Director of Community Engagement
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15
How do we encourage the nurturing of faith or spiritual growth in our College community? You might think, I am not a Pastor, a Chaplain, a Christian studies teacher, I am not a regular church goer, I am not a person of great faith, that’s not really my thing. But we are all part of the Christian community present in our school, so we all have a part to play in being formed in faith and influencing others to grow spiritually. Whether we are strong in our Christian identity or not we all impact and influence other people, either positively or negatively. The spiritual values and beliefs we model have an impact on others.
Reflecting on your own spiritual journey, how comfortable are you in talking about your faith, your spirituality to others? Many people find it hard to talk about their spiritual journey for a variety of reasons. They don’t have the language, the background or the confidence. The advantage of teaching in a Lutheran school is that we are all on a journey through life, growing in our knowledge of the Bible, God, and the teachings of the Church together. We are not doing this alone, we are part of a community which welcomes the growth and grace that comes from questioning where are we and where is God in this?
Check out this list of seven 'ush' words below. Seven reasons why people find it hard to talk about their faith. Are there any 'ushs' you empathise with? What would have to change in your life for these 'ushs' not to be a concern or barrier for you?
Prayer:
Gracious God, help me to take time out to reflect on my own faith journey. Encourage me to engage in those spiritual practices which will grow me closer to you. Give me the grace to live out my faith in my school community and when the opportunity arises to share my faith. Teach me Lord that you are with me in a very real way in all the ordinariness of life, of work and of family. Bless me with your presence Jesus as you bless others through me. Amen.

For the safety of all students, staff and parents onsite, I would like to remind parents/guardians to follow the below guidelines when driving and parking around the College.
When driving in and around the school, it is important to follow these key safety tips:
1. Set down and pick up of students on College grounds is not permitted. Parents and visitors are asked to set down and pick up students outside the College grounds. These restrictions apply from 7.00am to 8.15am and again between 2.30pm to 3.30pm.
The below locations are not set down/ pick up zones at any time:
2. The general speed limit on campus is strictly 25kph. While driving past the Prep School the speed limit is 20kph.
3. Inside the grounds, at all times, drivers are to follow the road rules, signs and directions as they would on any public road. ‘No standing’ and ‘parking’ signs have been placed to treat specific risks. NEVER DOUBLE PARK OR PARK IN ‘NO STOPPING’ ZONES or on yellow lines.
4. Several areas on the roads throughout the College have been designated as high traffic pedestrian zones. These areas are indicated by a large painted red area within a yellow border. When approaching any of these zones, please be very cautious and aware that pedestrians may wish to cross and that they have right of way.
5. Prep Centre and Rainforest Boom Gates are closed during the following periods:
6. Prep Carpark – ensure to park in the designated parking bays only. Double parking is not permitted.
7. Students and Learner Drivers are not permitted to drive through the College grounds at any time and at no times should they be parking on College premises.
8. Please remember mobile phones are not to be used whilst driving.
As you are aware, child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and schools alike. Parking spaces during pick up and set down times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices.
While it is certainly not Brisbane City Council's intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving during pick up and drop off times. Over the next school term, Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed (ie parking on yellow lines).
We encourage parents, guardians and visitors of our school to visit Council's website at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules to learn more about parking in Brisbane.
We thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Cancer, cystic fibrosis, and other life-altering genetic disorders currently affect one in 20 Australian children. Jeans for Genes is a campaign orchestrated by the Children’s Medical Research Institute, aiming to spread awareness and raise funds to support research aimed towards curing genetic diseases. This campaign involves wearing jeans to spread awareness and raise money to help find cures and treatments. Since 1994, over $65 million has been raised, which has eliminated rubella, developed microsurgery techniques for organ transplants, and introduced care for premature infants; however, there is still a long way to go. Funds raised on Jeans for Genes Day help scientists at the Children’s Medical Research Institute to discover treatments and cures, giving every child an equal opportunity to live a long and happy life. Your donation not only provides hope, but a better future.
St Peters will be holding Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 5 August and students are encouraged to come to school in their blue denim jeans with a gold coin donation to support this worthwhile cause.
A reminder that student supervision commences at 8.00am each day in Lower Primary, and 7.40am in Upper Primary. Please do not drop students off before these times each day as student safety remains a priority at St Peters.
Any students who do arrive early will be taken to Before School Care, and the appropriate fee will be charged.
I thank you in advance for your positive action regarding before school supervision, as keeping our students safe remains a priority at St Peters.
This week and for the remainder of the year, the Primary Years will be focusing on the International Baccalaureate’s Learner Profile. As we continue in our educational partnership, I encourage you to use the language of the Learner Profile in your homes as you talk with your children. More hints on how to do this in weeks to come…
As a Primary Years parent at St Peters, you are part of a community of learners who contribute meaningfully to your child’s growth and development. While there are several ways you can support your child as a Primary Years Programme (PYP) parent, one of the easiest is through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile. You will see that the Learner Profile sits in the centre of the Primary Years Programme to the left. Understanding, using the words, and living the attributes of the Learner Profile will support your child’s learning and growth throughout the Primary Years.
The Learner Profile is a set of ten personal attributes identified by the International Baccalaureate Organisation that express the values inherent to the IB continuum of international education. Indeed, part of our purpose is to foster the development of internationally minded people who embody all attributes of the learner profile (IB Standards and Practices, Purpose 3 (0101-03). These human capacities and responsibilities go beyond academic success. They support the IB’s mission to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

Well, it was certainly one of the coldest camps I can recall. This, to the Year 8 cohorts’ credit, did not slow them down. Upon arrival on Tuesday we had drizzling cold rain and as the day progressed it became more miserable. Students didn’t let the weather get in the way on the glider possum, still screaming in delight as they flew through the air. Even on the first day there were stories of impressive feats and excellent group encouragement, which only continued and improved over the week.
Students were involved in; archery, canoeing, abseiling, orienteering, team games and exciting elements like the leap of faith and giant swing. Everyday I was told stories of students overcoming fears and ‘getting to the top’. These qualities will serve them well for the future as resilience and perseverance are important life skills.
The variety of activities showcased so many wonderful characteristics of the students, teachers and camp leaders. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the teachers that gave up their time to be away with us for the experience and to run sessions such as leadership skills, karate, fashion design, and table setting.
The students all demonstrated a readiness for Ironbark which will be the next adventure to look forward to.

Shoes
When was the last time you had a good look at your child’s shoes? Do you remember how they sparkled back on their first day of high school? By the time a child reaches high school they are old enough to be helping with, and learning to take care of washing, ironing and organising their school uniform. This includes making sure their shoes are kept in a reasonable state. I encourage all families to create a weekly chore of checking and polishing school shoes. A polish which provides some water proofing, such as Kiwi Shoe Polish or Nugget, works best and helps shoes to last longer.
Trouser & Skirt Length
It appears many of our students have had a growth spurt over the holidays – particularly the boys. Could I please ask that the length of trousers and skirts be checked and adjusted where possible or new items purchased. Skirts are designed to be worn to the base of the knee. They also have waistband size adjusters built in so should not need to be rolled up at the waist.

On Wednesday this week, a group of Year 10 students attended the World Religions Symposium hosted by the Studies in Religion Department at UQ. Along with students from twelve other schools, our students heard fascinating lectures on Galileo and the Church, the Science and Religion Conflict, and Islam and Society. Break times offered an opportunity to relax among the sandstone buildings and gum trees of UQ’s Great Court and debrief from the lectures.
In the 'Science and Religion Conflict' lecture, Associate Professor, Tom Aechtner, debunked the common misperception that Science and Religion have always been in conflict with one another. He demonstrated instead how many key figures in the early modern Scientific Revolution were motivated by their faith and operated on religious presuppositions, and how religious identity and scientific scholarship have not been mutually exclusive ever since. Shifting focus to today, he discussed how religious, political and economic interests have contributed to various kinds of science denial, and how more robust understanding of both religion and science will help societies navigate important issues such as the COVID pandemic.
The 'Islam and Society' lecture, delivered by Dr Ryan Williams, offered students insights into the history and experiences of Muslims in Australia, from pre-colonial interactions between South-East Asian traders and Indigenous Australians through to recent attacks against the Muslim community in Brisbane. An overview of key beliefs and practices of the Islamic faith gave the students a different, and more balanced, picture to what we often see in mainstream media and political discourse.
The day ended with a Q&A session with the presenters, where the students and teachers could ask any questions, from specific questions about the day’s lectures through to the employability of people who study Religion at UQ. It was encouraging to hear about the beneficial, and employable, skills and knowledge gained through Studies in Religion in particular and the Bachelor of Arts more generally. Our students engaged well with the UQ faculty in this Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions. We were also the only group to grab a photo with the lecturers at the end of the day!

The Year 11 Semi Formal, held at the end of Term 2, was a fantastic night enjoyed by all in attendance.
Our Year 11 students were a genuine credit to the St Peters community with regards to their conduct and engagement on the night.
There is no finer way to celebrate the penultimate year of school than with close friends and form class teachers who have enjoyed the journey with the students over the previous 18 months.
We look forward to the remainder of the 2022 as we approach Year 12.

Thank you to the many St Peters families who supported their daughters’ involvement in sport over the weekend, it certainly was a good one for Girls Sport. We really appreciate the support shown by our families to allow us to continue to provide the girls an amazing sporting experience.
To continue our Girls Sport tradition, last Thursday Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney joined us to present the Open uniforms to our 2022 QGSSSA Open Netball, Volleyball, Tennis & Hockey teams & also our 1st VIII Rowers. It was great to have parents attend the presentation as we celebrated the great achievement of the girls, and an opportunity to come together before the season begins.
When presenting the girls their uniforms, Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney spoke about the honour of representing St Peters at the highest level and the role models they are to our younger students. They also spoke about our motto, 'Plus Ultra’ and striving for ever higher to give their all to inspire others in their respective sports.
We thank Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney for joining us and inspiring our girls.

OLD SCHOLARS GAME & 2022 SEASON LAUNCH
For the second year running the St Peters Netball Old Scholars game was a huge success with many of our current Netballers joining us in the gym to watch our 2022 Open Team take on our Old Scholars team. The Old Scholars were a great mix of old & new and proved to be a formidable unit to give the Open team a good hit out before Round 1.
With a fantastic afternoon tea provided on by our Netball PSG, the girls enjoyed watching a high-quality game. The experience of our Old Scholars with Kylie Betson (10A & 8B coach) leading the way saw the Old Scholars get off to a great start, but the determination and talent of the youth in our Open team saw them fight back and they were up by 3 at ¾ time. The last quarter was goal for goal before the Old Scholars got a run on and ended up winning by one point, 26 – 25. What a game, the crowd was vocal, and Mr Kotzur was very impressed!!
We are looking forward to next year already and we thank our Old Scholars for joining us to kick start the 2022 QGSSSA Netball season!
Thank you also to Abbey & Hayley for umpiring and Sophie & Tilly for scoring.
