culminating messages of Lean on Me and True Friends, they were great nights of music, dance and drama. Thank-you to the Arts Professionals team and many St Peters staff who supported them throughout the rehearsals and performances.
Many lovely comments were made by those who were in the audience including –
The performance was amazing and every one of the children shone. A couple of standouts that will be interesting to see what happens for them in the future!
The content was so relevant and at times, quite emotional. Well done to you all – it was an incredible production and such a rich experience for each of the students.
A fabulous show, second night even better than the first! And a cohort of energised, excited and delighted Year 8….. it was brilliant!
I know that all of us who attended the performances left feeling proud, impressed, entertained and thrilled about the whole experience.
We loved the performance on Saturday! We were very impressed with the professionalism of the production and the talent / confidence of the children.

P&F Meetings & Support Groups
The Community Grant Program provides funding to support groups and other P&F representatives who are seeking to develop and improve the educational experiences of students at the College. The program provides $75,000 across two rounds.
Grant applications need to meet one of the following criteria:
Increase the number or improve the quality of student equipment and facilities
Increase the opportunities for families to come together to build the St Peters community identity and foster community networks and shared experiences
Develop the capacity for the parent groups to support and assist the College to deliver quality curriculum and co-curricular programs.
Round 1 2021 has now been finalised, and the P&F are proud to provide funding to support the following:
Football Support Group - replacement FFA and FIFA compliant goals for Harts Rd fields, allowing existing Harts Rd goals to be transferred to upgrade Stolz Oval goals.
Rugby Union Support Group - tackle hoops, body wedges and tackle bag equipment to maintain the highest level of safety for students.
Robotics Support Group - five new computers to operate the Micromelon robots more efficiently.
Basketball – specialist skills sessions for all AIC / QGSSSA players, and development of a Primary basketball program.
Softball – glove wraps to better store gloves for increased longevity and foam training balls to enhance training sessions.
Netball – new bibs to maintain high level of presentation of team uniform.
