Mock Exams and Australian Indigenous Education Partnership
Year 12 IB and QCAA ‘Mock Exams’
The next couple of weeks are an important time for our Year 12 students with those undertaking the IB Diploma or the QCAA ATAR courses sitting their ‘Mock Exams’. The ‘mocks’ or trial exams aim to replicate the conditions, processes and procedures of the final external exams to be held in October and November of this year, and so provide our students with important experiences, learning and insights as they prepare for their final external exams in Term 4. Whilst I’m not a mathematician, when it comes to realising academic potential my favourite equation is ‘success = 99% perspiration + 1% inspiration’. I encourage all our young people to prepare thoroughly, practise diligently and persevere greatly.
I’m sure that you will join me in wishing all our Year 12 students every blessing as they undertake their ‘mocks’ over the next few weeks.
Australian Indigenous Education Partnership
Early this week in Sydney I had the privilege of attending the graduation ceremony for Year 12 Indigenous students who attend an Australian boarding school as part of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) Scholarship Program. The AIEF was established in 2008. By bringing government and private enterprise together the AIEF enables young Indigenous Australians to receive a quality education in some of the best boarding schools in this country. As well as our relationship with the AIEF, the College has partnerships with the Cape York Institute and the Northern Territory Government. Our relationship with all three organisations is vitally important in that they enable indigenous young people to experience the opportunities of quality education. These partnerships are great success stories, and it is always affirming to hear the stories of our Indigenous Old Scholars and the way they are contributing not only to their communities but also to broader Australian society.
I was certainly a very proud Head of College as I watched our AIEF Scholarship students receive their graduation certificates knowing that St Peters had played an important part in their life trajectories. At the same time, I am conscious that there is still much to do in our country to address many of the issues First Nations people face. Jason Clare MP, the Federal Minister for Education who spoke at the AIEF graduation, quoted a statistic that a young Indigenous man in this country is more likely to spend time in jail than attend university. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people still have a lower life expectancy, higher rates of infant mortality and higher rates of disease such as diabetes when compared to other Australians. Education plays a critical part in addressing some of the issues faced by Indigenous Australians. Boarding Schools like St Peters are making a difference, but there is still much to do.

In this edition of SchoolTV - Bullying
Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social. It can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying in any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long term effects on those involved, including bystanders.
Despite the efforts made to reduce bullying behaviours, the research tells us that one in four students still report being bullied every few weeks. However, not all negative behaviour should be considered bullying. The key difference is that bullying does not stop on its own. It’s important young people learn how to identify behaviours that are rude, behaviours that are mean and behaviours that are related to bullying.
Often the reasons for bullying can be complex. Some young people do it to get approval from others, some do it to regain control, whilst others may do it because it makes them feel safe. Supporting young people as they work through their emotions will help them unpack the motivation and reason behind the behaviour.
In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers can better understand why some young people engage in bullying behaviours and what to do to support a child experiencing it.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Primary Years News
Do you have a bucket of LEGO gathering dust in the garage? Have your children outgrown all the LEGO they used to love when they were younger? The Primary Years will happily take any donations of LEGO that you are willing to donate to the College. Just drop it into either Lower or Upper Primary Administration and it will be put to good use.
Year 3 Camp
My thanks and gratitude go to the teachers and leaders who took our Year 3 cohort away on their first St Peters Camp last week. This activity is, for many students, their first time away from home and for some, it was a time of personal challenge. The warm, but tired smiles that greeted me on return are a testament to the relationships and care these staff have for our Year 3 students and their families.
Book Week 2023
Since 1945, The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has celebrated Book Week in educational institutions, bookstores and libraries across Australia. The theme for CBCA Book Week 2023 is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’.
To celebrate Children’s Book Week, the Primary Years will again hold its annual Book Week Dress Up and Giving Day. This will take place on Thursday 24 August. We ask Primary Years students to select a book character they love and dress as that character or come in their pyjamas (in support of the Pyjama Foundation). We encourage inexpensive, homemade costumes.
We ask students to donate money to The Pyjama Foundation on this day, either by bringing cash to school or by donating directly online using this link. The Pyjama Foundation gives children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with reading and learning, life skills and confidence. Mrs Daley is a proud ambassador for The Pyjama Foundation and you can read more about the Foundation here.
Multicultural Week
In celebration of our vibrant and diverse community, Multicultural Week in the Primary Years has been nothing short of a resounding success, immersing our students in a rich tapestry of global traditions and experiences. Our Primary Years are incredibly multicultural, with students boasting family backgrounds from a plethora of countries around the globe. This week, they embarked on a heartwarming journey through a variety of lunchtime workshops designed to foster appreciation and understanding of different cultures.
They were transported to the rhythmic heart of Persia, introduced to the intricate and delicate strokes of Chinese calligraphy, and found their voices in a vibrant Chinese Song Singing Workshop. The Cultural Colouring-In Workshops unfolded like a painter's dream, highlighting the artistry of ethnic and traditional designs. Italian, Portuguese, Chinese and Vietnamese Language Workshops transformed the halls into a hub of linguistic exploration, resonating with the joyful sounds of new phrases and laughter. Our dedicated senior IB students, St Peters alumni, committed parents and esteemed college staff united as inspirational workshop facilitators. This week has beautifully mirrored our core message: 'may we be one'. Despite speaking different languages and hailing from diverse cultures, this sentiment has been the golden thread woven through every activity. As we reflect on this week, we see more than just the colours, sounds and movements of diverse cultures; we witness the beautiful harmony that arises when our community comes together to celebrate and learn from one another. In this unity, we are reminded of the power of 'one'—one community, one love and one shared experience of enriching multicultural education.

Signature Series Concert featuring Monica Trapaga
On Friday 4 August, St Peters was proud to present a Signature Series Concert - An Evening with Monica Trapaga. Many may remember Monica from her time as a host on the ABC’s Playschool but beyond that she is also a fabulous jazz singer, entertainer and educator.
Monica spent the day working with Cantique, Saints & Singers and Senior Stage Band. Each workshop was tailored towards polishing their ensemble performance for the evening and preparing a special item featuring Monica that they would perform on the night. Our own Bronte J also performed a duet of ‘S Wonderful as well as swinging renditions of Straighten Up and Fly Right and the Ella Fitzgerald classic Cheek to Cheek.
After the first act was presented by St Peters Choirs and Senior Stage Band, our musicians were then able to join the audience to hear and be inspired by, the performances of Monica and her all-star band. With Monica at the helm, the group took the audience on a musical journey through her time performing. Monica’s storytelling between items included fascinating and entertaining anecdotes from years of travelling, performing and living an incredibly colourful life.
The workshops and concert were an incredible success and a fabulous night of swinging jazz.

St Peters Masterclass Series | Friday 18 August | Piano and Double Bass
Students at St Peters are fortunate to have the opportunity this term to take part in music masterclasses held in the PAC on Friday afternoons 3:30pm – 5:30pm. These masterclasses are open lessons in which an expert musician works with a number of selected students in front of an audience. The intention is to provide a learning experience for the performers and audience members. Those in the audience benefit and learn from watching the performances and hearing the suggestions given to the performers by the expert teacher.
On Friday 18 August, we will welcome:
Dr Liam Viney, Head of the School of Music at the University of Queensland to lead a Piano Masterclass in the Auditorium.
Phoebe Russell from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra to lead a Double Bass Masterclass in the Orchestra Room.
All students and members of the St Peters community are invited to be part of the audience for these masterclasses.

Boys Sport
Last weekend we completed Round 4 of AIC Basketball and Tennis and I must especially commend our St Peters Tennis players for their manners, conduct, sportsmanship and overall attitude. It was wonderful to receive several positive reports on how our Tennis players conducted themselves. This is great to hear and what we encourage every student at St Peters to aspire to be like.
This weekend, we do not have any AIC fixtures due to the Brisbane Exhibition week and we will resume with Round 5 of AIC Basketball and Tennis the following weekend (Saturday 26 August).
St Peters is working hard now in preparation for the AIC Track & Field Championships which will be held in Week 1 of Term 4. It is great to see good numbers of boys participating in training for Track & Field. We strongly encourage all Years 7 - 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the Track & Field training sessions that they can. Being involved and participating in events that encapsulate running, jumping and throwing can only benefit their overall sporting prowess and skill development.
Being part of the St Peters Track & Field Squad in 2023 will also assist in developing, fostering and establishing greater bonds with their peers whilst growing our College’s spirit and culture.
Dress Standards at AIC Sporting Fixtures
An important reminder to all students about our College’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters Track Top and Track Pants are to be worn.
Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) is to be worn at any time.
All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in the sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.
St Peters Track & Field Lead Up Meets
St Peters Track & Field training is now underway, and we are already experiencing really good participation numbers at weekly training. Similar to last year, we are really excited for the 2023 AIC Track & Field season, and we are sure it will not disappoint.
Our 2023 AIC Lead Up Meets for Track & Field are on the following days, please mark these dates off in your calendar:
AIC T&F Lead up Meet 1 – Thursday 24 August at SAF, Nathan (4:00pm to 7:30pm)

Commonwealth Youth Games
Congratulations to St Peters Springfield Year 12 student Toby S who has won the Gold Medal in High Jump clearing 1.78m on her second attempt at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad.
Incredible effort Toby, well done, we are super proud of you. We wish Toby all the best as she continues to train hard to qualify for the World Junior Championships.
Equestrian
Year 7 students Jessica B, Annika D B and Jemma H recently represented St Peters at the Somerville House hosted Show Jumping event. The girls had a great day with some personal bests and showed great team spirit. Jessica B who had recently competed at the Southeast Queensland Regional Championship and finished with some great results rode for the first time on her new horse. Jemma H stepped up to the challenge of a new height and Annika D B competed for the first time in an Interschool Queensland Show Jumping competition. We are very excited to have Jess, Annika and Jemma representing St Peters at Equestrian.
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Round 5 saw all our teams play against Brisbane Girls Grammar School, this is never an easy assignment. The day finished with mixed results, but our girls certainly gave their all representing our College.
Special mention to our Open Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams who enjoyed great wins and our Open Tennis who have been hindered by injury and illness did their best against quality opposition.
Round 6 this Saturday we take on St Aidan’s at their home venues, this is another great challenge, and we are looking forward to it!
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - Communicate if unable to attend a training session or a game, early communication particularly for a game is very important.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor, and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions are not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.
Date Claimers:
Round 6: Saturday 19 August v St Aidan’s Anglican Girls' School (Away) Round 7: Saturday 26 August v Brisbane State High School (Home) Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s School (Home)
Round 5 of the competition focused on Netball as we welcomed Brisbane Girls Grammer to St Peters. To ensure the spotlight centred on the sport, the Opens, Senior A and 8A teams played their games in the Indoor Gym whilst the other games were played on the familiar Harts Road Courts.
As to be expected, the competition on Harts Road Courts was tough. Although the 7A team put up a good fight early, the opposition proved too strong. There was no lack of determination shown by the 7B, 7C and 8B teams, but a fighting spirit alone was not enough to secure a victory in Round 1. Although the result was a little closer in the gym, the 8A team went down by four.
Round 2 started on a positive note, with the Opens team playing their best Netball of the season. A dominant performance across all four quarters resulted in an impressive and well-deserved win. The 9A team started strong and continued to build on their performance to also post a big win. The 9B, 9C and 8C teams were all involved in close, fiercely contested games, but unfortunately, BGGS proved too strong and gradually pulled away to win all three games.
In the final round, the Senior A girls played some great Netball and dominated the opposition to post a big win. The Senior B team did not have it all their own way and were involved in hard fought tussle before pulling away to secure the win. The Senior C1 team were not so fortunate but went down fighting. Tough hard-fought games seemed to be the nature of the day and the 10A encounter was no different. Although they went into the second half with a narrow lead, BGGS proved too strong in the last quarter and earned the win. The 10B1 team were able to capitalise on a good half time lead and post a comfortable win to finish off the round.
Round 5 also saw our 10B2 and Senior C2 teams travel to Windsor Park to take on St Margaret’s. The 10B1 team played with only six players due to injury and illness, but never gave up. Coaches Carynne and Chloe gave them goals that they achieved. The Senior C2 team may not have secured the victory but they played with spirit and Coach Ben said they played out the game in the heat. We are super proud of these girls that represent St Peters in the St Aidan’s draw each week.
Although we suffered more losses today than wins, the girls are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves. The determination, tenacity and fighting spirit showed, even in defeat.
Congratulations to our Round 5 Award Winners, the girls who produced an ‘out of the world performance!’

Round 6 Draw v St Aidan’s: Saturday 19 August – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
Congratulations and well done on two great games against BGGS. Not too long ago we used to get beaten easily by BGGS so to come away with a victory and a narrow loss is a great achievement.
This week we play St Aidan’s at their home ground Ambiwerra. The fields are on grass, which will be a foreign surface for most of the girls, the biggest difference will be the speed of the game and the need to hit the ball rather than push it when wanting it to travel more than ten metres.
Round 6 Draw v St Aidan’s: Saturday 19 August – Please CLICK HERE for the draw
It was an enormously successful day at the Wyaralong Dam on Saturday 5 August in so many ways. We hosted the Regatta which was a huge amount of work and effort for the Rowing PSG and our rowing community. That effort was rewarded with more than $20,000.00 being raised which will go towards improving the equipment and experience our rowers have access to across the Girls' and Boys' Rowing programs. It was wonderful to see many of the Boys shed attend as volunteers holding boats at the 2000m start for the Eights and Senior Four races and selling raffle tickets like hot potatoes. Our rowing mums in pink tutu’s directed traffic, sold countless pairs of silly socks and made even the most steadfast sweet tooths happy at the bake sale table. The dads towed trailers, set up tents and catering and flipped burgers with the best of them. A heartfelt thank you from me and every rower in the program. Our leaders Shaun Nodwell, Head of Sport and Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College were also present to cheer the girls on, we are very appreciative of their time and support.
While our community hosted like champs, our girls raced like them. Our 1st VIII achieved fourth place in the Open Eight+ race. Our best result in this boat since 2016. Our scullers Robyn M (Year 12), Jess M (Year 11), Poppy Y (Year 10) and Yoyo W (Year 9) all had podium finishes, it was our Year 8 Sculler Sibella H’s first race and she was fourth.
Impressively, our Senior Four+ that has struggled with injuries all year, made a magnificent entrance competing in their first race of the season and winning by clear water from St Hilda’s. Congratulations to Bella B, Charli S, Bridget D, Eva H and cox Esther L for maintaining the faith when even the most optimistic of us was running out of options. Your tenacity and that of Coach Maddy W were rewarded in spades.
We have work to do over the remaining weeks of the season to get our quad boat speeds up to reach their potential. After several weeks of illness disrupting our Junior shed, our girls are now working hard to transform their exceptional individual performances into fast crew boat performances. The countdown is on the Head of the River on Saturday 26 August.
Once again, it was great to see so many girls out attending the second QGSSSA Track & Field Meet last Friday. With the QGSSSA Track & Field Championships four weeks away, it is essential that girls are both attending training and competing at the meets in the lead up. Please check the St Peters app for training times and the Track & Field calendar. We look forward to seeing all girls attend the meet at UQ this Friday night. Girls are reminded to check their emails from Mr Lohe to sign up. Go Saints!
