This week the Semester 1 Sports Awards evening was held. Sport is an essential element in our College’s educational vision where we endeavour to provide a breadth and balance of opportunities in academic and Life-Wide Learning. St Peters really is a world of unparalleled opportunities that spans all domains. Indeed, you could go through St Peters half a dozen times and have a completely new set of experiences each time. The breadth of opportunities means to quote one parent - "our students can chase any passion they don’t even know they have yet."
It's not just the breadth of opportunities that make for an outstanding student experience. It’s the fact that balance across the various domains is encouraged, valued and celebrated. That means that you can play the percussion in the St Peters Band, play 1stXI Cricket, be part of the Social Justice Committee and receive a Gold Academic Award.
Competitive team Sport is an essential part of the breadth of opportunities offered at St Peters. Even Sports that are traditionally conceived as individual activities, such as Cross Country or Swimming, are framed as a team experience. There are a number of reasons that competitive team Sports feature so prominently in the life of the College.
Through team Sports, young people learn to be part of something bigger than themselves. They learn to work together and to value the contribution of others. Cooperation is essential in nearly every form of human endeavour and achievement; team Sport provides a context in which our young people can experience cooperation.
In addition, the shared experience of playing together is the substance of many friendships, bonds and memories that last for a lifetime.
Sport is both formative and revelatory of character. That is, the experiences of competing, of winning, of losing, of improving and of persevering, all play a part in shaping character. At the same time, Sport provides a window into the character of individuals and of their communities. The young person who gloats in victory reveals something about themselves. The student who perseveres despite being outmatched, also reveals something about themselves.
Sport provides a forum that shows young people the relationships between effort and improvement. They can see the relationships between practice and skill-development, between training and fitness, between drills and execution. These relationships transfer to other areas of life, including study and academic learning. The challenge is, of course, to help our young people to make the connections. I note that many of our elite sportspeople have exemplary records of engagement in their studies because they have learned these lessons.
A related benefit of inter-school Sport, and the experience of supporting classmates from the stands, is the cultivation of a sense of community and identity. The chanting, cheering, exultation, and excitement all contribute to this sense of belonging. This is a fundamentally healthy aspect of being human; we are connected to one another.
Sport is a servant in the educational endeavour. It is not the master. Sport has such an important place at St Peters, not because it is inherently valuable or meaningful in and of itself, but because through Sport we learn and grow. Sport at our College is not ultimately about producing great victories, rather it is about helping to form fine young St Peters people.
Term 2 Thank you
As the term draws to a close, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of all in our community. A very big thank you to the College’s staff for their unwavering commitment to the learning and well-being of our students. To the parents of our students, thank you for your support of your child and of the College. A big thank you to the various Parent Support Groups whose efforts provide another dimension to the educational programs of the College. Well done to all our young people who have striven to give their best both in and out of the classroom. I wish them and our staff a well-deserved break and look forward to seeing them return refreshed for Semester 2.

Life Symposium 2 - Wednesday August 7 | 6:45pm - 8:15pm
Join us for an inspiring session with Dr Justin Coulson, renowned co-host and parenting expert on Channel Nine’s Parental Guidance. As the founder of happyfamilies.com.au and the author of nine best-selling books on raising resilient children, Justin is recognised as one of Australia’s most trusted authorities on parenting, relationships, and wellbeing.
We’ve all heard the news. A former Sydney schoolgirl. A petition. Literally thousands of stories of sexual assault. Non-consensual sexual encounters that are claimed to be common-place occurrences at parties for teens.
And our kids think it’s normal. They think it’s just how things are.
How are we supposed to talk to our children – our teenagers – about consent, respect, alcohol and other drugs, staying safe, and all of the risks they face? Between us not knowing what to say, or when or how to say it, and our kids not willing to hear it, we’re in a tough spot. But we have to have the conversations. We must. So where do we start?
Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s leading parenting experts and father to six daughters, has put together a presentation designed specifically for parents of high school students. In this session, you’ll hear:
What teenagers are getting up to in terms of alcohol, drugs, pornography, and sex;
Why they think they know everything (and why it’s so hard to teach them anything);
Simple ways to have the conversations your teenager needs to have in a way that invites them to want to listen;
The critical things every parent must do to reduce the risk that their child will be either a perpetrator or a victim of non-consensual sexual activity (assault).
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and tools to have those difficult conversations with your child/ren around sex, consent and staying safe. This is an event not to be missed.
All proceeds from the Symposium will be donated to a children’s charity.
Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to seeing you at Symposium 2.

IB Diploma Information
Did you know, in the past five years, over 200 students have graduated with an IB Diploma at St Peters. The average score awarded to a St Peters IB student during this period was 34, which is equivalent to an ATAR of 90+.
Our final Myth busters are brought to you this week by the IBDP Promotions Group.
Myth Number 7 – You lose friends if you do IB and your friends do ATAR
When doing IB, you keep your existing friends and make new ones!
Myth Number 8 – All IB students are A+ students
IB students come from a range of academic backgrounds, and this diversity is welcomed
IBDP Information and meet the students – Wednesdays lunchtime in D03. All students welcome.

As we approach the end of this semester, I would like to highlight the significance of the upcoming end-of-semester report. You will receive this report on Monday, 24 June and I encourage you and your child to use the information it provides to both review the semester’s achievement and engagement, and to set goals for Semester 2.
Reports will provide details on grades achieved, engagement in learning (Years 7-10), teacher comments and the Grade Point Average (GPA). The teacher comments will identify the strengths and areas for improvement, and the engagement in learning comment provides a comprehensive assessment of the extent to which the students have been involved in their own learning.
It is important to celebrate achievements – academic and engagement – to motivate students to continue working hard, and to remember positive feedback reinforces student efforts, while constructive feedback encourages students to set goals and improve.
Parent Teacher Interviews provide an opportunity for you to discuss the report and your child’s progress. The interviews for Years 8, 10 and 12 will be held on Tuesday, July 16, commencing at 3:30pm, with other Years held at the beginning of Term 4.
If you have any questions about your child’s report, please feel free to contact the individual teacher or me, at the Academic Hub.
I wish all students and families happy and safe holidays.

The Dukes Newsletter
The Duke of Edinburgh Leaders, Jacob, Naomi and King, have compiled The Dukes Newsletter to celebrate the achievements of our over 200 Duke of Edinburgh participants currently at St Peters. Many of our students undertake the Bronze Award as part of their Year 9 Ironbark experience, something all St Peters students are encouraged to complete as most of them are doing the requirements anyway with their involvement in our Sport, Music and Service-Learning programs at the College. All students who attend Ironbark automatically complete the Adventurous Journey for their Bronze Award with the famous Ironbark Hike. Students may then continue to their Silver and finally Gold Award. These internationally recognised Awards are a wonderful holistic achievement for our students and one we encourage everyone to consider.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, referred to as Duke of Ed, is a youth development leadership scheme for young people aged 14 to 25 years. Any person can join the award at any time once they have reached the qualifying age. Participants progress at their own pace.

Year 4 and Rube Goldberg
The Year 4 Unit of Inquiry 'How the World Works,' reached an exciting climax as our Year 4 students and teachers proudly presented their Rube Goldberg machines in the CLI. This engaging project immersed students in the world of simple machines, scientific forces, motion, risk-taking, and the invaluable lessons learned through failure.
Our state-of-the-art Centre for Learning and Innovation proved to be the ideal setting to showcase this impressive event and share our students' learning with the Primary Years community. The CLI's innovative design and modern facilities perfectly complemented the creativity and ingenuity displayed by our Year 4 students.
We extend our warmest congratulations to our Year 4 students for their outstanding achievements and express our gratitude to the teachers and staff who guided them on this learning journey. The showcase event truly encapsulated the spirit of our dynamic learning community, where curiosity thrives, and resilience is cultivated.
Primary Years Track and Field Carnivals
We were blessed with perfect Queensland winter weather for our Prep to Year 3 Track and Field Carnival today on Stolz Oval. It was a wonderful day spent outdoors, enjoying movement and fun with friends while continuing to develop motor skills and gross motor control—a fitting way to conclude Term 2.
Tomorrow, we eagerly anticipate our Years 4-6 Track and Field Carnival.
Special thanks to all the Primary Years staff for their commitment and enthusiasm, making this a memorable day for our students. In particular, I extend our gratitude to Mr Shields, Mrs Muir, and Mr Memedovski for their expert organisation and management of this important event in the College calendar.

Please remember to also check your ‘junk email’ folder.

Rugby, chess AND FOOTBALL SEASONS OVER
I would like to firstly congratulate the Chess team for finishing as overall AIC Champions which is a superb achievement. I can see that Chess is in great hands with our boys and I look forward to many successful seasons ahead. Thank you to Mr Nathaniel Bartlett for coordinating Chess this term.
A special mention to the Primary Rugby boys as they have been on quite a roller coaster journey. I know that many of them were really hoping that we secured enough students to enter a team but unfortunately, we had to withdraw from the AIC competition and focus on training which gives us a good foundation to build on for next year. Thank you to Mr Jack Sims for his energy in leading Rugby at the College.
Finally, a huge congratulations to our four Primary Football teams who all performed admirably this season. There has been a great deal of away trips which sometimes makes those early Saturday mornings particularly tricky, but the boys demonstrated great grit and resilience. Thank you to Mr David Mulligan for leading Football this term.
Congratulations to all students who have represented the College this term. A particular thank you to our parents and caregivers for their support throughout the season.
NETBALL CAMP
We are delighted to offer a two-day Netball camp in the upcoming student free week, for our Years 6 – 12 Netball students. The Netball camp will be held on Tuesday 18 June & Wednesday 19 June at the Harts Road Courts 9:00am to 1:00pm, cost of $50.00.
The camp is a great opportunity for students to develop their skills, get access to specialist coaching from Queensland Firebirds athletes and our program Head coach, Tracey Bruce and Opens coach, Patti Farrell whilst also having fun with your teammates and friends. Please contact Miss Emily Moore & Miss Hannah Le Sage if you have any queries.
Stay Hydrated, Stay Safe! Don't forget your water bottles and hats for HPE lessons. Parents and students, remember to pack these essentials to ensure a fun and safe HPE lesson. Let's keep the energy high and the hydration levels even higher!

Football News
As the Football semester wraps up, there’s an air of celebration and accomplishment among our teams. This season has been a rollercoaster ride of challenges and triumphs, showcasing the grit and spirit of our players across all levels.
1st XI: A Glorious Finale
The 1st XI delivered a thrilling performance in their final game, securing a victory that was as much a testament to their perseverance as to their skill. Despite facing numerous obstacles throughout the semester—be it injuries, tough opponents, or unpredictable weather—the team demonstrated unshakeable resolve and camaraderie. This final win is a fitting capstone to their journey, highlighting the strength and unity that have been their hallmark throughout the season.
2nd XI: Solid Achievements
The 2nd XI also had a commendable season, securing a third-place finish. Striking a balance between seasoned players and rising talents, the team demonstrated strategic prowess and adaptability. Their matches were often tightly contested, but their ability to hold their ground and push forward was evident in every game they played.
3rd XI: Rising Stars
Meanwhile, the 3rd XI has shown remarkable growth and tenacity, finishing second on their table. Their consistent performance week after week has been nothing short of inspiring. Each match was a step closer to their goal, and their hard work and determination paid off. This position reflects not just their talent but also their relentless pursuit of excellence.
To top off this exceptional semester, our annual Football Dinner was a tremendous success. We had a fantastic turnout, with players, coaches and supporters coming together to celebrate the season's achievements.
As we look forward to the next season, we carry with us the lessons learned and the memories made in 2024, ready to face new challenges and continue our pursuit of football excellence.
Rugby News
The Rugby season at St Peters demonstrated the grit and resilience of our boys. Despite challenges with player numbers, all teams and coaches showed remarkable determination pushing through every match with unrelenting commitment. Their efforts culminated in a memorable Saturday night Rugby dinner, where the season's award winners were honoured for their exceptional contributions. It was a night of celebration and reflection, highlighting the perseverance and teamwork that defined our year.
A special thank you goes to our Year 7s, who embarked on their first year of Rugby with enthusiasm and dedication. Their passion and energy have laid a strong foundation for the future. We also bid a heartfelt farewell to our Year 12s, who were presented with their First XV jerseys, marking the end of their journey with St Peters Rugby. Their leadership and hard work have left a lasting impression on the team, and they will be greatly missed.
Chess News
On Friday night, our AIC Chess team emerged victorious, claiming both the First IV Premiership and the AIC Aggregate! To be crowned AIC Aggregate champions for consecutive years is a credit to the strength and depth of our chess ranks. With 62 boys trialling each week for one of the 28 spots, competition has been fierce and has been a collective effort across the year levels.
It was a pleasure to watch the boys go undefeated across the last three rounds in all age groups to secure the aggregate! Our First IV was comprised of students from Years 7 – 12, and it was fantastic to see the determination of our young players who rose to the occasion. Congratulations to Austin L, Oscar L, Harrison L, Luke D, and Will S. We look forward to watching these boys’ development for many years to come!
