National Science Week
"To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in Science" Albert Einstein
This week is National Science Week. National Science Week is all about celebrating science and technology in Australia. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in. The theme for the week is ‘Destination Moon: more missions, more science’ – fittingly reflecting that this year marks 50 years since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first walked on the surface of the moon. This theme is a way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions (STEM).
Here at the College we have celebrated this theme and peaked student interest through rocket competitions, robotics workshops and chemistry shows. You can see many of these activities on the College’s Facebook page. Excitingly at the end of this year, the College is for the first time taking part in a NASA Space Camp where over 30 of our students will have the opportunity of a lifetime to experience and learn more about the final frontier of space. The NASA Space Camp has grown out of the Science Extension Program that the College has introduced over the last couple of years in Junior High. At St Peters, we value students learning science because as a discipline it teaches them how to think critically, weigh up ideas, generate new ideas, solve problems and make informed decisions. These skills are integral to every aspect of a student’s education and life, from school to career.

St Peters Youth Church
St Peters Youth Church meets every week Friday or Saturday afternoon in the Ministry Centre.
Science Week has been rocketing on. Students have been using Oreos to demonstrate the phases of the moon, exploring the science of food, playing with robots and mini-spheros and had a short chemistry show. The finale on Friday is the stomp rocket competition.
Do you have an old working smart phone sitting in your drawer not being used? Please consider donating it to the Science Department. Science has recently purchased a number of technology based teaching aides. We have class sets of virtual reality glasses and mini-sphero and your old unwanted phones and chargers would maximise the use of the teaching tools. Unwanted phones may be handed to your Science teacher. Many thanks.
RoboCup State Championships
St Peters Robotics entered teams into the RoboCup State Championships over the weekend, held at the University of Queensland. This was a huge event with over 500 students from around the state competing in various challenges. Our St Peters teams were up against some strong competition, but they all rose to the challenge.
Special mention to Lucia B and Ting J (Year 6) for making it into the finals for their creative OnStage performance, out of 37 teams. Congratulations also to Brandon B, Thomas C, Adam D, Andrew D, and Gerald Y (Year 7) for placing 4th in the Standard Soccer division. There were a few nail-biting matches which made for a fantastic spectacle.
Robotics is all about problem-solving and putting coding and construction skills into action.

ICAS English and Mathematics Competitions 2019
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are tests which document individual student, cohort and school academic performance and progress over time in areas such as English and Mathematics. ICAS is the largest independent assessment program for schools in the world with more than two million entries annually.
This year we are again offering students in Years 7-12 the opportunity to participate in the ICAS English and Mathematics competitions. Each competition entry costs $14.50 per student. Students who achieve highly in these subjects are strongly encouraged to participate. Students who elect to sit these competitions will do so before school, at 7:40am, on the competition day. The testing will extend into period one.
Dates for the competitions are as follows:
English: Tuesday 10 September
Mathematics: Thursday 12 September

Moody Children
As children grow older they may be prone to being moody. Recently, the Upper Primary students engaged in the ‘Let’s Chat’ lessons about changing bodies and growing up. There were some interesting discussions around moods.
We, as teachers and educators, often refer to Michael Grose and his website about parenting ideas – because it is so good! I would encourage you to take the time to have a browse as there are some really interesting articles. (www.parentingideas.com.au)
In an article titled This is the worst day ever! Michael Grose gives some valuable suggestions about how to deal with pessimism. It is important for children to be able to debrief with a trusted adult, but it is okay to have a time-limit on pessimistic talk. Children need to know they are being listened to. It can help for parents to identify their child’s feelings and help them to understand and put their feelings into perspective. Adults can also balance this with a less exaggerated view of the situation.
Children can catastrophise situations and feelings. In the You Can Do It program teachers and parents are encouraged to use a ‘catastrophe scale’ of 1 (being not too bad at all) to 10 (being the worse-case scenario) to help children realise that their current situation or feeling may not be as bad as they first thought. This is an important skill in self-regulation. The ‘catastrophe scale’ is used within the Primary Years regularly with great success.
Finally, Michael Grose says to encourage kids to show gratitude! It is easy for us, as busy parents and teachers, to forget to do this. Let’s try to be a good example to our own children and students - and show gratitude.

Junior High News
eSmart Week
Last week was eSmart week at St Peters. The goal of eSmart Week was to engage the community (students, parents and staff) in a variety of activities to remind everyone to be positive, safe and balanced users of digital technologies.
Students completed the Technology and Wellbeing Survey during Form Class. The results of this anonymous survey will be discussed with students and relayed to parents through upcoming Parent Support meetings. A number of other fun activities were held during the week including Tell us your Story, Tech Check and Be Deadly Online.
Junior High also welcomed Katrina Blowers, senior reporter and presenter for Seven News Queensland, who presented a social media workshop ‘This Social Life’ on Wednesday afternoon to one hundred Junior High students. The workshop was designed to empower students to use social media in a way their future selves will be proud of. They learnt how to craft a considered digital footprint; how to juggle social media with school; how to handle trolls and navigate the mental health pitfalls of ‘comparisonitis’ and ‘oversharing’ as well as the five-step-through process that should be applied to every post. The overwhelming message was that the digital footprint of today’s students will be the number one influencer of their future story.
RoboCup Information
Congratulations to our students who competed at the RoboCup States at UQ over the weekend. Students represented St Peters in the Soccer, On Stage and Rescue competitions. It was impressive to see how they have improved, programmed and built much more complex robots this year. Our Soccer Team FAFA was successful in making to the semi-finals. Please congratulate Andrew, Adam, Brandon and Gerald. Well done to everyone who competed.
Girls Skirt Length
It appears that some girls are folding their skirts to achieve a shorter length. I would remind all students and parents that as outlined in the Junior High 2019 Handbook all dresses (pre-2018 uniform) and skirts must be no higher than the base of the knee. In order to avoid the embarrassment of being spoken to by a member of staff about their skirt length, girls need to ensure they wear them only at the required length.
Father's Day celebration
To celebrate Father’s Day you are invited to join your Junior High student at the annual Junior High Father’s Day Breakfast on Wednesday, 28 August from 6:45am – 7:45am. Enjoy Bacon and Egg rolls $4.00, Sausage on Bread $2, a Yoghurt Cup $3 - or buy a coffee from the onsite Coffee Van.
For catering purposes, breakfast will need to be ordered and paid for prior to Thursday 22 August. To register your attendance please click on the link below and proceed to ordering your breakfast.

Magnifique! – Madame Flute – A Tour de Force!
Last week we were blessed with a visit from Madame Flute herself – Ms Jane Rutter. Jane Rutter is one of the world’s finest flautists and exponents of the French flute method and has made a career bringing her unique interpretations of French classical music to the masses.
Jane arrived on Friday and presented a Masterclass to all St Peters Flautists and worked intensively with Catriona R, Tahlia P and Nanditha K to assist them with developing their stage presence and performance technique. Thank you to our flute tutors Ms Farmer & Ms Cottrell for their preparation with these students. Later that afternoon, Jane conducted workshops with Concert Band 1, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds, honing a solo item with each ensemble. This was a delightful afternoon, where Jane shared her immense talent, skill and musical generosity with the students.
On Saturday night, the three College bands performed a series of French inspired pieces and a solo feature from Ms Rutter before Jane presented her one-woman show 'Madame Flute'. The show highlighted her amazing skill with performances of La Vie en Rose, Habanera de Carmen, I Love Paris and a rendition of Galop le CanCan complete with dancing. Jane wowed the audience with her incredible musical skill along with memories and stories of her amazing career, spanning the globe across Australia and France.
A huge thank you to our French curriculum staff and students for providing ushers and comperes. This certainly added an authentic French atmosphere to the evening that was complimented with Champagne, Pain au Chocolat, Chocolat Chaud, Macarons and other French delicacies. Many thanks also to the amazing Music Staff, Events Staff and MSG parents who tirelessly support the St Peters Music Program and these Signature Series events.

Girls Sport
Rhythmic Gymnastics
Coordinator: Mrs Phoebe Anderson
Well done to all the girls who competed in the 2019 QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics competition last Friday. All girls represented the College with pride and their 13 weeks of consistent training, perfecting their challenging routines was on display.
A special mention must also go to our Year 12 girls, who as a group have been so heavily involved in Rhythmic Gymnastics over the years. Your presence will be missed next year but hopefully you have inspired our younger girls to follow in your footsteps.
A final thanks to our coordinator, Mrs Phoebe Anderson, for her passionate leadership and all our coaching staff. Special thank you also to our Girls Sports Coordinator, Mrs. Rodman, who did an enormous amount of organisational logistics behind the scenes and headed out to support the girls on the day.
Rowing
Coordinator: Mr Peter Hicks
Last week, due to the high winds and dangerous conditions, the Rowing Regatta was cancelled. It was fantastic to see the camaraderie and energy at the ergo training on Tuesday afternoon and we look forward to seeing the girls on the water this Saturday.
Winter Fixtures
As we approach the middle of the season it is extremely important that attendance to training and games remains high and any absence is communicated early with both coach and coordinator. So far the 2019 season has demonstrated a good team camaraderie and this needs to continue for the second part of the season. It is no coincidence that those teams who have consistent attendance to training and games are the teams showing the greatest improvement.
Individual fitness is also an important facet of these team sports. Girls are encouraged to keep up their general fitness in addition to their specific training sessions as being fit greatly assists skill execution during games. Cross training with swimming, running or using the gym are all effective ways to continue to strive for individual personal bests in team sports. General fitness also assists the individual complimenting good study habits, forcing effective time management and establishing good habits for life.
Round 5 sees our fixtures head out to Morton Bay College. A reminder that Hockey is played at the UQ turf fields near the UQ Aquatic Centre and Tennis is at Churchie for this week. All draw times and venues can be found on the St Peters App.
Hockey
Coordinator: Mr Cameron Glass
Last week we travelled to Windsor Park, Albion, to take on St Margaret’s. They only had Junior and Opens teams so our Seniors could have a well-deserved sleep in. Both games were played on grass, and considering we have trained only on turf for the past two years we did remarkably well. The Junior game was a super tight affair, eventually going down 4-2. The game was quite congested in the middle of the field so it will be a continued goal to spread the ball wide and utilise the speed of Ella-Jaye. Opens took a bit of time to adjust to the grass but once we scored our first goal, it allowed the team to settle into a rhythm and we continued to dominate the game. At the full time whistle the score was 6-1. Big well done to Lara T for her first ever hat-trick of goals. Congratulations also to the strikers (Sacha, Georgie and Ava) who had brilliant games.
Netball
Coordinator: Mrs Anne-Marie Champion
Round 4 v St Margaret’s in the wind was challenging yet very rewarding. In a sign of respect, both St Margaret’s and our Opens team wore black arm band in honour of Tracey Bruce's Dad, it was a great reminder of how Sport can unite us all. With eight wins and a draw, our Opens team had to fight hard to come away with the win, our 10A team have their first win of the season, our 8B team fought back from seven down to win by one. Our 9A team after a slow start managed to get the draw, our 7A, 7B, 8A, 9B, 10B teams all enjoyed comfortable wins. Well done Girls.
This year thanks to Tracey, Marty Stolberg and Jeremy Lohe the Springfield girls have been attending their Skills Training session at the Springfield campus every Tuesday morning. It has been a big success and the girls and parents appreciate training at school and a morning off catching the bus.
Venue: Moreton Bay College Courts & Gym – 450 Wondall Road, Manly West.
All teams playing MBC will play at MBC at either their courts (C on map) or their Gym (G on map). Our Senior A2 team will play Brisbane Girls Grammar School at Ambiwerra at 10.00am and our 8C team have a bye. Girls this week our coaches will be looking for the player with the ‘BEST VISION’, thanks again Tracey for organising these awards.
Please Note: Girls please arrive a minimum of 30 mins prior to start time to allow plenty of time to find your team and commence warm up. Please also ensure your nails are cut, all jewellery is removed and you wear your full SPLC Netball uniform, this includes SPLC bike pants.
Please watch for further details re our Round 6 fixture v St Hilda’s down the Gold Coast. A bus will be provided for those girls that require transport so keep an eye out for an email from our Girls Sport Coordinators with sign on details for the bus.
The following teams are scheduled to play down the coast – Opens, Senior A1, Senior B v Somerville House (we are trying to get this game moved to Brisbane), 10B, 9B, 8B, 7A, 7B & 7C.
Tennis
Coordinator: Mrs Deborah Wilson
Round 5 against MBC will be played at the Churchie tennis courts. Girls and parents are reminded to check the St Peters App for all details and venue times.
Volleyball
Coordinator: Mr Joshua Singh
This week, we were up against St Margaret's, MBC and Somerville House. Great to see once again our teams doing so well. Congratulations to the 7A, 8A, 10A, Senior A and Opens who all recorded wins against St Margaret's. The 7B, 8B, 9A, 9B, 10B, Snr B1 all had byes. This weekend presents a tough round against MBC away at their venue. The following girls have made the Team of the Week:
Team of the week:
Audrey L (10)
Hailey G (11)
Ophelia T (8)
Bella (11)
Charlotte CP (7)
Claudia L (Opens)
Annika S (10)
A special mention goes to Annika who had her best attacking game so far, Kianga B who has played an excellent game for the third week in a row. Claudia L (Opens) who passed and defended really well and Hailey G who put her focus at training with free balls into game play and took control of the back court.
Senior Schools Cup: The 10As and Opens went away for three days last week for the Senior Schools Cup. What a delight it was to watch these young ladies perform at a big stage and walk away knowing they have beaten schools who train all year for this tournament. Congratulations goes to the Opens girls who came fourth overall in their Year 12 Division One competition and for the Year 10s who stepped up and played in a Year 11 Division One competition.
Track & Field
Coordinator: Mr Shaun Nodwell
Well done to the many girls who attended last Friday’s first Track & Field Meet for 2019. The results from this meet so early in the season are very pleasing and show increased depth in our squads in recent years. To be considered for the 2019 QGSSSA Track & Field team girls must be attending at least one training session a week (preferably more) and Friday night meet.
This Friday 16 August, we witness a Swedish relay which is a mix of distances ranging from 100 to 400metres. Signups for the bus have been sent in our girls sports email.
Badminton
Coordinator: Jeni Gagen
The 2019 Badminton season is almost underway and girls who have signed up met on Thursday lunch time to gather further information about the season.
To be involved in Badminton girls must be available to play on their competition day. If they are unavailable on these days then they are unable to participate in 2019. All information will be distributed to the girls who have signed up and trials will be underway shortly.
Junior Softball (Years 7 - 9)
Coordinator: Girls Sport Coordinators

Sunday 8 September
Girls trialling are required to attend all sessions and if this is not possible please let Mrs Pavlides (waterpolo@stpeters.qld.edu.au) and coaches know as soon as possible. A minimum of two session is essential to be placed in the correct team.
As soon as session times are confirmed for the trials all girls who have signed on will be emailed and the schedule will be placed on the St Peters App. We are hoping this will be by the end of the week.
We hope you have a great week in sport,
Kelli Rodman and Kerry Schreiber
Boys Sport
There is a direct correlation between attendance at training and results, so keep this in mind as you have an obligation to be at training. There are many boys (and families), who are moving heaven and earth to fulfil their commitments to trainings and games, and then there are a few who unfortunately are missing sessions because of reasons such as 'sleeping in' or are simply hoping that no one will notice that they aren’t there. Please make sure that we are all getting to our trainings and games and if we cannot make a commitment, our boys are communicating with their coach and coordinators early to avoid confusion.
Round 3 of AIC Basketball was played last weekend against Padua College which, certainly provided some memorable results for many of our teams. Nine wins in total were recorded overall including our currently undefeated 5A team and also 7D, 8A, 8B, 8C, 8E, 10A, Thirds and Seconds. The 10A, Seconds and Thirds matches all came down to the final possessions with our boys showing tremendous poise under pressure to walk off the court victorious to the roar of a very supportive home crowd. These results are a credit to all of our players and coaches who have committed to preparing themselves each week and setting high standards. If this work continues there is no doubt that our boys Basketball program here at St Peters will continue to grow and improve further with even more positive results. Special mention to our dedicated coaching mentors who have provided our AIC coaches with valuable guidance both during training sessions and matches.
This week is a full BYE week for all AIC teams including Basketball, with no matches being played. Team training sessions however continue as usual with the exception of Years 5 and 6 teams who will be training on Friday afternoon (16/8) from 3:30pm AND Wednesday morning training sessions are cancelled due to the public holiday this week. Round 4 of competition continues on the weekend beginning 23 August vs Villanova College.
Tennis
Coordinator – Mr Stuart Delaney s.delaney@stpeters.qld.edu.au
At the being of the season the first games that we circled was that against Padua. We knew we would have a tough round on our hands, particularly in the older age groups. The day lived up to all expectations and for the first time in many years the 1st IV were challenged with the games all square and St Peters winning on games for and against - four matches all, six sets all and St Peters winning 63 games to 49. It was great to see the top two players in our association; Zack L (St Peters) and Casey Maguire (Padua), battle it out over the weekend.
As all the games being so closes, this is were a team attitude comes to forefront. Tight games to both Zack and Jordy were superseded by fantastic wins to Matt and Michael. Congratulations to the team for a gritty win.
There were many other tight games on the day including the 7As and 5Bs who won five sets to three and 29 games to 27 respectfully.
All teams must be congratulated with all levels and teams winning form Year 5 to the Opens.
Well done to all students who have been regularly attending our school Track & Field trainings throughout the week. It is great to see many of our athletes having additional training outside of these trainings as well to add extra hours to their preparation. Our numbers at training are looking good, however, I would like to see more attending. Remember, if you have represented the College in the past at the AIC Championships; if you performed well at the inter-house carnival; if you have been identified by Sports House or HPE staff; if you ran in the AIC Cross Country Championships or; if you are interested in training with a view to make the AIC team – you are strongly encouraged to attend training!
Training for the 2020 AIC Volleyball season as well as the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, will begin in Term 4 – Week 1. Details to come very soon!
In the interim, the Queensland Academy of Sport will be running a Volleyball camp during the September Holidays at Craigslea State High School specifically aimed at 6-13 year old boys and girls. At this camp, talent identification will also be done and kids will be given an opportunity to become a part of the Junior Volleyball Development Program that the QAS have been very successful in running in previous years – many of our current Australian Representatives have been a part of this program.
