St Peters rightfully enjoys an outstanding reputation for Music within our own and broader community. Under the leadership of our Directors of Cocurricular Music – Christine Taylor, David Deacon and Grantley Sutch, St Peters can rightfully claim to offer a Music Program among the very best in this nation. Music has always been important at St Peters. Martin Luther said that music was second in importance only to the word of God.
It is one of the deepest forms of creativity and one of those places where flesh and spirit, thought and emotion come together in a most vivid way. There are times when attending Music Concerts in our Performing Arts Centre when I close my eyes and it feels like one of the great concert halls of Europe such is the quality of music. It is easy to forget that our musicians are still so young.
The Performer of the Year Soloist Final last week was yet another example of our amazing Music Program. The eight finalists were selected from a ‘blind audition’ by external judges from nearly 60 applications – all of the highest standard. It was a special night of music. The diversity of performances reflect the strength of our music program. Congratulations to all involved. All members of our community are always welcome to attend the many music concerts on offer at St Peters.

In this edition of SchoolTV – Mindfulness
Over the last decade, mindfulness has been slowly rising in popularity with many individuals practising it on a regular basis. Evidence based research has found that there are many benefits to mindfulness which has prompted schools across the nation to implement this practice into their daily routines.
Mindfulness can be described as attention training for your brain, enabling you to focus on something without judgement and to stimulate curiosity. Mindfulness can be practised in a number of ways and is something that can be done by everyone - no matter what your age! It has been practised by many cultures around the world, but it is not exclusively affiliated to any particular philosophy or religion.
Mindfulness helps improve memory, engagement and performance. Its positive effect on the brain can improve immunity, mental wellbeing, learning ability, emotional health and even time management. It is especially important in this era of information overload as our attention is constantly being pulled in many directions making us more distracted.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn the best way to introduce this mindfulness to their children, implementing it into their daily lives to have an overall positive impact on family relationships.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Why Lament
Out of the depths, I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. Psalm 130:1
Tragedy rocks a community. Lives are lost, people suffer and pain and grief are experienced. How are we to respond in such situations? Often we don’t know what to do or how to respond when we are faced with great tragedy in our social circles. Words seem barely feasible in such situations. How do we react in a meaningful, compassionate way to those suffering? In a trusted relationship, we can hug the person affected. If we are people of action we can help in practical ways as well as maybe donate money. We can write a note or put into writing our condolences. But how do we as a community connect with those who suffer great tragedy?
One answer to this question is to lament. We can at times like these, as a St Peters community, lament. And what exactly is a lament? Lament is an ancient ritual or genre of language that is lost in our Western culture. A dictionary definition of lament is to “express passionate grief or sorrow.” In our contemporary culture, we can find it hard to put into words our experiences of pain and suffering. Some of us would prefer to avoid, deny or suppress such emotional troubles. But a lament does not do that. A lament puts into words for us the pain and sorrow we cannot voice. And many cultures around the world have ritualised expressions of lament, including Indigenous cultures. The Hebrew culture of the Old Testament was accustomed to and used lament as well.
Over one-third of the Book of Psalms is a lament. The Old Testament prophets cry out to God and the whole book of Lamentation, expresses the confusion and suffering felt after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. People in the New Testament who were afflicted and sick cried out to Jesus for help. Jesus himself laments to God in the Garden of Gethsemane with the words of Psalm 22, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Lament voices to God the ‘why’, ‘how long’ and ‘where were you’ questions.
Lament does not hold back the suffering we experience. Rather, laments turn us toward God when sorrow tempts us to run from him. To lament to God is to pray our pain. To turn to God, bring our complaints, ask boldly for help and trust nonetheless that God is healing our broken world. As one pastor put it; “to cry is human, but to lament is Christian.”

Debating
Last week brought the end of our Debating teams’ participation in the 2023 QDU Secondary Schools competition. St Peters had another successful year in the competition, entering 15 teams from Years 7 – 12, with five of these teams, from Years 8 – 12, making it through to the finals.
Our four Year 7 teams debated across six evenings this year, hosted at St Peters, with some very interesting topics. This was a fantastic introduction to the skill of debating for many of these students.
Congratulations to our teams that made it through to the finals this year. These teams were the 8.2 team coached by Miss Chrisel Myburgh; the 10.1 team, coached by Old Scholar Harry Edwards and our 12.2 team, coached by Old Scholar Maggie Denk.
It was pleasing to see two of our teams making it through to further rounds of finals this year. This consisted of our 11.1 team with Lara N, Mijili P, Lara B, Dilumi P and Sankeerthi C, coached by Old Scholar Oliver Jayasinghe. This team debated the quarter final short prep topic 'that the environmental movement should prioritise messaging that emphasises the benefits of environmental protection to humans over the environment itself’ and did a stellar job against a tough opposition in the Churchie 11.1 team. A fantastic season by our 11.1 team where the students polished their debating skills and particularly improved on their delivery and success of their Points of Information. Well done girls and Oliver.
Last Friday evening our 12.1 team with Max M, Karina H, Lucy M and Isla M, coached by Mrs Sue Dobrenov, competed in the semi final against a very tough opponent from Gregory Terrace. The team narrowly lost this debate 2:1, however, showed tremendous skill and tenacity throughout the year, debating at a very high level. We are extremely proud of how far this team has come and wish them every success next year with their future endeavours.
We look forward to welcoming all our current Debating students, plus new students, to our Debating program next year.

Engineering Careers Talk
We had the pleasure of welcoming guest speakers Ged Da Silva, Camilla Ashfield and Maryam Memar from Bechtel Engineering to present to a Year 9 Technology class about the reality of what the broad field of Engineering entails. They provided their perspectives on various aspects of Engineering including Electrical, Civil and Chemical/Mechanical leading onto Managerial roles within the sector that require overseeing diverse projects as a leader. We were fortunate that each of the speakers had varied training and experience levels ranging from a recent Civil Engineering graduate to a more experienced Electrical engineer in the field.
Ged Da Silva, who is now retired, shared a little of his training, referring to the soft skills required to lead several Engineering Technical Teams to ensure a successful outcome. Given that the field of Engineering is still male dominated, it was beneficial for the students to hear from two successful females within the Engineering field. The speakers addressed some of the myths associated with this profession.
Within this session, Mrs Estevao also spoke about the benefits of starting to explore the work role options early. Students were encouraged to attend university Open and Experience days, talk to industry specialists about their roles and seek out opportunities to observe the day-to-day activities in areas of interest. The College offers numerous resources to assist students with their post-school exploration and Year 9s were encouraged to utilise these resources accessed via the Careers page on Firefly and by attending other in person seminars held within the Career Centre regularly. It is never too early to start exploring one’s work options. It takes regular engagement to increase one’s awareness of self, and thereafter select an option for the first step of one’s career journey which is non-linear.
Thank you to our informative guest speakers who provided an excellent learning opportunity for the Year 9’s and to Bechtel Engineering and Ged Da Silva for supporting this initiative.

Primary Years Camp
My thanks and gratitude go to the teachers and leaders who took our Year 3 cohort away on their first St Peters Camp last week. This activity is, for many students, their first time away from home and for many it was a time of personal challenge. The warm, but tired smiles that greeted me on return are a testament to the relationships and care these staff have for our Year 3 students and their families.
Similarly, our Year 5 students visited Noosa North Shore earlier this term. Disconnected from technology, students enjoyed the beaches, forest and wildlife that this unique camp offers.
Camps for Primary Years students offer numerous benefits that foster holistic development. These experiences promote teamwork, communication and social skills, helping our students build lasting friendships and continue to develop as well-rounded global citizens. Similarly, outdoor activities enhance physical health, encouraging active lifestyles while exposure to new environments cultivates curiosity and adaptability. Away from screens, students develop problem-solving skills and emotional resilience. Guided by our teachers and camp staff, they gain independence and self-confidence.
A huge thank you must go to the staff who organised and attended these camps with our students, often taking them away from their own children and families. I am always grateful for our passionate and committed Primary Years staff, and the important work they do with our students each day.
Book Week
Since 1945, The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has celebrated Book Week in educational institutions, bookstores and libraries across Australia. The theme for CBCA Book Week 2023 is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’.
To celebrate Children’s Book Week, the Primary Years will again hold its annual Book Week Dress Up and Giving Day. This will take place on Thursday 24 August. We ask Primary Years students to select a book character they love and dress as that character or come in their pyjamas (in support of the Pyjama Foundation). We encourage inexpensive, homemade costumes.
We ask students to donate money to The Pyjama Foundation on this day, either by bringing cash to school or by donating directly online HERE.
The Pyjama Foundation gives children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with reading and learning, life skills and confidence. Mrs Daley is a proud ambassador for The Pyjama Foundation and you can read more about the Pyjama Foundation HERE.
Early Arrival
We have noticed that some Lower Primary students arrive at the College before 8:00 am. As the official supervision commences at 8:00 am, we kindly request that students who arrive before this time (unless they are attending a supervised activity) make use of the Before School Care service. This ensures appropriate supervision and ensures their wellbeing until regular school hours commence.
We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and understanding in following these expectations. Our primary goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students, and your support is essential in achieving this. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Australasian Double Reed Competition
St Peters students represent at the Australasian Double Reed Competition.
The national competition for the Australasian Double Reed Society was held last weekend at Griffiths Conservatorium of Music. This event has participants coming from all over Australia. Two of our students, Eva B and Hunter C, were part of the event performing and enjoying what the Australasian Double Reed Society had to offer. Our fabulous bassoon teacher, Karen Ruprecht, said that she was "so proud of them for being involved’’. They displayed a lot of courage playing for people who were unfamiliar, and they worked hard playing as a soloist with piano for the first time. Thank you so much Karen for mentoring our students in such a positive way and a huge congratulations to Eva and Hunter for participating and representing St Peters.

Track & Field
The first of our AIC Track & Field Lead Up meets is on this week. Thursday night, 24 August, over 60 of our St Peters athletes will compete against 7 other AIC colleges both in track events and in field events. These Lead Up meets offer a great opportunity for our boys in Years 7 - 12 to compete across multiple events whilst also experiencing the great camaraderie amongst our AIC colleges.
The AIC Track & Field Championships will be held in Week 1 of Term 4. We strongly encourage all Years 7 - 12 boys to get involved and attend any of the Track & Field training sessions that they can as well as attending the AIC Lead Up Meets.
Participating in Track & Field events which encapsulate running, jumping and throwing can only benefit every student's overall sporting prowess and skill development. Being part of the St Peters Track & Field Squad in 2023 will also assist in developing, fostering and establishing greater bonds with their peers whilst growing our college’s spirit and culture.
Dress Standards at AIC Sporting Fixtures
An important reminder to all students about our college’s expectation surrounding correct dress standards at AIC fixture games for both players and student spectators:
All students playing Basketball and Tennis must be dressed in the correct playing attire (including socks). If the weather is cool, only the St Peters track top and track pants are to be worn.
Footwear – joggers are to be worn at all times by those students participating in AIC sport. No open footwear (eg. Slides or thongs etc) is to be worn at any time.
All student spectators are to be dressed in St Peters winter formal uniform. Students who have played earlier in the day can be dressed in sports uniform to support. Students attending AIC games who are not dressed in the correct St Peters attire will be asked to leave.

Winter Fixtures - Netball, Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis
Round 6 was a great round for our Netball, Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis Girls as they took on St Aidan’s. Some really pleasing results and our teams have progressed well as we head into the final weeks of the season.
Round 7 this Saturday we take on Brisbane State High School at our Home venues in what is one of the toughest challenges in QGSSSA Sport, and we are looking forward to it! Good luck to all our teams!
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - Communicate if unable to attend a training session or a game, early communication is particularly important for a game.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor, and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions is not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.
Date Claimers:
Round 7: Saturday 26 August v Brisbane State High School (Home) Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girl's Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s School (Home)
Round 6 saw St Peters travel to the Ambiwerra Sports Complex to take on St Aidan’s. With 5 courts in action, there was plenty of Netball on display and the girls certainly didn’t disappoint.
The morning started on an excellent note with all three Year 7 teams posting a win, a feat we haven’t seen to date this season. The 7A team are to be commended on their performance as they fought hard to overcome a half time deficit and post their first win of the season. The 8B team played well and came away with a strong win, however the 8A team was a little undermanned and went down but not without a fight.
The momentum continued into the second round with all five teams securing wins and completing a clean sweep. Although the 9A team did not have it all their own way, the 9B result was never in any doubt and the 9C team slowly pulled away from a determined opponent to ensure all the Year 9 teams were victorious. The 8C team was a very one-sided affair which saw them post the highest score and biggest winning margin of the day whilst the Senior A team continued to play impressive Netball and won comfortably yet again.
The Open team took to the court in the final round and perhaps surprised the opposition with their commitment and determination to grind out what was a comfortable win in the end. Although the Senior B team started slowly, some excellent defensive Netball kept their opponents scoreless for two quarters and secured them an impressive win. With only one goal in it leading into the final quarter, the 10A game was a close hard-fought contest. Unfortunately, the opposition proved too strong in the final stages, and they pulled away to inflict only our second loss of the day.
It was especially pleasing to see the hard work and effort finally pay off and St Peters comprehensively win the day.
Congratulations to our Round 6 Award Winners, the girls who played with the ‘Best Vision’ on court!

It is the Girls Shed’s biggest week of the season as we prepare to compete at the BSRA Head of the River at Wyaralong Dam on Saturday. The crews are completing their final water sessions over the next day or two making those last minute technical adjustments that can make the split-second difference between a podium finish and not.
We are extremely appreciative of the support and encouragement we are receiving from so many voices across our school community this week. Mr Kotzur attended training with the 1st VIII this morning and rode in the tinny alongside Coach James Doring. Mr Nodwell and Mrs Champion also attended breakfast with the rowers after their sessions early this morning.
All our crews have worked extremely hard since Week 1 of Term 2 preparing for Saturday’s regatta and I am extremely proud of the grit and tenacity I have watched them demonstrate week after week. Please join me in wishing the girls the best of luck this Saturday by donning your pink socks and ribbons around school this Friday. If you would like to attend the regatta, there are still seats available on the Supporters bus departing from the Indooroopilly campus bus stop at 5:15AM Saturday morning. #GoSaints

First XI vs Old Scholars Game
On Saturday, 19 August, St Peters First XIs faced our Old Scholars in an intense Football match. The game ended in a 3-all tie, ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, with the First XIs emerging as the winners and retaining the 2023 David Brown Cup. Congratulations to the First XI’s and thank you to both teams, for participating. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for our Old Scholars to reconnect with one another at the College and SPOSA really appreciates the time you all took to attend. Special thanks to the Sports House for coordinating the match. We can’t wait to see you all back again next year for another exciting game!
