Round 6 saw our AIC boys meet St Laurences College on the weekend with our Chess and Senior Rugby and Football teams traveling away. Our Chess boys met with an unexpectedly tough opposition and on Saturday, our Rugby and Football teams had some great aggregate team victories. Both of our 1st Rugby and Football matches were hotly contested and our boys showed courage under fire narrowly losing in the Football and working hard to the final siren in the Rugby.
With our final round of Term 2 sport happening this weekend against St Patricks College, I would like to wish all of our boys the best of luck and I thank you for your work this season.
Looking forward to our Term 3 AIC sporting season, it is important to understand that our Tennis trials and Basketball training has already started. I need to see more numbers attend our Basketball training sessions as our Coaches need to be able to start making team selections. There have been a handful of boys who have contacted me already saying that they aren’t available to train in the next week and those boys have been managed on a personal basis. All other boys who play Basketball and Tennis are simply expected to be at their training sessions unless they have contacted their coordinator or myself.

Congratulations to the Year 9 team who continue their winning ways overpowering their opposition to claim a 27-19 victory over SLC. Their fourth victory of the season secures them a top three finish in the competition. Their opponents on Saturday will be coming into this round with only one win under their belts, so we look forward seeing a good finish to the season from these boys.
The mighty St Peters 3rd XV went down in a heartbreaking encounter this week. We fought valiantly and should be exceptionally proud of the effort put forth by our team. These boys have really pulled themselves up by their bootstraps this season and considering we nearly didn’t have a second open team this year, this group of young men have not only got a team together and have trained and played hard, but they have certainly exceeded expectations managing to get a couple of upset wins along the way.
The 1st XV displayed patches of brilliant play, ultimately going down to a strong SLC team. Jimmy S showcased his speed intercepting a speculative pass and returning it 80m to score under the posts. After sustaining injuries to key positions, the replacements stepped up and they can be proud of the efforts shown on the field. Another try by Clayton G kept our opposition honest.
Training and game times can be found on the St Peters App, if you have any further questions please feel free to contact one of the Coordinators listed above.
FOOTBALL
Coordinator: Mr Nathan Edwards – n.edwards@stpeters.qld.edu.au
We had a solid weekend of Football against SLC on Saturday, with five wins, three draws and four games being lost by only one goal. Well done to our 9A, 9B, 7A, 5A and 5C teams on their wins on the weekend.
Our First XI had two wins on the trot leading into Saturday’s match. With four of our boys playing away at the Queensland Schools Championships over the weekend, our Coach John McCain, did a lot of shuffling and decision-making leading up to Round 6 in order to put our best team on the paddock. The match was a 50/50 battle and was anyone’s game. Well done to Zane P (Year 10), on his first goal as a 1sts player. Our opposition put a lot of pressure on our Captain Paddy C and he often found himself in physical contests throughout the game – something that Paddy is certainly no stranger to. With the scores level at 2-2, Paddy found himself on the ground after a tackle which could have been called either way by the referee. In this instance, play on was called and SLC went on to score not long after that. An offside call against us sealed our fate and our boys were on the losing side finishing the game down 2-3. It was a great effort.
This weekend sees our 9Bs have an opportunity for a premiership and our 10A, 8A and 8C teams, a possible top three finish for the season. Good luck to these boys and all of our Football cohort for their final round of the season this weekend against St Patricks College, here at home.
CHESS
Coordinator: Mr Gil Bygraves – g.bygraves@stpeters.qld.edu.au
A short trip to perennial powerhouse SLC on Friday afternoon proved a tough afternoon for the St Peters AIC Chess squad. The Opens, after leading at halftime, dropped their first game of the year to set up a last round tilt at the Open Premiership – win, and they will share the prize. The closest Chess game came again to the Seniors with some hard fought matches but both Sen A and Sen B teams went down. The Intermediate A and B teams continued their strong form with good wins against strong competition. This week sees the last round against St Patricks at home and with both Opens and Intermediate A in contention.
AIC BASKETBALL
Coordinator: Mr Grant Carlson - g.carlson@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Pre-season training is underway and our teams are preparing for the upcoming AIC Basketball season. One of the great strengths of our program is the wealth of expertise and knowledge that our coaching mentors are providing to our teams and their respective team coaches. Brian Kerle, Kirron Byrne and John Dean are our mentors for this season, with our coaches and players being able to take full advantage of their knowledge and experience with the game at the highest levels. One of the main philosophies of St Peters Basketball is that excellence is achievable through gradual improvements and our teams are utilising this mindset towards preparing themselves for some significant achievements in their AIC matches during Term 3.
The St Peters Basketball Clinic 2019 is scheduled over three days from 24-26 June in the St Peters Gymnasium. This clinic is open to all boys in Years 5-12 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm each day. Cost is $65 per student and includes a basketball for each participant to take with them. This clinic is a fantastic opportunity for St Peters Basketballers of various ages to take part in numerous skill based games and player specific drills and coaching from our coaches and mentors. Please don’t hesitate to make contact if you have any queries regarding this clinic or anything within the St Peters Basketball program, and keep an eye on The Rock newsletter and also the St Peters App for vital updates and calendars.
Lastly, Brian Kerle who is one of our Coaching Mentors, is conducting several Basketball clinics over the school holidays. These clinics are another great opportunity for boys (and girls) to get some extra work done over the school break. See flyers attached.
