Book Week has been celebrated since 1945, and is in its 77th year this year, the theme is ‘Dreaming With Eyes Open’.
‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’ means different things to different people. It can describe the thrill of escaping into another world when we read and inspire our students, and ourselves to dream big, to be curious, wonder and seek knowledge through reading. Reading helps us to be knowledgeable, principled, inquirers and the best thinkers we can be.
In Ephesians 1:18 Paul prays, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.”
Hope is such an important part of our Christian experience and this theme of dreaming with our eyes and our hearts being open, or enlightened, also brings with it the opportunity to provide hope for others and to explore the concept of hope in literature.
On the CBCA shortlist this year we see the concept of hope explored in books such as ‘Stellarphant’ who hopes to change the way organisations consider diversity in those they employ, ‘Just One Bee’ is entirely about hope and the courage to dream, and not only underpins the plight of the bee and climate change but clearly emphasises the necessity of working together for the greater good, ‘The Boy and the Elephant’ is a tender, wordless picture book about hope for the world we live in, and our ability to change it.
As a part of our Book Week celebrations this week, St Peters Primary Years is sharing hope and the joy of reading, through raising money to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
The ILF provides culturally relevant books to remote indigenous communities and supports Communities to create books in First Languages and St Peters Primary Years has been supporting the ILF for some years now.
Reading, and the opportunity to celebrate reading through Book Week, is such a privilege. Reading is dreaming with eyes open, and I hope that this week you are able to carve out some time for yourself to read and dream, and to perhaps share with the students you come in contact with this week what reading means to you, what reading have given you and your hope that all young people may have access to books and rich literature.
Let us pray.
Thank you for the gift of reading and the opportunity to celebrate this through Book Week. Thank you that we and our students have such ready access to books and the ability to dream with our eyes open through reading. We pray that our donation to the Indigenous Literary Foundation gives this same gift and hope to remote communities who need access not just to books, but to books in Language and to high quality literacy education. Amen

Last week, Year 5 spent three sensational days at Noosa North Shore, where they participated in a jam-packed itinerary that included team-building activities, bushcraft and survival skills, archery, mini golf, canoeing, bike riding, and a night hike. The students set some challenging personal goals which they achieved with encouragement from their teachers and peers. The teachers were most impressed by the students' overall behaviour and commitment to the tasks.
Students and teachers alike returned home exhausted but with a sense of achievement and some wonderful, shared experiences and memories to look back.
Words of Wisdom from Dr Justin Coulson, challenging us to think differently about parenting:
Novak Djokovic said in an interview with the Financial Times that "I can carry on playing at this level because I like hitting the tennis ball."
The interviewer replied in surprise: "Are there really players who don't like hitting the ball?"
Djokovic answered, "Oh yes. There are people out there who don't have the right motivation. You don't need to talk to them. I can see it. If you can find the thing you do for its own sake, the compulsive piece of your process, and dial that up and up, beyond the imaginary ceiling for that activity you may be creating, my experience is the world comes to you for that thing and you massively outperform the others who don't actually like hitting that particular ball. I think the rest of career advice is commentary on this essential truth."
This may be career advice, but it’s also great parenting advice.
Some parents have moments, hours - and even days - when they don’t like hitting balls (that is, they don’t like parenting). At all.
But if we can find the joy in parenting - if we can find the stuff we like about it - and dial that up beyond the imaginary ceiling we might be creating for being a parent, you’ll massively improve your performance. You’ll find it a delight. You’ll find your kids a delight. And you’ll get more out of it.
Djokovic still works hard. Tennis makes him sweat. He gets injured. It taxes him. Parenting will do the same to us.
But when we like it, we’re happy to pay the price. And the rewards are inestimable.
Students who are INQUIRERS are curious about the world.
They love learning and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them
throughout life.
How can parents help to develop students who are Inquirers at home?
I encourage you as parents to be on the ‘look out’ for these INQUIRING behaviours in your home, name them and talk about them. Drop into both Primary Years Administrations if you feel as though you would like to access our ‘inquirers’ card for use in your home.
My thanks and gratitude go to the teachers and leaders who took our Year 5 cohort away on their Year 5 Camp last week. This activity, for many students, is a time of personal challenge. The warm, but tired smiles that greeted us on return is a testament to the relationships and care these staff have for our Year 5 students and their families.

How much technology is too much for children? Can families ever find a balance in this new era of constant digital connectedness? Not-for-profit organisation, Small Things, supports families to navigate this era of digital overwhelm for parents, caregivers, and most importantly, children.
Small Things have offered to run a two (2) night workshop called Screen Sanity to St Peters Primary Years parents that raises awareness about healthy technology use. Small Things have run a number of pilot programs in schools putting over 200 parents through their program with amazing feedback.
Conducted on Wednesday 5 October and Thursday 13 October this exciting and informative workshop unpacks one of today’s trickiest subjects – screens. Topics will include how much technology is too much, first phone age as well as how to ensure your home is e-safe. This workshop will give you an opportunity to get your head around your family’s digital plan. Please attend both nights. The sessions will run from 6.00pm – 8.00pm and be held the P&F Centre.
Due to the nature of the program this workshop is limited to only 48 people. Depending on the success of this workshop further workshops may be offered.
Registrations open at 9.00am on Monday 29 August on Eventbrite.
