In today's world, young people are increasingly influenced by the language around them. They commonly hear derogatory terms and offensive language on the streets, social media, streaming services and in some modern music. The widespread use of such language can normalise, glamorise and sanitise harmful words. Using disrespectful language is socially unacceptable and it is crucial to recognise and counteract this trend to prevent its negative impact.

The Year 6 Canberra Tour was a resounding success, offering students an enriching experience that combined education with adventure. This annual excursion is a highlight for many students, providing them with the opportunity to explore Australia's capital city and gain a deeper understanding of their nation's government, history and culture.
This year's tour did not disappoint, with a meticulously planned itinerary that ensured students made the most of their time in Canberra. The trip included visits to significant landmarks such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, the National Gallery of Australia and a beautiful bike ride around Lake Burleigh Griffin. Each site offered unique educational opportunities, aligning perfectly with the Year 6 Curriculum and bringing classroom lessons to life.
Parliament House was a standout destination. Students engaged in a mock parliamentary debate, giving them firsthand experience of the legislative process. They toured both the House of Representatives and the Senate, observing where Australia's laws are debated and enacted. This experience was instrumental in helping students understand the complexities of governance and the importance of active citizenship.
At the Australian War Memorial, students were deeply moved by the exhibits that honour the sacrifices of Australia's servicemen and women. Guided tours and interactive displays provided a comprehensive overview of Australia's military history. The solemn atmosphere of the memorial and the poignant Last Post ceremony left a lasting impression, fostering a deeper appreciation for the nation's history and the bravery of those who have served.
A visit to Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, added a fun and educational dimension to the tour. The hands-on exhibits and interactive demonstrations captivated the students' imaginations, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for science and technology. From robotics to physics, the diverse range of exhibits ensured there was something to interest every student. This year the new Lego exhibit was a real hit!
The National Gallery of Australia offered an artistic interlude, with students exploring the vast collection of First Nations art. Guided tours highlighted significant works and provided insights into the cultural heritage represented in the gallery. This visit encouraged students to appreciate the role of art in society and its power to convey complex ideas and emotions.
In addition to these major attractions, the itinerary included visits to the Royal Australian Mint, the movies, Government House and the Australian Institute of Sport. Each location provided unique learning experiences, from understanding Australia's social history and cultural diversity to seeing how currency is made and appreciating the dedication required for athletic excellence.
The success of the Year 6 Canberra Tour can also be attributed to the excellent support from the Primary Years staff. The dedication and commitment of all staff to providing a memorable and educational experience were evident in every aspect of the tour.
The students returned home with a wealth of knowledge, unforgettable memories and a strengthened sense of camaraderie. The tour not only enhanced their understanding of Australia but also fostered personal growth, resilience and independence. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to bond outside the classroom and create lasting friendships.
This 2024 Year 6 Canberra Tour was a remarkable success, offering a perfect blend of education and adventure. The positive feedback from students, parents and teachers alike is a testament to the tour's impact. It is experiences like these that make education truly meaningful and memorable, inspiring students to become informed and engaged citizens.

National Reconciliation Week: Celebrating Diversity
The following is a brief compilation of the points shared with students during recent presentations at Year-Level, Junior High, and Senior School assemblies:
National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation and acceptance for all Australians.
We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and by playing our part, together we can build positive and respectful relationships that value all members of our College community - their different histories, cultures, and futures.
The most valuable assets at St Peters are not the buildings or the excellent facilities but the people within our community: our staff, our students and our parents. In our diverse school community, we are blessed to have a student population that is representative of a range of individual talents and abilities, different ethnic, cultural, religious and racial backgrounds, different body types, neuro-diversities and so much more. While these differences are valued and celebrated by the community as a whole, they should never serve as a basis for individual discrimination or disrespect from others.
Observations and interactions with students indicate that the vast majority are friendly, polite and well-mannered, respectful, hard-working, inclusive, welcoming of new students, and accepting of others. Of concern, however, are the incidents of teasing, bullying, and harassment that are occurring. Negative so-called ‘joking banter’, even among friends, seems to be on the rise. Hurtful and inappropriate comments about and towards others have been reported that are racist, or sexist, or involve body shaming and other forms of prejudice. These comments and behaviours have no place in our school or our society.
Students have been reminded many times before that each of us has a responsibility to uphold the values of care, dignity and respect towards each other. Inclusivity and kindness start with the simple act of being considerate in our words and actions and being aware of the harm that can be caused when thoughtless or insensitive comments are made. We must all be mindful of the impact our words may have on others and strive to foster an atmosphere of respect and kindness for all.
As a College community, we celebrate our diversity and embrace the richness it brings to our lives. The power to create a more inclusive and compassionate society lies within each and every one of us. We want St Peters to be a place in which everyone feels safe, supported, accepted and valued for who they are, regardless of their racial, cultural or ethnic background, physical characteristics or individual identity. National Reconciliation Week seems an opportune time to highlight this as a goal for us all to embrace.

Kino for Kids | German Film Festival excursion
“Das fliegende Klassenzimmer” (The flying classroom by Erich Kästner) was viewed by eighty-five students studying German across Years 7-9. The Vic Barracks Cinemas hosted the HSBC German Film Festival, and we were able to secure a personal viewing of this popular film along with amazing alpine scenery and historical architecture. Although subtitles were the preferred means of communication, the movie allowed for plenty of recognition of studied language and expanded our horizons of a boarding school in Germany. It was certainly worth the time, even a viewing of the Broncos rugby team on the way back to Roma Street Station capped off a good day. Language Learning can happen in and out of the classroom.

Year 10 Student Achieves Third Prize in Queensland Chinese Proficiency Competition
We are delighted to announce that one of our Year 10 students, Matoom Suteewong, has achieved significant success in the Chinese Bridge – Chinese Proficiency Competition held at QUT Kelvin Grove on 12 May. Matoom earned third prize in Queensland, a testament to his exceptional skills and dedication.
The Chinese Bridge competition is renowned for its rigorous demands, encompassing a language speech contest, a comprehensive written test covering Chinese culture, social science, geography, and history, as well as a cultural performance segment. This day-long event thoroughly assesses participants' endurance and versatility.
Matoom's outstanding performance in such a competitive and multifaceted event underscores his hard work and proficiency. This competition also serves as the Queensland preliminary round for the Chinese Bridge – World Chinese Proficiency Competition, further emphasising the significance of his accomplishment.
Matoom’s achievement aligns perfectly with our Plus Ultra 2025 strategic pillar of fostering global citizens. His success reflects our commitment to providing a supportive environment that cultivates international-mindedness and excellence. We commend his dedication and are excited to see his continued success in future endeavours.

Year 8 Kaleidoscope, The Night of Nights
Over the years, Kaleidoscope has become so successful that it is now one of the key events in the Year 8 calendar and has been described by students as a “rite of passage” in Junior High.
Congratulations to the cast of nearly 100 Year 8 students plus six very organised backstage crew on their outstanding performances of Night of Nights last weekend. From the warning message of 'School Days' to the poignancy of 'Stupid with Love', to the intense emotion of 'Don’t Tell My Mum', to the engaging boys’ and dance troupe routine to a Medley of 50’s Hits, and the culminating message of 'We Go Together,' they were great nights of music, dance and drama. Thank you to the Arts Professionals team and numerous St Peters staff who supported them throughout the rehearsals and performances.
Many lovely comments were made by those who were in the audience including:
In a world that is so often filled with negativity, sadness, and tragedy, what a joy it was to sit and watch a group of young people having the time of their lives. They danced with skill and enthusiasm and told a well-crafted story with a fantastic message with aplomb.
I knew it would be good, but I had no idea that it would be THAT GOOD! Thank you to you and your team for such a fantastic performance but more so, thank you for setting out the commitment from the beginning and encouraging the commitment to the team from the kids. Kaleidoscope is so much more than a musical production – it provided an opportunity for so many kids to shine, it provided a weekend focus that was not schoolwork or sport or gaming with mates. It has created so many great memories for all the kids – wow! My boy in Year 5 and girl in Year 3 are now BUSTING to be in Year 8 so they get to have a go.
Wow – two amazing performances and such a talented cast and crew… It is such a fabulous event for the students. This is the second time around for us as a family and the event continues to get bigger and better. Both of our girls made new friends, learnt to manage their time throughout the rehearsal period, stepped out of their comfort zones and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. And what a wonderful prelude to their Ironbark year ahead. Our daughter spent her five weeks at Ironbark with many of the new friends that she had made at Kaleidoscope and with a confidence in her step that Kaleidoscope had encouraged one year earlier.
It was a joy to watch the soloists… We were so excited to see the actors nailing it, and we appreciated their comedic timing. We were even more impressed with how they recovered when they fluffed a line or didn’t land a roundoff or when their mic didn’t work. They were generous and kind with each other and the audience could feel how much trust was on the stage. The crew were seamless, the costumes were fabulous, and the band and cello accompanist were outstanding.
Countless Year 8 parents I have interacted with expressed to me how amazing and enjoyable they thought the production was. Many couldn't believe the incredibly high standard it was for a school musical, and all voiced how much their children had loved being a part of it... Many said their children were actually teary it had come to an end!

Prep–Year 3 Inter-House Cross Country Carnival
The 2024 Prep–Year 3 Cross Country Carnival was held on Monday 20 May, under bright blue skies and sunshine! What a fabulous event showcasing our youngest students running a Cross-Country course on Stolz Oval. This year, our Prep and Year 1 students completed an ‘obstacle course’ style race, running through, over and under some ‘risk taker’ obstacles. Our Year 2 and 3 students were challenged to run a course on the oval, progressing to a hilly section behind the Basketball courts and concluding along the straight to the finish line. With a strong crowd lining the finish straight, our runners concluded their race to the sounds of cheering from both parents and fellow students. Congratulations to Cunningham, the victorious House on the day!

Student sporting lens
The Student Sporting Lens is a new feature in our Primary Sports Newsletter that features students who have been representing the College in various sports and activities. Students will share their insights into why sport is important to them at St Peters Lutheran College.
This week, Thoma and Annabel, both in Year 6, share their views:
Wearing the St Peter's uniform and representing the College through your talents, words, and actions is a privilege we should all aspire to. Setting a positive example within our community fosters sportsmanship, resilience, thoughtfulness, and respect — values essential not only in school but also in everyday life.
I made the decision to start playing Tennis at age 4 with the goal of becoming World No.1. While tennis consumes much of my time, about 50% of my life is devoted to my passions, while the other half is spent with family and friends, shaping me into the person I am meant to be. Achieving a balance is crucial; pursuing big goals while making time for loved ones helps develop essential qualities like perseverance, determination, and responsibility. Playing sports for St. Peter’s provides the perfect platform to blend the joy of representation with the learning of life's key values.
Playing sports for St Peters is an incredible experience. From enjoying time with friends to training and representing the College, it brings immense joy and countless benefits. I encourage everyone in the Primary Years to give it a try and discover the love for it.

St Peters celebrated Reconciliation Round with a vibrant showcase of culture and community. The Welcome to Country, smoking ceremonies and dance performances by First Nations students, alongside Uncle Gav, created an enriching experience. Both the Rugby First XV on Tuesday and the Football Focus Round on Saturday saw excellent attendance from students, parents and Old Scholars, making the events truly memorable. With St Peters being a rich cultural tapestry it was fantastic to celebrate our Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students and pause to consider the continued work towards reconciliation, to work together for a shared future of equal opportunity and equality of outcomes.
On Wednesday May 29, St Peters shone at the AIC Cross Country Championships, finishing fifth on aggregate with podium finishes in three age groups. Highlights included students achieving personal bests and those who ran to support their teammates, overcoming injuries, illness or first-race nerves. This embodies the essence of Cross Country, where students compete not just against others, but with themselves, striving for excellence and pushing their limits. The spirit of resilience and camaraderie was truly inspiring.
A reminder to keep 11 June free for the Semester 1 Sports Awards. Invitations for award recipients will be sent out in Week 8. Student awards include Most Valuable Player, Coaches, Spirit, Player of the Year and Service to Sport.

The boys' Football Focus Round was a successful event, with St Peters winning seven of the twelve aggregate results. Despite the initial rain, supporters came out in droves to cheer on the First XI. The game was tense, with St Peters creating more chances but struggling to convert these opportunities into goals. Unfortunately, Iona scored late in the second half, securing the three points. The overall strong performance across other matches highlighted the team's determination and skill, making it a memorable round despite the First XI's narrow defeat. Well done to all players and supporters for their efforts and spirit.

Football Season Report
This year has been an outstanding success for girls' Football, with more Junior teams participating than ever before. The dedication and enthusiasm shown by the players were evident in their consistent attendance at both training sessions and games throughout Terms 1 and 2. It's been heartening to see so many smiling faces on the field, as Football has proven to be a wonderful platform for making new friends and fostering camaraderie.
The season was marked by a diverse array of goals during the QGSSSA competitions, showcasing the players' growing skills and teamwork. The Opens team, in particular, had a memorable season, highlighted by a fantastic Focus and Reconciliation round that brought the community together and emphasised the inclusive spirit of the sport.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this amazing Football season. Well done to all the players, coaches, and supporters for making it a truly memorable and successful year. Your hard work and passion for the game have been truly inspiring.

BrainChild Fundraiser
Brain Cancer is an insidious disease impacting just over 7 out of every 100,000 Australians. Sadly, 200 children are diagnosed with a brain or spinal cord tumour annually, with brain cancer killing more children than any other disease. Survival rates are low, only 22%, but for people with glioblastoma brain cancers, there is only a 5% chance of surviving five years post-diagnosis. Furthermore, brain cancer has the highest total burden of disease for adolescents and young adults, costing $1.7 million per person (Cure Brain Cancer Foundation 2024). St Peters Lutheran College can help support individuals and their families battling this disease. The BrainChild Foundation provides families with emotional, educational and financial support through The Better Tomorrows Program, family camps, respite, research and treatment. Our goal is to raise $2271, one dollar for every student enrolled at St Peters Lutheran College. Please help us to provide better tomorrows for kids with brain and spinal cord tumours.
