Welcome to Semester 2
Welcome to Term 3. A particularly warm welcome to those new students and their families joining St Peters this term. I hope that you settle in and feel part of our community very soon.
Semester 1 reports were made available over the break. They provide a snapshot of where your child is at in their learning journey. If you haven’t already done so, it is important that parents have conversations with their child/ren as to their progress. Comments and feedback around effort, attitude, classwork, and homework are as important (if not more so) than grades. The start of the second semester provides students with the opportunity to take stock and establish their learning goals for the second half of the year. Establishing good study and homework routines are crucial to the achievement of those learning goals. Consistent, focused effort in class is another key element if our young people are to achieve their goals.
Something that sets St Peters apart from other schools is the quality and nature of the Student Experience – both in and out of the classroom. Whether it be Music, the Arts, Sport, Robotics, Debating, Service Learning or Ironbark you would be hard-pressed to find such a diverse array of opportunities. The Year 12s in their lunches with me during Terms 2 and 3 consistently remark that this world of opportunities that St Peters provides is something that they love about their College. When I question a little deeper it is much more than just the range of experiences that they value – it is the nature of them. Our students value the friendships that are formed as they participate together; the opportunity to try new things and learn new skills; to test themselves to see what they are capable of; to create memories together; to discover and pursue their passions and simply have fun.
As we embark on Term 3 I encourage the fine young people of St Peters to set their aspirations high, and engage in purposeful endeavour with studies and make the very most of the experiences afforded to them across the array of College life.
My very best wishes to each of you for the term ahead.

Sparking Joy
What did you get up to during your holidays? It’s the question that’s been asked everywhere as we all get back together at the start of the semester. I’d love to say that I went somewhere fantastically interesting these holidays, but unfortunately my response has been, Having a quiet few weeks around home”. Which, if you don’t know the shorthand means, “It was too cold and wet to get out in the garden so I ended up sorting all those things that accumulate around the house.” I can’t say I exactly KonMarie’d the place, but there were many things that I uncovered that definitely sparked joy for me, some of them quite unexpected.
High on the 'sparking joy' list was an old chocolate tin from my childhood, which contained all of my 'precious things' - things that have no real monetary value, but that were important to me and prompt happy memories. And as I sorted through the various mementos of my earlier life, I began to realise that the things that we hold onto as important, the things that bring us joy, show clearly who we are and what we value.
Our school also has values, things that our community holds as important. These values are taught here every day, but not always talked about. They are taught through our actions, through what we say and how we respond.
As members of St Peters we are not individuals in isolation – we live in a community. Living in community has attendant responsibilities, and these are informed by the values that we hold. Our school sees everything that the staff and students do and are, in relation to God, and sees each person as being in a relationship with God. Therefore the school values and cares for all people, encouraging us to reflect the characteristics of God as we live in community.
When we have compassion, love and appreciation for each other, bullying is no longer a problem. When we have courage and stand up for justice and show forgiveness, we are able to get along and heal disagreements. When we are humble and seek to serve others we begin to make this world a better place. When we hold on to hope and seek to do all things well we can truly make a difference. These are the things that spark joy in our community, that joy that only God can give to us.

It is going to be an exciting term. The countdown is on to our Junior High Literature Day on Monday 25 July! The planning is well underway. This year we have authors Phillip Gwynn and Richard Yaxley presenting sessions which will cover all our Junior High students.
In addition, our Book Week celebrations have commenced. Come in and see our display based on this year’s slogan 'Dreaming with eyes open'. They include authors - Pip Harry, Karen Foxlee, Roseanne Hawke, Jackie French, Wendy Orr, Steven Herrick, and Morris Gleitzman. Which title will win? We have to wait for the August announcement….
This year, for all Years 7 – 12 students, these competitions will be held on Wednesday afternoons; 3:20-4:45pm. Whilst this time may not suit everyone, it has been chosen as it has an appropriate venue available and clashes as little as possible with many other co-curricular activities.

Primary Years News
I am delighted to welcome you to Semester 2. I look forward to a productive and happy semester with the students and staff, and in our continued partnership with you the parents and caregivers in the Primary Years.
Semester 2 always brings about some changes of timetable for Upper Primary students. Years 5C and 5D will be introduced to MEBS which is always a highlight, and other changes for specialist days have taken place. Please ask your child if they have been affected.
Full Winter uniform continues to be required in Term 3 and the formal uniform for Upper Primary including formal hats, blazers (with ties and long trousers for boys) are required each Tuesday and Thursday, while Lower Primary require their formal uniform on Wednesdays.
I am sure you will join me in warmly welcoming the following staff to St Peters Primary Years:
Ms Rebecca Hannan – 6B Year Level teacher Mr Brock Smith – 6D Year Level teacher
I know that you welcome Rebecca and Brock to Upper Primary, and to the Primary Years community.
In the weeks to come, I hope to use the Rock to share with the St Peters community important aspects of the Teaching and Learning program in the Primary Years. This week is an overview on the purpose of assessment in a Primary classroom.
The purpose of assessment in the Primary Years is to inform teaching and learning.
The process of assessment involves not just teachers and students but a collaborative relationship involving families as well. Often, we think of assessment as a point in time final result, or a grade that often singularly defines achievement. In fact, assessment is far more diverse and personal.
For teachers, assessment is an ongoing process, including feedback to parents, feeding forward to students and informing next steps in teaching. A way for students to communicate what they know and understand based on what they make, write, draw, say and do.
To maximise the potential of our students in the teaching and learning program, active engagement in the assessment process by parents is vital. For parents, assessment:
Provides valuable insights about their child as a learner
Creates a partnership in the child’s learning journey
Gives ongoing access to their child’s demonstration of learning through portfolios
Allows participation in the assessment process e.g., through parent-teacher interviews, three-way conferences, portfolios
Gives parents the opportunity to continue their development as pedagogical partners in the teaching and learning program/process.
Most importantly, assessment for students:
Provides opportunities to make connections across subject areas
Provides every opportunity for success
Develops student agency in the process
Allows them to make connections between concepts (big ideas) rather than just content
Allows for reflection on their process to inform next learning steps.
If you would like to read more about Assessment in the Primary Years, our belief statement can be found here.
God’s blessings for Term 3.

Junior High
Junior High News
Welcome to Term 3, which promises to be a busy and action-packed second half of the year. Congratulations to all Junior High students for the way in which they have started the term. It was lovely to hear about their holiday adventures. There is a renewed sense of energy and excitement around the school and students appear well rested and ready for the long term ahead.
YEAR 9 2023 SUBJECT SELECTION & IRONBARK INFORMATION EVENING
Next Thursday is the Year 9 2023 Subject Selection & Ironbark Information Evening. This is an important event for all Year 9 families to attend so they fully understand the subject selection process and how Ironbark groups are allocated. We look forward to seeing you there.
The Year 8s successfully left for camp on Tuesday morning. We look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return.
YEAR 9EF IRONBARK
On Tuesday morning we also farewelled 9EF as they left on their Ironbark adventure. A reminder that staff members from Indooroopilly do visit Ironbark periodically during the five weeks so if you have any items that needs to be delivered for students currently at Ironbark, please drop them into Junior High Reception.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
As you are aware, next Tuesday we will hold our Parent-Teacher Interview Evening in the Dohler classrooms for Years 7, 8 and 12. These interviews are a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s teachers and discuss progress, areas requiring attention and strategies for ongoing improvement. These evenings are an important and effective way of parents meeting numerous teachers in a short time. We acknowledge that not all families will be able to be catered for in the one evening and remind parents that they are also able to contact teachers at any time throughout the year via email or telephone should they have any questions or concerns.
MOBILE PHONE USE
Some students can find it difficult to adjust to mobile phone restrictions when they return from holidays. Students are reminded that we require them to keep their mobiles secured in their locker during the day. They can access them at their locker during break times for important messages only. If a student has their mobile phone confiscated it will be held by the Year Level Coordinator or at Junior High Reception for collection.
PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
A number of Junior High classes will have pre-service teachers attached to them this term. Gaining work experience ‘in the field’ is a mandatory part of teacher training and involves a number of stages or blocks of time. Pre-Service teachers work through stages from spending time purely observing classes up to ‘internships’ where they are given provisional teacher registration and are able to teach, assess and report on units of work. Throughout all of these stages pre-service teachers are supervised, monitored and work closely with experienced teachers. Should you have any queries or concerns please contact the supervising teacher involved.
AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS – RULE REMINDER
There seems to be an increasingly large number of students who are ‘hanging around’ the College at the end of the school day, not being picked up until 5pm or waiting for training or an event to start after 5pm. In most cases it seems that parents have instructed their child to go to the library to make a start on their homework until they are picked up. Unfortunately, it seems that some students are instead using this as a time to meet up and socialise. I would take this opportunity to ask you to speak to your child about the expectations outlined below and would encourage you to contact the library on 3377 6273 from time to time to ensure they are where they are supposed to be.
When school has finished, day students are to leave the school by 3.30pm unless involved in an official, adult-supervised activity.
After 3.30pm, day students who are still at school must go to one of the following:
the Langer Library;
an organised cocurricular activity
Students should not wait in the vicinity of the Boarding Houses, classroom passageways, locker areas, ovals or other isolated areas after 3.30pm. The College cannot accept responsibility for the care of day students during these ‘out of hours’ periods, if they are not attending one of the above activities.
Key reminders:
Students must always leave school in full school or training uniform.
No students should be getting changed into free dress at the end of the day to leave school.
No student should be at the shops or in the community wearing a mix of uniform and casual clothes. They should be completely in or completely out of uniform.

Welcome back to Term 3
We hope that the recent break has allowed students and their families to refresh and recharge after a busy first semester. There is much to look forward to this term and I know the students are excited to involve themselves in many of the opportunities on offer. As COVID and the flu continue to be prevalent in the wider community, student’s will be encouraged to be mindful of personal hygiene and are reminded to stay at home if they are unwell.
This week we welcomed a number of new students and their families to our school community. We have others who will join us in the coming days/weeks. Thank you to parents for their support, guidance and encouragement of these students in their first few weeks at St Peters. Making a transition to a new school can be a challenging proposition for some – should you have any concerns or feedback regarding any new students please don’t hesitate to contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator.
SPYGT (St Peters You’ve Got Talent) auditions commence next week with the final being held on the evening of Friday July 29. This annual event is very popular amongst our students, and based on the nominations received this year, there is once again going to be some amazing talent on show. The school leaders have worked tirelessly to bring this together and we look forward to being thoroughly entertained by students and staff!
Next Tuesday, Year 12 students will celebrate 75 days of school remaining. The countdown is on, however, the Seniors have been encouraged not to count the days, but to make each of those 75 days count. There is much to accomplish and achieve in the latter half of the year, and I urge students to continue to invest and engage in their studies, giving themselves every opportunity to achieve their goals for life beyond St Peters.
From the Deputy Head of Senior School, Mr Joel Butler
The Year 11 Student Leadership process will begin in the coming weeks with planning underway to select and elect our 2022/2023 Prefect Team. This has been communicated to students in recent weeks during their Year Level meeting. 'Leadership Breakfasts' will take place before school starting at 7am. These gatherings are an opportunity for any students interested in applying to be a Prefect to come and hear from leadership mentors about both leadership as a concept and what the process of electing student leaders will look like this term.
A reminder that Year Level Coordinators and Mr Rushmore have spoken with students this week regarding the uniform and grooming expectations of the College. Year Level Coordinators will oversee the checking of this in the coming days and students who are not meeting the required standards will be asked to meet with myself on Thursday afternoon. Can I please ask for parent support in this process. By all working together, we can uphold the strong reputation St Peters has while focusing on other important issues.

Chorale Tour
St Peters Chorale Regional Tour (Saturday 18 June – Wednesday 23 June)
During the end of semester holidays, St Peters Chorale and Chamber Chorale spent five days on tour in the Darling Downs area. Their public performances in St Luke’s Lutheran Church, Crows Nest and St Luke’s Anglican Church, Toowoomba were given standing ovations by the enthusiastic and supportive audiences. Chorale joined the congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for their Sunday morning service and helped to lead music worship. At all of these public events, the students really enjoyed meeting St Peters alumni and hearing their stories of St Peters and Ironbark in the past.
Chorale also visited Highfields State Secondary College and Centenary Heights SHS, Toowoomba taking part in combined workshops with their choirs and giving lunchtime concerts. Staff and students also enjoyed the opportunity to explore some of the tourist opportunities in the Downs area including visits to The Kingaroy Observatory, the Warwick Museum and Sutton’s Apple Farm in Stanthorpe. Campfires, bush dancing, games night and a handbell ringing workshop added to the fun during their time at Koonjarewon Campsite in Highfields. Congratulations to the students of Chorale for their fabulous performances and for being excellent ambassadors for the College whilst on Tour.

Boarding
Adopt-a-Boarder Program to the rescue
At the end of Term 2, Year 11 students had their semi formal, an important milestone for all students. For our Boarding students, particularly those whose family are far away, the stress of getting an outfit organised can be enough to put them off going. This year, two of our international students, Yarrah and Ashley, felt a bit overwhelmed by the outfit, makeup and hair requirements and they questioned whether they would attend. Then their Adopt-a-Boarder staff members got involved, Jodi Dew and Jane McGrath.
Knowing the girls needed some care and guidance, Jodi organised her daughter, (and ex-St Peters student) Sophie, to help. Sophie kindly met the girls at Indooroopilly to help them shop and then on the night came into the girls boarding house to do their hair and makeup from the images Yarrah and Ashley had found online. Jane and Jodi spent the afternoon chatting with the girls, laughing and taking photos whilst eating nibbles and sharing stories in girls boarding. To Yarrah and Ashley, this meant the world and the relationship shown between all is a wonderful testament to the important lifelong relationships that are formed via the Adopt-a-Boarder program.
On returning home to China, Yarrah wrote her thanks to Jane, Jodi and Sophie; “Thank you so much for coming and staying with us the whole afternoon on Friday, it was really lovely and sweet. The Adopt-a-Program is all about the connections between teachers and students like us. I appreciate all the love you showed to Ashley and I, our great night really started with your care. Sophie did the best job and it gave me the confidence to go. Thank you for helping me. 😊”
Jane, Jodi and Sophie, thank you for your time and efforts, you really did make a difference.
