Tomorrow we will celebrate the diverse multicultural nature of St Peters with our annual Parade of Nations. It is only one of three times that our entire community gathers together as one; the others being ANZAC Day and Founders Day. The theme this year is ‘Unity in Diversity’. St Peters is unique and special because we join from so many backgrounds, over 70 nationalities. Apart from our First Nations people, we are all immigrants, or descended from immigrants and our origins reflect many of the regions and cultures of the world.
Given our College’s origins (we were founded by the sons and daughters of German immigrants; people who left their place of birth in the hope of a better life, religious freedom and economic prosperity) and foundational beliefs (a Christian School where we strive to welcome others) it is not surprising that we have evolved into the community we are today. Our College community is richer and better for our diversity. St Peters is a success story of multiculturalism and diversity. People of all manner of cultures and backgrounds learn and work together, side by side. In fact, there is little doubt that our College’s experience of multiculturalism has strengthened St Peters and the educational experience for all who pass through our gates.
In celebrating our diversity, it is also important to remember and celebrate our Unity. In our diversity we are one; bound together by our shared values and ethos, the common language of St Peters so to speak. It is this common language that contributes to the success of St Peters. Today and into the future we must continue to embrace the diversity of backgrounds and cultures at our College by treating all with care, dignity and respect; whilst at the same time supporting and buying into the shared history, values, traditions and identity, the language of our great College.
May we as a Learning Community strive to grow in diversity and unity, we are one.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Sexting
As teens develop an interest in sex, technology and apps make sexting easy, and unfortunately, acceptable among today’s youth. However, many parents are shocked to learn that children as young as ten are sending naked pictures of themselves to friends and classmates via text and social media. This type of behaviour is seeping into primary school playgrounds causing irreversible damage to young minds.
Sending this type of content is problematic for a child of any age, but over the years there has been a staggering increase of pre-teens using mobile phones to share sexual images and videos. Not only is this type of behaviour detrimental to a young person’s moral and ethical wellbeing, it also has legal implications placing them at risk of a criminal record.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn how to approach the subject of sexting with their children, as well as offer helpful strategies on dealing with the fallout should their child send or receive content containing sexual imagery.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Who is God and who are you?
Have you ever wondered who God is? Did you ever reflect on who you are? Strange enough these two questions are inextricably linked.
How we visualise God and which role we ascribe to him, impacts our lives. It also impacts how we feel about ourselves, how we respond to God and how we relate to others. It is also true that the way other people relate to us informs our self image. What others think of us impacts our own understanding of who and what we are. It can build us or break us, make us confident and strong or fearful and resentful and enable us to embrace life or hate it.
Sometimes and I am sure many of you can relate to this, people describe you in a way that seems contradictory to how you perceive yourself. It can be confusing. How do we figure out who we are? How do we know who God truly is?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an acclaimed Lutheran Theologian, active in the resistance against Hitler and part in one of the major plots to assassinate him, wrote a poem while in prison confinement a couple of days before he was executed:
‘Who am I? They often tell me I would step from my cell's confinement calmly, cheerfully, firmly, like a squire from his country-house.
Who am I? They often tell me I would talk to my warden freely and friendly and clearly, as though it were mine to command.
Who am I? They also tell me I would bear the days of misfortune equably, smilingly, proudly, like one accustomed to win.
Am I then really all that which other men tell of, or am I only what I know of myself, restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage, struggling for breath, as though hands were compressing my throat, yearning for colours, for flowers, for the voices of birds, thirsting for words of kindness, for neighbourliness, trembling with anger at despotisms and petty humiliation, tossing in expectation of great events, powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance, weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making, faint and ready to say farewell to it all.
Who am I? This or the other? Am I one person today, and tomorrow another? Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others, and before myself a contemptibly woebegone weakling? Or is something within me still like a beaten army, fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved?
Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine.
Whoever I am, Thou knowest, O God, I am thine.”
This reflects what Psalm 139 depicts in a beautiful image: “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully wonderfully made.” It beautifully describes who God is: the one who called us into life and made us unique, the one who breathed his breath into us. It is through him that we are, the Psalm declares. Trusting that you are because God longed for you to be and therefore gave you life, empowers you to be confident as the one you are. You do not need to let yourself be defined by what others say about you or how they relate to you. You are free to live as the beloved son or daughter of your maker.
Be yourself. Nobody is better qualified!
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
Be yourself, because God made you “you” and granted you to this world!

Year 12 QCAA Mock Exam Block
The QCAA Mock exam block will be held next week from Friday 18 August through to Thursday 31 August. Students are to prepare for these exams as they would for the External Exams in Term 4, without the pressure of results. The weeks following the Mock exams, where the consolidation of learning and rich feedback occur in classes can help maximise the student’s improvement as they lead into their External Exams next term. An exam schedule, equipment lists and AARA provisions have been published to the students and can be found on Firefly HERE. Students are to prioritise these exams and not make appointments during the school day.
Wishing both the QCAA and IB Year 12 students all the best in the Mock Exam preparation.

Primary Years News
Multicultural Week
The Primary Years community continues to embrace the IB Learner Profile to foster an international mindset. Events such as our Multicultural Week brilliantly mirror our College's ethos as a vibrant tapestry woven from a myriad of cultures, perspectives and languages.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have actively participated in the diverse range of activities that have unfolded throughout this week in the Primary Years. These collective efforts are a testament to the essence of St Peters, a College that resonates as a genuine global community.
A special commendation is due to Maggie Jin, our Primary Years Parent Liaise Partner, and the dedicated cohort of parents who have generously volunteered to orchestrate these activities.
This vibrant celebration of multiculturalism and unity not only cements a sense of belonging among our students but also actively contributes to our overarching mission of nurturing future citizens who are ready to navigate and contribute positively to our interconnected world.
Year 6 - Where we are in Place and Time
Last Friday, the Year 6 students presented their Museum of Migration as a culmination of their recent inquiry into the impact of migration on society. A combination of English, History, Digital Technologies and German, this unit encouraged students to develop their understanding of diversity and community. During the unit, they learnt about the various ways that Australia has experienced migration throughout our history and the impact it has had on our communities. They also inquired into the experiences of migrants and looked at the perspective of those arriving in a new and foreign land.
Friday’s Museum of Migration was an opportunity for students to step into the shoes of a fictional migrant character as the vehicle for sharing what they had learnt. The students modelled these characters on what they had discovered, sometimes from their own family experience. Listening to students talk to the guests about the perspective of others and hearing their empathy and understanding of the migrants’ circumstances was heartwarming indeed.
This unit is an important precursor to our upcoming PYP Exhibition. It allows students to develop their own line of inquiry to demonstrate their depth of knowledge and understanding of the central idea and share this more broadly with the learning community. The event sets high expectations for the upcoming Exhibition, which is always a highlight of the Year 6s final year.
Author Visits
Students in the Primary Years have continued to enjoy visits from prominent authors in our community. Earlier this week, our Year 3 students spent time with Dr Sarah Pye. After discussing the science of rainforests, the children created their own terrariums.
Thanks to our Primary Years Library staff; Megan Daley, Christina Wheeler, Louise Andrews and Ana Malta for their continued enthusiasm and support of the Literacy program at St Peters.
Junior High
Junior High Literature Event
On Monday 24 July as part of the Junior High Literature Event, author Taryn Bashford talked to our Year 7 students about the importance of reading and gave many tips on creative writing. She was well organised and we had a lovely day. In the last session’s question time, the final question asked by a teacher was not to Taryn but to the students. What were they taking away from the presentation? It was wonderful that the students’ answers were many and varied.
Student feedback during the day included:
She was really good, and I learned so much.
I found it enjoyable as she provided helpful tips on writing stories.
Can she come back, so we can do some writing sessions with her?
Last Monday, 7 August, Charlie Thomson, hip-hop rapper, author and Shakespeare enthusiast had our Years 8 and 9 cohorts enthralled. Held in the new Centre for Learning and Innovation’s Amphitheatre, our Year 8s saw a different portrayal of A Midsummer Night’s Dream character Puck. This tied in with their novel study of The King of Shadows. Year 9s enjoyed their sessions which had a focus on Romeo and Juliet, studied by our Year 9 Enrichment classes. Charlie gave wonderfully informative and dynamic hip-hop sessions based on Shakespeare and the students gained a new way of viewing and understanding Shakespeare!

Free Parent Webinar Series
Technology: We can't live with it. We can't live without it.
Let's admit it, technology is now part of our lives and it's not going anywhere.
Unfortunately for your child, a large portion of their time spent on technology will be unproductive, in private, on their phone.
As we all know, distractions can impact school performance and there's no greater distractions than technology and social media.
That's why Elevate will be running a free webinar on Technology & Focus next Wednesday, August 16th at 6:30pm (AEST) where we will discuss:
Technology addiction and how to reduce technology dependence
Practical strategies and apps to minimise procrastination
How to help your child use technology productively to enhance their learning

All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters track top and track pants are to be worn.
Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) is to be worn at any time.
All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.

Last Friday I enjoyed watching the Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship which is hosted by Moreton Bay College. It was a big day for our team with the bus departing St Peters bright and early and the day finishing with a wonderful celebration at the end of season breakup. Congratulations to all our girls who did us proud and performed amazingly well receiving many top three places, special mention to our Year 7 Freehand group, Nodoka K, Lilja J and Sasha W who placed first and won the Freehand pennant in the first year we have seen this category. The girls looked stunning in our St Peters leotards with amazing new balls and hoops thanks to a P&F Community Grant. Thank you to our coaches who were led by our amazing Head Coach Vanja and special thanks to Mrs Nicole Maynard who did an incredible job coordinating Rhythmic Gymnastics again this season.

Vicki Wilson Final Series
Last Friday and Saturday saw 23 of our amazing Netballers venture to Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Final Series. St Peters fielded both a Senior Team in the Cup division and a combined Years 7 - 9 Team in the Shield division and what a few days it was! Each division consisted of 20 teams including a First Nations Team. Teams were placed into pools to fight it out on day one for positions for the Final Rounds Playoffs on day two.
To participate, St Peters qualified both teams in the preliminary rounds earlier in the year to represent the Met West Region at the Final Series. This was no easy task; 15 teams in each division were vying for two spots to go through to the Final Series weekend. There is a total of 12 regions, each with 15 teams competing for the opportunity to play at the outstanding venue Nissan Arena and to challenge themselves against the best Netball schools in the state.
Our Senior team finished in fourth position overall after a tough game going down to Downlands in the bronze medal match. Our girls, Ella M, Mia H, Tia M, Aldora T, Leilani F, Issy P, Amelia R, Alice H, Georgia M, Charlotta E, Makayla C and Ainsley T performed very well over the two days and played a high standard of Netball, it was great to watch!
Our Junior team, Romi V-B, Willow P, Julia S, Ada M, Alexis T, Eliana E, Amayah L, Elyse R, Emily R, Prisha P and Issy Y (injured) finished in seventh place defeating Marymount College in the seventh/eighth playoff. What a great job these girls did over the two days, the improvement was exciting to watch.
Special thanks to our coaches Tracey and Patti, their teaching of the game of Netball was outstanding. To watch the girls embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level was great to see. We are so grateful to have Trace and Patti leading our Netball Program.
To our wonderful parents, thank you as always for your support, it was a great few days for St Peters Netball!
Senior Volleyball Schools Cup
For the first time, our Open Girls team played in the Open Honours division at the Queensland Senior Schools Cup. It was three days of high-quality Volleyball against the best teams in the state. We started the tournament a little inconsistent but as the tournament continued the girls showed great fighting spirit to improve in each match. We ended up in the five-eight playoffs on Sunday. The girls were determined to play a controlled yet aggressive game and never give up on any point. With this strong and positive mentality, we managed to defeat Kelvin Grove 2-1 who we had lost to on Saturday. We then defeated Aldridge 2-1 to finish in fifth place. It was an excellent tournament and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole team.
Winter Fixtures - Netball, Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis
Round 4 was another great round of sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed the challenge of taking on Somerville House and did amazingly well.
Special mention to our Open Hockey team who defeated Somerville House in what was an outstanding performance.
Round 5 this Saturday we take on Brisbane Girls Grammar School at our Home venues, we are looking forward to the challenge with all teams getting the opportunity to play.
This Saturday is the first Winter Fixture Sports ‘Focus Round’. We look forward to our students led by our 2023 College and Sport captains continuing to build on the amazing spirit of our Netball girls. Students must either wear their playing uniform or formal uniform.
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - you must communicate if unable to attend a training session or a game, early communication particularly for a game is very important.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions are not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.

A great morning was enjoyed by all at the new Somerville House Home venue SomerFields, our girls and their coaches displayed great sportsmanship and competitiveness on and off the court. We had six wins for the morning and two very close losses, and we were excited to see the 7C team with three development players filling in get the win. As the season progresses it is great to see the development and improvement of the girls as well as their willingness to learn and get better. Well done Girls! - Written by Coach Carynne (filling in as Game Day Manager)
Senior C2 travel to St Hilda’s
Senior C2 had a well deserved win after the long trip down to Southport. They played with great synergy in moving the ball swiftly from one end of the court to the other and held their nerve and responded after a five minute section in the third quarter where they were put under increasing pressure. Special mention to Willow for filling in who played superbly in her first ever game of Netball. - Written by Coach Ben

Last Friday saw our QGSSSA tennis teams travel by bus to SomerFields sporting precinct. Congratulations to our Junior teams, especially to the girls who played up a division due to players being away. These girls showed true resilience and we came away with wins in the Junior A and Junior B divisions. Being one player down in our Junior C team, they came so close! Unfortunately, our Senior teams with many players away due to sickness and injury could not match the strong Somerville House team.

Round 5 Draw v Brisbane Girls Grammar School: Saturday 12 August – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
It was an enormously successful day at the Wyaralong Dam last Saturday in so many ways. We hosted the Regatta which was a huge amount of work and effort for the Rowing PSG and our rowing community. That effort was rewarded with more than $20,000.00 being raised which will go towards improving the equipment and experience our rowers have access to across the Girls' and Boys' Rowing programs. It was wonderful to see many of the Boys shed attend as volunteers holding boats at the 2000m start for the Eights and Senior Four races and selling raffle tickets like hot potatoes. Our rowing mums in pink tutu’s directed traffic, sold countless pairs of silly socks and made even the most steadfast sweet tooths happy at the bake sale table. The dads towed trailers, set up tents and catering and flipped burgers with the best of them. A heartfelt thank you from me and every rower in the program. Our leaders Shaun Nodwell, Head of Sport and Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College were also present to cheer the girls on, we are very appreciative of their time and support.
While our community hosted like champs, our girls raced like them. Our 1st VIII achieved fourth place in the Open Eight+ race. Our best result in this boat since 2016. Our scullers Robyn M (Year 12), Jess M (Year 11), Poppy Y (Year 10) and Yoyo W (Year 9) all had podium finishes, it was our Year 8 Sculler Sibella H’s first race and she was fourth.
Impressively, our Senior Four+ that has struggled with injuries all year, made a magnificent entrance competing in their first race of the season and winning by clear water from St Hilda’s. Congratulations to Bella B, Charli S, Bridget D, Eva H and cox Esther L for maintaining the faith when even the most optimistic of us was running out of options. Your tenacity and that of Coach Maddy W were rewarded in spades.
We have work to do over the remaining three weeks of the season to get our quad boat speeds up to reach their potential. After several weeks of illness disrupting our Junior shed, our girls are now working hard to transform their exceptional individual performances into fast crew boat performances. The countdown is on the Head of the River on Saturday 26 August.
