Changes to the assessment system
Most parents, especially those with children in the Senior School would be aware that the Years 11 and 12 Assessment system in Queensland has undergone its most dramatic change since the early 1970's, with the commencement of the new ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) system at the start of this year. The commencement of this new system followed the best part of four years of targeted planning across the state in preparation for its introduction. During this period, the College undertook a number of steps to ensure that both our teachers, and ultimately our students were well prepared for this new system including ensuring every single teacher who was going to teach in the new system attended professional development sessions run by the QCAA. In addition, a number of teachers were either directly involved in writing some of the new syllabuses or were involved in trialing external assessment items on behalf of the QCAA. To better prepare our students for the demands of the new assessment system some of the Year 10 assessment strategies were modified to more closely align with the new system.
Throughout this year the College has continued to build capacity in its teachers as we implement the new system with numbers of teachers undertaking training in specific roles in the new system such as that of Assessor and Endorser. In addition, teachers continue to build their shared understanding as to how to best prepare students for external assessments by drawing on the knowledge and expertise of colleagues in our College who have for the past decade been teaching the IB Diploma in Years 11 and 12, which has a strong foundation of external assessment.
The weekend just past saw teachers from around the state who have been trained and accredited as an Endorser meet for the first Endorsement process, and like every other school in Queensland we are keenly waiting on the feedback. The new ATAR system has meant considerably more work for our teachers, and I thank them for their unwaivering commitment and professionalism in preparing for and implementing it, always with the best interests of your child/ren in mind.

Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. (Psalm 33:2-3)
It was not just the harp that we heard on Saturday night at the Performer Of The Year Recital, where the audience was treated to high quality performances of fine music by several exceptional music students. This coming Saturday the Concerto continues this musical celebration of our community, and there is more to come.
Music in its various forms is an important part of our lives, and perhaps one of the things that sets humans apart from the rest of the animal world. It requires commitment, dedication, persistence and effort to be able to perform music well, and it can bring joy, peace and comfort to those who listen. Making music together also builds community, and we are aware of the benefits of making music for our brain development and mental health. Whether you sing in the Chorale or a play in a band, whether you prefer pop or classical music, it is something to bring joy into your life and to others, it is finally a gift, God’s gift to us.
In the scriptures, especially the Psalms we find many invitations to make music to the Lord, and this music can express a wide variety of emotions, from overwhelming joy to great sadness, from victorious celebration to lament. While we do not know what the music of our forefathers in the faith sounded like – and perhaps that is of lesser importance as each culture appears to have its own way of making music – we do know the content of their songs, just check out the Psalms.
Music can reach deep within our selves – it has been called the language of the soul – and expresses and connects with things that we might struggle to put into words. Each generation is challenged to express their experiences and emotions this way ad interpret the music they inherited anew - and we certainly witnesses some of that last Saturday night.
We are extremely blessed with the amazing music program available in our College and I hope and pray that we all can grow and appreciate this special gift and give thanks to the creator who gifted us so.

Academic Matters
Science
In recent weeks, Year 7 have studied the water cycle as part of their science and SOSE studies. SEQ Water presented a workshop to the cohort. SEQ Water is predicting a drought in the next 12 months that will be longer than the last drought, hence the importance of the next generation understanding the issues of water security.
Do you have an old working smart phone sitting in your drawer not being used? Please consider donating it to the Science Department. Science has recently purchased a number of technology based teaching aides. We have class sets of virtual reality glasses and mini sphero and your old unwanted phones and chargers would maximise the use of the teaching tools. Unwanted phones may be handed to your Science teacher.
From the Academic Hub
Our Year 12 IB students have completed their Mock Exam last week. A huge thank-you to the amazing organisation and support of Mrs Midgley and Mrs Thompson to ensure a smooth running of the exams. We trust that the students use this experience to perfect their exam preparations for next term.
The QCS test is upon us. Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday, our QCAA Year 12 student will sit the final ever QCS test for Queensland. The Academic Hub, Teachers and Students are busily preparing for the days ahead ensuring the best possible success for the students. We look forward to the seeing the team of parents and teachers and fellow students next week.
Whilst it is a big week next week, it is business as usual for all year levels as we approach the end of term. A reminder the Year 11 and Year 12 Exam Schedules are up on Firefly.

The Upper Primary Students are enjoying their cushions and mats that have been kindly purchased through the Primary Years Parent Support Group. This purchase has allowed for the classrooms spaces to be extended outside – and we have been spoilt with perfect weather for this activity!
As a staff we have been prioritising our own well being and Monday afternoon was set aside for that exact reason. Some staff enjoyed getting out and exercising as a very valid way to look after ourselves. Many of our staff also completed the Bridge to Brisbane with family and friends. Research says that exercise offers more than physical wellbeing.
The link between exercise and mental health is strong. Happiness researcher Sonja Lyubromirsky (2007), notes that ‘exercise may well be the most effective instant happiness booster of all activities’. It is something we all innately know; however, many of us struggle to strike that balance. Physical activity has recently been identified as the most important factor in reaching optimal functioning (Mann & Narula, 2017). Getting outside and enjoying exercise with your children not only builds stronger bodies but also relationships.
We welcome back Mrs Carden from Long Service Leave next Monday 2 September. Mr Glass and I have enjoyed the challenge of overseeing the Primary years in her absence.

Every week at St Peters there are opportunities to witness amazing performances by our students. Students whose talents are nurtured and developed by lots of hard work and dedication by the students themselves, their teachers and their families. On Saturday afternoon and evening it was wonderful to see so many of our students perform at the Intermediate Ensembles Concert and at the Performer of the Year Recital Final. Well done to the St Peters Sinfonia, Junior High Songmakers, Saints & Singers, Lana. L (Yr 8), Cantique, Kaden K (Yr 9), Victor H (Yr 8). Congratulations on your achievements and thank you for sharing your gifts with us.
Father’s Day Breakfast
Yesterday, Junior High hosted their annual Father’s Day Breakfast, which was well-attended by the fathers of Junior High students. While enjoying some father/son or father/daughter time together over breakfast, our guests were entertained by Micah C (Yr 7), Joe I (Yr 8) and Connor C (Yr 8). Sincere thanks to all of those who attended; to our performers; to our Junior High Leaders who helped out on the day; Year 11 Hospitality students and staff and particularly to Mrs Arnold and Mrs Bolton for their organisation of this event.
BATYR Presentation
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the ‘BATYR’ session last Wednesday evening. BATYR was launched in 2011, after founder Sebastian Robertson experienced the frustration and isolation of living silently with mental ill health whilst at university. Sebastian recognised that it was time to have open honest conversations about mental health with young people, and founded the organisation, naming it after BATYR (‘hero’), The Talking Elephant from Kazakhstan. BATYR exists to ‘give a voice to the elephant in the room’ – the elephant being mental health. BATYR smashes the stigma surrounding mental ill health and empowers young people to reach out for support.
Over the last 18 months BATYR has presented sessions to over 85% of College staff enabling us to better support our students and families who are impacted by mental ill-health.

Senior School
Senior School
In recent weeks, a record number of Year 11 students have involved themselves in the Student Leadership application process. The courage shown by each applicant as well as their genuine desire to serve others in the community is to be commended. We were overwhelmed by both the quality and quantity of the nominations and we are very confident that as a collective, the Senior class of 2020 is going to leave a positive legacy on the College.
Successful applicants were presented on Senior School Assembly last Friday. Parents will have the opportunity to share in the celebration at a formal Leadership Installation Service which will be held early in Term 4. Students who have been selected to be Prefects should be justifiably proud given the calibre of the applications.
Many of the students who are unsuccessful in obtaining a Prefect position will have further opportunities to lead in an area of service that they are passionate about. Students have been reminded of this and encouraged to involve themselves in these opportunities. As previously communicated to students, there will also be a second intake of Prefects early in 2020, to recognise those students who continue to make a positive difference on School and Student Culture.
Each of the applicants should be proud of their efforts throughout the leadership application process, and more importantly of their contributions to the College during their time at St Peters. We are fortunate to work alongside such an impressive group of young adults.
It is with great pleasure that I am able to share with you the School Prefects for 2019/2020:
Julia B, Zachary B, Nikita B, Connor B, Bella B, Angus C, Matt C, Anneliese D, Charlie D, Ellie D, Michael D, Kerrith d, Daniel D, Josh E, Matthew F, Alexandra J, Angelina K, Tyla L, Lief L, Leon L, Jamie M, Eashan N, James P, Zoe P, Yadiv R, Catriona R, Ben R, Zac R, Niki R, Tim R, Alara S, Olivia S, Sophie T, Sam W and Lara W.
Next Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 September, our Year 12 QCAA students will be undertaking their important QCS tests. Staff and students have invested heavily in preparing for these important days, and we are confident that students are ready to give their best efforts.
We will provide all Year 12 students with breakfast on these days. If parents are available to help on these days to serve breakfast, we would love to have you along to encourage and support our students. Parent help to set up, serve and clean up after the breakfast would be greatly appreciated (from 7am-8am). If you are able to volunteer some time for serving the breakfast on either day, we need just a couple more helpers, please email Julie Burton (J.Burton@stpeters.qld.edu.au) so we can coordinate volunteers. Thank you for your support of the Year 12s.
A reminder that next Wednesday night we will be having our first evening Senior School Parent Support Group Meeting. Typically, these occur on a Thursday morning, however, we wanted to trial an evening meeting to make it more accessible to working parents. If you are interested in attending, we will be meeting in the P & F Centre from 6:30pm until approximately 7:45pm.
The Arts
Performer of the Year Concerto Competition
The St Peters Performer of the Year Concerto Competition – Saturday 31 August, 6.30pm in the PAC Auditorium.
The St Peters Performer of the Year competition has become an annual event of increasing cultural and educational significance since its inception in 2005. To enter the competition, talented young musicians from Years 7 – 12 submit audition recordings which are reviewed by an external adjudicator.
In 2019, four students were selected to play concertos in the Concerto Competition and another nine students were selected to perform in the Recital Competition. It was a major achievement by these students to be selected from a very large number of high level entries.
After an exciting display of virtuosic performance by all competitors, Grace S (Year 10 – Piano) won the Recital Competition last Saturday and will perform again at the Concerto Competition this Saturday.
The Concerto Final promises to be another amazing evening of music with four mammoth Concertos, backed by the full St Peters Symphony Orchestra, being performed the following finalists (alphabetical order) –
Tom H. (Violin) – Kabalevsky Violin Concerto Op. 48
Tara K.(Violin) – Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Op. 64
Yangyang L. – (Violin) – Barber Violin Concerto Op. 14
Lief L-A (Cello) – Walton Cello Concerto
Tickets for Performer of the Year Concerto Competition are $5 each and available now. The link for tickets is https://splcconcerto2019.eventbrite.com.au. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to a deserving charity nominated by the Concerto Winner.
Please join us for a wonderful night of music and support these talented young performers.

AIC Track & Field Training will combine with Primary Track & Field training until the Inter Lutheran Athletics Carnival. Parents of selected boys have been sent an email concerning the AIC Training and AIC Track & Field Time Trial meets.
Our boys faced Villanova College for Round 4 of the AIC seasons over the weekend. Yet again our Tennis players put on a dominant display across all Grades, resulting in wins from our 1sts, 2nds, 11A, 11B, 10A, 10B, 9A, 9B, 8A, 8B, 7A, 7B, 6A and 5A teams.
The current flu season has taken its toll on our sportsmen and our Tennis boys in particular has been badly affected. Many of our boys were asked to play up in older age groups over the weekend and also several boys played despite being sick during the week. It is this heart and strength of character that has led to our current culture in St Peters Tennis – a culture where boys have a sense of pride in playing for their College, their Coaches, their Team mates and, themselves.
Well done to our boys for another Tennis aggregate win. With three rounds of Tennis, left, we are looking good to continue our fine performances for the remainder of the 2019 season.
As an early notice, players and parents please be advised that the end-of-season Tennis break-up will be on the final Saturday of the season (14 September), at 1:00pm at the Lohe Street Tennis Courts. This means that our Seniors will have to travel back from Shorncliffe, however, it is a very important event where our players as well as coaches are recognised for their hard work and awards are handed to players. We look forward to celebrating another successful year of our St Peters Tennis players.
Please view this weekend’s fixture details via the St Peters App.
It has certainly been very pleasing to witness the levels of improvement amongst our AIC Basketball teams who are now four rounds into their season in 2019. One great example of this is our 10B team who I had the pleasure of watching last Saturday vs Villanova. These boys have previously had minimal experience with playing Basketball at a high level but due to their work ethic and commitment to the St Peters team ethos, they have improved tremendously over a relatively short time frame. The fact that they finished their game last weekend by walking off the court having just narrowly lost by five points to a much more experienced team is testament to this. The 10B team coach Hannah Beede is very proud of their efforts and they will continue the hard work on the training court each week as will all St Peters teams. Congratulations also to our 7D team who enjoyed a thoroughly deserving two point win.
Communication between coaches and players is vital towards preparation for each round and this week’s round vs St Edmunds is no different. It is essential that all available players attend every training session every week so that all St Peters teams are as prepared as possible to play to their full potential on Saturday. Please ensure that any availability concerns are communicated to either myself or Mr Grose with as much advance notice as possible.
A reminder that Basketball playing shorts (no pockets) are still available for purchase if necessary at Shop 45. Keep an eye on the St Peters App for the latest updates and playing draws each weekend.
Our first Track & Field meet for 2019 was held on Thursday of this week at the UQ Athletics track. This is the first of five meets in the lead up to the AIC Championships which is on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October at the UQ track once again.
This weekend sees our boys and girls participate in the Queensland Track & Field Nitro meet. St Peters has performed well in recent years at this event and 2019 looks to be no different. I look forward to reporting on this event in next week’s Boys Sport Rock article.
In the interim, our trainings have seen good numbers particularly in our middle distance and sprints and as club football winds up, we should see more of our boys commit 100% to these sessions. These sessions are absolutely imperative for the preparation of our AIC Track & Field season, and it is good to see so many boys making their training sessions.
AIC Track & Field Meets;
Meet 1 – Thursday 29 August @ UQ

Meet 3 – Friday 13 September @ SAF
Meet 4 – Friday 11 October (Term 4) @ UQ

Girls Sport
To all our St Peters families who support the sporting program here at the College, thank you. The middle of the year is always a busy time for families. We thank you for sending the same message to your daughters at home that we do at school, committing to a team is important and every session is a building block to the overall team success, therefore attendance is essential.
For girls’ sports, there are two sports that we are currently in the process of trialling or gearing up for trialling. All information is on the St Peters App and outlines the draw schedule for the week as well as information regarding trials and training procedures. Last weekend was our first scheduled trials for Waterpolo and we had a total of 123 girls at these trials. The other two sports currently in trials are Badminton and Junior Softball. Badminton has finished their trials and Junior Softball starts next week. Good luck to all the girls not only for the upcoming trials but also as we head into the final weeks of the winter fixture rounds for Netball, Hockey, Tennis and Volleyball.
National Cross-Country Championships
Congratulations to Gabby S (Year 8) who came third in the 13 years race at the National Cross-Country Championships on the weekend in Wollongong. This is another phenomenal effort by Gabby after recovering from illness. We also want to acknowledge Zoe M who was named the QLD Captain of the team. This is a great acknowledgement of the service and dedication she has shown to this sport over her years as a school participant. We also had participating in the 17 years Tyla L and Evie S and, in the 12 years, Ella K. Congratulations to these girls as well for participating in for some of them their first National Cross Country event for high school.

A number of invited rowers will be progressing to compete at the Queensland Schools Rowing Championships which are being held at the Wyaralong Dam rowing facility between the 21 – 23 August.
We congratulate the following girls on a successful season and we wish them all the best for Saturday’s Head of the River:
Winter Fixtures
With only three rounds to go, we hope all girls can really enjoy the back part of their seasons. We ask girls to keep up their motivation to attend all trainings and games. It is often as we lead in to assessment periods and exam blocks that this is most difficult so please use good time management and make sure you get regular exercise to assist with brain functioning. Attending training and games is a win win situation.
Hockey
Coordinator: Mr Cameron Glass
With three rounds to go Round 6 saw some strong performances for the junior and opens teams against St Hilda's. The juniors dominated the game with good field position and team work. Congratulations girls. This week we play IGGS at UQ fields.

Friendly games were enjoyed by the Senior C, 10C, 9C & 8C teams. Well done Girls 😊

Tennis
Coordinator: Mrs Deborah Wilson
Well done to our Open, Senior A, Senior B, and Junior A Tennis teams who all had wins against St Hilda's on the weekend.
Please ensure that if you can’t attend the matches, you email Mrs. Wilson well in advanced so that arrangements can be made. Some girls have been leaving this to the last minute which causes major issues for the draw.
Volleyball
Coordinator: Mr Joshua Singh
Just over half way through the season this weekend’s round we were up against St Hilda’s. A fantastic round where all teams playing against St Hilda’s won. Well done to the following teams that won this weekend. 7A, 8A, 9A, 10A, Snr A and Opens. Unfortunately, our Senior B1 and 10C lost and the 7B, 8B, 9B, 10B, Snr B3 all had Byes.
Congratulations to the following girls who made the team of the week: Emilia M (7A), Remaya B (8A), Luana A (9A), Hilal D (10A), Lizzie N (10C), Bella B (Snr A), Abbey N (Snr B1).
A special mention to Luana who managed to lift the whole team, who were clearly very tired from the long bus ride down to the coast early morning and also the Senior A team, who each week continue to play the game for all the right reasons, their spirit and encouragement of each other is always extremely positive and it's always a pleasure to watch these girls play.
Track & Field

Our fourth, out of seven, QG Lead Up Meets is this Friday 30 August at UQ track. The girls have been sent a link to sign up for this meet in the Girls Sport email as normal.
This weekend, many girls and boys will be competing in the QAA Nitro meet held at UQ track. This is an exciting event that allows schools from all over Brisbane to come together and participate in a variety of unique combinations of track relays and field events. Good luck to the teams competing this weekend.
Badminton
Coordinator: Mrs. Jenni Gagen
All training is now underway for the 2019 QGSSSA Badminton season. Please check the St Peters App for all details. It is important that girls have attended training and trials this week and if they are yet to do so they need to contact Mrs Gagen.
Junior Softball (Years 7 - 9)
Coordinator: Girls Sport Coordinators
Training and trials for Junior Softball starts next Tuesday 3 September and takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 6.15am - 7.30am on Harts Road Oval for the remainder of the term. The full training schedule is on the St Peters App.
For your information, the Softball games are played after lunch on the following days:
Tuesday 29 October
Thursday 31 October
Monday 4 November
Wednesday 6 November
Buses will be provided to and from Downey Park for these games and we usually return to school by 6pm.
If girls have a clash between Softball training this term and an in-season sport, we ask them to contact the Girls Sport Coordinators to notify them and we can help guide the girls in how to juggle both commitments. As a general rule, the in-season sport takes priority, as long as we know girls' interest to be involved in Softball.
Trials have started. It is very important that any girl wanting to be placed in a 2019/20 Water Polo team attends these trials, particularly if they have not yet been seen by the coaches. All details of trials are on the St Peters App.
Please email waterpolo@stpeters.qld.edu.au if you have any further questions now. When teams are confirmed further details regarding the upcoming season will be sent to the girls and their parents.
We hope you have a great week in sport

Symposium 2 – Teen Sleep and its Impact on Learning & Mental Health
Date: Tuesday 10 September – Dron Auditorium PAC
Time: 6:45pm
Cost: $5.00 – all proceeds from ticket sales will go to Headspace
Most of our children place little value on sleep and generally are poor sleep managers. Therefore, educationalists, parents, and health professionals all have an important role in detecting and resolving sleep deprivation.
Studies show people who are sleep deprived report increases in negative moods (anger, frustration, irritability, sadness) and decreases in positive moods. And sleeplessness is often a symptom of mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. ... So getting enough sleep and the right kind of sleep is important.
During this Symposium Dr Chris Seton – Paediatric & Adolescent Sleep Physician will show parents/supporters how important sleep is for learning and moods and then give practical strategies to optimise sleep. Dr Seton discusses solutions when detecting sleep problems and how to implement ways to build resilient, high quality sleep, with the ultimate aim of providing protection from stress-induced mood disorders, while achieving optimal school-learning outcomes.
Dr Seton is a Paediatric and Adolescent Sleep Physician who works as a Staff Specialist in the Sleep Investigation Unit and Respiratory Support Service at Westmead Children’s Hospital. He is the founding Director of the SAN Paediatric Sleep Laboratory and also consults in Paediatric Sleep Disorders at Hornsby and St Vincent’s Clinic, Darlinghurst.
Dr Seton’s special interests include Adolescent Sleep Deprivation, Paediatric Narcolepsy and the relationship between sleep and learning in children.
Gain a valuable insight into your teenager's sleep by coming along to this comprehensive Symposium.
