This week was our annual Mother/Son Breakfast. The guest speaker was Old Scholar Cameron Callope (Class of 1992). Cameron is a proud Indigenous man from the Gulf country in Far North Queensland. Cameron was a boarder at St Peters for his final two years of schooling. He absolutely loved his time at the College. To use Cameron’s words his St Peters experience ‘allowed him to imagine and create the person he wanted to be’ – to be the best possible version of himself. Cameron’s story is a powerful one. He is currently studying a Doctor of Public Medicine at Harvard University, and prior to that worked in the music industry working with the likes of Snoop Dog.
Cameron is obviously very successful yet his trajectory to this point in his life where he is doing these amazing things has not been a linear one. For six years after leaving St Peters he was homeless, literally sleeping on a park bench in King George Square in the city each night. Through his story Cameron made the point that a person’s life journey is not a straight line. There are going to be peaks and troughs, challenges, setbacks, obstacles, triumphs and victories along the way. Cameron made the point that through this journey having goals, being curious, being courageous, accepting responsibility and knowing who you are is vital in journeying through life. It was a powerful message for our young people who were present at the breakfast. St Peters is proud of the part that it played in helping shape the person that Cameron has become, just as we are of each of our current young people and who they are becoming. Life might not be a straight line, but through the experiences that a St Peters education offers our young people have the opportunity to develop the skills, values, attitudes, knowledge, and mindset to help them navigate the twists and turns that they will encounter in their lives beyond St Peters.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Online Gaming
Games are an integral part of human behaviour. It is normal and healthy for young people to engage in play as a part of their daily lives, including playing games online. Like most activities, online gaming can have both positive and negative outcomes. It can be intimidating and confusing for carers trying to understand a young person’s online experiences with many considering that staring at a screen is an unhealthy habit. However, the World Health Organisation does believe that as well as the risks, there are also many positive benefits associated with online gaming and these could be key in nurturing bonds with others.
During the pandemic, there was an explosive growth of gaming as people sought much needed connection during isolation. In the media, gaming often gets bad publicity because most coverage tends to concentrate on the minority of gamers who play to such an extent that it compromises all other areas of their life. However, online gaming can teach young people many skills including teamwork, concentration, communication and problem solving. It requires a level of interaction and skill from the player; unlike watching television, which is more passive.
Online communities provide opportunities for young people to feel socially connected and have a sense of belonging. At healthy levels, gaming can increase their self-esteem and social acceptance. However, any behaviour, when taken to an extreme, can also have a negative impact on a young person’s everyday life. Understanding what your young person experiences online and knowing the warning signs if they are at risk, will help nurture a more positive relationship with online gaming and help your family find the right balance.
If you are concerned about your young person’s online gaming habits, it’s important to consider a number of factors. This edition will provide strategies on how to deal with any issues you may be experiencing.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Do you have a bucket of LEGO gathering dust in the garage? Have your children outgrown all the LEGO they used to love when they were younger? The Primary Years will happily take any donations of LEGO that you are willing to donate to the College. Just drop it into either Lower or Upper Primary Administration and it will be put to good use.
Parents as Pedagogical Partners
As we continue to engage parents as partners in our learning and teaching program, I am most grateful to the parents and caregivers who gave their time so generously in Year 3 and Year 6 last week.
I was delighted to witness the engagement of our Year 3 students as they explore the current Central Idea, 'Diversity enriches our Community'. This front loading activity has allowed them to appreciate the richness of various cultures and family traditions. I commend our Year 3 parents for actively sharing their cultural heritage and family customs with the students.
Similarly, our Year 6 students have embarked on an exciting journey as they prepare for their Term 4 PYP Exhibition. The Central Idea, 'Discovering our passions can lead to action' is empowering them to explore their interests and consider the impact they can have on the world. I'm delighted to see their active involvement with different members of our community through the Human Library initiative. These real world connections offer valuable insights and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
As we move forward, I encourage all parents and caregivers to continue participating actively in our school community. Your involvement plays a crucial role in supporting our students' holistic development and enriching their educational experience.
How do these activities connect with students in the Primary Years and contribute to a rigorous Primary Years learning and teaching program?
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) approaches to learning and teaching are research based and draw from the best educational practices from around the world.
PYP students develop a sense of the world around them and their responsibility to it. (See 'What is an IBEducation?')
PYP teachers are required to participate in many professional development opportunities to continually improve their awareness of current educational practices and new thinking by connecting with the global International Baccalaureate community.
International Baccalaureate programmes (including the PYP) are recognised internationally and ease the educational transitions of mobile students so that their education is not adversely affected if their families relocate.
Parents and caregivers are important members of the PYP learning community. All members of the learning community from the youngest learners to school leaders to parents, educators and beyond, have a responsibility to be guided by the conceptual ideas supporting the PYP and the Learner Profile attributes (more to come in future weeks). To learn more:
We are thrilled to announce that we will be dedicating Week 5 to the celebration of Multicultural Week in the Primary Years. This week symbolises our commitment to acknowledging and celebrating the various cultures that comprise our vibrant school community. We see this as a golden opportunity for our students to delve into the rich diversity of world cultures, thereby nurturing an environment of mutual respect, acceptance and comprehension.
We continue to celebrate the diversity in and around the Primary Years both inside and outside the classroom.
To further gather support and information regarding the diversity in our community, we would greatly appreciate it if you could lend your expertise and provide your valuable input to help us shape our program. We are particularly interested in suggestions for cultural activities, any help you could provide and any resources or information about your own culture that you would be willing to share with our community.
To facilitate this process, we have prepared a short survey where you can contribute your suggestions and ideas. We kindly request that you complete the survey by Wednesday July 26.
Please be assured that the information you provide will be used strictly for educational purposes in the hope of offering students a deeper appreciation of different cultures.
We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to your valuable input to make this event memorable and enlightening for our students.
Thank you for being a vital part of our school community. We eagerly anticipate your responses and can't wait to celebrate our diverse cultures together.
This week our Year 11 and 12 IB students got together to discuss the Extended Essay (EE) task. The EE in the IB Diploma is a 4000 word piece of independent research that students undertake in an area from one of their DP subjects or as an interdisciplinary world studies essay that focuses on a global issue. The EE is conducted over 12 months with the supervision of a member of staff to help guide and introduce the student to university level research.
At the start of Term 3 our Year 12s handed in their final EE, a huge milestone in their DP journey. In this mentoring session with the Year 11s, the Year 12 students could talk about their research question and provide advice to Year 11 students from their experience. In turn, the Year 11 students could ask the Year 12s their opinion or recommendations on the topic areas they were contemplating to undertake. During this session, there was a buzz of conversation in the CLI flexible classrooms and both groups got a lot out of the experience. We look forward to supporting our current Year 11s on their EE journey over the next 12 months. It is always exciting to see what the individual students choose to research and is a rich learning experience for the students and staff alike. The EE is an excellent preparatory task for future university studies and one that IB students remember as part of their DP journey.

UQ World Religions Symposium Excursion
On Wednesday this week, the Year 11 Study of Religion students, along with a keen group of Year 10s, attended the World Religions Symposium hosted by the Studies in Religion department at the University of Queensland. Along with students from other schools, our students heard fascinating lectures on the 'Science and Religion Conflict', 'Islam and Society' and the 'Ethics and Reception of Job'. Break times offered an opportunity to relax among the sandstone buildings and gum trees of UQ’s Great Court and debrief from the lectures.
In the 'Science and Religion Conflict' lecture, Associate Professor Tom Aechtner debunked the common misperception that science and religion have always been in conflict with one another. He demonstrated instead how many key figures in the early modern scientific revolution were motivated by their faith and operated on religious presuppositions and how religious identity and scientific scholarship have not been mutually exclusive ever since.
The 'Islam and Society' lecture, delivered by SiR PhD candidate Ms Zerrin Afza, offered students insights into the history and experiences of Muslims in Australia, from pre-colonial interactions between South East Asian traders and Indigenous Australians to recent attacks against the Muslim community in Brisbane. It was wonderful to learn from Ms Afza’s scholarly expertise and personal religious experience, which gave the students a different and more balanced picture of what we often see in mainstream media and political discourse.
The 'Ethics and Reception of Job', presented by Dr James Lancaster, gave the students a deep dive into this fascinating and challenging text from the Hebrew Scriptures. Questions of suffering and pain and the relationship between God and humanity were explored through the lens of the text, including the opportunity to think through how texts are constructed and how that shapes the ways we read them.
The day ended with a Q&A session with the presenters, where the students and teachers could ask any questions, from specific questions about the day’s lectures to the employability of people who study Religion at UQ. It was encouraging to hear about the beneficial and employable skills and knowledge gained through Studies in Religion in particular and the Bachelor of Arts more generally. Our students engaged well with the UQ faculty in this Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions. We were also the only group to grab a photo with the lecturers at the end of the day.

Echoes of Elegance Concert
Last week, the St Peters Soloists delivered a series of captivating performances for their Echoes of Elegance concert. The Soloists were accompanied by talented Old Scholars Yuro Lee (violin), Angelina Kim (viola), and Zoe Catchpoole (soprano) who showcased their potential as future professional concert musicians with performances full of character and poise.
One of the evening's highlights was the St Peters Soloists' rendition of Finnish composer Einar Englund's 'Symphony No. 4', a composition requiring great maturity and commitment. Beyond merely playing the notes, the Soloists created some beautiful and emotional musical landscapes that were strongly contrasted by their youthful energy.
Congratulations to the St Peters Soloists and to Yuro, Angelina and Zoe for an unforgettable evening of music.

He also spoke about our motto, ’Plus Ultra’ and striving to go ever higher and give their all to inspire others in their respective sports.

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Congratulations to all girls on the way they represented St Peters last Saturday in the first round of QGSSSA Winter Fixtures. It’s always great to get the first games played so our teams and coaches can move forward with their training plans for the season. It was a successful round for all sports against opponents St Margaret’s which was pleasing to see.
Round 2 this Saturday we take on Moreton Bay College which is always a great contest across the sports. Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draw. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct St Peters uniform to prepare for your games. Please ensure you wear St Peters Senior Jerseys or tracksuit tops, no hoodies please. No crocs and slides also. Good luck to all teams.
Date Claimers:
Round 2: Saturday 22 July v Moreton Bay College (Away) Round 3: Saturday 29 July v Clayfield College (Home) Round 4: Saturday 5 August v Somerville House (Away) Round 5: Saturday 12 August v Brisbane Girls Grammar School (Home) Round 6: Saturday 19 August v St Aidan’s (Away) Round 7: Saturday 26 August v Brisbane State High School (Home) Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girls Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s (Home)
With balloon arrangements in full display and seemingly bottomless morning tea, the Netball Support Group certainly did their best to help launch the 2023 QGSSSA Netball season. In what was a double celebration it was great to welcome back some St Peters Netball Old Scholars, they enjoyed the SPOSA sponsored morning tea and were impressed with the on court action and the atmosphere of game day.
In the first round of fixtures, the 8A team were able to capitalise on the pre-season preparation and post a big win. The Year 7 teams were not so fortunate and although they put in a good effort it was not enough to overcome the determined St Margaret’s teams.
St Peters warmed up for the Second Round led by a courageous Open team who fought back from a seven goal deficit at one stage to narrowly scrape home with a one goal win. It was an exciting and hard-fought game, and the girls should take some confidence from their performance. The 9A team posted the biggest winning margin of the day and the 9B team capitalised on their defensive strength and kept the opposition to only two goals. Although the result was a little closer, the 10A team posted a win ensuring St Peters achieved a clean sweep of the round.
Round 3 continued in good form with the Senior A team dominating their opponent and posting a big win. The Senior B team also secured a win; however, the Senior C1 team went down fighting. The 10B1 team played a tough match which ended in a well deserved draw.
In a solo effort in Round 4 the 10B2 team posted a good win to finish off a successful day.
There is certainly room for improvement, however, a solid performance overall was enough for St Peters to secure the opening round and provide confidence for the season ahead.

Round 2 Draw v Moreton Bay College: Saturday 22 July – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
Last week our Junior and Open teams commenced the season with victories against St Margaret’s. Opens were down early but fought back to post a 4-1 victory. It was a good test for us leading into much tougher opposition in Moreton Bay College. Juniors had a resounding victory with some experience absent from the team. An 11-2 victory was not expected but our next batch of Year 7 girls have injected some high levels of skill and energy. Big kudos to Aadya for being goalie in the absence of any volunteers.

Council Notice to Members of the Community
A notice to the community that over the coming term Council Inspectors will be conducting patrols around the College to promote safe parking and ensure that motorists are complying with local traffic conditions. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
While it is certainly not Council’s intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving during pick up and drop off times.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask that parents, guardians and visitors to visit Council’s website at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and search parking rules to learn more about parking in Brisbane.
