This week I signed over 400 Academic Personal Best or Academic Improvement Awards for Semester 1 in the Senior School alone. I personally sign each of the certificates because it reflects the value that I and the College place on students striving to achieve their very best in all they do, but most particularly in their learning.
The College’s motto, Plus Ultra (Ever Higher), reminds our students to pursue their personal bests daily in all that they do – be it in the classroom, on the stage or on the sports field. This focus on achieving personal bests is very much in keeping with what those Old Scholars and former Staff who have gone before us were focused on. Mr Bill Lohe, the College’s second Headmaster, in a letter he wrote in 1978, eight years after his retirement stated that, "the idea (Plus Ultra) is as I see it not to make the other person the measure of one’s achievement, rather the individual is called upon to rise above themselves - the motto places no limit on rightful aspiration and endeavour."
Achieving a personal best is not easy. It should be challenging. It should take us out of our comfort zone. To attain a personal best requires hard work – nothing worthwhile in life is ever achieved without hard work. It also requires commitment – seeing things through to the end. And personal bests also require persistence – keeping going even in the face of setbacks or difficulties.
Congratulations to all our young people who achieved their academic personal best last semester. With Term 3 in full swing I encourage all of our students to work hard to achieve their personal best in all that they do…..and I look forward to the day that I have the privilege of signing an Academic Personal Best Certificate for each and every St Peters student.

"Jesus said to his disciples; 'You are the salt of the earth'." Matthew 5:13
Can I tell you a secret? The food I would have eaten too many times to remember in my life, the food that I have a weakness for is…salty hot potato chips.
I’m pretty sure this salted spud addiction began in my childhood. I remember in my childhood and youth going to agricultural shows in my little country town near Toowoomba and you would buy salty hot potato chips from a bus or van called Shannons. And you know what I would put on the salty chips? Vinegar, no tomato sauce, gravy or chicken salt. They were the original salt and vinegar chips. Jesus said to his disciples in this well-known passage called the Sermon on the Mount, You are the salt of the earth.
In Biblical times, salt was very important. People did not have refrigerators or ice, so salt was very important to preserve food. People would preserve their vegetables with salt. They would preserve fish for the wintertime by salting it and drying it out. When babies were born, they would wash the new babies in salt water for medicinal purposes. Salt would help preserve life. Salt was also important in Biblical times because of war. In ancient warfare with arrows and spears and swords, there was a lot of cutting and slashing during battle. So if you were a soldier with a wound from a spear or a sword, chances are you’d rub salt into the wound to help heal it.
It’s with these stories of how salt was used that we get to this passage’s meaning for us today. Jesus is telling his disciples how to live out their lives authentically in the world. He invites us to grow and mature in this thing called discipleship, to be the people he has created us to be in the world, at school, in our families, and in our circle of friends. Jesus said, You are the salt of the earth.
Fast-forward, 1,500 years from the time of Jesus to Martin Luther. In 1532 Martin Luther was talking to a heap of people in church about these words of Jesus. He said that the purpose of salt is to do three things; to preserve, to bite and to season and add tastiness to life.
1. The purpose of salt is to preserve the quality of life.
Jesus said, You are to be the preservative of our world. You are to preserve life in all its fulness. You are to help make society a better place. To help preserve the values of care, dignity and respect. Love, forgiveness and grace. To treat each person in the world with equality and justice and mercy as we are all created by God.
2. Luther’s second purpose of salt is to bite.
Like the ancients, we are to rub salt into people’s wounds. Doesn’t sound that nice, does it? What Luther means here is that we are, to be honest, and real in life and move beyond the surface niceties of wanting people to like us. In those trusted relationships, especially with friends, we need honesty with each other, the love that tells us when we are wrong, when we might need to change. There are times in life when we need to listen to the advice of a trusted person and be wise enough to act on it when it is needed and change our behaviour. We need people around us who are willing to rub salt into our wounds and press us for genuine change in our lives.
3. The third purpose of salt is to bring seasoning and tastiness to life.
One of our roles on earth is to bring flavour to life. If you are a person who is forgiving and shows kindness. If you are a person who brings generosity to those who are hurting. If you are that kind of person, there is a flavour that you bring to others. Whatever positive character strength you have you can bring that to others in a flavoursome way that adds connection, purpose and joy. Consider that for a moment, what is the flavour that you bring to school, to your family, to your friends?
And finally, Jesus said, you are the salt of the earth. May God’s Spirit encourage you as you live out your saltiness today. Amen.

Towards the end of last semester STEM Ambassador, Sophie C, was successful in her application for QUT’s STEM Internship Program. Her outstanding STEM leadership potential was recognised and as a result Sophie will have the opportunity to attend the Future You STEM Summit later this year.
Congratulations on Sophie’s successful application I know she will be a credit to this distinguished program.
Year 8 Science students participated in a STEM challenge that involved with the coding of a Sphero to navigate around a model of the digestive system or building a robotic hand that could use sign language to communicate their team names. Students had one week to build and test their prototype before presenting to their class. Each student recorded their progress in a detailed logbook describing the problems and challenges they had and how they were overcome.
On Wednesday 3 August, a group of Year 8 Science students participated in a cheese making workshops. In groups students made either a white Camembert or Blue cheese. Over the course of the day students separated the curd and whey, ladled the curd into hoops then soaked the hoops in brine. The following day students prepared their cheeses for maturing by storing them in controlled temperature refrigeration. On maturing, students wrapped their cheeses and samples and were taken to the RNA to compete in the school cheese making competition. Let’s hope we come home with a winner.
People who are PRINCIPLED have a sense of fairness and are honest with themselves and with others. They understand that sometimes there are rules, and they follow them. They have an understanding of moral reasoning. Students who are principled do the right thing…even when no one is watching!
How can parents help to develop students who are Principled at home?
I encourage you as parents to be on the ‘look out’ for these PRINCIPLED behaviours in your home, name them and talk about them. Drop into both Primary Years Administrations if you feel as though you would like to access our ‘principled’ cards for use in your home.
My thanks and gratitude go to the teachers and leaders who took our Year 3 cohort away on their first St Peters Camp last week. This activity is, for many students, their first time away from home and for many, it was a time of personal challenge. The warm, but tired smiles that greeted me on return is a testament to the relationships and care these staff have for our Year 3 students and their families.

Our Year 6 Student Leaders are seeking donations of new or ‘near new’ books to contribute to the Lismore Flood Recovery project. If you have any books in excellent condition that you are willing to donate, please drop off to the Upper Primary Reception by the end of Term 3. We are particularly seeking good quality picture books, novels for junior, middle, and young adult readers and non-fiction books suitable for children.
Many thanks

How fantastic it was to be able to experience the greatness of the Commonwealth Games over the past few weeks. I have nothing but praise and admiration for all our Australian athletes who competed in Birmingham and represented their country with such pride, passion and sportsmanship.
Last weekend we completed Round 3 of AIC Basketball and Tennis and I must especially commend our St Peters Year 8 Tennis players for their manners, conduct, sportsmanship, and overall attitude. It was wonderful to receive several positive reports on how your Year 8 boys conducted themselves. This is great to hear and what we encourage every student at St Peters to aspire to be like.
This weekend, we do not have any AIC fixtures due to the Brisbane Exhibition week and we will resume with Round 4 of AIC Basketball and Tennis the following weekend (Saturday 20 August).
St Peters are working hard now in preparation for the AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in Term 4, Week 1. It is great to see good numbers of boys participating in training for Track & Field. We strongly encourage all Years 7 to 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the Track & Field training sessions that they can. Being involved and participating in events which encapsulate running, jumping, and throwing can only benefit their overall sporting prowess and skill development.
Being part of the St Peters Track & Field Squad in 2022 will also assist in developing, fostering and establishing greater bonds with their peers whilst growing our college’s spirit and culture.
An important reminder to all students about our College’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
St Peters Track & Field training is now underway, and we are already experiencing really good participation numbers at weekly training. Similar to last year, we are really excited for the 2022 AIC Track & Field season, and we are sure it will not disappoint.
Our 2022 AIC Lead Up Meets for Track & Field are on the following days, please mark these dates off in your calendar:

It is not joy that makes us GRATEFUL, it is gratitude that make us JOYFUL.
Congratulations to Mollie O and Ella R in Year 12 who recently represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. This is an outstanding achievement by two dedicated and talented students who have excelled on the world stage. Their achievements are built on many hours of hard work in the pool over many years.
Ella competed in the 200m Individual Medley qualifying for the final. This is an outstanding achievement for someone in only her second international meet for Australia and backs up her performance at the World Championships last month where she made the semi-final of the 200m Individual Medley. Well done Ella!
Mollie had an outstanding Commonwealth Games bringing home five Gold Medals and two Silver Medals in the following events:
Mollie’s performances see her come away as one of the most decorated athletes from the Commonwealth Games. She now has eight Gold medals, five Silver medals and two World Records from her last two international meets. We acknowledge Ella and Mollie’s Coach, Dean Boxall, for the many hours of coaching and leadership he has given to St Peters Swimming.
Congratulations to Toby S in Year 11 and Laylani Va’ai (Old Scholar, 2021) who last week represented Australia at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Cali, Columbia. This was a phenomenal achievement for both girls to make this team and a wonderful experience in their journey as an athlete.
Toby went into the competition as one of the lower ranked high jumpers in the field. She jumped exceptionally well in the preliminary round to make the final where she placed 8th overall in the world! This is a sensational performance by Toby who cleared a best jump of 1.80m. We look forward to seeing Toby represent St Peters at the upcoming QGSSSA Track and Field Championships at the end of this term.
Well done also to Laylani who represented Australia is Discus. Laylani finished 23rd overall in her competition with a best throw of 45.23m. This is Laylani’s first international meet and will only get better moving forward after this experience. Well done to both Toby and Laylani!!
Last Friday I enjoyed watching the Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship which is hosted by Moreton Bay College. It was a big day for our Rhythmic Gym team with the bus departing St Peters bright and early and the day finished with a wonderful celebration of the season at the end of season breakup. Congratulations to all our girls who did us proud and performed amazingly well in our new stunning leotards, proudly provided by the P&F Community Grants Program. Thank you to our coaches who were led by our amazing Head Coach, Phoebe, and special thanks to Mrs Nicole Maynard who did an incredible job coordinating Rhythmic Gymnastics again this season.
Congratulations to the 2022 Awards winners…

Last Saturday and Sunday saw 22 of our amazing Netballers venture to Nissan Arena for the Vicki Wilson Netball Queensland State Championships. St Peters fielded both a Senior Team in the Cup division and a combined Years 7-9 Team in the Shield division and what a few days it was! Each division consisted of 20 teams including a First Nations Team and teams are placed into pools to fight it out on day one for positions for the Final Rounds Playoffs on day two.
To participate, St Peters qualified both teams in the preliminary rounds earlier in the year to represent the Met West Region at the State Championships. This was no easy task; 15 teams in each division were vying for two spots to go through to the Final Series weekend. There is a total of 12 regions, each with 15 teams competing for the opportunity to play at the outstanding venue Nissan Arena and to challenge themselves again the best Netball schools in the state.
Our Senior team finished in eleventh position. Our girls, Ella Mac, Sian Z, Sophie T, Aldora T, Leilani F, Annie I, Makayla C and led by captains Renee C, Milly T & Mia B-W gave their all over the two days and played a high standard of Netball, it was good to watch!
Our Junior team, Amelia R, Romi VB, Grace D, Willow P, Ainsley T, Julia S, Charlotta E, Elliotte C, Emily R, Maddie P, Prisha P & Aiyana P finished in ninth place. What a great job these girls did over the two days, the improvement was exciting to see. They were unlucky not to qualify for the 1-8 playoff, missing out on percentage but coming together to finish day two with three wins.
Special thanks to our coaches Tracey & Patti, their teaching of the game of Netball was outstanding. To watch the girls embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level was great to see. We are so grateful to have Trace & Patti leading our Netball Program.
To our wonderful parents, thank you for your support, it was a great few days for St Peters Netball!
Congratulations to our Open Team who last weekend played in the Year 12 Division 1 competition at the Senior Volleyball Schools Cup. The girls went through the 3-day tournament undefeated, defeating teams from Gladstone, Caloundra, Sheldon, All Hallows, Canterbury College and Kings College. Across all six matches, the girls did not lose a set although there were a couple of tight ones! They came away with the gold medal and the MVP of the tournament was awarded to Maisie P. Well done girls.
Round 4 was another great round of Sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Hockey, Netball & Volleyball teams enjoyed the challenge of taking on Brisbane Girls Grammar School and did amazingly well.
Special mention to our Open Hockey team who defeated BGGS for the first time in many years!
Round 5 this Saturday we take on Somerville House at our home venues, we are looking forward to the challenge.
‘FOCUS ROUND’ is this week for our TENNIS & VOLLEYBALL girls, we look forward to our students lead by our 2022 College & Sport Captains continuing to build on the amazing spirit. Students must either wear their playing uniform or formal uniform.
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
