In my role as Head of College I have the privilege of interacting with our Old Scholars. It’s something that I enjoy. I’m always impressed by our Old Scholars not just what they have achieved in life, but more so who they are as a person. Many remark on the important role that St Peters played in shaping them into the person they have become. As a staff, we have been thinking about the type of person we aspire to help shape, develop and grow through a St Peters education in partnership with you their parents. Many of you will have heard me refer to our students, your children as ‘fine young St Peters people’.
Aspiring to shape and develop our students as ‘fine young people’ is not some throwaway line, nor is ‘fine’ some bland generic word. It is a deliberate and carefully chosen word that encapsulates and conveys a number of things. It speaks of young people of character who are kind, caring, grateful and respectful. People who are resilient and adaptable. People who are lifelong learners. People who are actively engaged and connected in community who seek to use the gifts and talents they have been given to make a difference in their community. Young people who are aspirational, yet humble. People who are open-minded and seek to understand others. Young People who have breadth and depth of character and who have a sense of purpose, hope and of agency.
Growing, developing and shaping fine young St Peters people in partnership with you isn’t always easy or plain sailing. It is however important work and a noble aspiration. Through the educational programs in and out of the classroom, and the learning that occurs through these our young people are given the opportunity and experiences to grow into fine young people.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Managing Screen Time
As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77.00% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.
Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.
Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural and even physical domains.
In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SPYGT
Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. James 1:17
St Peters You’ve Got Talent (SPYGT) has been in full swing at the Indooroopilly campus this last week. Auditions have been happening at lunchtime in the Performing Arts Centre with the finale happening on Friday evening July 28. Students and staff alike are abuzz with excitement at the performances. There’s nothing like a Talent Show to get people talking and appreciating the ability of unknown members of your community. And just like any talent show on television, it is a thrill for an audience to witness a person’s creative skill and ability.
However, it takes guts for the lone boy to get on stage and sing the solo. It takes guts for the girls who have choreographed and practised their dance moves to do it seamlessly when the moment counts. It takes guts to perform in front of your peers not knowing what their response will be. Sitting in some of these lunchtime auditions has made me marvel at the talent and confidence these students have that I certainly did not when I was their age.
Watching students reveal their talent on the big stage under lights made me think of this verse from James; "every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights." Every good creative gift we have is from God our Creator. Our ability to be creative, to perform and to use our artistic gifts and talents is itself a gift from the one who created us. These gifts that we all have reflect the creativity of God. And they are good. They are good and perfect coming from the Father of lights. Now a person can dispute that not every performance in a talent show is perfect but certainly, every performance is a reflection in some way of our creator, our heavenly Father, who is the giver of all light and life in the world.
That’s the beauty of being in a community, of coming together at times like SPYGT or whatever performance it is, when we can uncover and celebrate the gifts and talents God has given to us. Some talent has been well-practised and fine-tuned, and some talent is raw and needs more work. Whatever the gift we have been given, it is a God-pleasing thing when we learn to use it for the good and benefit of our community. When we can celebrate whatever level of performance and whatever level of talent knowing that the individual has courageously shared this for the sake of our community. Sharing every good gift within our St Peters community is a great thing coming down from the Father of Lights.

MMG Survey
As part of our continuous improvement process, we once again wish to provide opportunities for our Years 5 - 12 students across the Indooroopilly and Springfield campuses, to provide us with informed feedback relating to their views of their schooling experience.
The research is being conducted by MMG Education, a specialist education consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG’s client schools include many schools across Australia.
Students will be completing their questionnaires in Week 4 (Monday 31 July - Friday 4 August).
At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education will provide the College with a report. All responses will be de-identified and the data reported back will be in aggregate form only. We will then provide opportunities for members of the College community to receive feedback from the research.
If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact the Head of College office hoc@stpeters.qld.edu.au.

On Wednesday, 19 July our mothers and sons came together to enjoy good food, good company and be inspired by St Peters Old Scholar (1992), Australian music legend and current UQ and Harvard Medical School student, Cameron Callope.
Cameron is Indigenous from the Gkuthaarn peoples (Gulf of Carpentaria) and Thunakwithi peoples (Western Cape York). He was born in Normanton, North Queensland (home of the biggest croc ever caught!). He moved to Brisbane at 15 years old to chase a love of Rugby and Music. Following school, Cameron tried his hand at a great variety of jobs including cattle work, cleaning and vehicle repair to name a few.
Cameron forged a successful 25 year career in the music and entertainment industries, from artist/performer to manager, tour agent, promoter of major local, national and international events with the global elite including Snoop Dog, Johnny Depp, Beyonce, Jay-Z and many others. He was the first rapper in Australia to win a certified National Music Award (1998, National Vibe Awards) and in 2013 was inducted with a Legend Award by MusicOz at the Australian Independent Music Awards for his contribution to Australian music and the Australian people. Having spent periods of his young adult life homeless, through it all, Cameron remained committed to finding the best and most authentic version of himself. He wanted to give back and, after he saw the power of medicine in his own life, he decided to use it to transform the lives of others. For the last eight years, Cameron has dedicated himself to studying Public Health and Clinical Medicine at UQ and Harvard Medical Schools.
“I believe St Peters gave me the platform to know how to operate in a world where the doors of opportunity open and all I had to do was walk through.”
Cameron inspired everyone with his assertion that life can take unexpected twists and turns but that ultimately, that’s where the fun comes from! He encouraged the young men to take every opportunity offered, no matter how small, because you never know where it might lead. The fact that Cameron is an Old Scholar certainly added to the gravity of his message.
As always, thank you to the Food Services, Housekeeping, Hospitality and Communications teams and Senior student, Matthew T, for assisting in making this such a successful event.

Let us take a closer look at the ten attributes that shape our students' characters:
Inquirers: Encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and a love for learning.
Knowledgeable: Fostering a deep understanding of various subjects and global issues.
Thinkers: Developing problem solving abilities and encouraging innovation.
Communicators: Teaching effective communication in diverse settings and languages.
Principled: Instilling integrity, honesty and a strong sense of justice.
Open-Minded: Embracing different perspectives, cultures and ideas.
Caring: Nurturing empathy and compassion for others.
Risk-Takers: Approaching unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and have the independence of spirit to explore new things.
Balanced: Promoting a healthy lifestyle and a balanced approach to life's demands.
Reflective: Cultivating the habit of self-assessment and continuous improvement.
Throughout the year, our dedicated teachers have been incorporating these attributes into daily lessons, projects and activities to create a supportive environment that nurtures each child's personal growth. They are also an integral component of our weekly Head of Primary Years Awards at Primary Years Assemblies.
We also encourage you, as parents, to reinforce these attributes at home by engaging in meaningful conversations and encouraging your child's involvement in community service and extracurricular activities.
Together, we can develop a love for learning, respect for others and a sense of responsibility for our world. We are confident that the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile will not only prepare our students for academic success but also empower them to become compassionate and principled leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering the holistic development of our young learners.

Year 2 Excursion to D’Aguilar National Park
On Wednesday 19 July, Year 2 went on a spectacular excursion to the D’Aguilar National Park. Through the Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, students have been exploring stories to learn about how the First Nations Peoples lived in harmony with their country.
With Murray Arkadieff as our guide, students were led through the Turrbal Circuit. One of the highlights of this walk was the meditation time. Sitting on the rock, each child closed their eyes and peacefully listened to the chirping birds and swaying branches.
Dr Sam Lloyd, the author of 'Alight', taught the students about planned fires. One way to look after the country was by lighting fires at a specific time. This allows seeds to open and bloom. Without it, plants like Christmas Bells would never flower!
Thank you, Murray and Sam, for sharing your knowledge with our students.

With one more training session to go before the RG Championships on Friday 4 August, we wish you all the best with your final preparations.
Last night to continue the Girls Sport tradition, Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney presented the Open Girls with their Rhythmic Gymnastics Open team shirt. When presenting to the girls, Mr Kotzur spoke about the honour of representing St Peters at the highest level and the role models they are to our younger students. He also spoke about our motto, ’Plus Ultra’ and striving for ever higher to give their all to inspire others in their respective sports.
We thank Mr Kotzur and Mrs Delaney for joining us last night and for supporting the girls, I think they were very impressed with their fabulous routines!

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Round 2 v Moreton Bay College was a round of mixed results. It began on Friday night with our Tennis Girls enjoying playing under the amazing new lights on Lohe Street Courts to win all age groups. Our Hockey Girls came away with two losses, but the Open team put on an unbelievable display to go down to the powerhouse of Moreton Bay College by one point. The Junior team were beaten but there was a lot of learning had by all. Volleyball and Netball fought hard across all age groups, with some tough losses but some great wins. The Open Volleyball team didn’t have it all their own way but ended up winning in three sets. Open Netball fought hard, but the quality opposition made it hard going down by 10.
Round 3 this Saturday we play Clayfield College and some Brisbane Girls Grammar No. 2 teams across all sports playing in the Clayfield draw.
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck to all teams.
Reminder - Communicate with your coordinator if unable to attend a training session or a game. Early communication particularly for a game is very important.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor, and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions are not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.
Date Claimers:
Round 3: Saturday 29 July v Clayfield College (Home) Round 4: Saturday 5 August v Somerville House (Away) Round 5: Saturday 12 August v Brisbane Girls Grammar School (Home) Round 6: Saturday 19 August v St Aidan’s (Away) Round 7: Saturday 26 August v Brisbane State High School (Home) Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s (Home)
In Round 2, our fixtures were played across three venues. Our 10B2 and Senior C2 teams which play in the St Aidan’s draw, had games against Brisbane State High School. Despite having only seven players due to illness, the 10B2 team fought hard throughout the four quarters and ended the game with a draw. The Senior C2 team took some time to find their rhythm but made positional changes at halftime, which helped them pull away and secure a solid win.
Meanwhile, the 10B1 team travelled to UQ and faced the Brisbane Girls Grammar 10B3 team. They displayed dominance in the game, achieving a resounding victory with a score of 91 - 4.
For our remaining teams, playing at Moreton Bay College on a cold Saturday morning is always challenging. In the first round of games, our 7A, 7B, 8A, 8B, 10A, and Senior B teams had tough matchups. The 7A game was particularly intense, with both teams going goal for goal. Although we fought hard and came close, we lost by just one goal.
The 10A team with its revamped lineup, the injury-affected 8A team and the 8B team playing their first game of the season all faced challenging matches and ended up going down. However, the Senior B and 7B teams managed to secure wins, which was great to see.
Round 2 saw the Open Team take the court, they were defeated by the highly skilled Moreton Bay College team. Additionally, the 9B, Senior A and 8C teams also took the court, with the Senior A and 9B teams securing their second consecutive victories, and the 8C team putting up a good fight in their first game of the season.
Looking ahead to Round 3, we wish our teams playing against Clayfield College/BGGS2 teams and our Senior C2 team playing Ipswich Girls' Grammar all the best for Saturday. It will be great to see the 9C team take the court for their first game of the season.
Congratulations to our Round 2 Award Winners, our on court ‘GEMS’! 😊

Date claimer: Vicki Wilson State Championships – Friday 4 & Saturday 5 August
Due to the Vicki Wilson Final Series being played on Saturday 4 August, the Round 4 v Somerville House games for the 8A, 9A & Open teams will be rescheduled to Monday 14 August, further details to follow.
A big well done to the Opens team who fought hard for 60 minutes to narrowly lose 3 - 2. Moreton Bay have been one of the major Hockey schools for many years, so to put up such a fight was impressive. Juniors had a tougher assignment on Field Five, but impressively let in half of the goals they conceded in the first half. The girls learnt quickly that you need to be aggressive and physical against strong opposition, and they certainly did that better in the second half.
This weekend we are scheduled to play Clayfield College, but they only have one team in the Senior division, meaning our Opens and Junior teams are on a bye.
I look forward to seeing you on Thursday at training so we can continue to build our skills in preparation for Round 4.

It is anticipated that more than 2500 people will attend this regatta. The hosting of this event is a large logistical undertaking facilitated by the Rowing Parent Support Group to ensure we take full advantage of this fundraising opportunity. With Round 1 of AIC Basketball and Tennis now complete, we turn our focus to this coming weekend where St Peters will compete against St Laurence’s College in Round 2. Our senior teams will be playing at Home whilst our junior teams will be Away at St Laurence’s.
Our First and Seconds Basketball and Tennis will play Friday night in what should be a rocking evening of Basketball and Tennis.
Special mention must go to all our Year 7 - Open AIC Tennis teams who walked away from Round 1 with wins. It was great to hear about and witness the enthusiasm and pride our tennis players competed with.
Equally, it was also sensational to watch our First V Basketball team compete so vigorously in a tightly contested game against St Edmund’s College First V. St Peters finished strongly in the third and fourth quarters to come away with a solid win. Congratulations to all our Tennis and Basketball teams for their determination and enthusiasm in Round 1. For St Peters, it has definitely been a great start to Term 3 AIC sport.
Last week, St Peters also nominated over 90 students to compete at the Northern Eagle District Track & Field Trials at QSAC. St Peters athletes were extremely impressive both on and off the field of play. We now have many of these athletes selected into the Northern Eagles District team to compete at the up and coming Metropolitan West Regional Trials. Congratulation to the St Peters athletes who also broke one or several Northern Eagles District Records in their respective events.
Round 2 AIC Basketball & Tennis Details
For more information pertaining to game times and venues of all Boy’s Sport fixtures for this coming weekend (Round 2 AIC Basketball & Tennis verse St Laurence’s), please check the St Peters App.
An important reminder to all students about our College’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters Track Top and Track Pants are to be worn.

Congratulation on Representative Honours
Congratulations to Luca N who has been selected in an emerging talent Baseball team that will tour the US in late August. Luca has had a stellar year on the baseball diamond. Apart from winning his club premiership with Windsor Royals and the Queensland State Title representing Brisbane Metro, Luca competed in the Australian Baseball Championships in Adelaide mid-year. Luca also travelled to Cairns to compete in the Queensland U14 State Championships where he won the Tournament MVP, Batting Award and was selected in the Queensland Team.
In recognition of his performances, he was subsequently selected for the Brisbane Bandits Youth Academy and also the Baseball Queensland U16 Development Squad. Luca is hoping to make the Queensland U16 Baseball Team to contest the National titles in January 2024. His aim is to make the Australian U16 team in the next 24 months so his selection of this tour is strong recognition that his performances to date have been noticed and he is on the right path. Congratulations Luca!

Council Notice to Members of the Community
A notice to the community that over the coming term Council Inspectors will be conducting patrols around the College to promote safe parking and ensure that motorists are complying with local traffic conditions. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
While it is certainly not Council’s intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving during pick up and drop off times.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask that parents, guardians and visitors to visit Council’s website at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and search parking rules to learn more about parking in Brisbane.

SPOSA Tennis Tournament and Lohe Street Tennis Lights
There was a buzz surrounding the Lohe Street Tennis Courts on Sunday, with the second annual SPOSA Tennis Tournament taking place. Over 20 doubles teams made up of current students, Old Scholars and current parents competed for the trophy. The final saw Zinta M (Year 6) and Old Scholar Matt Stubbings take on Luke D (Year 12) and his dad. The quality of tennis throughout the afternoon, and in particular during the final, was incredibly impressive. After a hard fought battle, Luke D and his dad were victorious for a second year in a row! Congratulations and thank you to all players for coming along to support the St Peters Tennis community. Huge thanks also to Amanda Osborne and SPOSA, the St Peters Old Scholars Association, for their continued support of this event.
This year’s event was extra special, with the official Turning on the Lights taking place before the finals were played. During the recent school holidays, tennis lights were installed on all five Lohe Street Tennis Courts and they are already making a huge difference to the tennis program. St Peters hosted Moreton Bay College last Friday night under the lights for QGSSSA fixtures, and students can commence training earlier in the morning and train later into the night.
The installation of tennis court lights has been a huge team effort by St Peters families, the P&F and the College. The Tennis Support Group is very grateful for the support this project has been shown.
Special mention must be made to the P&F, who contributed $40,000.00 to the cost of the Lohe Street tennis lights, and our parent donors who raised $50,000.00. These significant contributions expedited the tennis lights and have delivered an incredible facility for both current and future St Peters students.
We sincerely thank our donor parents, Rob Barber and the P&F, and the College for their commitment and support of St Peters Tennis.
