An Education that is More than the Sum of its Parts
One of the hallmarks of a St Peters Education is the almost unrivalled array of life wide learning opportunities that exist for our students to be engaged in. In many respects Term 3 really illustrates this – from Musical events like ‘Swing into Spring’ and Performer of the Year Concerts, Student Art and Film Exhibitions, Debating, Robotics competitions, Service Learning activities, our Multicultural Parade of Nations, nine different sports and SPYGT. There are many more that I have not mentioned. Then there are the learning experiences within the classroom.
This week I was privileged to visit the Year 10 Psychology Classes using the Maker Spaces in our Centre for Learning and Innovation to develop an Augmented Reality of the human brain. Learning is certainly heading in an exciting direction. There are so many rich, deep and varied experiences at St Peters that help our students learn more than just subject matter. Through an education that really is more than the sum of its parts our young people learn who they are, their values, their strengths and areas for growth and what their purpose is in the world around them. I am grateful to our staff who do so much to provide these opportunities for our students.
I wish our young people and their families a well-deserved break over the next two weeks, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back for the final term of the school year.

Special Report: R U OK? Day
Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.
R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention year round by urging people to invest time in personal relationships and empowering informal support networks to identify signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”
Engaging in R U OK? Day activities go beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK? Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.
This Special Report provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help.
A week to remember – reflections on our Canberra trip
It has been a big week! It's my catchphrase right now. 47 students, 5 staff, 1 bus. It was a cacophony, it was chaotic, it was cramped and crowded, it was Springfield’s year 6 Canberra tour. All Canberra tours can be described in these terms I am told. Everyone who asks how I am or how it was hears the same phrase, "It has been a big week!"
It was life-changing and thought-provoking. An interesting mix of experiences; juxtaposed together were places that memorialised the past, with those that cast our eyes to a hopeful future. While the War Memorial remembers the sacrifice of the veterans of yesterday, the Australian Institute of Sport prepares the athletes of tomorrow. Our visit to the National Library immediately followed from New Parliament House. Or the one which struck a particular (dis)chord with me, a detour on the way home from Government House past the SIEVX memorial. Our capital remembers our capital shapes.
My most meaningful moment was the SIEVX memorial. Hundreds of hand painted poles created by schools, community groups and churches around Australia. Each represents refugees, frightened and fleeing, mostly women and children who died on a voyage here in the early years of the ‘Stop the Boats’ campaign. Witnessing under the shadows of the flag of Parliament House and iconic Telstra tower, the memorial exists to remember the lost. It is a sacred place. There is no point in putting up a memorial to the Good Samaritan if you walk straight past.
As we left, I was asked to give a reflection. It can be hard to find the words in tragedy, but I was drawn to a key attribute of God – love for the powerless. Deuteronomy 10:18 shares a promise that God has for people like those whom the memorial honours:
God defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.
Much later in biblical history, in Hebrews, we hear this promise personalised and expanded to include people just like us. Select verses from Hebrews 13:
God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
We hear that God is present with us and always will be. And when I stood in the memorial, I knew that God’s heart broke for these people lost at sea. The promise to never leave us nor forsake us is a promise that transcends death. Their lives were lost, but they remained in the fold of God. And while Canberra remembers and Canberra looks forward, and governments change, God is always the same, promising to be with us and to defend the cause of the powerless.

On the weekend I read an article that gave me great joy; The Boardgame Renaissance is Underway as screen time shunned in favour of offline social connections. I feel sorry for kids these days, they’re so wrapped up in their devices and gaming that the family could relocate house and they’d still be sitting there…unaware. I don’t blame them, if I was a kid in this era, I’d find it hard not to be totally consumed as well.
The article stated that since Covid, boardgame sales have been on the rise as people have rediscovered the fun and connection that comes from board games and card games. When I was younger growing up out west, if we lost power during a storm, we’d light up some candles in old pasta jars and pull out the boardgames or cards and keep ourselves amused for hours. As a parent now, I couldn’t wait until our young Emily was old enough to start playing Uno. What an educator! Turn taking, strategy, learning to win and lose with grace. It certainly wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns initially, with tantrums, stomping and the slamming of a door a usual occurrence each night. But with some persistence, we got there, and Emily learnt the lesson that you don’t have to win for the game to be fun. The same can be said for bike riding. It was amazing during Covid, to see how many children and families committed to learning to ride. I’d drive the streets on the way to and from work and it was like a scene from 80s with streets filled with kids entertaining themselves with all sorts of wheeled devices. Is there anything more liberating as a child than being able to ride a bike!
September school holidays is my favourite of all the holiday periods as we head over to K’Gari for a week of camping and inadvertent resilience building. No technology, no phone reception, no electricity, no taps or toilets, it truly is an adventure that our family wouldn’t have any other way. To watch the kids keep themselves entertained for hours with sticks, shells, rock pools, finding pippies and fishing, is a joy to watch. You can see their growth as little humans right before your eyes and when we leave for home, they want to stay. The value of play and the value of simplicity for all to see, all without an iPad in sight.
All the best for a safe holiday period and we look forward to seeing you refreshed for the start of Term 4 on Wednesday 4 October.

Year 1 Moreton Bay Excursion
Our Year 1 students along with their teachers and parent volunteers recently took a trip to the Manly foreshore to participate in the Habitat Heroes program run by the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre.
They explored the intertidal zone, where they uncovered the incredible wildlife that thrives in this unique habitat and also dove into the world of freshwater macroinvertebrates, those water bugs that are so crucial in indicating water quality. Students gathered data and made assessments that will contribute to their understanding of the health of nearby water systems.
On board the vessel 'Inspiration,' students explored habitats both above and below the surface of Moreton Bay, taking sediment samples from the sea floor and examining them under microscopes. Our underwater video adventures were equally fascinating, revealing the bay's creatures and human influences on this fragile ecosystem.
We discussed how humans can impact these habitats and brainstormed ways to protect them. As newly anointed 'Habitat Heroes', we're excited to do our part in preserving this beautiful environment.

Last weekend saw the final round of AIC Basketball and Tennis fixtures for 2023. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in making our 2023 Basketball and Tennis season such a successful one. Many thanks to both Orhan Memedovski (Basketball Coordinator) and Lija Marshall (Tennis Coordinator) for all their hard work each week in ensuring that both sports ran smoothly and effectively.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to all our coaches for their support, knowledge and mentoring of our boys. It would be remiss not to thank both the students who participated as well as their families who supported them each week throughout the AIC season.
Without the enthusiasm and support of all the above mentioned, such a successful sporting season of AIC sport would not have been achieved.
We would like to congratulate the following St Peters Tennis teams who completed the AIC Tennis season as undefeated winners.
1sts, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 10A, 10B, 9A, 8A, 8B & 7B
We must also congratulate our Basketball teams who despite most teams having tough seasons developed as the season went on and remained dedicated to training and games. We acknowledge the 1st V Basketball team who narrowly went down to Villa on the weekend by 4 points to just miss out on the 1st Basketball Premiership.
AIC Track & Field Update
The fourth and last of our AIC Track & Field Lead Up meets was scheduled for this Wednesday 13 September at The State Athletics Facility (SAF), Nathan. It was one of the last opportunities for our boys to practise and hone their skills before the 2023 AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in the first week of Term 4. We are extremely proud of the work and enthusiasm our boys have exhibited so far and we are looking forward to seeing what they can achieve at the AIC Championships.
The AIC Track & Field Championships will be held on Thursday 5 October and Friday 6 October at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC). We wish all our athletes the best of success as they finalise their preparations leading into these championships.

All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.

“Make your life about joy. Celebrate your big and little wins. Grow every day. Enjoy the first sip of your morning coffee, and the second and third and fourth. Find something to smile about on your commute. Give hugs often, compliment others whenever you can. Get inspired. Nourish yourself. Go outside and spend time in nature. Take chances. Make the art. Watch the sunrise. Climb the mountain. Because life is just too short and fragile to not live a life of chasing joy.” - Nikki Banas

Our girls have done an amazing job this term, I have enjoyed watching them every week and the improvement across our Girls Sports has been impressive. The girls have wonderful support from our coordinators and coaches, and we thank each and every one of them for all they do for St Peters Sport.
Good luck to our Track & Field girls, they have worked so hard preparing for the QGSSSA Championships today.

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Round 9 was another great round of Sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed taking on St Hilda’s on our home venues, it was a wonderful way to finish the season.
Our Volleyball girls had an awesome season with the Opens, Senior A, Senior B, 10A and 9A teams all securing premierships. ‘Focus Round’ which doubled up as ‘Orange Round’ organised by the Open team was a huge success with an amazing amount of funds raised going to the Leukaemia Foundation. Well done to all involved.
Netball finished the season with 3 premierships, well done to the Senior A, Senior B and 10B1 teams.
Girls Tennis enjoyed a season of mixed results with special mention to the Junior girls who showed great commitment to training and games all season.
Our Hockey girls who finished with a bye due to St Hilda’s not having Hockey teams, their season was a good one also, the Open team finished 3rd place and the improvement in the Junior girls was fantastic to see.
And in what seemed like a blink of an eye, the final fixture in the 2023 QGSSSA Netball season was upon us. The last round coincided with home court advantage against St Hilda’s and the girls certainly took this opportunity to finish the season on a high note.
First up on Court 1 was the 8A team who started strongly and never let the opposition into the game to score their biggest win of the season. The 7A team took a narrow lead in the first quarter and played determined Netball to secure a very comfortable win. The 7B team continued their good form and the result was never in doubt going on to post a substantial win.
With three wins from three games St Peters went into Round 2 full of confidence. The Open team led the way and very quickly it was evident that they were the far superior team. Despite this, they did not become complacent but continued to work together to post a massive win and ensure the season finished on a winning note. From the first whistle, it was evident that the Senior B team would have to dig deep if they wanted to secure a win and share the Premiership. The game was all tied up in the first quarter before the girls were gradually able to edge away and go into the final quarter with a lead. The St Hilda girls certainly did not give up; however, the Senior B team maintained their composure to come away with the win much to the relief of Coach Cass. The 7C team were dominant from the start and held the opposition scoreless as they entered the half time break. The result was never in doubt and the team went on to score a comprehensive win.
The Senior A team spear headed the last round and showing the form that had wrapped up the premiership they quickly took control of the game and posted an easy win. The Senior C team were far too strong for their opponents and despite a number of positional changes went on to post a significant win. The 10A team were far too strong defensively which allowed the team to post a significant win.
As St Hilda’s was unable to provide a full contingent of teams there were also a number of internal games played on the day. With coaches joining in, all teams enjoyed the opportunity for one last fun game for the season. Special mention to the Development Squad girls who joined in and soaked up the game day atmosphere and the opportunity to play a game.
A fabulous way to finish the Netball season winning all nine games on offer and securing the only clean sweep of the season. Well done Ladies.
Congratulations to our Round 9 Award Winners - ‘Awarded to the girls that were the bubbliest on court!’
On Monday afternoon we had a wonderful turnout to celebrate the 2023 Netball season. Current Firebird player Emily Moore was our special guest and shared with the girls the ups and downs of her Netball journey. It was a fantastic insight into what is required to take your sport to the next level.
We celebrated our award winners (below), we acknowledged our three Premiership teams.
We thank our Netball PSG for their amazing work throughout the season, we are very grateful for our sponsors that are so generous and continue to provide a long sleeve tee to all girls in our program. We thank this season’s managers who were wonderful and special thanks to all our parents for supporting the girls to play Netball for St Peters.
Our program is what it is today because of our amazing girls and our team of coaches led by Tracey Bruce and Patti Farrell, we thank them all for a wonderful season.

Our Hockey season finished with a bye due to St Hilda’s not having Hockey teams. This gave us the opportunity to celebrate the 2023 season with a fun training session followed by pizza at St Lucy’s! Well done and thank you to all our Hockey girls and their families for their support, the season was an enjoyable one and our niche sport continues to flourish with new players coming in every year. Thank you also to our team of coaches for their work throughout the season.
After an excellent set of results in Round 9 adding to what was already a successful day of fundraising for the Leukemia Foundation, we have reached the end of another season of Volleyball for the girls at St Peters. This season, the program had five teams coming out on top with Opens, Senior A, Senior B, 10A and 9A with plenty of other success across the remaining six teams as well. Across each age group, there was plenty to celebrate with resilient comebacks and resounding wins that exemplified the Plus Ultra attitude. The program has gone from strength to strength on the back of plenty of passion and enthusiasm from the girls. These qualities have also been demonstrated by the parents time and time again through their support for the program and Parent Support Group and are deserving of a heartfelt thank you. A final thank you goes to the coaches, including Head Coach, Matt Young, for their time and expertise in refining the technique and gameplay of the volleyballers.

Last Saturday was the final weekend training session for our State Championship crews and we enjoyed a 32km round trip row from Toowong RC to Mandalay Park, Fig Tree Pocket. We had eight crews making up a wave of pink moving up the river in a flotilla. This is the longest distance many of our junior shed have ever rowed in one session and they all have a fabulous time. I wanted to give a huge shout out to our amazing Rowing PSG and specifically Claudia Matthews, for coordinating a delicious breakfast at the halfway mark and for her stellar breakfast service catering all year. The entire shed are grateful for her time and effort along with all the parents who have supported Claudia getting kids fuelled. We all head to Bundaberg for the Queensland Schools State Rowing Championship regatta this weekend and hope to finish out our season with some hardware to bring home.
Congratulations to all girls who have been part of the QGSSSA Track and Field season. It has been a big season and we thank all girls for their attendance at training and the meets in the lead up to the QGSSSA Track and Field Championships today.
