During the last month of Term 2 I had the opportunity to take some time for sabbatical. Part of the purpose of my Sabbatical was to engage in a period of focused professional learning removed from the day-to-day environment of leading a large complex school. I was fortunate to undertake a couple of short courses at Graduate Schools of leading American Universities. I found the time to be stimulating and energising. (Love of Learning is one of my top Character Strengths!) The opportunity to learn from some of the leading University Professors in their field; to interact in respectful discussion with people from different cultures around the world and be challenged in my thinking; and having to prepare for classes the next day by reading journal articles late into the night was a truly amazing opportunity. It certainly provoked my learning about how we can continue to develop and improve St Peters.
The whole experience reminded me of the importance of being a lifelong learner. The world around us continues to change at an increasing rate. Our ability to adapt to these changes, thrive actually, is dependent upon our ability to continue to learn. It’s been suggested that we need to be able to learn at least as fast as the rate of change in the environment in which we live and operate. The experience also reminded me of the importance of a St Peters education empowering our students to become Lifelong Learners by helping them develop the skills and learning dispositions that will enable them to learn throughout their lives long after they have graduated from the College. As important as the subject content that our students learn in their classes are the skills of learning. We endeavour to address this in a number of ways. For example, the International Baccalaureate PYP Program that the College offers in the Primary Years places a strong emphasis on developing key learning dispositions that helps our youngest students to be effective learners both now and into future. I was delighted when I walked around the campus last week to see practical examples of those skills of learning being taught and practiced. The Year 7s for example were setting Learning Goals in their Pastoral Care class and some of the Year 12 Biology classes were undertaking Mind mapping activities to consolidate their prior knowledge in preparation for the unit ahead.
As we continue to develop St Peters as a flourishing learning community the skills of learning (the how) combined with the subject matter (the what) will continue to play an important part of a St Peters Education.
Tim Kotzur
Head of College
Since 1945, St Peters Lutheran College has valued its school uniform, serving as a means of common ground for students that unites them. Despite various changes over more than seven decades, the purpose of the College uniform has always been to enable students to develop a sense of belonging and connectedness to St Peters as a unique educational and faith community.
Wearing of the uniform is important in establishing and building our culture. A strong culture of wearing our uniform proudly supports a school environment that has; a strong sense of community, is committed to the pursuit of excellence and where student ownership of their learning and behaviour is important. The uniform serves to establish the College’s expectations of students and students’ expectations of themselves. When dressed to a high standard, students’ choices reflect those high standards. It also teaches self-discipline and instils self-respect.
The College is conservative in its approach to the Student Dress Code. The uniform is designed to create a sense of individual and collective pride in identification as a student of the College.
When following the Student Dress Code and wearing the uniform correctly, the roots of self-discipline automatically start growing into their character. This prepares them for roles into adulthood where they have to dress a certain way, like an interview or a formal meeting.
Wearing the uniform correctly is an expectation for all students enrolled at the College. The school uniform draws attention to our College, and great care should be taken to ensure it is always worn to a high standard, is kept clean, neat, repaired and replaced, as necessary.
We ask all students to reflect on what it means to be a member of the St Peters Lutheran College community, to remember who they represent when they are wearing the College uniform and to ensure that they are always wearing it with pride.
Over the coming weeks I will be focussing on the many different components of the College uniform, highlighting the College expectations and possible consequences for not meeting these expectations.

This week we spotlight the Learner Profile caring.
Students who are CARING want people around them to be happy and are sensitive to their needs.
They think about the world and work to take care of their community and the environment. They
remember to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated.
How can parents help to develop students who are Caring at home?
I encourage you as parents to be on the ‘look out’ for these reflections of care in your home, name them and talk about them. Drop into both Primary Years Administrations if you feel as though you would like to access our ‘caring’ cards for use in your home.
Year 11’s began the 2023 Prefect selection process last week as the annual Leadership Breakfast series began. These breakfasts are optional (free) breakfasts for students who have an interest in further developing their leadership skills and potentially serving as a College Prefect next term/year. Each session is planned and presented by specific members of the College Leadership Team and reflects the College Leadership model. These optional sessions are a continuation from the sessions all Year 11 students participated in during Pastoral Care time in term 2.
Mr Kotzur (Head of College) was the first presenter on Thursday last week, followed by Mrs Delaney (Deputy Head of College) on Monday morning. Both groups of students were engaged through these interactive and thought-provoking sessions albeit with different focus points.
Over the coming week, applications for Prefect positions will open and this will constitute the beginning of the formal part of the nomination process. By the end of this term, we hope to announce the 2023 Prefect Team, ready to assume their responsibilities in Term 4 and transition from the 2022 Prefect Team. College Captains will be announced at the beginning of the 2023 school year.

With Round 1 of AIC Basketball and Tennis now complete, we turn our focus to this coming weekend where St Peters will compete against Villanova College in Round 2. Our Senior teams will be playing ‘away’ whilst our Junior teams will be ‘home’ at St Peters.
Special mention must go to all our Year 7 to Open AIC Tennis teams who walked away from Round 1 with wins. It was great to hear about and witness the enthusiasm and pride our tennis players competed with.
Equally, it was also sensational to watch our First V Basketball team compete so vigorously in a tightly contested game against Padua College First V. St Peters finished the game victoriously 11 points ahead at the final siren. Congratulations to all our Tennis and Basketball teams for their determination and enthusiasm in Round 1. For St Peters, it has definitely been a great start to Term 3 AIC sport.
Last week, St Peters also nominated over 90 students to compete at the Northern Eagle District Track & Field Trials at QSAC. St Peters athletes were extremely impressive both on and off the field of play. We now have many of these athletes selected into the Northern Eagles District team to compete at the up and coming Metropolitan West Regional Trials. Congratulation to the St Peter’s athletes who also broke one or several Northern Eagles District Records in their respective events.

During a windy and challenging day on the water at Wyaralong Dam, there were some exceptional performances from the BSRA St Peters Rowing squad in their first Regatta of the season. Particular congratulations to the following crews who walked away with podium finishes;
The wind was unfortunate and resulted in the cancelation of all year eight, single scull and the second round of races last weekend.
We are looking forward to seeing the year eight crews race in their first regatta of the season this weekend at the second of the BSRA Rowing regattas. Good luck girls!
