I’m not a great gardener. It’s not for lack of trying. It’s more a lack of consistency. I like the idea of growing my own vegetables, but invariably my inability to attend to the daily watering of the plants required during the summertime thwarts my best intentions. If I had to grow my own food to survive, I’d probably starve.
So, I am very grateful for the people in our world who do grow food for me – our farmers. Our primary producers have a vocation to feed the world. In some ways there could hardly be a higher calling than this.
Farming is a challenging enterprise. In my garden I face setbacks from the winter frost, summer sun and hungry chickens when they get out. There is also the wolfhound who likes to lie on a bed of cool freshly watered herbs. But our farmers face constant challenges of bad weather, of good weather at bad times, of fires, floods, storms, rodents, labour shortages, fluctuating prices and trying trade conditions such as inexplicable tariffs from certain export partners. There are long days of hard physical work. There is disappointment when a crop is spoiled or damaged before harvest. There is the burden of responsibility that comes with maintaining a family tradition. There is the isolation of long hours spent alone and often great distances to others. It takes great faith to be a farmer. Yet the passion of our primary producers means they persevere even under dire circumstances.
God is a farmer at heart. God is the creator of all things, and this includes the work of ongoing creation:
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts. - Psalm 104:14-15
It’s interesting that the last line says bread sustains hearts, not bodies. God’s creative work nourishes our bodies, but also is sustains our hearts. Having food to eat means more to us than just fuel for our bodies.
We depend on God for our food. When we grow food in gardens and on farms, we participate in the creative work of God! Martin Luther taught that God is at work in our world in a hidden way – he wears masks a lot of the time. One of those masks is of a farmer. We might see the face of a farmer, but behind this mask God is at work, producing food to feed the world.
This week we remember the work our farmers do for us. Our Community Focus Day at Springfield is a way for us to give thanks for our farmers and to offer a small token of our appreciation.
This week, before you eat, why not pause to remember our farmers? Give thanks for the hands that have produced your food, and for the earth that has grown it. And give thanks to God for the way he is at work through our farmers.

Langer Library CBCA Book Week 2022
The Langer Library’s CBCA Book Week 2022 celebrations have commenced. From 8-26 August (and maybe a bit longer) we will celebrate 2021’s Australian published books. Our 'dreaming' display based on this year’s slogan 'Dreaming with eyes open' is up and floating. Hold the dream theme and view this year’s shortlisted and notable books. These include some lovely novels written by authors who have visited the Langer Library in previous years. They include authors - Pip Harry, Karen Foxlee, Roseanne Hawke, Jackie French, Wendy Orr, Steven Herrick, and Morris Gleitzman. Which title will win – we will have to wait for the August announcement?
While we wait – we are celebrating with many lunchtime activities – come and take part in our Scavenger Hunt; the Book Week Mystery Title Competition, our Book Lotto, Book Week Crosswords, Book Word Hunts, our online Digital Escape Game, our TV Quizzes and more…
eSports | Girls in Gaming
We are creating an eSports team of interested girls from Years 7–11 for absolute beginners (like myself!) to girls who game but are keen to learn more skills and have fun in an informal and non-judgemental space.
We will start by meeting on Tuesday lunches, starting out with Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch but will also give other team PC games a try (such as Rocket League and League of Legends).
We have the opportunity to attend a Girls in Gaming invitational on 3 September at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School.
Note: We do have mixed teams for the major leagues and for Mario Kart, for students from Years 5–12. If you are interested in playing, please get in touch.
We were delighted to welcome parents into the Primary Years, recently hosting several Open Classroom activities across Prep – Year 6.
These learning and sharing events are a wonderful opportunity for our parents to see learning in action and to assist them in their understanding to further support their child.
Our Year 6 students recently shared their Museum of Migration with parents and friends. This culminating task in their ‘Where we are in Place and Time’ Unit of Inquiry tasked each student to create a ‘migrant character’ and share this story via an online platform. I am grateful both for the time the Year 6 cohort (both staff and students) gave in sharing these stories and for those parents who came into Upper Primary as Pedagogical Partners, sharing in the Year 6 Teaching and Learning Program.
The Prep Centre also opened its doors last week and invited Prep parents and friends into the playground to share in activities connected to their ‘How the World Works’ Unit of Inquiry. Donning gardening gloves, trowels and hats, many hands certainly did make light work as our Prep community prodded and preened the garden and its surrounds. We were even lucky enough to have our Prep Scarecrow repaired and renovated!
Staff in the Primary Years are currently engaging with several initiatives linked to the College’s Strategic Intent Plus Ultra 2025, one of which encourages the continued development of our parent community as pedagogical partners, it reads: To engage parents in their child’s learning and wellbeing through an active process of consultation, collaboration, and education.
I am very grateful for the openness of our Primary Years teams as they provide such an opportunity to our community.
A reminder that the College has a subscription to Justin Coulson’s Happy Families website and this week Justin suggests three steps to getting the results you want in your home:
1. Do one thing at a time. Stop dividing your attention. You will be more efficient. (I know it’s unfair to say that to parents with kids, but you’ll be amazed how much you can do if you move in this direction).
2. Do it now. Once you are clear on the one thing that needs doing now, get on it. Fast. Action is what makes things happen. Your bias has to be towards momentum.
3. Do it right. Just because you are moving forward doesn’t mean it’s about being hasty or careless. Stay with it until it is how it should be.
Bonus tips:
Your device/screen will usually be an impediment. Make it disappear as much as you can.
Reduce the intensity and just 'be' now and then. It will make life smoother and more enjoyable when it ramps up again. We do not always have to be 'on'.
If you have not yet signed up to Justin’s website, you can do so by following the link here.

2021 Year 12 Next Step Survey
The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Years 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2021, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.
Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2022.
Contempo featured the final IA3 works for Visual art and FTV and New Media to an enthusiastic audience. The event provided an opportunity for students to present ideas about relevant, contemporary issues that are important culturally through the media of their choice. Congratulations to the students for the professional manner into which they presented their works and the College.
Thank you to Maia who exhibited an artwork, screened her film and generously played the harp for the exhibition. Lovely to observe the development of a multi-Arts student. Special thanks to Ms Dobrenov and Mr Higgins for teaching the students in Years 11&12, and Ms Cornelissen for assisting with the exhibition and event.
Well done everyone!
