As you may be aware the College’s current Strategic Plan titled ‘Strategic Vision 2016-2020’ concludes at the end of the year. Much of it has been implemented. The pending conclusion of the current plan, means that a new one needs to be developed. The ground work for our next Strategic Intent commenced last year, and has continued this year, albeit interrupted somewhat by COVID-19 last term.

Work in recent times has focused on developing the Strategic Architecture (see below) of our next Strategic Intent. The Strategic Architecture gives shape to our Strategic Intent and how we will organise it. The draft Strategic Architecture consists of series of Strategic Pillars that either directly ‘Delivers the Mission’ of the College or indirectly helps to ‘Support the Mission’ of the College. These Strategic Pillars have been arrived upon using data available to the College as to where it is at in terms of development, extensive review of educational developments, and examining what leading schools across the world are doing.

As you can see from the organising diagram below there are six Strategic Pillars that help to ‘Deliver the Mission’ and six that help to ‘Support the Mission’.

The focus of our efforts in Semester 2 will be developing the Strategic Intents (a compelling statement about where St Peters is going and what we hope to achieve) and the Strategic Actions or Initiatives (how we are going to make the Strategic Intent a reality) for each of the Strategic Pillars. Input into possible Strategic Initiatives or Actions will be sought from across the College using a range of mechanisms, including parents at a Parents & Friends Meeting this semester.

I look forward to sharing further details as the evolution of our next Strategic Intent continues.

This is the commitment with which Ruth responds to Naomi, her mother in law. Both their husbands have died and Naomi decides to return to her home country. Ruth follows Naomi even when Naomi points out to her that she will become a stranger in a foreign land (Book of Ruth).

I was reminded by this beautiful biblical story when thinking about the celebration of NAIDOC week as someone who came from a different continent. 'NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.' And we are called upon, every one of us, living in this country, “to embrace and acknowledge the true history of the country – a history which dates back thousands of generations, with the footprints of First Nations peoples the first to fall on Australian soil, with a deep and ongoing spiritual and cultural connection to the land and sea being maintained to the present day.”

Being Australian or ‘becoming a citizen’ of this land, challenges us – to say it with Ruth – to listen to the Indigenous people who teach us about this land, their wisdom and deep connectedness to the land we call ‘home’. Their stories feed the Australian story in their wise and joyful story. But this story is also a story of deep inflicted injustice and pain caused by those who ‘conquered this land’ and denied them their basic human rights, inflicting deep wounds that everyone of us is still called to acknowledge. Every Australian is called to participate in the process of reconciliation. Everyone who identifies as Australian is challenged to embrace the story of those who have occupied this land for 65,000 years. 

NAIDOC Week celebration is just another opportunity granted to us to listen to the Indigenous people of this land, so that we as Australians understand the story of its first nation. To understand and to respect the story of the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people allows us to figure out the way on which we together can heal the hurts of the past, and move together into a joint, reconciled future, weaving the story of Australia, this ancient land, of which every single citizen is a part of.

As communicated last term, class and group photos will not be taken in 2020 due to group gathering restrictions and social distancing requirements.  A composite class photo will instead be produced using student portrait photos.

Your child/ren will be handed their personalised photography envelope in class this week giving full details of ordering and payment.  

• Simply review the variety of photo packages available and follow the instructions on the back of the envelope.  
• Envelopes are personalised to each student with name and shoot key.  Students will need to present their own envelope to the photographer on photo day, even if payment is in another sibling’s envelope or if you order online.  This is to aid in faster and correct processing of student names.

Support Jeans for Genes Day

Jeans for Genes Day is the fundraising campaign of Children’s Medical Research Institute. Australians unite by wearing their favourite jeans and donating money to support genetic research. Since it began in 1994 over $65 million has been raised to help find cures and treatments for Childhood Diseases. All the money raised goes directly to research aimed at curing childhood genetic diseases, which currently affects one in 20 Australian kids. The funds will help scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute discover treatments and cures, to give every child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. 

On Friday 7 August students have permission to come to College in their blue jeans, sports or house shirt and shoes (Year 12 in Senior Jersey) for a Gold Coin Donation. In the last few years this has been a great opportunity for the whole of Year 12 cohort to have group photo with their jeans and senior jerseys on!

This year the whole College will have the opportunity to support this worthwhile cause.

Year 10 Pathway and Subject selection information evenings and presentations are now completed. SET Plan interviews will be held next week and whilst they are not compulsory, we encourage all families to access this service. Time, location and details are below. Chapels and Assemblies return!

This week we can have modified Chapel services for both Lower and Upper Primary students. There will be a smaller number of students, socially distanced, to hear an important message from Chaplain Kirstin. Not all year levels will have this opportunity each week, so Kirstin will also send her pre-recorded devotion to all teachers so that this can be viewed and appreciated one way or the other. This week the Year 5 students visited, with students in 5A actively involved in the service. On Wednesday our Prep to Year 2 students once again ventured up to the Chapel. It's lovely to have students together again.

Assemblies

It is a great opportunity to get together en masse and reaffirm expectations around behaviour by viewing our Primary Years Essential Agreements, celebrate achievements, distribute current news and deliver key pastoral care lessons to a wider audience. We are at a point that we can now achieve this, albeit in a modified version.

Upper Primary returned to their regular fortnight assemblies in the PAC today. Having all students together to disseminate important notices as well as celebrate learning is something we have all looked forward to.

In the Lower Primary, due to restrictions, we are running two separate assemblies for Prep to Year 2 and for Years 3 and 4 each fortnight.  The key focal point this term is Friendship.

Mr Glass, Acting Deputy Head of Lower Primary, has already been working with the students on this concept – unpacking exactly what this looks like and how to maintain positive friendships.

He writes:

In an early educational environment, there are often issues with friendships and this term we will be focussing on the following areas:

• How do you make friends? What behaviours are attractive to others.
• What does a positive friendship look and feel like?
• To have great friends you need to be one yourself
• Friendship v Ownership
• How to stand up for yourself within a friendship group when things go array.
• What’s your plan B, for when your friend wants to play with someone else?
• How to win and lose – is it worth losing a friend over a game?
• Tolerance – we all have traits that annoy others, be patient and be kind.

Friendships are often tricky and ever changing, so it is important for teachers and parents to be patient and help coach the children through their current problem with a balanced and supportive approach. We need to understand that friendships are at times complex and choosing the right friends, being patient, being brave and being flexible are skills we need to possess to help navigate these rough waters in the future.

We love celebrating the achievements of the students and this will continue during these mini assemblies. Principal Awards will continue to be presented but we have also commenced a segment called Big Ups. This is simply when someone would like to highlight the positive actions of another by giving them a big thumbs up. Last week the Teachers kicked off our Big Ups by catching students throughout the week for positive actions such as picking up random rubbish to protect our environment, for being an inclusive friend to all and for commencing the term with a great attitude.

Sport and cocurricular Music is also returning to our school lives.  Please check relevant emails or Firefly pages from those involved in leading these activities for details. While opportunities are opening up for the students, unfortunately we must advise that parents are not able to come onto campus. For the safety of everyone in our community please abide by these regulations.

As always, make sure you take time to read the year level blogs on Firefly which are written and uploaded regularly. This should give you a good understanding of what is happening in your child’s schooling each week.

A reminder that House shirts are now a part of the uniform items required by students. This week students should have been wearing them to their Athletics Carnival.  Next week we will be supporting Jeans for Genes Day and students are again required to wear their House shirts for the day if they wish to participate.   

Ironbark 2021

Information regarding Ironbark 2021 will soon be placed on the Year 8 page on Firefly.  There will be a video which outlines the dates for 2021 and the process of allocating students to groups.  Parents will receive an email with a link to the video.

A reminder that Michael Gross’ website ‘Parenting Ideas’ is a great resource for parents.  I regularly add copies of his INSIGHTS articles on the Junior High Parent Information page on Firefly. SOAR Program

This term there is an opportunity for Year 7 students to participate in a wellbeing program run by the Junior High Counsellor, Miss Jess Mason. The SOAR program is designed to increase the confidence and communication skills of participants, develop healthy thinking patterns and build strategies to help with anxiety through a small group approach. The program has been developed for Year 7 students and is based on the acronym SOAR: 

• STOP the anxious thought
• Look at my OPTIONS
• Pick an ACTION
• And REPEAT

The one hour program will be held across five weeks, launching in Week 3 of Term 3 on Friday during Period 5. If you wish for your child to be involved please contact Miss Mason, Junior High Counsellor (j.mason@stpeters.qld.edu.au). The group size is deliberately kept small but the program is repeated throughout the year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Nicole Maynard for her work over the past five years as our Senior School Receptionist, Attendance Officer and Admin Assistant. I know that Nicole was often the first contact many parents had when contacting the school, either on site in Luther House or on the phone.  Her warm and welcoming disposition was a wonderful asset to our Senior School team, and something I know our community valued. We wish Nicole all the best in her new role at the College as the Administrative Assistant for the Curriculum Coordinators in the Academic Hub. This week we have welcomed Mrs Paige Fitzpatrick to our community and have no doubt that she will enjoy the opportunity to support students, staff and parents in her new role replacing Nicole.

Year 12 News - Mr Mark Manson

The planning for the Valedictory Dinner is underway with the student committee selected and already they have selected the colour scheme and designed the invitations that will be delivered electronically this week. The students are very excited and thankful that this event is at this point in time going ahead. Parents will receive information in the next week.

The students will today attend their last ever school carnival and in a whole series of 'lasts' they will no doubt become a little nostalgic. They will be encouraged to make every day count and enjoy these events.

Year 11 News - Mrs Amanda Huxham

The Leadership breakfasts have commenced, with approximately 60 potential leaders in attendance at the first meeting on Monday led by Mr Kotzur. Year 11 students who are interested in leadership are encouraged to attend the remaining sessions, held from 7am this Wednesday, and next Monday and Wednesday mornings. The breakfasts are a great opportunity for students to learn leadership skills as well as receiving support in writing their leadership application if they are interested in applying for a formal leadership position.

In the Academic Care and Wellbeing program this week students will commence a new unit on developing grit. The first topic, 'Grit and Achievement' will be discussed in our Year Level Meeting and students will follow up in class time on related activities. The skills learnt in this unit are to help develop perseverance both inside and outside of the classroom, particularly in the face of challenging circumstances. 

From the Deputy Head of Senior School- Mr Joel Butler

This week begins the process of selecting our Prefect Team for 2021. It is important to note that this process is the formal part of a journey that began when they entered the Senior School. Our Academic Care and Wellbeing programs are deliberately structured to include formal ‘Leadership” units, along with many discrete incidental ‘leadership’ opportunities throughout their Senior School experience. During the process of electing a Prefect Team, we ask students to contemplate their willingness to serve as leaders through their Senior year of schooling. Accordingly, we ask students to reflect on how they have served others over their time at the College and in the wider community. This deliberate focus on ‘servant leadership’  is the underpinning principle of our College model.

As a College, we acknowledge all Year 12 students as 'Senior Leaders' however, the Prefect group is a team within the cohort, that has a proven track record of service within our community. They are given the opportunity to set the standards, to plan and implement the goals for 2021, and role model the expectations of the College community. 

It was also great to see the 2020 Prefects, House Leaders and Sport Leaders step up to support the annual Sports Carnival. This year, due to COVID restrictions, a very different Sports Day involved six separate carnivals being run over a three-day period. Many thanks to Mr Nodwell and the Sports House team who found a way to make it happen. At a time where many other schools are cancelling, the Sports House team went out of their way to ensure the day continued in some format and it was great to see our students enjoying the days and working with their House team to enjoy our participation-based carnival format.

Each year, St Peters Music Department invites Arts professionals to lead a Music Masterclass for the students involved in the Music Program. It is with great pleasure that we invite you all to attend a Violin/Viola Masterclass with Ms Courtenay Cleary. The Masterclass will be held on Friday 16 August in the PAC Auditorium from 3:30pm – 5:30pm.

A Masterclass is an open lesson in which an expert musician works with a number of selected students in front of an audience. The intention is to provide a learning experience for the performers and audience members. Those in the audience benefit and learn from watching the performances and hearing the suggestions given to the performers by the expert teacher. 

Four Upper Strings performers have been selected to perform for Ms Cleary and receive feedback regarding tips to improve string technique, stylistic interpretation and performance skills. All Upper Strings students are encouraged to be in the audience for this event as it will be a wonderful opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s outstanding new string talents.

Entry is free, and students are requested to arrive on time and stay for the entire session. Parents are also welcome to attend. Please ensure mobile phones are turned off or left outside for the duration of the event. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place. All attendees will be expected to respect these expectations and directions from staff.

Boys Basketball and Tennis

Years 4 & 5 and Year 6 AIC Basketball will be played a shortened season in Weeks 1-4. All Basketball games will be played on Friday afternoons and Tennis on Saturday mornings. Players can find weekly game times and venues on the St Peters APP.

Preseason Football

Preseason Football has begun. Year 6 preseason Football will be on Friday mornings (6:30am – 7:45am at Harts Road). Years 4 & 5 preseason Football will be held on Friday afternoon (During Sport for Life - on Stolz Oval). A sign-on email has been sent to all Years 4-6 boy’s parents concerning the AIC Football season that will be played from Weeks 5-9 of the term.

Preseason Rugby

Preseason Rugby has begun. Preseason Rugby will be on Friday afternoons (3:30pm – 4:30pm on Mayer Oval) and Wednesday afternoons (3:30pm – 5:00pm). All training will be on Mayer Oval. A sign-on email has been sent to all Years 4-6 boy’s parents concerning the AIC Football season that will be played from Weeks 5-9 of the term.

St Peters will play a shortened eight week season throughout Term 3. Training will be held on Wednesday afternoon (3:30pm – 5:00pm at Harts Road Courts). WDNA has updated their website with the eight week season draws. Player Season Fee information has been sent to all players. The $150 player fee is due on Wednesday 5 August.

AIC Cross Country Training

Years 5 and 6 who have been selected on the AIC DRAFT Cross Country Team are invited to train on Monday and Wednesday afternoons (3:30pm – 4:15pm). Players are to meet at Lower Primary Undercroft. Training will run Week 1-4 of Term 3.

Winter Fixture Sports – Netball, Volleyball, Tennis & Hockey

Round 5 v St Margaret’s has been moved from Saturday 15 August to Friday 14 August. This change has been made to allow the girls to play their sport on Friday morning and then they are free to enjoy the long weekend with their families.

Round 2 v Brisbane Girls Grammar School was a mixed bag! Unfortunately, Tennis and Netball were completely cancelled due to the rain.

The Hockey games went ahead in tough conditions on grass at Rangakarra. Well done to Mr Glass and his team of coaches, the girls fought hard in the trying conditions, no wins were recorded but there were lots of positives to build on throughout the season.

St Peters QG Volleyball is going from strength to strength. Well done to Mr Singh and the amazing team of coaches for a great start to the 2020 season. With wins in 10 of the 14 games we are looking forward to taking on Somerville House in a full draw this Saturday.

Our Rowing girls are working hard to prepare for the 4 BSRA Rowing Regattas that are now back on the calendar in August – Mr Hicks will advise further details.

QG Track & Field training continues this week and our Track & Field Coordinators Mr Nodwell, Mr Donatini and Mr Lohe are excited as they prepare for the QG Track & Field Championship on Thursday 17 September (Student Free Day at the end of this Term) – that is seven weeks away!  Well done girls on a great turn out this week!

This week the Sport Department is hosting the Interhouse Track & Field Carnival over three days. Under modified conditions each Year level rotates through six activities - Long Jump, Ball Games, Turbo Jav, Hoop Throw, Sprints and Tug-O-War - and the days finished with a Tug-O-War finale and Sprint relays. It is loads of fun, the students are enjoying the sunshine and the break from the classroom.

Special mention the Mr Nodwell and all the Sports House team, it a huge effort but one we are all enjoying.

Run Club / Middle Distance Running continues to draw large numbers of girls enjoying the Mrs Schreiber running sessions. Further details can be found on the St Peters App.

Equestrian - Well done to Sienna Owen who rode very well in the cold, wet and windy conditions in the Glennie School Interschool event in Toowoomba last Saturday. Sienna competed in the Show Jumping event. This was a warmup event as Sienna prepares for the State Championship later in the year. Good luck Sienna for this week’s Somerville House hosted event.

Round 2 Wrap v BGGS

The weather was certainly hostile for our first Hockey fixture for 2020, and so were our opposition. Despite good starts both the Opens and Seniors suffered large losses. We have some work to do this week, particularly on our defence marking and decision making. But the season is young, and we will no doubt improve. Many of us were just happy that the fixture was over! The girls battled bravely in horrendous conditions. Easily the worst game of Hockey many of our girls have been part of. We look onward and upwards for our fixture this week against Somerville. On a brighter note was the Juniors 4-1 loss. They played one player short the entire game and at one stage had our superstar Niamh off for a quarter after receiving a stick to the chest. This Junior group showed such grit in challenging circumstances and I am excited about what this group will achieve over the next six years!!

Training is going well as we prepare for the 2020 QG Championships – seven weeks to go!

AIC Boys Sport -TERM 3

The week that was proved to be a challenging one for us all. We have many cancelations both mid-week for training and on the weekend for fixtures in both Tennis and Basketball. However, we were lucky enough to get some Basketball games played at indoor venues.

I would like to especially acknowledge our 2nd V Basketball team for their ‘gutsy’ win against St Patrick’s College. Watching this game epitomised what all St Peters sporting teams should be aiming to achieve and work towards - a never say die attitude, great sportsmanship and working hard to support your teammates.

AIC Basketball and AIC Tennis Round 3 - After the disappointment of ‘washed out’ games last Saturday we now look forward to this Saturday’s Round 3 games verse Iona College. Our senior teams are away to Iona College whilst our Junior teams are at home. 

We wish every St Peters team the very best and encourage them to represent their College with pride and enthusiasm in Round 3 of Tennis and Basketball.

AIC Football, AIC Rugby and AIC Chess pre-season training is now also commenced. We encourage all boys who are participating in these sports to ensure they know when their training is on (please check the St Peters App). For all students who are also participating in either Basketball or Tennis, please be reminded that attending Basketball or Tennis training takes priority over Rugby or Football as they are the ‘in-season’ sports.

This Saturday afternoon / evening we also have our 10A, 2nds and 1st Rugby and Football Teams playing St Patrick’s College in some pre-season games. We wish all our boys every success this Saturday and look forward to witnessing some great games of St Peters Rugby and Football.

All boys involved please check with your coaches and respective coordinator for details pertaining to times, venues and transportation arrangements for this Saturdays games against St Patrick’s College.

AIC Cross Country – Our St Peters AIC Cross Country Squad is now certainly ramping up their focus and training as we now enter our final preparations leading into the AIC Championships on Wednesday 12 August. 

This Friday Mrs Schreiber and the St Peters Cross Country coaches will be conducting the final time trial before our St Peters AIC Cross Country Team is announced. We encourage all our runners to be present at this Friday’s time trial. We wish them every success with the final week of preparation.

AIC Track & Field – It’s been truly encouraging to have have so many students involved and attending our event training session this term for Track & Field.

This week with our Interhouse Track & Field Carnivals which were conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we were able to further unearth some great athletic talent at St Peters. This is even more promising for what St Peters can achieve at the 2020 AIC Track & Field Championships to be held in early October.

For both Track & Field and Cross Country we ask all students and parents to refer to the St Peters App for training times and locations of specific event group training.

The 2020 AIC Cross Country Championship will be conducted on Wednesday 12 August at Curlew Park, Shorncliffe.

The Robotics Parent Support Group is a group of parents/caregivers that proactively supports the St Peters Robotics program.  The group gets actively involved in Robotics fundraisers, competitions, events, College Open Day, etc, supporting our wonderful students and staff.  We meet once per term for our committee meetings and are actively involved with the Robotics program throughout the year.

Our Annual General Meeting (previously postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions) has been rescheduled for Tuesday 18 August.  This combined Term 3 Regular PSG Meeting and AGM will start at 7.00pm, on the Top Floor of the P&F Centre.  Further details below.

The Annual General Meeting (including Term 3 Regular PSG Meeting) of the Robotics Parent Support Group is to be held in on Tuesday 18 August 2020 at 7.00pm on the Top Floor of the P&F Centre.
