I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation from Paralympian Gold Medalist Kurt Fearnley. On so many levels Kurt’s story is an inspiring one. In 2009 he literally crawled the gruelling 96km through the mud, hills and forests of the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. I really can’t begin to comprehend how physically, emotionally and mentally taxing this experience would have been. As Kurt shared this part of his story he made the point that "hard is ok".
These three words really resonated with me. In these three words, Kurt was making the point that we should expect to be challenged in life. He was suggesting that facing obstacles, having to problem solve and persevere are important parts of life. For Kurt, grappling with the unknown, sitting in the ‘learning pit’ and stepping out of his comfort zone was crucial to shaping him into the person he is today.
It is easy to fall into the trap in our work and in our learning to feel that life should be easy and comfortable all the time. If we expect that things will be this way all the time, if we exist purely in our comfort zone then we don’t grow as people. Being challenged and stepping out of our comfort zones in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field and at Ironbark is an important part of a St Peters education.
The St Peters motto of Plus Ultra makes clear that high expectations about learning and behaviour, hard work to master our learning, challenging ourselves with things that we are unfamiliar with and commitment to see things through to completion are important to the development of fine young St Peters people. At times what we encounter and expect of our young people both in and out of the classroom will be hard. Hard is ok. Hard is ok because it helps us to grow to become the best possible version of ourselves.

In this edition of SchoolTV - EXAM JITTERS
Every year, more and more emphasis is placed on achieving good results in exams causing many students to feel extraordinary pressure and have unrealistic expectations. This month on SchoolTV, parents will find advice on how to help students cope with the pressure and how students can work smarter to achieve the results they desire.
Exams are like a game. Once you know how to play the game, your chances of achieving great results rapidly increase. Parents can learn how to assist their kids to maintain perspective and keep their sanity intact during exam time.
Diet, exercise and sleep all play an important part in helping a student balance a busy schedule and study smarter. Keeping stress levels to a minimum and reducing anxiety can be easily achieved through careful planning and having a supportive environment.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Forgiveness
"Forgiveness holds us together through good and bad times and it allows us to grow in love," Henri Nouwen.
Today in Year 7 Chapel we are looking at an episode in the life of Peter. I love Peter. The way the gospels tell his story suggests that he quite often acted or spoke without thinking things through. His passionate enthusiasm meant that he found himself in all sorts of scrapes. But the focus of his story today is on Matthew’s gospel account of Peter asking Jesus about forgiveness.
Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”
“No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!"
What do you think about forgiveness?
Academic and author Kate Bowler reminds me in her blessing titled, 'A blessing when you need love to conquer hate', that we all do something with the hurts and offences that come to us. Some of us find, as Kate says, "it escapes our lips as invective, others of us find it gets buried and stored up as bitterness."
Sometimes we find it easy to forgive, other times it feels like we might never be able to let it go.
I am very much aware that members of my own family deal differently with hurt. Some explode, whilst one member of my family has a memory like an elephant and is likely in a raw moment to bring up something you said or did three years ago.
I think Jesus knew that forgiveness had to be a daily practice, a way of encountering one another because sometimes it’s really hard work. Often it’s a process that happens over time, not an action that’s done and dusted in a moment.
I really resonate with something Dr Brené Brown says about conflict in relationships. Even when we feel someone else has done the wrong thing, Brené says we should always ask the question, “what’s my part in this?”.
The more time we spend with people, the more we become aware that an orientation towards forgiveness as well as owning our own capacity for contributing to conflict is essential. Some of our Year 7 students might encounter this reality on camp next week!
Returning to Henri Nouwen’s words, "Forgiveness holds us together through good and bad times and it allows us to grow in love."
We began with Peter asking how many times he had to forgive. And whilst Jesus basically says we just have to keep on forgiving, I’m reassured that primarily Jesus wanted people to know that we’re all forgiven, that God’s love is big enough to hold all the hurt, pain and anger, it’s big enough to hold us when we’ve been wronged and when we have wronged.
God, please help us to learn forgiveness. Remind us that you journey with us as we learn to live well together and to love one another.

IB Gets Creative
As part of their CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) program, last Friday 2 June our Years 11 and 12 IB students spent some time focussing on their creative sides. As part of this initiative, students chose what creative element they wanted to explore for a double lesson. Students could learn the new skills of crocheting or looming beanies (which proved to be quite challenging), they could relive their childhood constructing Lego (thank you Mr Glass for the loan of the Primary Years Lego), make loom bands or could explore their artistic, musical or theatrical side thanks to cardboard recycling art with Mrs Seidel, drumming with Mr Bowers and Theatresports thanks to Luke V. Overall, this was a very positive experience and provided each student with time together and also a creative reflection for their CAS portfolio.
Thank you goes to Mrs Midgley, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Maynard, Mrs Seidel, Mr Sutch and Mr Bower for their help in organising and running this event. Well done to all students for making the most of this opportunity outside the regular classroom.

Reconciliation Week
During Reconciliation Week, a group of First Nations students embarked on a journey of understanding as they visited our prep classes last Friday. Eager to share their rich cultural heritage and foster meaningful connections with the broader community, our Indigenous students and staff arrived with open hearts and minds.
The students, both young and not-so-young engaged in various activities that allowed them to connect in friendship and culture.
The Prep Centre visit provided an invaluable opportunity for our First Nations students to strengthen their cultural identity, embrace their heritage and build bridges with the wider community. Through genuine interactions, they forged connections with our youngest students, fostering empathy, understanding and respect.
Year 5 Community Convention
Year 5 students have embarked on a journey of discovery and creativity as they delved into their 'How We Organise Ourselves' Unit of Inquiry. Together, they eagerly immersed themselves in the task of redesigning and repurposing Peppermint Gully, an imaginary piece of land nestled within the picturesque Macedon Ranges area of Victoria. Armed with critical thinking, design skills and deep consideration for community, environment and economy, the students were determined to breathe new life into this landscape and share their visions at a Community Meeting.
The students' inquiries were made all the richer as they embraced the vibrant learning environment of the Centre for Learning and Innovation. Within its dynamic walls, the flexible learning spaces allowed them to collaborate and foster a spirit of creativity and ingenuity. The culmination of their designs, the Community Convention, stood as a testament to the critical thinking, curiosity and academic rigour that underpin our Primary Years teaching and learning program.
Thanks must go to our Year 5 teachers, Miss Alanah Miles and Mrs Christina Wheeler for their planning and organisation of this wonderful learning opportunity for our Year 5 students.
Years 4 – 6 Athletics Carnival Canteen
On 16 June, Years 4 – 6 will participate in their annual Athletics Carnival. For the ease and flow of the day, the canteen will not be available. Students will not be permitted to visit the canteen to purchase food or have online orders on this day.
Canberra Tour PACER rebate
Students from Year 6 recently enjoyed an educational tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $90.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We continue to remain grateful for the opportunity provided to our Year 6 students as they visit Canberra each year.

On Monday May 29 the Year 8 Japanese cohort embarked on an excursion to the enchanting Japanese garden at Mt Cootha, accompanied by their pre-ordered Japanese Obento. The students immersed themselves in serene zen moments, relishing delectable food and delightful company amidst the picturesque surroundings. Following lunch, the Year 8 Japanese learners engaged in a scavenger hunt, allowing them to fully appreciate and observe the design and landscaping of the garden, thereby deepening their understanding and admiration for Japanese aesthetics.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teachers and the invaluable support from the Year 8 parents, whose hard work made this excursion a resounding success. The smiles on everyone's faces and the sparkle in their eyes serve as testimony to the wonderful memories created for both teachers and students alike.皆さん、お疲れさまでした!

Reconciliation Through The Year 10 Chinese Language Immersion Excursion Experience
In a delightful confluence of events, St Peters students took part in a meaningful and engaging exploration of Taiwanese Indigenous culture during their Year 10 Chinese Language Immersion excursion, coinciding perfectly with Reconciliation Week. The trip, which included a visit to the Sunnybank Multicultural Gallery offered the students an enriched learning experience, weaving together different cultural traditions, languages and histories.
The journey began with a visit to the Sunnybank Multicultural Gallery, where vivid exhibits depicting traditional costumes, musical instruments and an array of artefacts from different tribes, unveiled the tapestry of Taiwanese Indigenous cultures. They even learned a few phrases in the Indigenous Taiwanese language - 'Nga'ay ho?' (How are you?), 'aray' (Thank you) and 'kamaro' (Please be seated).
This interaction with a unique cultural identity dovetailed neatly with the principles of the new Australian Curriculum. It gave our students a real-world demonstration of the intimate connection between language, culture and identity. Back at school, our students continued the journey by engaging in reconciliation events that broadened their understanding of Australian Indigenous history and culture.
After their visit to the gallery, our Year 10s faced an exciting challenge. They used their Chinese language skills to interview native Chinese speakers from Sunnybank about their views on technology and devices. This exercise let them see how valuable language skills can be when applied to real world situations.
And of course, there was fun to be had! Everyone relished the authentic yum cha lunch at a renowned Brisbane restaurant. The chance to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine was an added cultural bonus.
The excursion concluded with a lively treasure hunt at Sunnybank Plaza. All groups of students were successful in their quest to find shop names and snacks written in Chinese characters. Everyone took home a small prize, a memento of a day filled with discovery, learning and camaraderie.
This language and cultural immersion event beautifully captured the essence of Reconciliation Week, demonstrating how a deep understanding and appreciation of various cultures can bring us closer to our increasingly global community. Through this experience, the students of St Peters didn't just learn about new cultures—they lived them, affirming that education is indeed a journey and not a destination.

LCAQD Art Awards
To coincide with Synod, the Lutheran Laypeople's League sponsored an inaugural Art Prize offering categories from prep to open.
It was essential to convey an interpretation of the theme in the artworks submitted. The winners were announced and presented with their awards at the Saturday evening dinner.
Congratulations to Ting J Year 10 who received a prize of $1000.00 and submitted the following statement with her oil painting on canvas.
Artist Statement:
“Self reflection’’
God has given everyone a purpose as one of his creations. The arts are one of the greatest gifts God has given humanity, whether we create, or embrace it. As an artist myself, I was called according to God’s purpose to express beauty through my artworks and share this gift. This artwork enhances the idea of art being my inner God-given purpose. The concept demonstrates a self-portrait painted through the reflection of a mirror, suggesting the idea of looking deeper into yourself, understanding, and sharing your purpose.

AFLQ SCHOOLS CUP
Well done to our Years 7 - 9 Australian Rules team that travelled to Everton Park FC last Friday to play in the qualifying round for the Junior Girls AFLQ Schools Cup competition. The girls performed exceptionally well defeating Stuartholme and Kedron State High School in dominant performances.
We now progress to the Regional Finals which are scheduled for Thursday 27 July.
Thank you to Peter Hicks, Coaches Chris Cant and Dean Johnson for giving the girls this opportunity, this is the first time St Peters has participated in this competition, let’s go Saints!
Vicki Wilson Preliminary Tournament
Congratulations to our Senior and Junior Teams who have qualified for the Vicki Wilson Netball State Championships which will be played in Term 3.
On Tuesday both teams headed to WDNA to participate in the Met West region preliminary tournament to progress to the State Championships. The tournament consists of six rounds of pool games, each game consists of two, eight minute halves with a 20 minute break in between games. At the end of the pool games the top two teams from each pool cross over and the two winners progress to the State Championships.
Our Junior Team was undefeated in all games with five being the closest margin against St Aidan’s. With limited preparation Coach Tracey was impressed with the team’s connection and the flexibility within the team, the girls went on to defeat St Peter Claver 18 - 7 in the playoff game.
Our Senior Team also went through undefeated, finishing top of their pool but were challenged with some very close games. In the final pool round, we took on St Aidan’s, where the game was goal for goal with St Peters winning by one in the dying seconds. This win saw us crossover and take on Ipswich Girls Grammar School, another tough goal for goal game with the siren sounding at the right time for St Peters to win by a single point!
At the end of the day, we had some tired and sore girls. We were super proud of their efforts, the team culture and comradery was special to be a part of and they certainly represented St Peters with pride.
Thank you to our amazing coaches Tracey and Patti, our program continues to grow under their guidance. Thank you also to Larika for your support and it was great to see old scholars and now coaches Emily, Milly & Renee supporting the girls.
A big thank you to Alex Ever (Charlotta’s Mum) who on behalf of the Netball PSG supplied fruit and snacks for the girls throughout the day. Thanks also to the parents for helping with set up and pack down and scoring.

Our Hockey girls will play next Monday 12 June, 4:00pm at UQ.
While it has been cold over the past couple of days it has been fantastic to have girls on the water consistently. The improvements have been significant because of this consistency and I would like to encourage families to please keep up the on water attendance as we move into camp. Can I please remind families to notify me of any absences, no communication significantly affects the ability of coaches to put full crews on the water, as plans cannot be made.
A few updates as we head into the final weeks of the term and camp.
Round 3 Ergometer Trials – Wednesday 14/Thursday 15 June (afternoon)
Next Wednesday and Thursday afternoon sees the third round of ergometer selections for the program. Coaches will confirm with their year levels which afternoon they will do their trials.
Compulsory Regatta Training – Boat Race Official Presentation
As the program looks ahead to camp and to racing in Term 3, the Brisbane Schoolgirls Rowing Association and the College require students and coaches to go through Boat Race Official and Regatta training for on water safety, communication and signs/signals from boat race officials at Regattas, this training is compulsory.
This training is undertaken by Boat Race Officials that are on the water with the students in a safety and fairness capacity at all regattas.
The St Peters Boat Race Official Presentation and Regatta training is Thursday 22 June (during Rowing Camp).
2023 BSRA Rowing Camp - Bundaberg
Thank you to those families that have already returned the camp forms. I am still waiting on the payment link from finance and will forward this as soon as it is available. As advised previously, camp is critical to kick start the racing season for the girls as well as to make some lifelong friends while they are away. Indemnity forms are required to be returned by Friday 9 June, in preparation for this camp.
Parents are welcome to contact me directly if there are any concerns regarding attendance at this camp.
Mini Camp – Saturday 8 July & Monday 10 July
There will be a daily mini-camp that will operate in the mornings 6:00am - 10:00am on Saturday 9 and Monday 11 July (not Sunday 10 July). This camp is not compulsory, though I highly encourage girls to take part. More details and a sign-on form for this camp will be provided closer to the date.
BSRA Regatta 3 – St Peters Hosting Saturday 5 August
The 2023 BSRA Regatta 3 is on Saturday 5 August and is being hosted by the St Peters Rowing Parent Support Group.
Hosting this event is a large undertaking where the St Peters Rowing program organises and takes all profits from the catering of this event. It is anticipated that approximately 2500+ people attend this regatta. The hosting of this event is a large logistical undertaking and at the Parent Support group meeting earlier this week, planning and coordination discussions were held to ensure we take full advantage of this fund-raising opportunity. Could I please request all families make themselves available to assist on this day.
Today we were excited to announce our Rhythmic Gymnastics Captains for 2023, Charlie R (IND) and Zoe C (SFD). We will be hosting the SPOSA AGM on Sunday 11 June at 11:00am in the new boardroom of the Centre for Learning and Innovation building and would love to welcome some new faces to join our community. Grab a friend who is an Old Scholar and be involved in something that connects our St Peters community through the generations.
