Innovation is a key strategic pillar of the College’s new Strategic Intent Plus Ultra 2025. The Intent of this pillar is to ‘foster a culture of Innovation that aligns with our Mission’. Innovation is part of the DNA of St Peters. The decision to start a co-educational school in 1945 was at the time a bold, daring and innovative decision, and was the first of many innovative approaches and programs that have characterised a St Peters education. Computer Education, Middle Schooling, Human Relationship Education, Physical Education and Ironbark are all examples of Innovations where St Peters led the State, and some cases the nation in terms of educational developments. In order for St Peters to remain at the forefront of education and flourish, we must continue to embrace innovation.
One of our key strategic initiatives of the Pillar of Innovation is to ‘implement design thinking, innovation and enterprise skills and entrepreneurial learning within the curriculum.' The development of these skills and mindsets in our students is important because of the disruption we have seen and will continue to see in relation to the world of work. In order to thrive and flourish in such an environment today’s students will require such enterprise skills and entrepreneurial mindsets.
We have already made good progress on this strategic initiative. In Year 10, instead of studying a traditional Business Studies course our students have the opportunity to take a Entrepreneur Class where as a culmination to their learning, they get to pitch their ideas, products and prototypes to the community through market stalls at lunchtime. In Year 7, all our students undertake a unit known as ‘EthiCool’ where in small groups they have to develop a product or service that utilises technology in order to solve a health problem. As part of developing the product the students have to develop a marketing and communications plan in order to take it to market. To create an element of authenticity each group has to pitch their idea to an external panel Shark Tank style. Another example of how the College is bringing this initiative to life is with a group of girls in Years 4 to 7 who have nominated to take part in the Tech Girls Movement that will prepare them for a future where they will lead and innovate across STEM fields. The girls have been working in teams to investigate an issue and find a solution that can be delivered through an app, which they will design and code. Teams are partnered with a coach and an external female mentor who works in the field of STEM. They have a weekly link up to discuss how their projects are going, and receive some advice from their mentors.
In pursuing this Strategic Intent the College is endeavouring to prepare our students for their future. To quote renowned author about human behaviour, Daniel Pink, ‘The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind—creators and empathisers, pattern recognisers and meaning makers. These people …. will now reap society’s richest rewards and share its greatest joys’.

Celebrating Community
Our student leaders have declared June a month of celebration and this week the focus was on community.
St Peters is an amazing diverse, multicultural, multilingual, colourful community, bringing together people from all over the globe to share a part of their educational journey and to become part of a community. Our forebears had a vision to educate boys and girls together in a Christian setting, where they could hear of God’s love for them in Jesus Christ. And so, we receive much more than an education at this place, we receive the gift of a community and the opportunity to learn from each other and to learn to live together peacefully within all the diversity, to respect one another and care for each other and so be prepared for a life in an ever more globalised world.
The glue that binds us together is the love of God, who created each of us individually and who loves each of us equally.
We recently celebrated Pentecost, the birthday of the church, where people from all around the Mediterranean who had gathered in Jerusalem, heard the message of God’s love in Jesus Christ in their own heart language and were moved to believe and join the small band of disciples in following Jesus. The Spirit created a new community of love, a community that reflected that divine love and so made a difference in the world. Today we are invited into that community and to receive and reflect that ongoing never-ending love of God. St Paul uses the image of a body, where each member is important and plays a part and he notes that in that community: If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it. (1 Cor 12:26)
May we continue to grow as a community in our connection to each other and God and let his love bind us together.
Pastor Thomas

MMG Questionnaire
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As part of our continuous improvement process, I wish to provide opportunities for parents (Prep to Year 12), staff (Academic and Corporate) and students (Years 5 to 12) to provide us with feedback relating to their views of St Peters Lutheran College across a wide range of areas.
The research is being conducted by MMG Education, a specialist education consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG’s client schools include many schools across Australia.
Parents were invited to complete a questionnaire which closes tomorrow, Friday 18 June.
MMG Education emailed you an invitation to participate in the review and provide you with your confidential, secure access to your questionnaire.
To ensure confidentiality and to encourage frank and full expression of views:
All responses will be de-identified;
The data will be reported back in aggregated form only; and
All data collected by MMG Education will remain under its control and archived according to research protocols. The College will not be able to access it.
At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education will provide the College with a report. This report will then help to guide the ongoing development and improvement of St Peters.
If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College (l.delaney@stpeters.qld.edu.au).
I look forward very much to the valuable contribution you will be making to this important project by completing your questionnaire.
Yours sincerely

Celebration Month – Community Week
Our Community here at St Peters is one that generations of families have been a part of since the College’s opening in 1945, with some current students even being third generation Scholars! If you ask Old Scholars and current students, what is your favourite thing about St Peters? they often respond, the sense of community. St Peters prides itself in cultivating a welcoming and ever-expanding community through Sports, Music, and social occasions.
Community is all about the people who are willing to support you and you are willing to support back. This is the pinnacle of our College community: despite our differences, we are able to come together as one unified community. Our community is shaped by every individual, each bringing their own identity and sharing it with everyone. Our community is also defined by our strong school spirit. We rally together and support each other while wearing our St Peters uniform with pride.
This Celebration Month, we’ve celebrated our College community throughout this week. On Tuesday lunchtime, the Jazz Combo kicked off Community Week with a stellar performance in the PAC Amphitheatre. Everyone who came along had an amazing time, with some dancing along to the music! Thank you Combo for performing as part of Celebration Month. If you’d like to see Combo perform again, they will be playing at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Sunday 4 July at 3:30. Tickets will be available on the Brisbane Jazz Club website closer to the date. Look out for those tickets to support our talented students!
Also, yesterday lunchtime, the Social Justice committee hosted a Community Focus Day to raise funds for the Indigenous Immersion Program - Red Centre 2021. All money raised from yesterday will go directly to the school that students will be visiting these holidays, supporting them to build new facilities, purchase educational resources and stationery, and fund new teachers. In total, we raised over $1,100 which is absolutely phenomenal! Thank you so much to everyone who bought something yesterday and to our Social Justice committee for organising the fundraiser. We wish the best to our Indigenous Immersion students on their tour these holidays.
This concludes the Community Week of Celebration Month. Check out next week’s Rock to find out how we celebrated our Culture!
Vinesh N & Emma W 2021 Students 4 Students Captains
Earlier this term several Years 7 and 4 classes worked collaborative over the course of three weeks to complete a STEM Challenge. Their challenge: 'What would you do if your town’s water supply was cut off due to an equipment failure or natural disaster?'
With the assistance of Year 7s, the Year 4 students designed and created a prototype of a device that could manually pump water during an emergency. This gave the opportunity for Year 7 students to practice and enhance their soft STEM skills that are essential for effective team work. Their responsibilities included, Team Facilitator, Stenographer and Public Relations Officer. At the end of the three weeks all groups presented their prototype with the assistance of the Public Relations Officer who pitched to the town people the value and viability of their prototype.
It was a busy three weeks and fantastic to observe the interactions and productivity of all students. In the coming weeks the groups will be reassigned a new challenge and Year 7s will be responsible for coding and printing 3D devices that can be incorporated in the Year 4s project. Watch this space.

STEM CONFERENCE
Last week, two STEM conferences were held in Toowoomba and attended by several St Peters students in Years 7-9. Wednesday's Youth Entrepreneurs and STEAM conference was held at St Mary’s College. The intent of the conference was to bring together young men to enable them to connect with inspiring industry role models and solve real life design challenges. Guest speakers included Dr Derek Long who is at the forefront of how drones, robotics and machine vision can be used to monitor and improve agriculture and, Professor Jonti Horner, whose interests include the search for planets orbiting other stars.
On Friday, 'It takes a Spark' conference was held at St Saviour’s College. The intent of the conference was to bring together young ladies to connect with inspiring industry role models and solve social justice design challenges. Guest speaker, Megan Gilmour, spoke about her journey in developing Australia’s first telepresence robot initiative connecting students with serious illness to their classrooms. This was such a great opportunity for students to hear a very inspiring speech from a social innovator.
Both conferences were incredibly interesting and gave students the opportunity to participate in real-life problem-solving challenges. Many thanks to Mr Bygraves who was gracious enough to drive us to and from Toowoomba.

Primary Years News
PYP Evaluation Summary
Earlier this year in March, the Primary Years underwent its first IB Evaluation for the PYP (Primary Years Programme). This was the result of a significant period of self-study during which the teachers reflected on their teaching programs and practice and its alignment to the Standards and Practices of the PYP. The three-day Evaluation visit involved class visits, meetings with leadership, teachers, students and parents as well as sharing a substantial amount of documentation. It was a significant and thorough undertaking, especially as it had to be completed virtually.
The feedback during the exit meeting at the conclusion of the Evaluation was incredibly positive and reaffirming of our practices and pedagogy. Very recently we received the formal report highlighting practices that the school has demonstrated outstanding practice in and some areas for further development. Over all, the Primary Years attained 15 commendations. These ranged from the way our school reflected the philosophy of the IB, our resources and systems, our practices for student support, the planning processes our teachers engage with and the openness and reflective nature of our staff. Some of the comments were:
“The school community are passionate about the programme and are highly committed to quality implementation.”
“All members of the school community are committed to supporting purposeful inquiry that engages students actively in the learning.”
“Open communication, respectful relationships, and mutual respect underpin interactions between all stakeholders in the school.”
“The school as a community of learners is dedicated to a joint responsibility in supporting all students’ personal and social development.”
“The school has created an inclusive learning support model, where all teachers take responsibility to ensure barriers to learning are removed for students.”
“The school provided well-built support, systems and resources to allow technology and the library to play a central role in a dynamic programme.”
Areas for growth were also identified in the report and reassuringly, these aligned with areas that the staff had already recognised through the self-study process. These included: ensuring that the five essential elements of the PYP are reflected in all documentation and assessment, revisiting our report card such that it better reflects these elements, and reviewing how we further emphasise the importance of mother tongue within the community.
Shortly, we will review these commendations and recommendations as a staff and leadership team and prioritise our action plan for the next five years to ensure growth and development and prepare our next Evaluation.

Lower Primary Library
Thank you for the warm welcome to St Peters - it was so lovely to meet many of you at the Under 8’s morning recently. Being an Old Scholar of St Peters, starting work as the Teacher Librarian in Lower Primary has been somewhat like ‘coming home’ and it is lovely to walk the grounds and see the changes, as well as the things that have remained the same. I have many great memories of the Langer Library from my time at St Peters and it is an honour to now be a part of the library team. With the Lower Primary Library, Woodrow Library and Langer Library, St Peters students are well catered for with reading material and research skills.
As I put my own spin on the Lower Primary library, students have enjoyed my constant furniture and display changes as I work out what areas they most like to access and how best to support them in their individual reading journeys. We now have a new and ever-growing graphic novel collection, an expanded picture book collection and I am greatly enjoying adding to the already strong chapter book and non-fiction collection. More furniture shifting and tweaks are underway so do watch out for my ‘library under construction’ signs!
A contemporary school library should be welcoming, well-resourced with books and online resources, full of energy and not at all silent. The Lower Primary library is a hive of activity during lessons and at lunchtime and parents and carers are encouraged to visit before or after school if you would like to read with your children, chat books or borrow extra library books for home recreational reading.
Look out in Term 3 for all the Book Week 2021 news including author visits, competitions, bookish dress ups and a focus on supporting young people in the wider community to become readers through the work done by The Pyjama Foundation.

Senior School Ethics Olympiad
After months of preparation, Year 11 students Felicia, Melinda, Brekken & Lachie represented St Peters at the Senior School Ethics Olympiad in May.
They collaborated to compete against schools from across Queensland, facilitated and supported by Ethics professionals from universities across the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
The team had prepared their ethical arguments very well and impressed the judges with their knowledge of ethics, skills participating in ethical discussions and fantastic teamwork.
I am delighted to announce that, after tying with the team that eventually won the competition, our team came fifth in the state, and St Peters is now ranked third in the State for Senior Ethics. We also received an honourable mention from the judges for our ability to engage in Ethical discussion
The Arts
An Afternoon at the Movies – All Bands
Last Sunday the Dron Auditorium played host to an afternoon of music, movies and costumes from the St Peters Band program. Superheroes, movie stars and iconic movie characters all took the stage to take the appreciative audience on a journey through the exciting world of music in film.
The concert started with our percussion program. Junior, Intermediate and Senior Percussion Ensembles performed excerpts from iconic films including, Mission Impossible, Tarzan and Harry Potter. Not to be outdone Junior, Intermediate and Senior Stage Bands performed classic tracks from The Blues Brothers, Rocky and The Incredibles. All performances were matched with iconic scenes from these Academy Award winning movies.
After a brief change over the Concert Band program took over the entertainment. Concert Band 2, Concert Band 1, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds all looked amazing; dressed in costume and complimented with theatrical lighting and our new music stand banners. Thank you to the St Peters P & F Community Grants Program for providing this long-awaited upgrade to our stage presentation.
All concert bands provided incredible accompaniment to scenes from blockbuster movies including Mary Poppins, How to Train Your Dragon, Star Wars and Toy Story. A huge thank you to the 501st Legion for their amazing (screen accurate) appearance from Kylo Ren, Boba Fett and a squad of Storm Troopers.
It was great to see all students and staff adding to the atmosphere by dressing as their favourite screen characters. A big thank you to our incredibly talented and hardworking conductors, Mr Jacobson (Sgt Pepper), Mr Pradella (Dartanion), Mr Rich (Maverick) and Ms Scanlon (Hermione). The success of the evening would not have been possible without the support from our Music Staff - Mrs Taylor, Mr Deacon, Ms Saffery, Ms Milner, Ms C Saffery, Mrs Greenwood and Ms H Deacon.
Here are a few photos from the event, courtesy of Kevin Dreise (Photo 45) and Mat Gilfedder. Their incredible talent captured so many special moments from the afternoon.

St Peters WDNA Netball season is underway! Term 2 WDNA Training will continue each Wednesday afternoon throughout Term 2. It will be great to see the St Peters girls in the Maroon and White at the WDNA courts again in 2021.
On Tuesday night our 2021 Open Basketball team played their last game for the season. For the first time this year St Peters entered our Open team into the Silver GBL Competition played every Tuesday evening. Over the 19 Round Season, the growth of all our girls has been impressive to watch. We thank Coach Mike for his dedication to our QG Basketball Program; not only does he teach the girls the game of Basketball, he teaches life lessons for us all.
Congratulations to our Open Girls Basketball Team on another strong season that displayed incredible growth. Our Girls embodied our Pillar of 'Leaving the Jersey in a better place' with their commitment, dedication and growth mindset. The Girls finished the QGSSSA season in third place with a record of five wins, two losses and a draw. The future is certainly bright with the young team returning the majority of its core for next year. A huge congratulations to our Seniors, Leila J and Alice J, who finished their St Peters careers and were outstanding ambassadors of our program.
This year St Peters will be entering an U13 and U15 teams into the All Schools Touch Competition to be held in Term 4 down on the Gold Coast. Trials were held on the last Monday training session of the season and squads of 14 have been selected and will be named next week. This exciting opportunity will give many of our girls the opportunity to develop their Touch game.
The first QGSSSA Old Scholars match proved to be a huge success! It was fantastic to see so many graduates keen to come back and get involved in the sport they loved so much during their time at St Peters. Due to (potential) fitness restrictions, the game was played in three 20-minute quarters instead of the usual 30 minute halves. The Old Scholars came out firing and put away the first goal early on. The open girls showed a lot of heart and wanted the first win desperately. Unfortunately, they went down in a 2-1 victory to the Old Scholars with Brie Duseau having a star performance in putting away both goals. A big thank you to all the supporters who came out to watch and to all of our Old Scholars for making the time. To our current year 12’s, we hope to see you back next year on the other side!

What a fantastic Saturday of St Peters Boys Sport. Last weekend all AIC Colleges recognised the importance of our diversity in cultures within our schools and as such we hosted Reconciliation Round (Round 6). It was great for us all to come together and celebrate as a St Peters community and recognise the importance of each individual within our community. To have our St Peters boy and girl boarders strongly featured in opening ceremonies and public addresses across both Football and Rugby epitomises the importance of this special sporting event.

St Peters P&F Sip & Scarf Workshop
The P&F Committee proudly hosted our first Sip & Scarf Workshop to bring our community together and raise awareness and funds to support the Cancer Council’s vision of a cancer free future.
The workshop was a great success thanks to the wonderful St Peters Art Department. Sherrie Knipe and Julie Seidel hosted the workshop, teaching us how to make beautiful wool cobweb scarfs. Sherrie simplified the process into easy steps and offered ideas so we could be creative with the colours and design. We were amazed to see how soft wool tops were transformed into warm scarves which are coming in very handy right now! We took home equipment that we can use to try to make more scarves at our leisure.
Many thanks to Kathryn Lorraway (Community Liaison Officer) and all the staff from St Peters Events, Catering and Art Departments.
Thanks also goes to all who supported the event by attending and donating online. You can still donate here to help us reach our fundraising goal of $1,000. Thank you to the wonderful donors that have already helped us. Proceeds from all P&F Workshops will go towards supporting the Cancer Council.
Our next sold-out event is the Sip & Sculpt workshop on Tuesday 27 July at 6pm. We are close to having enough people on the waitlist to do another Sip & Sculpt workshop in Term 3. Please email Kathryn Lorraway (K.Lorraway@stpeters.qld.edu.au) if you are interested in the second Sip & Sculpt workshop.
